Hi MaxETHAN,
I'm new here but I've tried a few media players myself recently. Not sure where you are but I've bought two locally and looking at trying a 3rd this weekend.
The first one I bought was from Vision on sale for $69 (currently on sale) called the KT-609. It's an unknown Japanese company that makes it with no site to get data from. At first it had some bugs but I think I caused those myself. LOL. It's only a 1GB memory and 8GB nand. I installed the most updated Kodi apk file on it, not from the Google Playstore, but from the Kodi site itself. I haven't had a problem with it in forever and now use it in my bedroom as a streaming source. Not that my couch isn't awesome to fall asleep watching the big game on, it's more or less sleeping in cause of no alarm clock to wake me up and make me late for work. Oooops. LOL. I've tried apps on it and it works well. I've added a wireless keyboard and mouse and it worked perfectly.
I just recently purchased the Minix Neo U1. I heard so many amazing things about this box. The first thing I did was upgraded the firmware. That was my first mistake. I should of researched it first as some have reported bugs. I've had a lot of problems with Kodi and XMBC crashing a LOT. I mean 20 plus times each! Plus when poking around to see it's options, it freezes up. Even just checking out the apps section it crashes. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the firmware update but... eh. I'm going to keep playing with it this weekend to see if I can keep the box stable. Right now, I'm not a fan of this box. But that's not to say I will change my mind if I can fix the issues. Sorry to be so wishy washy on this box but..... OH, I added that same wireless mouse and keyboard to it and it froze a lot too. Had to keep unplugging it to reset it.
The third box I'm getting this weekend to try out is the Seiki Media Streaming Box at Canadian Tire. I know NOTHING about this box and even posted here if anyone has any info on it. From the stats I've read on the CT site, it looks smokin good! Plus return features are a HUGE bonus. Like 1 year exchange warranty, if the box dies or has problems 8 months in, you go get a new one. No hassle.
Sorry I couldn't be more help but another option is if you have a laptop with an HDMI output. I've used FreeTelly on my laptop and hooked it up to TVs at friends places who refuse to get an Android box. FreeTelly is basically a special version of Kodi with all the bells and whistles already done for you.
Good luck and please let me and the rest here know what you decided to get and of course, give a review so we can all help each other.
G'day guys!
Has anyone read any reseach or articles regarding AMLogic and RockChip-based Android device differences (i.e. benefits and limitations)?? Apart from the same obvious information repeated and regurgitated thousands of times of other sites (hexa core, big little, blah), what are the real-world benefits / disadvantages of RockChip RK33xx devices?
For example, I just learned that RockChip (even RK3399 / RK3368) does not support HDR?
So I felt a topic should be created, to identify a clear and concise answer so it can be added to the topic FAQ or some Topic sticky.
So I hope an RK veteran could answer some questions, or atleast point to a relatively recent article, already covering this information on a deep-ish level:
What does not having 'HDR' support mean for a media centre device? What can't I do?
Where will not having 'HDR' affect/restrict my use of a multimedia TV box?
When is it best to avoid RockChip and return to AMLogic devices?
How can I plan to avoid experiencing issues with this lack of HDR support?
Thanks for your time and Cheers! :good:
There are so many items for sale on eBay that state they support "HDR", "HDR10", ...
What the hell!!! Maybe it was just RK32xx devices, as there are too many if this sh!tty old reviews around!
Looking at the devices with a minimum spec of:
? 3+ USB 2.0, 3.0 & OTG Ports (Optional: USB-C/Type-C, USB 3.1).
? HDMI 2.0 4K UHD 60fps HDCP 2.2 Video/Audio.
? AV Port - AKA 3.5mmm Audio & CVBS Video/Audio (red, white, yellow RCA's).
? SPDIF/TosLink/Fibre HD Audio.
? Gigabit LAN Ethernet.
? Wi-Fi B/G/N/AC & Bluetooth (BT) 4.0-4.1.
? TF Adapter - AKA a Micro SD Card Slot (Trans-Flash Memory).
DDR3 RK3399 models:
* CloudNetgo CR19 at $199 AUD (4GB DDR3, 4x USB (Type-C), BT 4.0, e-SATA, 3.5mm MIC, 3.5mm Headphones, External antenna, ...)
* R-TV X99 -or- K99 Max at $170 AUD (4GB LPDDR3, 3x USB (Type-C), BT 4.1, ...)
* H96 Max at $189 AUD (4GB LPDDR3, 3x USB (Type-C), BT 4.0, ...)
Then DDR4 S912 models:
* Beelink GT1 at $100 AUD (3GB DDR4, 3x USB, BT 4., ...)
* R-TV S10 at $100 AUD (3GB DDR4, 4x USB, BT 4.1, ...)
* Tanix TX8 Max at $100 AUD (3GB DDR4, 2x USB, BT 4.0, ...)
Have I missed any other models with RK3399 Hexa-core (6 core) CPU and 4GB DDR3 or 3GB DDR4?
just one

I'd love to upgrade one Monitor to 144Hz refresh, but that's just not affordable and also, I think I'm in good shape with the RAM I have now but I'm open to ideas and suggestions.
One thing about monitors. I have 2 60Hz 3840x2160 4K Monitors. Every 144Hz I look at has a res of 2560x1440. Why would a higher refresh rate only be found on lower resolution monitors and what will the visual difference be?
@HipKat from my assumption, your setup isn't for gaming, right? Or why do you want 144Hz?

It's for everything,. Gamin is a big part of that as is Adobe Graphics programs, streaming, etc.
Looking at prices and the time of year, I'm going to work on the Monitors first

OK, you can see a difference in FPS games where usual 60Hz are not enought and you're facing tearing when you move or turn around very fast, but this might be wanted(some games have options for blurring, tearing, DOF).
So if you don't play FPS and need 144Hz, you can skip this option in my opinion. I played also with low end 8ms LCD's long time ago in times where 144 or even 60Hz monitors are not invented
I'm curious why you are upgrading to an RTX 2060? For that price you can get an RTX 3070 if you are patient.

Price was the number one reason, but I've got some gamer friends who tell me the 20 series is pretty underwhelming. Right now, I'm standing pat until after the year ends to see where things are with GPU prices and chip availability.
A new primary Monitor is at the top of the list
Finally found a video comparing these two. Kudos to Chigz Review for bringing it up.

How is the battery life on X5 vs. X5 Pro?
X5 seems to be a steal with these specs. Still flagship level but mid-class pricing
