I screwed up the Z3 for unlocking the bootloader without backing up the TA (at that time Sony did not had any announcement on the fact!) so I want to make sure this time a the status of things. This is as it is now, Nov 3rd since hopefully people will find solutions as the time progresses.
For the Z5C:
1) Is there a final confirmation on DRM keys loss by opening the bootload? I read multiple forum's post and most assume yes, some say did not notice anything...
2) Is it safe to use Xperifirm to upgrade the Android version? For instance, would I able to get back to my current version in case someone finds an exploit on it...
3) Is there a way to backup the TA with the locked bootloader? (With Z3 I think it is true)
4) The Z3 has a "patch" to overcome the loosing DRM keys for the full camera functionality. Is there a patch too for the Z5C in case I still decide to unlock the bootloader?
Thanks so much, an amazing community!
Drm is certainly lost if you unlock your Z5C. Tested by myself. Camera now is ridden with red and green noise in lowlight. Clear Image Zoom won't work anymore. Regret it so much.

Thanks for the confirmation.
Lets hope someone does like the Z3c and make a patch to restore the camera full functionality.

Is it affected in manual mode though? And did you OEM unlock it as shown here:

That is a great question! I mean, one could do that and see no warning of loosing DRM keys at all; there is just a warning of a least secure device. A follow up question is, What if you lock the bootloader back? Has anyone check for improvement on the low-light camera?
Without a warning on DRM loss, Sony could even be held responsible, even if it is a "developer mode" option...

It is incorrect info. (he should edit OP, it creates a lot of spam posts...)
Since DRM key is forever lost when you unlock bootloader and it's not related to bootloader status, low-light functions won't come back.

Not sure if this will work with the Z1, mines already unlocked so can't find out. From the pictures, it looks like it just uses the same method of unlocking the bootloader that we use, but just automated instead?????

just thought I'd share, if it hasn't already been shared.
The link do not work. BTW, who cares if there is an Official way to do it?
I will not recommended to use it even if it work as this kingo and company are not very safe.
I was just sharing incase there were people who are lazy enough to want a one click bootloader unlocker...or in this case it looks like 2-3 clicks? If it really is easier than the official way then why not?
I do not know anything about kingo, just happened to stumble upon it. Maybe it's spam/malware?

Kingo Root was already found to be sending your phone's IMEI number to a server in China. So why in the world would you even consider using this? Especially when Sony themselves provide you with a very easy way of doing it and complete instructions. I guess if you're lazy enough to not care about the potential security risk just to save a few clicks, then you deserve your IMEI to be stolen....

I would be wary of any one click solution like this.
In the past kingo has been identified with malware, but it cleaned its act up a bit.
The official way is so easy, and the use of flashtool is as well (And that is 100% trusted)
Unofficial unlock
I'm very interested in unofficial bootloader unlock since there is no way to unlock most branded phones like my EU Vodafone version. I don't understand why Sony is doing this and why they refuse to unlock it even if I want to pay for the unlock.
I see that Kingo is also using official method so it is useless to me
Simple poll, I'm wondering how many people couldn't wait for root and just unlocked their BL.
No

Until now I'm surprised that so few people have unlocked theirs.

Not yet. The dev scene for the Z3/Z3C is absolutely abysmal (kudos to the few devs working on it though), but I'm waiting for either a fully functional AOSP ROM or a locked BL rooting method. Will root when either becomes available.
I can't!
Grrr...

Did it have any effect on the camera and low light like ppl are assuming? Does remote play still work for the PS4?
I'll wait. Not unlocked yet, and if there never exists an exploit - i don't unlock my BL.

Nop. I really don't want to loose any features. So I'm hoping someone finds a way of rooting without unlocking.
Not yet. I'm just waiting for a couple solid custom roms to hit the scene to put me over the edge.

Yes,i
It have any effect on the camera .Especially,on low light. I do not have PS4,So unable to test.
nope, not yet, main reason what i read about the photos quality in auto.
I'm also not sure what happens with warranty in case of a problem (don't know if you can revert the phone to its stock condition and claim the warranty)
Not yet but seriously thinking about it. Not bothered about the camera issues as they seem fairly insignificant if using flash. As for the sound, it's pretty crap as it is..all phones sound better with viper4android anyway. The only thing stopping me is lack of custom roms, if slim or candyRom were available I'd root for sure

I'm also torn between those two things, custom roms will come, I don't doubt that at all, I can live without custom roms for now, but I can't really live without V4A, especially since I'm going on a month+ vacation
and carrying about 70gb of music with me, then the sound really needs to be perfect.
The only thing worrying me right now, is what if Sony decides to bring out some software/algorithm that improves the camera a lot, but only works when your DRM keys are intact.
Once root is there without having to unlock the BL custom roms will come by "masses" I hope/think.
I still have about 5 days to think about my decision....
No Just wait for root and save DRM key before
I didn't but i bougnt an used z3c and when i tried to update it with pc companion i realized it was unlocked. Now bad camera but it is rooted
I am not all that familiar with unlocked bootloaders but after skimming some of the posts on the Moto Z Force I am seeing a lot of discussion about, I replied to one thread decided perhaps I should start a new.
The bootloader is able to be unlocked from the settings menu.
First you must go to settings then about phone. Go to build number and tap it 7 times. This will enable developer options.
Again go to the settings menu, go to developer options and there is a toggle for OEM unlocking.
Hope this helps as I am new to xda(new member, long time reader)

Dude you rock! But will this allow root? Using known methods like ping-pong or towel root? I've been with Samsung for 6 years, so this Moto z force thing is still new to me. And I'm just starting to dig through the threads on this.
I just made the switch from Samsung myself so I am not entirely sure. I happened to stumble upon that accidentally and saw a few questions about unlocking a bootloader. Now I am not sure if it makes a difference but my device is not under contract as I paid full price and activated on prepaid.
This will not unlock your bootloader

This will not unlock your bootloader. This will not allow root. There is almost zero chance of this phone ever having its bootloader able to be unlocked and you can call Verizon at (800) 922-0204 to thank them for it. They are tyrants and I will never give them a dollar.
Yeah its the same for me, it will allow you to unlock the bootloader, but it will void the warranty so I haven't done it yet but I will later on. Hopefully it works! It make it really easy to root with Verizon.
Please read everything in this thread. Thank you.

Checking this box will NOT unlock the bootloader. Anyone that has had a phone where you CAN in fact unlock the bootloader knows this.
Would quadrooter exploits work on this phone? This phone is running the snapdragon chip set and has the following vulnerabilities:
CVE-2016-2503, CVE-2016-2504 and CVE-2016-5204
Y'all should be able to check your phones as well using the quadrooter scanner app from play s.

It would take an experienced dev to turn those exploits into a root avenue for us. I doubt that person will show up for this device.
They may very well show up. This is a new phone and somewhat a power house. A lot of people leaving Samsung and coming to this device. I just left the gs6. So I am still holding up hope. It's still new and may take a little time.

This will be one of the few Verizon phones which will get the Dev love it needs to be unlocked and rooted.Being now in my thirties and running Arch Linux for years I really don't care anymore,..there isn't a need for me ..I get my Rock's off on my box and keep my phone working .
I can clarify, my Moto Z Force does have those three vulnerabilities.
These vulnerabilities are global for Android MM, so perhaps someone, somewhere can use the exploit to gain root on Android - we'd be able to use that method on our phones. Here's to being hopeful!
Hello, I'd like to know if unlocking the BL of the OP5 decrease the performance, like picture quality, or sound or something else
(The phone itself is absolutely gorgeous & so powerful, no need root for tweaks or to upgrade its software style in my opinion) but having root access is fundamental
So does it worth it ?
I come from Sony Xperia world and I noticed a little drop of photo quality, also we were losing Sony special features (DRM keys etc.) that's why i'm kinda worried
I searched a bit on the web but i wanted user feedback
Thanks in advance for consideration

short but clear, thanks
I know someone gave an answer already, but just to add on. OnePlus doesn't care if you unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery or ROM, or root. As long as a warranty claim cannot be linked to a software change, like OC/OV, etc they will cover it.
I think unlock is necessary and the sooner the better when you just get your OP5.
Because When you need ROOT, you HAVE to unlock and it will clear all your data.
Flash other Roms needs unlock too.
Why not unlock the sooner the better?
When you use phone for long time, unlock will be a trouble l, as you need to backup many data.

not at all
I'm a recent convert to the Essential phone and as I usually do with a new device, I'll read up on all the various quirks inherent to it. One thing I've noticed that seems to pop up all over the internet on searches is the relative ease it is to brick this phone. So until I fully understand all the ins and outs I won't even take a factory update. So ... when I enabled Developer Options I noticed this (see image). Phone has bootloader unlocked but in Dev Ops it shows OEM Unlock toggled off with text saying already unlocked. Suffice it to say I don't trust it. Leads me to think if I were to take an update this would default to off. I'm probably wrong but better safe than sorry after all I've read.
So ... Is this normal?
On my other phones, bootloader unlocked, sometimes it does this but obviously wrong. I wouldn't worry about it.

Took the update, no problems. I was basing my paranoia on experience with a Verizon'ated Google Pixel bootloader. Gawd I hated that phone. Let alone all the inherent issues it had, on disassembly the darn nubs for the antenna (coax) popped off the motherboard (see link for reference)
