VZW VoLTE? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was curious if anyone has tested VoLTE on VZW? I have searched and most of the info I see is either speculation or involves the Band 12 Tmob hack.
I did read where it was suggested you have to "purchase/add" the VoLTE feature for free on the Verizon website. I'm a little leery of trying that as I don't want to screw up my Unlimited Data Plan.

Are you talking about Advanced Calling 1.0 aka simultaneously being able to use voice and data? Then yes you can just go on Verizon's website to add it. It does not affect unlimited data.

It works just fine and it wont mess up your unlimited data. Call in and make sure they activate HD voice/advanced calling on your line. You can do it online but i have seen instances where it doesnt take after doing it from my verizon.... You wont regret it. It allows you to use internet services while on a call and calls between other usurs of HD voice and yourself on Verizon sound crystal clear.

Verizon Voip over LTE and Tablet sim use in smartphone

Ok - now that Google has finally integrated google voice into hangouts allowing VOIP calls over wifi and 3G/4G, I want to change over to a data only plan. The best plans of course are the tablet plans. I've done some research on this but there isn't all that much out there to confirm.
Is it possible to activate a Verizon tablet sim on a Verizon tablet then simply move it to a Verizon smartphone for data only use? I read one account that confirmed it was possible but for some reason they only were getting 3g speeds. Any help advice would be appreciated!!

VoLTE on Nexus 6 from Verizon

I went here , clicked on "Free Products", and found that my Nexus 6 was eligible for HD Voice. I signed up, checked out (for free), and it said that my phone now has HD Voice. The FAQ explains how to verify that it's actually working, as follows:
To verify Advanced Calling 1.0 is ready to use on an Android phone:
Open the Contacts app.
Tap on the Groups tab.
If you see a group named "Video Calling," this indicates that Advanced Calling 1.0 is ready for use.
Note: If you don't see the Video Calling group, turn off your phone and turn it back on again. If you still don't see it, verify that the latest software is installed on your phone.

My phone didn't pass that test, but I don't know if that's because I'm rooted. Or whether I'm confusing "HD Voice" with "Advanced Calling" which maybe I am. Kind of confusing.
I just tried this and was unable to send or receive calls. Kept getting all circuits are busy until I took it off my account.

Yea I'm sure volte isn't enabled for the n6 right now on any network.

There needs to be a software update to our phones to make it work. now that vz is for sure getting the phone we should have a way to do that soon.

Right, but it's confusing that the Nexus 6 is identified as "eligible" for HD Voice, given that HD Voice is part of Advanced Calling, which is Verizon's name for VoLTE. But I suppose it's not remarkable that there is misleading and confusing information on Verizon's website.

hd voice isnt the same as volte. tmobile has had hd voice for a while now, and volte is only voice over lte. two differing things.

That's what I mean when I say the Verizon site is confusing. Here's what the FAQ says:
What is Advanced Calling?
Advanced Calling 1.0 is a first generation suite of services enabled by VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology. VoLTE is a new technology platform that delivers voice calls over the 4G LTE network instead of the traditional voice network.
The benefits of Advanced Calling 1.0 include:HD Voice
1-way or 2-way video calls* (including support for video calls over Wi-Fi)
6-way conference calls
What is HD Voice?
HD Voice delivers clearer, natural-sounding audio when both parties are using HD Voice-enabled phones that are connected to our 4G LTE network.
Reading that, and seeing that my phone was "eligible" for HD Voice, made me think that maybe VoLTE was being rolled out for the Nexus 6. Obviously it wasn't, but you can see the source of the confusion.

ah, i see. it is a little confusing how they set it up. seems like they have hd calling on their volte enabled line. tmibile does it on their non volte enabled lines. but both caller and reciever have to have hd calling for it to work.

My understanding is that the Nexuz 6, while it will support Advanced Calling (VoLTE), it will only support HD Voice and not HD Video - just like the iPhone 6/6 Plus. So that test is actually moot.

Source?
I just added this feature to my account and nothing happened. Calls still work and the "LTE" label still disappears from above the signal icon (meaning the data connection is still going away during calls, and therefor VoLTE isn't working).
It can't be a coincidence that Verizon sees the N6 as compatible. My wife's Verizon Note 4 comes up as not compatible, for example. So, they must be enabling certain models on purpose and they enabled the N6.
My assumption is that there will be a software update to enable this on the N6 by default at some point before the phone launches on Verizon. However, maybe there is a way to manually enable it now? Does anyone know of any dialer codes or settings that relate to VoLTE? Is VoLTE working on any other carrier?

no other carrier has it yet, and verizon just started rolling it out(and most likely its not in your area yet).
I have a question.... When Verizon do release the update to initiate VOLTE for this phone will someone be able extract for us non Verizon nexus 6 owners to download it? Advanced calling is initiated on my account because I had the g3 so I'm hoping we can get the update when its released.

Not possible.
Google is adding in the standardized backend interface to have VoLTE working, but I am pretty much going to assume that it will be implemented carrier by carrier basis since there is also going to need to be changes to how towers/carriers hand off the protocol.

Pretty sure he meant would it be possible to add it to a non-Verizon purchased Nexus running on Verizon's network. Not to port Verizon's VoLTE to another carrier.
That being said, it's pretty much impossible to answer until we know how Verizon implements this. If I had to guess I would say it could be added to the /oem partition similar to AT&T's stuff. Either way, I would say it's pretty likely it would be added to any device running with a Verizon sim.
We all need to remember that Volte is only available in a few cities yet
Just for giggles I added the Advanced Calling to my cart. (I didn't check out).. I noticed that it was going to remove ringback tones if I proceeded. Weird.

Do you have a source for that? You could very well be right, but from reading verizon's website, it sounded like it was supposed to work anywhere with lte coverage.

It is LTE and phone compatibility dependent, not area. Unless your area does not have LTE.
I would imagine once 5.1 hits we will have volte/advanced calling on verizon. However none of this will work until verizon officially activates and allows this phone on their network as more than an unrecognized device. Like others have said though google still has some backend work to do to make it possible on their end as well.

WIFI calling on VZW

Hey guys been doing some searching do not have a definitive answer. I know Verizon Wireless recently enabled wifi calling on their network for iOS and select android devices which was back at the end of last year. As Android has native support wifi calling since Lolipop I believe, does anybody know if wifi calling works on nexus 6p with a verizon SIM card inserted? I have read different places its part of advance calling, or you may need the verizon messages app, so conflicting information, my new job provides me a phone with VZW, I am currently on T-Mobile do not want to carry two phones but VZW gets next to no service in my neighborhood, talking 1 or 2 bars of 1X only! Any help would be appreciated.
There is currently no wifi calling on VZW and the nexus 6P unless you use VZW's message+ app.
I'd be surprised if any non VZW Android phone ever gets it.

Thanks! But the wifi calling definitely works with that app installed? I use google voice so SMS isnt what I am looking for as that always works on wifi, I am talking about actual phone calls lol which I know in this day and age is crazy talk
Edit - you mean this app right? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.verizon.messaging.vzmsgs
yeah that's the app. It has a voice call option, I just put the phone in airplane mode and enabled wifi. It would NOT make a call so maybe I have no idea what the heck I'm talking about.

No Data while on Phone

Haven't had much time to fiddle with this thing; most of my experience with it has been fantastic. One thing that is urking me is that I can't figure out how to enable data while on the phone. Can anyone give me some assistance on this?
VoLTE has not been enabled. Modern phones without two radios require simultaneous voice and data to be Volte. I am speaking from my experience with Verizon, the VoLTE option may be enabled on other carriers. The option is there, try it out.

If you're on Verizon, you can't do simultaneous voice and data until Verizon officially approves it for their network and ZTE puts out an update to add in Verizon VoLTE support.

Unable to use data while on the phone.

Just purchased this phone and was very pleased at how fast it is and how many features it has for the price.
I did run into one issue that was a bit of a surprise. While on a telephone call, the data is disconnected. I am on Verizon. Is there a way to get talk and data to work at the same time? On my Samsung phones it works fine.
I read somewhere that you had to enable HD calling but there doesn't seem to be an option for it in the settings.

This is normal for retail unlocked devices on Verizon, because they don't let non-branded devices use VoLTE (yet), so the device has to step down to 1xRTT (CDMA) to make a voice call which does not support simultaneous voice and data. Verizon branded devices are allowed to use VoLTE and can therefore use voice and data at the same time.

Then your account must be properly provisioned for it I guess. I know the last Moto I had on Verizon that was what they told me.
