How to stop marshmallow update? - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Marshmallow was automatically installed a couple of weeks ago and has no discernible improvements whatsoever and a whole host of problems (not least that the casting function is now either flakey or non existent and appears and disappears randomly) Because of the casting and dlna problems I want to do a factory reset and revert to lollipop. How can I stop the np automatically 'upgrading" to marshmallow? I know I have the option to turn off app auto updates on Google play but I can't see how to stop it installing marshmallow. Thanks very much.

Ok thanks. But I said I knew how to stop app auto updates. I'm interested in seeing if I can stop auto system updates. It's easy on a phone or tablet. I can't see how it's done on the np. Thanks.

Sideload the "My Android Tools" app which is available at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.myandroidtools&hl=en. After it's installed on your Nexus Player, open and configure it as shown here by using a mouse but you will need root access for this to work.

Yes I know, you can stop system updates aswell,. ^ basically does what gabby said

Ok. Will do. Thanks very much to both. It's a pity I can't do it without rooting it though (which I don't want do) So it looks like I have no choice but to have marshmallow installed which is crazy really.

Yes, marshmellow is very buggy for me. I have constant error messages where it says this has stopped working, and external storage issues. Are you having the same issues?

My issues are all casting related. Casting is non existent on Ethernet and buggy as hell on wireless. Dnla is also awful and frequently won't work under marshmallow. On my phone I deliberately don't update to a new os until all the problems are sorted. With the nexus player I'm given no choice.

Pre-installed Facebook App on Note 4

After disabling the built in Facebook application using the Application Manager, I noticed it somehow automatically updated itself and no longer appeared in the Disabled apps list. It's crazy enough I have deal with unwanted pre-loaded applications I won't use but having something on my device that's re-enabling a specific application I disabled and automatically updating it is unacceptable to me. I'd like for someone who also owns this device to try the same thing and letting me know your observation.
Yeah, it's re-enabled itself twice on me already. At this point, since I've not yet rooted my phone, I unfortunately am letting it remain installed & updating, even though I have no facebook account (anymore)
You have to disable the face book messenger too or it still has its hooks in your phone. I disabled it on day 1 and no problems at all for me

Ok so it happened to me when I connected to WiFi so I turned off the automatic updates in play store settings and it shouldn't happen again.

I also had that disabled within the Play Store but a new Software Update was just released that states it improves performance and has some bug fixes so I'll try disabling it again after applying this update.
Even if you disable an app, it will ask you to update it. If you update it, it will activate again. Make sure to disable auto-updating and when updating apps, just dont update that one.

I wasn't going to root to test out how KNOX due to using my phone for work but FB pissed me off with always updating even though i disabled it and i finally said "F That" and rooted.
All preinstalled apps can do this.
It's because the play-store app has to be restarted once to get the application off from the updates list.
The pending update will raise the application even if it was disabled.
I had this happen with play magazines and movies. They kept coming back and there always was an update for them as i kept reverting them to
original state while disabling them.
So kill play store from the task manager after disabling an app. This has nothing to do with facebook.

Facebook auto,updates
This same thing happens to me. I have an AT&T version of Galaxy Note Edge. No root exists for this miserable $1,000 piece of crap phone.
My play settings are set to NOT auto update.
Facebook comes as a system app on this phone.
Can't root it, so can't get rid of it. Constantly auto updates, disabling the Facebook chat enabler, which doesn't require the separate messenger app. The chat enabler doesn't work with newer versions, so every day I have to go to the app manager and Uninstall updates to FB. Doesn't prompt for updates, just does it. Can't revert back to Kit-Kat on the phone because it bricks the phone.

Force stop, clear data and uninstall the update, reboot the NP and let it update Google Cast again. Also, if you have more than one NP give the players a unique name in the About section within Settings.
I did all of this and I'm still unable to cast to my Nexus Player. Doesn't make any sense...

It's so weird. It works fine on mine. They're both updated with the latest Android updates. I also have the Chromecast app installed on my phone, I don't know if it even makes a difference but I am just trying to think of things that I have done.
You have the casting app updated? From Reddit: The problem didn't have to do with either Marshmallow or the most recent APK update (though the timing was understandably suspicious), but we're pushing an updated APK that resolves the actual issue.
You should see version 1.16.45911 (Settings > Google Cast) once you've updated.
You could try to downgrade the app if it still doesn't work: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google...ast-receiver-1-12-28389-android-apk-download/

That's the Chromecast receiver version I have. I read on reddit and here and some people has the same issues but no fixes apparently. I'm not saying its MM, just that it's not working.
I might do a factory reset this weekend (thus losing root) to see if it gets fixed. Either that or just live without Casting...

No way this is gonna work. Seriously it has syncing problems with some google apps such as Chrome, Play Games and this is really a shame for ZTE for such a messed up updated the so called MiFavor 5. They'd better release another update soon and fix this.

Why do you think it is a problem of the update though?? I had trouble with GApps on B01 and B06, and I could fix them on both. They stop working all of a sudden, sometimes after a reboot one will get frozen... it's because it's a Chinese ROM.
Try reinstalling it from zero and see if the problem is still there. The way to solve it is that one.

Updating LG built-in apps

Hello XDA enthusiasts!
Has any of you encountered a problem with updating built-in apps (Settings > About Phone > Update center > App Updates)?
Whenever I click on 'Update' button next to the application (i.e. LG Mobile Switch, Cloud etc.) I immediately receive 'Paused' status right underneath the app name. The progress bar moves quickly from left to right, but the update is not being downloaded.
I have tried updating apps via Wifi and Mobile Network, but none of them work...
The phone is running the latest official build for LG-H870 European version, which is: V10t-EUR-XX.
Any help would be appreciated!
Do you have any ad-blockers or VPN's running? I am using Blokada and saw the same thing (download immediately pauses). If I turn Blokada off before I attempt to update the apps, it works just fine.

DAMN!... I can't believe it was so simple. THANK YOU for pointing that out. Indeed I'm using Blokada on my phone, but it sits there and works in the background, so I just forgot about it. I mean I forgot that it can block the access to LG servers.
That being said, turning off Blokada solved the problem.
Old topic, but I have to say a big Thank You! It solved my problem on my LG G4. Never thought of this as an issue. Thanks!

Disable Battery Optimization

So it looks like there are many people having issues with the battery optimization feature, which lets me guess oneplus is already aware of the problem. My question is if there is a way to disable the optimization completely for now until oneplus has sorted things out.
Since the last update it is so aggressive, it kills youtube's connection to my chromecast every few minutes, rendering all control features unuseable as I always have to reconnect before I can do anything. This also makes my wearOS watch unuseable as it also depends on the phone keeping the connections alive.
You can turn off Optimization for YouTube and WearOS
Settings > Apps & Notifications > Special app access
You can turn off optimization for any app, and see the advanced in the 3 dot menu. I had the same problem with my watch, turned off the watch app and helper, now works great. I also turned off messenger, no problems now.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I also would like to know if this is possible in an easy way. I don't want to disable it for 256 apps independently.

Thanks for the reply!
That setting was the first thing I checked and already disabled optimization for the wearOS and cast apps which work fine now. Unfortunately it won't let me disable it for the youtube app as it handles that one as a system app. As long as youtube is not allowed in the background wearOS has nothing to communicate with so I still can't control it.
That's why my next thought was if I can't disable it for system apps maybe there is a way to completely disable it until oneplus has the problem solved. I know that solution would suck but at the moment I am forced to use another phone to use youtube properly which sucks even more imo.

I wonder if the system mover app works on Pie and YouTube? I didn't realize YouTube was a system app since it's from the play store.

I would love to try this but I am unrooted. Youtube should be on the list but it is not, I am guessing that is because it comes preinstalled, the playstore app isn't there as well for example.
I know this is an old thread, but the more I use my new phone, the more I believe this to be the issue with my Gmail app constantly putting my Exchange accounts back to 30 minute fetch. And, I cannot disable battery optimization on Gmail because it's a system app (and I do not want to root). For now, every other day, I have to tell the device that it really is OK for Gmail to remain constantly connected to my Exchange account, that I actually prefer it to be. I've made it to 54 hours with my normal use (OVER 7 HRS S.O.T), not trying to stretch it at all, no battery saving features on whatsoever. So it's safe to say I can afford for Gmail to stay connected with Exchange. The optimization is a bit too aggressive for not allowing system apps to be excluded.
I've also had issues with Google Assistant not reminding me about reminders that are clearly in the list of her reminders, and I think this to be the culprit as well, and again, can't disable it because it's not on the list.

Having exactly same problems with gmail and chrome (html5 push notifications). I am rooted. So I am considering to mark those apps as non system apps, but still not sure if this won't brake future updates or something.
