Hello,
Anyone else getting a totally black screen when you hit the dial button? I cannot even bring the screen back up to hang up- this is very frustrating. Thoughts?
thanks,
AC
Do you have a screen protector?
Yes.. Glass. Also, it works totally normal when up to a Bluetooth headset

I have the same issue on my nexus 6. You can't use screen protectors or thick ones like glass. Maybe its not using the proximity sensor with Bluetooth active.
If your screen protector don't have a cutout for the proximity sensor than that's your problem. The cutout should be on the lower right side of the top speaker. This was a known problem for all the screen protectors including mine. I got a replacement after contacting the manufacture.

Even on some plastic films. I just installed Mr Shields and get back screen. But in another thread, someone is using the same protector w/o problems.
This issue also affects many with Nexus 5 or 6, but only after upgrading to 6.0.
Is this a bug? Makes no sense that a thin film over sensor makes it not work. I've never had prox sensor cutouts before on other phones!
Okay, well that must be it. Where is the proximity sensor? Thank you guys.

No offense but do you even read other threads or the posts above? There's been a couple threads regarding the screen issue already, which comes up pretty easily with a Google search.
Then in post #5 of this thread, another member explicitly states where the sensor is. Seriously?

This pic shows where the proximity sensor is and if that is blocked by any screen protector it will cause black screen when making or receiving calls.
i had this problem you have to remove screen protector or just clean it .something covered the ear sensor
Mine is blocked and works fine. Just install Google Fit.

I removed my glass protector and it fixed it, bought one with the proximity already cut out, also explained it to the first person who I purchased my protector off and I got a refund. Bonus

I had this problem and I don't know why, but this help me.
Do you know why this solve the issue.
I am in android N.
Anybody having this issue WITHOUT a screen protector? I sent my phone in for a microphone repair, and when it came back I started getting this proximity sensor issue. No screen protector, just goes black as soon as I hit dial and there's no getting it back without restarting my phone. A real pain in the ass.
Yep I have that too, after replacing digitiser. No tempered screen on it yet. My guess is the "repairman" put glue to secure the screen down (because no correct tape available, that was my bad) and accidentally glued between the LCD proximity and backing. Just a guess. Going to check back on Monday.

So I bought the Nexus 7 the other day. I've briefly read about some of the issues affecting the Nexus 7. I don't have the time to go through every single posts in this forum so I'm hoping someone can summarize the issues for me. How can I check to make sure that my N7 doesn't have the screen lift issue? If it's flush with the case then everything is ok right?
Are there any other issues to worry about?
Also, I can't seem to tell whether I have the C60 or the C80 batch. The 6 and the 8 look so similar. Is there any other way to confirm this?

Check the sticker on the box
I wouldn't get too paranoid with potential problems, just look for screen lift, dead pixels and screen responsiveness.

Screen lift is the most common flaw. It occurs predominately on the left side.
The easiest way to inspect the left side is to look from the right. Hold the device with the right side facing you and look across the glass so the left bezel becomes a silver horizon. If the black display is higher than the bezel at any point, it will interrupt that silver line.
Here is an example of a flush screen, looking across the device from the right side.

I've attached some photos of units failing this test for comparison.
P.S. Also check the speakers for distortion/crackling at higher volumes. Test the headphone jack as well.

Darn, just got my Nexus 7 and mine suffers from screen lift. I assume Google will replace it if I contact them?
Google will replace it but your probably not going to have any more luck. I think most have this issue. In my experience, I popped off the back (it just pops off) and made 3 tiny "washers" out of the plastic from a medicine foil pack. Super easy to do and it is able to pull the screen down nicely. There is a great thread for this with step by steps. Use a plastic spoon or a guitar pick to help pop off a corner get started with taking the back cover off. Once you get a corner up, you can use your fingers to rip it off.
There is 1 screw that is problematic but the other left-middle screw also used a washer on mine (2 on the top and 1 on the lower). Where the screen lifts = screw.
Asus/Google fixes this by simply exluding the screw all-together. So essentially you could remove the screw(s) yourself for a 3-minute fix. I recommend the washer fix first because the screws were there for a reason.
They all have or will have screen lift at some point or another. Could we just give the OP other problems the N7 might have instead of making this thread into another one of the countless screen lift thread already in existences.
I'm still waiting for a screen to fall off the bezel.

Mine doesn't have this screen lift issue (so far), I don't see how this issue can appear over time if it's related to the screws.
Yer I got this I just saw it today. 3 Mins vs how many weeks to get it back with a bodge fix I think I'll go ahead and fix it myself.

Its not related to the screws. Its related to the adhesive that holds the screen down.

I can't see anything wrong with it, the edge of the frame is visible under all angles on all sides. If might not be "perfectly flat", but if it isn't, then the deviations are too small for me to pick up with my naked eyes (which are pretty crappy, I admit).

I got a Zagg one from a retailer in the mall and had them put it on. I also have Cruzerlite case, you have to wait a day for the wet application of the Zagg screen protector to dry fully otherwise the case starts to lift the film on the edges.

ive had my phone since middle of january. i have it uncovered, completely naked, no case whats so ever, and my screen is perfect, without any scratches. and im not that careful
Fork out some cash and get a decent screen protector. I do not have to deal with bubbles from screen protector for a long time. You can try Spigen or Skinomi. I use iloome tempered glass.
The texture of that plastic sheet that come with the phone isn't even very good for touch usage.
You can try watered down acetone to remove the paint maybe.

So................
Here is the story:
I dented the back of my HTC One and literally could not believe it. I had only had it for a week and im so careful with my phones.
So I tired a few ways to remove the dent without taking the phone apart. Like heating the dent up and then putting something cold on it. This helped a little bit however I could still see this dent starring at me. So I took drastic measures.
I tried to take the phone apart. This didn't work to well and I ended up scratching up the speaker grills in the process.
So now my beautiful new One has a dent in the back and scratches on the grills on the front. I felt like crying.
I decided to take the hard decision to try and cover these scratches up and decided to spray paint the grills matte black.
This is how it turned out:

Still have my dent, but I guess I'll have to live with it.

Thanks for posting the pics! I also did this last night - partially because I messed up one of the grille holes while trying to clear them out, and partially because I thought it looked interesting. I went with a matte paint too from Tamiya (model paint). I like the matte texture to prevent smudges and it's working great for that (especially the top one when I put it up to my ear!). Cut a couple of pieces of masking tape to cover the sensor window and camera lens so everything works fine. I only put a couple of coats on so that the grilles still look flat. Turned out pretty decent I think

I bought mine from Expansys. I had to change roms just to get LTE on the LTE model. so I voided my warranty by default. They offered to swap the handset, but I think they don't realise the g900m they sell doesn't ahve lte enabled, even after the OTA update. so I get to live with it. It's slowly shifting. eventually it will be away from the image sensor
I just really hope it's nothing to do with the water resistance. I'm already considering this may last samsung phone after 9 different galaxy s/note phones... luckily I don't typically bring it in water with my so it's not that big of a deal, but if it does happen and it leaks there.. samsung will be dead to me.
Mine was literally in the middle yesterday. So maybe by tomorrow it will be clear again. It's definitely related to heat. Either that or it wasn't glued in the first place.

ya, I've been debating about doing this tbh. I've changed glass before in other peoples' phones.. but I always had a new piece to replace the broken piece.. basically a spare.. I dont' have a spare if I mess up heh. ya I'll probably do this later. and maybe re-glue it lol...
I'm going to try this now heh.. will report back shortly. I took a look at a video online and it appears that the ring is accessible once the glass is removed...

so I just took that little o-ring out. wtf is it there for? lol, it was almost off the lens anyway. I only pried it open enough to get a needle in and take the ring out, I didn't take the whole thing off. I doubt it's as water resistant but who knows...
ADDITION: so it appears to narrow the field of view slightly. I don't take selfies, I may have a hangouts video call once a week (usually on my computer, but if I'm out I'd like to be able to do this..). I notice if my finger goes over the edge of the top of phone (but not over lens) it pics up my finger, where as it wouldn't have before.. big deal. I'd rather not have to take it apart again, so the ring is gone lol.
I hit it with the hair dryer once after pressing it down... going to do it again shortly, its' completely cooled. just hitting it again to be on the safe side. didn't cause any damage to phone so was rather easy just make sure to be patient. I had pry tools from old phones, but I wouldn't recommend taking the entire glass off with it...
Thanks for getting back to us and telling us how you got on.
