[HELP] Mobile Location Service Not Working Properly. - Galaxy S6 Edge+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
I have been experiencing location problems across multiple official ROMs on my S6 Edge+.
The phone is showing incorrect location when using only the mobile network to determine position. I live in Bulgaria using the Vivacom provider, yet the phone is set automatically to Ghana in Africa when using the mobile connection only.
The moment I connect to a WiFi or I Turn ON the GPS, it immediately shows the correct location.
It appears that it is not a GPS/A-GPS problem but the fact that it is not getting the right location when using the 3g(HPSA) network.
I never had such problems with my previous device(s3) and I am using the same chip(cut to fit the nano slot).
Is there a fix as it is very annoying problem. I am getting wrong checkins and it is messing up with all my apps that are using the location service. The problem is that I cannot always get the gps location while in a building and I don't have WIFI always available.
Is it that Samsung just sucks?
Best Regards!

Bump,
It is not a mobile provider issue eather. When I use the hotspot to connect my laptop to the internet, it shows the currect location as well.
I guess it is a software issue...

Does anybody has that problem at all or it's only me?

Weather/My Location Not Working

My home screen is not getting any weather display - when I run the weather app directly I can add locations and view the weather for them, but whenever it tries to update "My Location" it fails with a connection error. Any ideas? I'm using an O2 contract SIM card if that makes any difference (connected via WiFi also).

Pure guesswork here, but assuming you're indoors or have no GPS signal, your phone would try to use cell towers to locate you and give you the current weather. Using a WiFi connection probably means it can't locate you?
Try without WiFi on the first time so that it can get a location, and maybe subsequent updates via WiFi will assume that your "My Location" has stayed the same?
Just a guess but dose it need a GPS signal to get the location or does it take it off the cell towers.

I should post a bit quicker
It's not that unfortunately, I've tried it both with a GPS signal and with WiFi turned off. Google maps knows where I am also. Most odd.
i have the same problem today. Worked through Activesync this morning. Internet seems OK today but weather is showing a connection error!
Maybe the location service (or the weather service) is down?
I just disabled it from showing in weather tab by using duttys disable location cab. Couldn't get it to work either so its useless to me.
all ok here
It never worked correctly on the custom roms for HD - and everyone was putting it down to "pre-release" software lol. I either get a connection error or no weather for your location!!!
I wonder if it's related to your service provider - I'm with O2 UK, anybody else have the same and got this working please?
I found a semi-decent workaround at least - the location used on the home screen is the one you set as your own in the world clock tool. That can either be the dynamic "My Location" or a city of your choosing.
I'm with Vodafone, and it seems to be working fine for me. Did you make sure that the 'location' settings are set right? i.e. HTC location service is checked, and 'Improve location service by collecting data at any time when device is in use' is set to on?
also on vodafone and its working fine for me
Orange - not working
next time you're out and about, try to update the weather. I have a polaris with WM6.5 which refuses to update at my home location but drive 20m down the road and it finds my location and tells me the weather. unfortunately when i return home it won't update, it's stuck on the wrong place and time. very chuffing annoying. I'm on O2 contract. the "helpful" erk on the helpline advised that as my handset is not sold as WM6.5 they could not help, what a cop out - [email protected]
rivets
Still no joy here, tried as many different combinations and scenarios as I can think of. I guess it just won't work for me with my SIM card, for whatever reason.
I get that problem depending on where i am. I'm on o2 aswell.
I am on O2 and nver got it to work so disabled it.
I had to agree to use the Google location service to get the weather working.

"Connection error while attempting to download weather data"

Hello guys, im new to the forum and this type of phone so pardon me if i come across ignorant i can assure you this is not through arrogance, i have searched the website for 2days and could not find any advice on this matter and get this message 99% of the time! "Connection error while attempting to download weather data, retry?" (keeps happening no matter how many times i retry)
I have tried hard reset, soft reset even changed my network thinking the data reception was bad but this still seems to be the case where ever i am positioned with my phone.
This is an awesome phone, but an incredibly consuming one that can be frustrating at times! without the guys on this forum I dont think I would have lasted one day!
Any help would be much appreciated!
Make sure your 3G settings do not include "this network connects through a proxy".

i have the same problem and already do that but nothing, always the connection error too!
just a question, you have problem with the connection only when you are trying to download weather update?
Hi,
I get this issue depending on my location. At my home I will get this message, but when I am at my office in Birmingham, it would update the my location weather no problems.
I think that if the place you are trying to get weather data for, is not on the database, then it will give an error. Because the software is not intelligent enough to find the 'nearest' place to your location.
The other problem can be caused by your telecoms, and how your 3g data is routed. As other have mentioned, this might be fixed with the proxy setting.
Oh, and I think you need to be receiving a 3g signal for this to work, I've never seen it work over GPRS...
To be honest, I've disabled the auto updating feature of this now. Because if I really needed to know about the weather of 'my location', I can always take a peek outside!
Sorry that you can't find any information on this. I'm surprised as I think it could possibly be the 2nd most asked question on here behind the old issues with slow SMS delivery. Here a summary of my understanding.
A local Cell tower is used to provide My Location data. Not all locations can be automatically updated Using My Location but most (can be automatically updated by adding the location to a list. A data connection is required and you need to enable Google location services.
It is known behavour for the My Location to all of a sudden start working when you are out and about as your phone connects to a different cell tower in a different location. I for one cannot get My Location dataq in Cheltenham but when I go to Gloucester I can get around 4 different "locations" on my way to work.
There was talk that part of this might be related to multiple locations having the same name and this causing problems with My Location selecting the correct data from the Accuweather database.
Hope this helps a bit althoughn I doubt we will get a fix.
I cannot currently remember if people with different service providers have different behavours with this service.
I got the same problem after using the Sim Contacts Fix... Found out that the stupid update changed the connection and told it to use a proxy server! Check if ur phone did the same thing as mine!
I can get my updates no probs without 3g, have no 3g coverage at the house at all, but what I have found is that when the weather would not work properly, and was giving the wrong location, I logged onto google maps, got a gps fix, and now the weather gives a spot on location, a very small village, that i would doubt being in any database.
I reckon weather pulls the location from the gps fix in googlemaps...
Just a thought.........

I think that is a slightly differemt issue caussing a similar effect. This issue has been around since the firat HD2 was released and mostly related to MyLocation successfully updating when in one area and not in another, with the same connectivity settings.
Regards.
to OP...
I too have failed to find a proper resolution to the "connection error...".
I know it can work on my phone, as I've seen it work perfectly around Devon & Bournemouth, both indoors and outdoors.
IMHO, it's definately a problem with Accuweather's database, regardless of connection type.
I used Duttys Disable Current Location cab to switch the pointless thing off.
Maybe one day someone will find a way to make it work for everywhere.

Hi,
Im interested. How do you get your weather updates? Are you using Wifi or do you believe that it is all done via GPS? Now a silly question, sorry. Do you now have your village as a defined location or is it only "My Location" that is automatically updating?
Regards.

At home, im using wifi, thelocation im referring to is the one that shows on the home screen after update, the nearest defined location that can be searched for is over 60 miles away in Plymouth.
I will try a non wifi update when i walk the dog again later, and see what that brings.....

well i have the same thing here...happens to me as well, i was thinking may be it is acuweather and our current location. Having said that i have not changed any thing in my 3 g connections. 50% of the tome works. so i am not really fussed about it
To the OP (and anyone), please also report this issue to HTC self via their website. If they know about this issue, maybe they can make a fix for it .
I had same problem and tried these:
Switched to airplane mode and wifi on. Tried update and successfully updated.
Switched to phone on wifi off. Tried update and not updated.
Removed all cities. Tried update for my location and successfully updated.
Added some cities. Tried update and not updated.
Weird
For me the weather location is working generally fine, even if often it doesn't recognize a town (smaller ones) and instead shows "My Location" instead of a name. The update is only working when I have EDGE or 3G coverage (or WiFi), not when only GPRS.
What is very strange for me is, that when not on WiFi (then all works fine), i.e. when on the phone network, it updates well some cities, and some won't (the ones which won't are two of the cities I added in the beginning to the list, i.e. Geneva and Nuremberg). All other cities I added work well for the updated. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I added them at a specific moment. When I deleted these cities and put them back in the list it won't help. I wonder if you can reset the weather program without making a hard reset, in order to see if it would help.
Fixed
Settings>connections>connections>advanced>select networks>edit (your gsm operator gprs/3g settings)>edit>next>next>advanced>servers
Select use specific server address and enter a dns . I'm using google dns 8.8.8.8.
Click OK>finish and yes to do you want to save changes. Click OK until connections window. Soft reset and try to update weather.
This happened to me when I removed JVH3 Weather City Editor.
once I reinstalled it, my error has gone away.
Ron
Have had the HD2 for a few weeks now, with no problems with weather. Went on holiday, came back, and getting the error as per this thread. Strangely it seemed like I was getting the update, then getting the error afterwards.
Spoke to my provider (T-mobile) who were next to useless (well that's unfair, I guess they suggested a lot of things but none worked).
Took out all cities from the application and updated - worked fine (and this was over GPRS as one of things T-mobile had me do was switch Band under phone settings (All Settings/Personal/Phone/GSM/UTMS Services/Band/Get Settings)).
Could it be as simple as an error in the weather data for ANY city causing the problem - not just your location? My location at home always seems to be detected fine...

Connection problems after no-do update

Hi. Since I updated ny phone I seem to have problems with the connection
If I am on wify online and at some point I switch to 3g then I'm not online anymore - neither any app nor the IE is online
The same happens if I lose the signal - if I get the signal back then sometimes I can't go online
The only way o found to fix the problem is to power off/on the phone.
Has anyone similar problems?

it's a problem of China Unicom's data configuration. The best way to settle it is turning ur phone to flight mode on and off.
My phone has done this since I had it. It's the one annoyance that I have with it.
Neither Pre-NoDo or NoDo fixed it.
I think it is to do with roaming / network switching. Sometimes it will lose it's data connection and the easiest way is to flick flight mode on and off. Usually only happens overnight while i sleep, some mornings i wake with no data connection active.
Indeed in HK i didn't really have this Problem... Will try the flight Mode on/off when im in China. Thanks

It appears that I still have the problem... Another ting is that I can't receive mms... I did install the sasung app but still its not working... I believe the OS is not optimized for every network even for the unlocked devices...

Some people have a problem with blutooth connection, their phone says it is connected but on other device says it is searching for connection

[Q] Some apps can't connect using wifi (but can using 3G) on my Motorola Defy

Hello,
If you don't want the boring details of how I discovered the problem feel free to skip the next couple of paragraphs and go straight to the technical details.
I got my first Android phone (Motorola Defy) a couple of weeks ago and at first I was only using it with wifi because my data plan wasn't activated yet. While playing with it a little I realised that I saw a lot less ads than my boyfriend on his 6 month old Defy. I thougt it was weird but, well, seeing less ads is not a big problem.
Then when I got my data plan I saw that when I wasn't home I saw a lot more ads, so I began to suspect it had to do with how my phone was connected to the internet : wifi or 3G.
Next I wanted to try out Astrid and when I tried to log in using my Google account it failed repeatedly. Until I disabled wifi and it logged in fine using 3G.
Then I installed RTÉ DocOnOne to listen to documentaries while falling asleep. When wifi is enabled, it cannot start up because it can't connect (network timeout). Over 3G, no problem.
At first I thought it was my router blocking ports or something but it happens with different wifi APs and more importantly my boyfriend's phone, connected to the same access point, loads everything without a problem.
Let's sum up:
Some apps can't access the network using wifi but work fine when using 3G.
It happens regardless of the wifi AP (tried 4 different ones with different routers) and another phone using the same app connected to the same wifi AP can access the network just fine.
If I initiate the connection using 3G then switch to wifi (typically I launch the app with 3G, switch wifi on without closing the app), it still works after that (RTE DocOnOne has no pb streaming the documentaries once it has launched)
My phone is a Motorola Defy, French retail ROM, not rooted, no motoblur account (skipped the configuration), Froyo 2.2.2 (already on the phone when I got it), system version (if that means anything to you) Version.34.164.3.MB525.Retail.en.FR, kernel 2.6.32.9-g050ccf2, build 3.4.2-164
I can't give as much details about my boyfriend's phone (that doesn't have the problem) because he's not here right now but I can tell you that it is a Motorola Defy too, French retail (I think) ROM, Froyo updated from preinstalled Eclair (using the official Motorola update), not rooted, with a motoblur account
I have no idea if that's relevant or not, but my phone has the "google maps 5.7.0 crashes on Defy" issue (18446 in the android issue tracker) and my boyfriend's phone hasn't.
Has anyone encountered this issue before ? I couldn't find anything on this forum or with a google search.
Is there any tool I can use to try and find the cause of the problem ?
Thank you for reading all this, sorry if my message was long but I wanted to give as much detail as possible to help the nice people who may find what is wrong with my phone
I didn't read all..
but if your phone don't have problems then check this:
1. go to settings
2. Select "Location & security settings"
3. enable this "Use wireless networks" Location determined by WiFi and/or mobile networks
4. test does it work...
Hello manumanfred,
I did what you suggested (actually it was already checked) and the problem is still there (tried unchecking it too).
I am not sure why you suggested it, was that related to some phones having wifi problems in some countries ? I read a thread about that when I was researching my problem but it is different. In my case, wifi works most of the time, but some requests always time out.
Thanks for trying
Anyone else has an idea of something I could try ?

[Q] Random mobile data connection drop problem with S4

Hi there,
First of all, I ran an extensive search over google and also on XDA forums before posting this.
My S4 (I9500) is experiencing random data connection drop problem for some time now. It starts with no data transfer (upload/download arrows not being active), then connection goes from H+ to H, then to 3G, then drops, back to H and continues until I turn off and on MOBILE DATA from toggle buttons. Then it works normal for some random time, then it happens again. Sometimes an hour, sometimes after 5 minutes.
I found this thread , however trying the workaround there by entering the provided code, I get "Connection problem or invalid MMI code". So that fix is not working either. I tried to go in service mode > debug screen > nas control and change revision to Release 5, but it says NOT SUPPORT. Haven't tried the other releases since I dont want to mess with it. I am also aware that the workaround in the above thread is for S2.
When this happens, it is just mobile data, there is no problem with network signal.
Has anyone else experienced something like that on their S4s?
The method you tried using is probably outdated and for a different phone.
Are you sure it isn't your provider?
Did you try another modem?

Nope.. I am working for a service provider company. Other people with iPhones in the same location as I am, are not experiencing the same thing. I heard similar problems with other S4 users, but they dont know any workaround either.
I tried both auto connect and WCDMA only options as well. Doesnt make a difference. My S4 doesnt support LTE, so I only have 3 options, third as GSM only, which I don't think it would be a solution.
Only temporarily solution so far, is turning mobile data off and on, which lasts from 5 minutes to 1-2 hours.
Btw my android version is 4.4.2
