Reception and Call Quality - Droid Turbo 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How is everyone feeling about the reception and call quality of the DT2 as compared to previous phones? 4G reception appears to be lacking in fringe areas as compared to my wife's Note 4.

Honestly I went from the S4 to Turbo2 and signal doesn't compare. The S4 didn't get any signal in my house and the Turbo 2 will work anywhere in my house. I have put mine side by side with a note 5 and my signal is stronger. In my opinion, the Motorola radio is better than Samsung

I've thought 4g to be better than my droid maxx

I'm coming from the Maxx and I thought it was slightly better with 4G. Thanks for your input.

Honestly... im coming from a HTC One M7... signal reception is great and call quality is amazing... Never had the advanced calling before either. Happy so far.

Be careful with he advanced calling according to a Verizon Rep, he told me with he advanced calling if you are in a lte area and go into an area without lte the call will drop

Works better in my house than my LG G3 did. Huge difference

Will the Incredible be subject to the same N1 3g issues?

Pretty much as topic, not sure if anyone has any first hand experience of it.
higly doubt that since i heard 3g issues were because of tmobile. So far i havent heard of bad reception from the early incredible reviewers but we wont know till its out.
i doubt it... seeing as how the chipset is different(cdma chipset not gsm) and the carrier is different... your results may very tho...

Sorry I wasnt very specifc, I was thinking in the UK, O2 to be specific. N1 and BBerry Bold 9000 sitting next to each other, N1 on not even half 2G, BBerry on max 3g.
Well considering it won't be released in the UK you'll never know? Why even ask?

I was hoping we would eventually get a UK version, but obviously we've just been shafted with the desire.... WE HAD THE N1 ALREADY WHY GIVE US THE SAME PHONE
Really doubt it. T-Mobile 3G bands require a second Antenna. The Antenna was located at the bottom of the nexus which was a design flaw and thus why 3G was terrible. Not to mention T-Mobile has terrible 3G coverage.
I just made the move from T-mo Nexus one to the Incredible through Verizon.
I had two replacement devices sent to me because of the 3g issues and all the other problems this device was plagued with from day one.
The incredible so far has been perfect. No 3G issues at all.
I am sure that T-mo's 3g coverage was partly to blame but that wasn't the only cause of this problem. With a T-mo G1 and a T-mo Nexus one sitting side by side often the N1 would bounce back and forth between 3g and Edge if it was able to get the 3g at all. This was with all 3 N1's I used. all the while my G1 had a perfect 3g connection.
Not the Incredible. Great phone. Incredibly snappy. Fast 3g through Verizon. No complaints as of yet.
Fingers Crossed...
my friends incredible southern california area has been getting really low 3g signals. im always at full HSDPA bars and he gets 1 or two bars if hes lucky.....
ive also read that a lot of phones has been rebooting randomly on its own, and some speculate on that low signal. you think his phone is defective?
one of the area's the rebooting was happening in (reportedly) was one of the Carolinas (quite a few customers), and Verizon speculated that it had to do with the local towers causing the problem,
Also the signal bar indicator looks to be a software problem, do a comparison of signal strength and you will see what I'm talking about. I looked at 3 different phones that had full bars, mine had only one bar..but when you look at the signal strength it was almost identical.
my major gripe is battery life, but I just ordered the Seidio replacement

Lots of HTC phones have the antenna at the bottom of the phone The Touch HD and the Incredible to name a few. \
I have had no 3G issues, The antenna indicator always reads a bar less then my droid did in the same spot but the phones perform the same and I have read that this is most likely a false reading

Check the dB's, not the "bars". Bars read a little lower, but signal strength is better on DI compared to a lot of other phones.
Overall, I thought moto droid's quality and reception were good, the DI appears to be a few steps above that!
So far, DI's been flawless!!
You canals force 3g by dialing #*#*4636*#*# and select evdo from phone information menu. That's what I use when I really need to browse.

duh why didnt i think of that??? LOL
my 3G reception has been terrible on two Incredibles. varies from -100 to -105 dBm. and its not a service area issue. my room mate has a droid and gets excellent 3G speed and call quality in the same room. My data speeds are slower than at&t 2G and voice is to the point of unusable. some of these phones that go out are certainly bad
Verizon CS has been very helpful in this process, but i still dont have a phone thats usable

I checked my signal strength compared to my fiance's droid, my incredible got the same and sometimes better. the bars on the incredible lagged some and would show one less. For the most part they fluctuated about the same.

Verizon G2 signal

I've had my Verizon LG G2 for four days. It seems that the phone data signal mostly stays at 1-2 bars. It's mainly on 4G, but there are times that it drops to 3G, even 1X. I have run side by side tests with an S4 where its signal icon is at least a bar higher and is always on 4G.
Does the G2 have a weaker antenna than the S4? Or could I have a faulty phone?
Here's another thing, MMS messages seems to take between 30-45 seconds to send. I am a new Verizon subscriber, but when I was on Sprint my phones rarely took this long to send an MMS. Is the length of time my phone takes to send an MMS normal for Verizon?
Lastly, my phone heats up to the point of getting hot whenever I'm on a call for more than 5 minutes or whenever I send multiple MMS messages. If I took the phone back to the Verizon corp store where it was purchases, would it qualify for a new replacement?
Thanks in advance.
I don't see any of that on mine and the signal is much better than my old GNEX.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 4
My G2 gets 2-3 bars indoors where I work, where my GNex would struggle just to keep one bar. If I go outside, it gets a full 4-5 bars and good speed too (I hit 43.8 mbps just this afternoon on Speed Test). Granted, the GNex's radio hardware sucked, but I don't find the G2's to be a disappointment at all.
For a better comparison than number of bars, you can go to Settings -> About Phone -> Network -> Network Type and Strength. It breaks it down by 4G (data) and 1X (voice) signals. Numbers closer to zero are better, so for instance -50 dBm is a much better signal than -100 dBm. Not sure where this is on the S4, but it should be in a similar place.
Well I got mine on Wednesday, came from the RAZR maxx HD. I an day mine is much better than the maxx hg. The interior of my building at work I couldn't get a signal with my HD, it would drop to 1x and sometimes no signal. This phone keeps 4g in the same spot. My office with the HD was OK, slow internet but kept 4g. This phone works perfect there too.
I think you have a faulty one.
Be careful comparing different UI's. When I was swapping back and forth between sense and aosp sense showed 5 bars and aosp showed 2 >_>. Artificial Inflation!!!
I actually haven't even made a call or sent an MMS on my G2, so I can't comment on those
Verizon signal on mine seems better than my gs4. I've dropped to 3g only once in the weeks I've had this and that's because there was a huge verizon outage in NJ

same network?
also the artificial inflation above. If the 5 bars were more accurate then the 2 bars were off. And thats not just ui, its modem ,rom, phone, tied into circumstances and networks lol. On previous phones I noticed that itsnot as straight forward.
For me reception/in call quality/network speeds on g2 has gotten better then on all previous phones.
On Verizon curently have razr hd and note2. Thinking of G2. So you guys that have had them for awhile how is data reception? My Razr is top notch there but a little slow on everything else. My note2 is fast as lightining but lacks a bit compared to Razr in data reception. Im in a poor coverage area for about 7 months out of the year and need good 3G 4G reception. So how about it how good is the G2? Thanks

Just came from a razr, the difference is night and day. In addition, the razr doesn't give accurate measurements of signal. The G2 has been more accurate, has a better signal, and is faster.

That's really good to here my HD is really good for signal its just hasn't got the power or I should say processor to do the job. I'm unlocked rooted and over clocked to 1890. It works but its really struggling. If the G2 will give me good signal strength its twice the phone my HD is out the box. Thanks.

I thought the signal on my razr was good also, until I got the G2. I have been going to a doctor's office for the last 4 months. My razr would always have 1 bar of 4G, but the speeds were more like evdo. I would always have to jump on the free wifi. My G2 on the other hand has 4G when it says 4G. I don't use the wifi anymore because it's actually slower than 4G.
As for the power, it has easily run everything I've thrown at it. Even programs that slowed my razr almost to a stop. Night and day.
My only real problem with the G2 was the phone call quality. I think it is something that is really skimmed over in most reviews, when it should be a priority. I mean, after all, it is a phone. On the razr, phone calls were clean and clear like I was in the same room or at worst, 1 over. On the G2, calls are more bassy and it sounds like there is some distance between me and the caller, if that makes any sense. I actually feel like I'm on a phone. I do have to ask people to repeat themselves more often, but not so much that it's a hassle. Most of the time call quality is actually pretty good, but after using Motorolas since the OG droid, it just doesn't feel right at times. One good thing, is I occasionally hold the phone between my head and shoulder with very little problems. On the razr, I just couldn't do that comfortably because the callers on the other side wouldn't be able to hear me. Hasn't happened yet with the G2.

Should be able to pick one up for about $475. Thanks Again.

My wife has the razr maxx, I'm coming from the maxx hd. On fringe areas, it's almost the same. This last week, where I was, I could kinda make phone calls, texts are in and out with the G2. I was in the same place a few weeks ago with the maxx hd and it was the exact same. About 2 weeks ago I was in the same place as my wife and hers kept the signal a little longer on the maxx than my G2. And the dbs were a little lower on hers, maybe 5db, indicating a little better service. The G2 does a little better than the maxx hd inside a building tho, it keeps 4g where my maxx didn't at one place at work.
Overall I would say it's a wash I'm my experience. But I use a Bluetooth and the Bluetooth connection is a little better.

I have had the same issue as you all did. I have an old sims card that was in my old droid 4 phone. My coverage kept losing 4g and no matter what I did no 4g in sight. I have a sims card that came with the lg g2 and after a long time of suffering with this problem I called tech support. He tracked down the problem to the sims card I had in the phone. Long story short the problem lies in the old sims card. The old card was primary a 3g card so the device would try to go to 4g and it did on a temp basis but after a 2 to 3 minute period it would never go back to 4g without the reboot. I had tech support check it out and after we activated the proper sims card...poof... all better! The problem lies in the sims card. Call tech support and it will fix your problem. Hope this helps everyone by offering a solution and exposing the problem so everyone understands the issue..

Samsung hasn't been known for exceptional signal strength. Can't speak for Apple, but Motorola pretty much steals the show in that category. I saw the difference for myself when I had my old Galaxy s3 next to my work phone, which was a Droid Razr Maxx.

Just basing this off of my own experience, the recent gen of Samsung phones seem to have rather decent reception when in an obvious strong signal area. Where Moto still seems to excel, is in those fringe areas. When you fluctuate between 0-1 bars...Moto stays connected much stronger/more reliably. Recently had the new Droid MAXX and compared to my Note 2, streaming music never missed a beat. Samsung struggled a bit. I'm sure in the 1st update, there will be a radio patch to make the 3 even better.
Number of bars mean nothing especially across two different make and model of phones. What's important is the data throughput and latency and voice quality.

I understand this. Bars are used to graphically represent. dBm is a more accurate way to gauge it. Just saying Moto stayed more reliable at say...-107dBm than Samsung did.
I'm here in San Diego and signal is great. My house is a butthole for letting signal to the phone, but the Note 3 manages to get great signal.

Absolutely correct. If I remember correctly, the Nexus was getting a terrible signal and there was an update in which there were more bars but the dBa measurements were the same. However, I used real world testing when comparing the Moto Droid Maxx to my GS3. I couldn't place a call in a fringe area with my GS3 while the Motorola held up well. I found that the GS3 was able to hold a better wifi signal on the fringe of the signal radius.

I seem to be getting a better signal with the Noe 3 than I did with the GS3. An area along my commute that had no signal with my s3, has some signal on the Note 3.

S5 signal reception better than S3 & S4?

Especially the Verizon version. M8 is about equal or slightly weaker than the S4. That metal body apparently needed a little more plastic strip areas.

yeah its not always like that.
As far the M8, it seems no better or 1 to 2 dBm points weaker than the S4. We also have a 5s and DNA to compare with. In order of reception:
DNA
5s
S4/M8
My family's comparison suggests the M8 is not a great device for radio reception on the Verizon network in the areas we live. The wifi also seems weaker on the M8. Too much metal?
The one phone we have not tested yet is the S5, so as per the topic, does it have better reception than previous Samsung models to the S4? I am not juggling anymore phones and my son
is an HTC fan. Loves the DNA and the M8.
I would like to know this as well before I make the jump

I live in an area where I'm a tenth of a mile in any direction I can get good 4g signal, but at my house I can't even get a string signal on my roof, so I feel like I have good perspective on signal strength. I had 2 note 3's and one was better than the other but both pretty poor and would loose signal 75% of the time. The s4 and s4 mini have the best. The HTC one was in between those two extremes. So far with the s5 I feel like it is a bit better than the s4 and on our with the s4 mini.

That's impressive. I hope this is true for the San Diego area because I currently have a HTC rezound from over 2 years ago and looking to upgrade possibly to the gs5. The rezound has great reception in my opinion and I'm hoping if I do get the gs5 that it will be just as good if not better.

How are the radios?

How's everyone's reception been? Compared to a galaxy s4 or any other phone you had prior. Better? Worse?

I had the Note 4 before getting this and I've noticed it to be around 4 to 6 dBM worse. WiFi is noticeably weaker as well. I have the 64GB variant.
One reason I purchased this phone was the supposed better radios of Motorola. It is noticeably worse than the Samsung Note 4 and HTC One M8. I wish I could just go back to my M8 but that is impossible without repurchasing one and wasting my Edge ;p. I never lost 4G with my M8 while I lost 4G with the Note 4 in a few areas and many times with the Droid Turbo today. Very disappointed in the radio performance, will try again tomorrow with new Sim Card, but I think I might be screwed. The phone is stable at my home and slightly better than the Note 4 here. At work is where I had all the trouble.

Very disappointed in the radio performance, will try again tomorrow with new Sim Card, but I think I might be screwed.

I'd wait a few weeks before doing anything drastic. As with any new phone, there will likely be some software bugs to address that may affect signal in the first few weeks.
I can attest for certain the Radio is MUCH better than any phone that I have had. (S4,S5,One M8, Note 4, iPhone6 etc)
My experience that is much different -is a 20 Mile stretch of road to my Home. I live in Fringe Reception area in Norther California (Foresthill) I haven't ever been able to drive the 20 Mile Stretch home without dropping a phone call.( This usually happens numerous times) With The Turbo I was able to stay connected to Verizon Customer Service the Entire 20 Miles to my Home!
The only Bummer about this experience is that I was on the Phone with Verizon regarding the lack of Simul Data! What a complete ****ter! This is something that I will give props to Apple about. The day the iPhone 6 was released the phone could use VOLTE . Kind horse **** that a Flagship VZ Moto exclusive device doesnt have the proper software to use VOLTE on release.

Good to hear, so is it a guarantee that when it gets VOLTE it will have Simultaneous data tand voice on every phone call? Also which version of the turbo did u get as far as material.
I purchased the 32GB Red (Carbon) <- thinking about getting the black LOL.
It's for sure a software issue with the phone. My iPhone 6 was able to access VOLTE the day of release in my area. It's unreal that VZ & Moto wouldn't require the feature to be working on release date. It appears to be an issue with the 2014 Moto X as well from what I have been reading
I will say the phone is incredibly snappy, and smooth in performance. I can only imagine how the performance will be when we get L on the phone.
PS. Haven't had enough time to compare the WIFI performance but that is usually not a problem for me anyways- I have 4 Ubiquiti Access Points installed at my home. The way the system works is each wifi AP hands off the WIFI signal simultaneously from one AP to another- all without interrupting whatever you may be streaming The most important item to me is my Cell Reception and a huge Bonus that I can stay connected driving the 20 mile stretch home.

As far as mobile data is concerned, seems to be about the same or slightly better than my G3, however WiFi is significantly worse.
DROID Turbo 1x and WiFi:
LG G3 1x and WiFi:
DROID Turbo LTE:
LG G3 LTE:
Wifi signals are WAY down compared to my other devices which include iphone 5S, 6, HTC One M8, Note II, Note 3, Galaxy S5...
Have the 64GB black nylon one.
I'll have to try outdoors. We have a long range wifi extender to cover a large section of the pasture and all my other devices get a decent signal up to 1km away. This will be a good test.
I had a carbon fiber case on my S5 (Cygnett IIRC) that blocked the LTE signal really bad. That's the disadvantage to having real carbon fiber LOL.
Not sure about the ballistic nylon. Does it have CF in it?
I wish the back came off, I have a friend who's an RF test engineer and he could see if it has attenuation in the (un) desired ranges.

Looking forward to hearing the results of your outdoor test. And while you're out there, can you check on how readable the screen is in direct sunlight?

There is a big difference between holding on to a phone call and getting good data (4G).
Do you get a good 4G signal also? Thanks
My signal not so good with Droid Turbo
I have had around -105 dbm 4G LTE which is 2 bars and have had a few times where I had 3 bars. Normally in the same area I would have 4 to 5 bars. I also had a time where I tried to make a call and it was on 1x when I was in a big city where there is 4G towers. After the call it went to 4G. I sure hope we all get this issue fixed. Other than this issue most everything has been great.

Man that sucks the big one. The bars you are seeing are probably 3g or 1x voice signal. Which still sucks if you download an app called advanced signal it will tell you exactly what is going on. I'm defiantly gonna hold off until it gets solved. I have to pay full retail as I am on unlimited Thanks for your input.
My LTE and Wifi strength are also down.
Siting in my office, I used to get full bars of wifi reception on my DNA. Now its at 2 bars. Same goes for my LTE signal.
I'll do some actual testing later, but I hope this gets resolved quickly
Yeah the wifi is killing me. It's incredibly noticeable in various parts of my house that I used to have stellar wifi.
I've had LTE where my M8 struggled to even get 3G. I'm quite pleased with the signal.
I've had better LTE and 3G reception versus my S3. Seems like calls sound better. Better (quicker acquisition, less drops) GPS performance as well. Wifi signal reception seems to be on par. Both phones in the same room a few feet apart, are within 1-2dBm of each other. I haven't tested performance, or compared client statistics on my wireless controller yet.
Signal
Has anyone tried just taking the phone on the road and checking signals not bars but 3G or 4G. If the phone doesnt have voice and internet at the same time that would explain why the phone would go to 1X when your on a call then back up when you get off. If you out and about do you have 4G where you did with previous phones not bars but 4G? The bars on my Droid Maxx tell me what my voice signal strength is not 4G I believe it is the same with the turbo. The WIFI deal Im cluless if it doesnt connect then it doesnt connect. again though it doesnt depend on howmany bars you have. It is how the phone performs. Im in a real crap signal area I can have 1X on my Maxx and still be able to make calls and text because I may have only one bar on the phone. Thanks

Look back a few pages, I posted dBm readings between phones. I agree though, comparing bars is useless.
Just figured I'd chime in. I swapped my kevlar version for the normal version and my wifi is back to the same strength that my G2 had. There was definitely something wrong with the kevlar one I had...
