[OFFICIAL] Android 6.0 Marshmallow Update Details - Shield Tablet General

So, on Nvidias twitter about an hour ago, they replied that Android 6.0 Marshmallow was "possiby" coming to the Nvidia Shield Tablet.
I wouldn't say we should get our hopes up, but again this is a "possibly" straight from Nvidia's official Twitter page, so who knows!

Nvidia Shield Tablet info (Found in replies to above tweet)
Original Tweet: https://twitter.com/nvidiashield/status/649031937076629504
So yeah, @NvidiaShield directly replied that we could "possibly " (note the smiley face haha) get 6.0. But who knows, after the recall and all I wouldn't be surprised if Nvidia stopped caring about our Tablet.

I think it's a platform they're looking to grow, and the only thing stopping them from furthering the advancement would be a shield tablet 2. But if they know anything about gamers, we like a company that cares about our old hardware so it would be in their best interest to keep our hardware up to date. The same way that HTC is releasing Marshmallow for the m8. They don't have to do that and it would be understandable if they didn't.

Agreed, the portable was updated recently as well. I think as you said this is a long term play for Nvidia and as much as the battery issue was a really pain they will continue to support the tablet.
I am not sure if we will ever see it officially go back on sale, or if a version 2 will be released first...but either way we will see 6.0 sooner than later.

?

Hey guys, chances are getting higher for 6.0! NVIDIA just anounced a New tablet called Shield K1. Its nearly the same as ours now with same Hardware. This means, new device=New version of Android (i hope)

Androidpolice are stating " It's currently running Android 5.1.1, but NVIDIA already plans to push Marshmallow to it (along with existing SHIELD Tablet units) by the end of the year. " regarding the new version of the shield..
Nice christmas present if they hit that deadline
And for once, a UK price that isn't a straight pound for dollar swap. £149 v $199

Have any details appeared since? It seems to all be attributed down to a single tweet.

Marshmallow was guaranteed for the Shield Tablet 2. I believe before Christmas. The Shield Tablet 2 has identical hardware to our tablet aside from the stylus which means the software is more or less interchangeable so expect the upgrade to come roughly the same time for both tablets.

If it has identical hardware, does that mean [email protected] will be possible on our older shield tablets?
as that was something they said they would add to the newer tablet...

Weeks later and still no information from nvidia.

I tweeted at their official Nvidia Shield twitter account to ask for details on the Marshmallow update for the K1. They only said, "We're working on something! "
At least they're working on it. I just wish we had more details.

Damn, it's sounding like it's really not a priority.

It really isn't... More than likely they have another tablet coming out.

According to a tweet released by SamFirmware a few days ago, it seems that Samsung Galaxy Tab will receive the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) update at the end of Q1 (1st quarter) 2011. We are not sure if this is true or not but according to them this news is “based on FW and insider news”.
We all know that Android 2.3 is already getting tested on different devices such as the new PlayStation Phone and Google accidentally released a video showing how the new android OS works. And if we take into account the fact that carriers still have to update their mobile devices to Android 2.2, it makes sense to wait a bit until everyone is on the same OS.
I am sure that Android 2.3 will arrive soon also based also on the fact that Google’s CEO and Chairman of the Board, Eric Schmidt, confirmed at the Web 2.0 Summit that Gingerbread will be launched “in the next few weeks”.
We attached bellow a few videos from Google and from the leaked PSPhone which gives you an insight on how the new update performs/looks like. Do you think there will a lot of improvements compared to 2.2? Will this update be fully optimised to work on the Samsung Galaxy Tab? We will have to wait and see
thank you for the information this is good news
Hope the browser on the tab will default to desktop mode

The reason ot doesnt is because so many websites are Android friendly/have Android only features. You can get other browsers that perform as well/better that have desktop mode.

Given that 2.3 still isn't out for any platform yet in a final state, and the usual length of time it takes for OEMs to release a customised firmware for any platform (how many phones have 2.2 that were "promised" it?), I'll be amazed if it turns up by the end of March.
Here's hoping though.
2.3 is a lot more modular than older revisions were. In theory it should take less time and effort to roll out than 2.2 did.

An option so it at least remembers that youve set it to desktop version would be appreciated, then those that want to keep the mobile versions are unaffected whilst those who want a full web experience dont have to change their useragent everytime they load their browser.

Well, the Gingerbread-equipped Google Nexus S phone is basically a slightly improved Samsung S, so hopefully APKs and other hacked ROM bits will soon start becoming available for the Tab too
Firmware dumps are already available (on this very forum), but of course they are not usable as-is. Still, it won't take long to see some results. The Gingerbread source code will be available later this month via AOSP, in the meantime the SDK can be studied via the emulator.

i would also be interested to know whether the galaxy tab will receive the honeycomb update to.that updatewill support tablet devices, but samsung are awful at updating their devices, they want pepe to upgrade to new hardware,I suspect that they are going to release galaxy tab 2!
good stuff, cant wait!
The biggest question is: will the VOIP module be crippled?
I wouldnt keep my hopes up until end of june that is. I really doubt we will get 2.3 before summer, seeing all those years how slow updates are by all companies. Just my 2 cents.
Sadly, most this info is no good to US stuff. It's all when the carrier releases it.

Yea, that may be the case so we dont know the for sure date, but with this news we know we should be getting it anyway.
I hope that will fix the problem with Exchange email not being able to display HTML emails. I spent several hours on the phone with Samsung this week and they determined they couldn't fix the problem but they "hoped" an upgrade to 2.3 would.
This issue has something to do with SSL security. HTML emails do come in for things like Gmail and Hotmail but with some exchanges, the emails come in as plain text.
Paul.
So there's now a half working port for the SGS.
Wonder if the tab will get the same love? I'm considering switching to an iPad + SGS to get the best of both worlds, simply because i'm underwhelmed by the dev support of the Tab.

[Mid-February] ISC update - variable dates from Asus

As i have been looking over the web, searching Asus's FB pages, there were some answers when TF101 will get ICS update.
But the problem is because different Asus people answer us differently.
NOTE! All quotes are from their FB pages, you can check them out.
Nr.1: From: "ASUS North America": soon. Its in the process of being approved by google. once that is done we will be able to push it out to you guys.
Nr.2: From: "ASUS": Possibly Feb. No confirmed dates at this point. -Mark, ASUS
Nr.3: From: "ASUS Serbia" Lepa vest za korisnike Transformer TF101. Ice Cream Sandwich za isti se očekuje polovinom februara. (meaning: we get it in mid Feb.)
So, what do you guys think? We get that ICS in mid feb, sooner or later?
I kinda bet its gonna be later than that
Signed.
id say somewhere between next week and mid February.
How about when we get it, we get it. There are so many threads dedicated to this topic already.
I don't think it will be mid February that's for a Serbia. I think Asia asus might be closer to truth.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I would have to say that this is just one too many threads about this update. Geez!
close this topic, asus has already announced the ICS update will be sometime during the last week of January (which also includes the first week of February). We can only wait and see if they are accurate.
Anyone think we will get strawberry shortcake before Dec 2012?

The Mayan didn't say anything about SSC. So i would say no.
Asus NA is right for NA consumers. Mid-February seems correct if you're living in Serbia. It has nothing to do with NA consumers since the launch appears to be staggered based on location.
So for NA consumers it's "soon". End of story.
I think it will come when Federer wins the Australian Open. Or when Nadal breaks another knee or something.

Although I can't find it right now, I remember reading one of Asus's facebook comments that said the US and Taiwan will get the update at the same time.
Asus Italia said at the END of february.... Anyway i think it will released at the end of this one.... i HOPE
Only when asus hears no more complaints from disgruntled transformer prime customers unable to update to ics due to "unknown serial number" debacle.
I suggest all those who are complaining daily about the delay of ICS jump over to the prime forum and see how much fun they are having with the ICS update. Yes I would like the ICS update, but not at the expense of the problems the prime folks are having. Maybe it is best we don't have it just yet.
Can't wait!
I voted never.

the same applies to samsung with galaxy s and ics.

That's a lot of hate, but i agree, if I were to own this company i'd do everything for charity, making a profit is overrated!
I don't know how focused they can be on updating the old-gen Transformer, but I guess they will update, since both are catering to different market segments, and you might want to get the cheaper TF101 if it's good enough for you even with the TF201 out.
That said, I'm sure they'll be using the Prime as an ICS Guinea pig. I voted for mid-February, and I guess we'll get several minor updates after it's out (whenever it's out) for bug fixing (as it's been the case so far).
Damnit Asus... Yesterday they said "Awaiting Google approval", and now they're saying Mid-February...

ICS late March/April + more info, no Play successor YET.

So i was bored. Decided to start chatting to someone at Sony on the live chat, fishing details out of her were a bit slow but this is what i got, just going to post the useful information.
Arron: is there any estimate for the Xperia 2011 phones getting Ice Cream Sandwhich?
Hayley:The release date is late March/ April. Any information at the moment would be posted on our blogs here: http://blogs.sonymobile.com/
Arron: Being an Xplay user i was wondering if there is any word of a successor?
Hayley:There is no development or plans for a new phone of this type.
Arron: A lot of people are wondering when the UK/EU and other parts of the world are going to start receiving some form of the Playstation store offering Playstation/Sony games other than PSX classics i.e. Japan getting Loco Roco etc.
Hayley: There are many new exciting ideas we have ready to push out shortly after the release of the upcoming firmware, I cannot say what.

Didn't I read somewhere that most of the 2011 series phones would be getting ICS at the end of March / start of April but that the Play wouldn't be one of them as it's got different hardware and requires more work? In fact, I recall May / June being quoted at one stage.
I'm not sure how much truth there is in what I just said and I can't find the original thread that I am thinking of so sorry if I have gotten this completely wrong
EDIT:
Didn't see the other thread on this topic. I guess it's just a wait and see.

Android 5.0 and L as OS options for G3 on LG SmartWorld: a hint on an early update?

I have posted this in reddit and wanted to share it here too. While I was browsing the LG SmartWorld site, I clicked the phone selection link on the right to choose the G3. After choosing the G3 and hitting OK, a dialog appears asking the operation system of the phone and there are options for Android 5.0 and Android L. I also checked this with other phones and these only appear in G3 models. Maybe a hint towards an early Lollipop update?

Now that's interesting. Hopefully it IS a sign we'll be getting it soon.
Interesting link i found
Came across this in a google search in regards to android l looks like early files for the new OS maybe just for the boot process so far.

Why when i go to smartworld web it says my device not supported?? I have d855 32gb
D855 shows Android 4.4 and ANL, I think that one big update is coming

Do not expect many things.we are talking about LG the worst company in the updates. I wish to be wrong but something tell me that we will only see android L with the next release of lg g4. Lg usually brings the updates 3 months after Samsung and htc . Htc which promised fast update to m8 it states a few days ago that it will give the android L 90 days after received the stable version from Google. That means that the fast plan from htc is about 4 months from now. Guess now LG which slowest than a turtle.we are talking about 7 to 8 months. Which will be very near to the release of next g4. So it will wait a few months more to release the new g4 with the new lolipop experience. I wish to be wrong but lg has a very bad history.
LG G4 will be released with 4.4.....LG in a nutshell

Lol that has to be a joke from them. They can't even get the carriers to release anything. So yeah 6 month isn't so unrealistic. Even for canadien android releases

I have no faith in LG but if they update this phone to 5.0 it will sell more of these for them. So we might get lucky cause they are greedy.
I believe that it will take longer than 6 months to get out to carriers (At&t still is on 10d.) But it could be possible for the international versions.

If all of these guys have not been working with the preview build code and getting all their ducks in a row, i would be SHOCKED. This is a new way for google to announce the OS and i think they did it to give OEMS time to get stuff ready for fast updates. Once final code drops, i wouldnt be surprised to see OEMS releasing for certifications from carriers within a month. At least HTC and samsung! lol But here is the thing i keep hoping for. Samsung used to be HORRIBLE with updates, then they figured it out and now are one of the fastest (HTC still has the crown). LG Could do the same. Especially with all the time they should have already had with the base code (not any MAJOR changes really even in this latest preview). Fingers crossed. As long as i have this phone long enough to actually see the update. My tmobile jump and a nexus 6 or note 4 are almost tempting me, but i love this phone!

This only determines OS updates. We'll get monthly OTAs for another year. Looking back at N5 and N4, I'm sure we'll get 7.0.1, 7.1 and so on...

Exactly, we'll get Android N and all the updates it brings. We will not get Android O for sure, at least not officially When you have a nexus and know what a rom is, that's not a big problem.

A. No guaranteed support
B. No support
Guys pls don't bash me but iPhone 4s launched 4 years back was updated to iOS 9 and will probably get iOS 10 as well...At least for nexus devices Google needs to have a longer update horizon , maybe at least 2 years from the date the device was last sold ...no I did not say iPhone is better , calm down

I think they should be updating longer as well, but it's not like they haven't been upfront about it for a long time now. It's less of an issue to me, as I always run community ROMs and there are going to be devs supporting AOSP builds for a long time to come.

Just because it's not guaranteed doesn't mean OS updates will stop. Look at the N5 and N7 2013.
Guys, this is a nexus. I don't even run stock the moment I received my nexuses. So I don't mind about firmware support.
On the other hand, Google had the best customer support I've ever encountered. I had problems with a few unit of my nexus and got replacement several times without a problem.

Simple would be: a Nexus device can expect to receive updates for 2 years and security updates for 3 years.
A list with dates is unrealistic because they use the words ' no guaranteed '

Could be worse I suppose. Could spend $800+ on a new phone and have a locked bootloader from the mfg like the Galaxy S7. LOL :highfive:

You could always migrate to Shamsung or htc, where the official support period is about six months shorter......because it takes six months for the update to arrive.
Well, you get at least 3 years of support.
@vivebatu, have you seen iphone 4 on ios9?

I purchased this device knowing that as soon as I got it powered up I was going to unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and then root. I even had Multirom planned and a few custom Roms picked out.
That's why I got it. Not for the camera or SOT, but for development and testing and to just have fun with it. Even if they stop supporting it in October there will still be custom Roms for it and several good stock builds too.
I plan on getting what ever Google builds to replace this device but am planning on keeping this around and ready to go. With 3gigs of ram, and the processor it has, this device will be around for some time yet and still be a formidable device.
Just my humble opinion.
