So a recent "discovery of mine" has led me to want to share some information. I signed up with project fi and used it on my nexus while using Verizon on my s6 edge. Due to a broken fingerprint sensor i have sent my edge off to be repaired. I out my Verizon sim ij my nexus. If i use hangouts dialer i am able to still make calls and texts with my project fi number. And the regular dialer uses my Verizon number. It's like having dual sim in the phone. In case anyone else wants this.
Activate your project fi on your nexus
Set hangouts to your default sms
Make call and text to make sure everything is working
Take out sim
Put in other carriers sim
Reboot phone
Use hangouts to continue to send texts and hangouts dialer to make calls with project fi
Use normal dialer to make calls with current sim phone number.

I guess this is somewhat expected. Hangouts dialer uses your Project Fi aka "google voice" number while the normal dialer app uses your SIM card number. For non-Project Fi users this works the same except the hangouts dialer will use their assigned Google Voice number even with the SIM out.
It gave me a new number. Maybe that's why it's interesting to me.

Curious as to how to make it work. At first I couldnt even download the apk from the play store as it said wasnt compatible with my device. Got the apk elsehwere on this site and still cant get past the missing voicemail password screen.
I, too, am having trouble getting VVM to work.
Is anyone using visual voicemail?
Is it setup on your account through at&t? AFAIK, its a feature that has to be "turned on", much like a data plan, etc. if you have an "LTE" phone (so, an lte imei) you should be able to get your account provisioned for lte and visual voicemail. But even after all this, its still may not work. Worth the try though unless someone else has gotten it to work elsewhere.
Take what I said with a grain of salt, I could be wrong, but think this is how that vvm works.
Edit: alternatively, Google voice's visual voicemail works on this phone.

Att's VVM is a two step headache when it comes to android. First, you need to have it provisioned on your account and then the app only works on approved phones. It worked just fine on my vivid when it was stock, but once rooted and on a custom ROM, the app didn't work anymore. I started using GV and have been much happier with it.

Yes I have an lte data plan on my account and have visual voicemail enabled. I've checked all thise with at&t but I cant get the at&t visual voicemail app to work on this device. It just hangs when trying to set my password. I was wondering if I'm the only one with this issue
I know about google visual voicemail working but I dont use that number as my main. I try to keep them seperate, you know.

You don't have to. I still use my mobile number for everything, but have my voicemails forwarded to Google voice. If you have a Google voice number, just download the GV app and let it set up your voicemail. People will call your main number, but GV picks up to leave a message. The caller will not know the difference and you still get your voicemails to your phone. You can even have GV display the voicemails right in the call log.

This is exactly what I did as well. Use my regular number for making and receiving calls, unanswered calls forwarded to Google Voice (using **004* number), then set "Do Not Disturb" in Google Voice so that all calls go straight to voicemail.
Now, people calling me hear 4 rings (the usual number of rings) and if I don't answer, it immediately plays my GV greeting and a beep for the message.
Using the integration to the phone's call log even gives me a "Play" button right along with missed call notifications. It's pretty sweet and I highly recommend it.
Hello, I am a Sprint customer, and I would very much like to switch to a Nexus 4 on a prepaid carrier. My biggest concern is being able to maintain my google voice functionality. On Sprint I have my phone number integrated so I can text from my computer using my regular phone number. What would the process be to switch to a Nexus 4?
Should I port my number into Google Voice? How will I approach my new carrier in order to keep this phone number?

I'm using T-Mobile Pre-Paid, I noticed that I can't force that service to use Google Voice Inbox features, aka, when I get a voicemail, I have to dial T-Mobile mailbox to listen.
Other then that other Google Voice features seem to work normal.

I had this same problem. I switched to Straight Talk on ATT. If you go with ATT or an ATT MVNO you can forward the calls to your Google Voicemail. If you choose a prepaid TMo MVNO you cannot forward calls. If you choose post paid TMo, you can forward.
In the google voice settings, you have to disable the integration. There's a button for this. You will have two numbers. Port the main number to your new phone. And use the GVoice as a backup.
I'm not sure I was clear enough. The most important feature for me is the ability to text from Google voice of the web using my phone number from Sprint.
In order to preserve this functionality do I need to port my number to Google voice? What is the process?

I'm having a bit of difficulty understanding exactly how to set everything up.
The main thing is: I want to only have to give out my current phone # to people, not a new one.
Here's what I've done so far:
- Bought a Nexus 4
- Paid for the $30 T-mobile prepaid plan
- Activated the plan
Now, when I go to port my number to Google Voice, it says that "Your mobile phone service plan will be terminated when you port your number to Google Voice."
Is this what I want to happen? What's my next step?
You can't port your phone's mobile number to gv and still use it on your phone. Should have ported the existing number to gv and gotten a new number activation for your phone for gv to forward to.
You don't really say what you are looking to do with gv so more info might help.

If you want your existing mobile number to go to google, and have google forward calls to your mobile, you'll want a new Tmo number, and port the old one to Google.
How do you want this all to work. What do you want to use Google voice for?

Since the t-mobile plan only gives me 100 minutes, I was planning on using VOIP through Groove-IP, which seems to require a google voice number.
You can certainly do that. But the number shown in caller id when placing calls from groove ip will be different than the number shown when calling from your mobile network number. They are two separate numbers.

this isn't true. You cannot forward calls from your t-mobile number to GV, but you can forward calls from GV to your t-mobile number. All the other GV features work as well on the $30 a month plan. and as for voip, I still have not found a viable solution and probably won't until the low latency problem is addressed in the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 4.

True you can forward gv to phone, but doesn't that used your plan minutes? You can't use the conditional call forwarding, so no gv as voicemail, unless you call tmo to disable their voicemail. You also can not use gv to call, because it will not complete the call to your phone to connect you.
It's a shame because I really like using gv as my craigslist contact.
Groove IP works just fine for both incoming and outgoing calls using a Google voice number. If Groove IP is running, you will receive incoming calls to your Google Voice number over IP. If it is not running, and you have your GV settings to forward to your mobile number, it will forward to that number.
Just get a Google Voice number and use that. I've been strictly using Google Voice for over a year now with no issues. I don't even know my "real" phone number.

I have tried changing the forwarding numbers, but it won't let me change anything. I get an error saying the network won't let me. I have also tried changing my voicemail number (the one that is dialed when you long press #1 for vm speeddial) but I get a similar message saying the netowrk won't allow it.
I have discovered this xposed module http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2106490 seems to be on the right track, since it does edit the number registered to the sim card, but it doesn't allow you to edit the voicemail number registered to the sim card.
Does anyone know of a way to do this? The only partial solution I've found is by adding my Google Voice number to my sim card so I can dial 1# and get through, but I would like Google Voice to replace tmobile's voicemail altogether. This still does not forward callers to Google Voice's voicemail unless I set my phone to airplane mode.
Are you using a pay as you go plan? If so, those don't support call forwarding (which is used for Google voicemail). If you are, you can call up T-Mobile and ask them to disable your voicemail. That should allow Google voice to pick up you're voicemail after so many rings.

Yes. I'm on the monthly plan and it allows call forwarding. But, like I said, you could achieve a similar effect by having TMO disable your voicemail all together, and google voice will pick up your voicemail after so many rings.

Thanks very much, I'll give that a shot! This has been driving me crazy since I switched to Tmo in February, and I've just dealt with it until now.

I'm on TMoUS with the N4 and use G Voice for my voicemail. It does work fine and I can just use the in-phone voicemail setup to switch my VM carrier. I do have a post-paid monthly 4g plan though. It sounds like you already have G Voice set to forward your number to the TMo number so that's fine.
I don't think that disabling the TMo voicemail will work by itself because I don't think it will fall back to the previous number. It would probably just ring or just end the call. You could also just use G Voice for your dialer too and run everything over data.

Google Voice automatically sends to voicemail after 25 seconds. I learned this when I was using VoIP on the $30 pre-paid plan. Disabling TMO voicemail is necessary as it picks up before 25 seconds.

I would, but I don't always have a reliable mobile data signal, so I get a lot of missed/dropped calls. I'd love to be able to just drop tmo voice service entirely, though, and get 100% free voice calls!
I called Tmo and had my voicemail disabled the other day, and I'm still not able to set gv as the primary voicemail or set a forwarding number. I still get the 'contact your carrier' message. when I try to set gv voicemail, and I get a network/sim error when I try to change the forwarding numbers. I got a new sim recently, but I can rule that out because it's the same error with both sim cards in, as well as with the sim removed.
After installing Google voice, did you go into the phone, click setup from there and then select voicemail? Then change carrier to Google voice and select setup. I just use the app/widget instead of trying to dial from the phone to check for voicemail.
I have no idea about forwarding calls though.
If it doesn't go through, maybe try and un install them re install GV

If you're on prepaid, you'll never be able to set up forwarding. However, Google voicemail should still work properly if you have disabled your T-mo voicemail and configured the gvoice app. It will just take a long time before it picks up.
This week I updated to Oxygen OS 9.0.12 and updated my Google voice as well to 2019.07.232051384.
Now wherever I try to make a call using the stock rooms dialer I get the error:
Google Voice Calling Prohibited.
The Google voice app must be updated to continue calling with Google voice.
My only option then is to use my carrier number.
Anyone else having this issue? Since I updated the Oxygen OS and Apps same day I have no idea which side is broken. My note 9 runs the identical version of Google Voice and neither phone show any newer version available and the Note 9 works just fine.
So upon further testing I found something interesting. It seems like when I use the Switch Data Card option the correct APN for each sim card do not properly switch over. Oddly the internet and data still work and I can make calls in Hangouts just fine, however I can't dial from Google voice or the native dialing app using voice, I CAN send and receive SMS.
When I switch the data card then manually go in and swap APN the dialer and Google voice app start working properly without any errors.
Shouldn't the Switch Data Card option automatically select the correct APN or at least the last one used for each respective SIM?
