Anyone edit their build.prop for wifi tethering on unlimited? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Still waiting for my 6P that's in transit. I'm on Verizon with unlimited data. Has anyone successfully edited their build.prop to allow native wifi tethering?

Works fine for me with no changes.

Ghost, are you on unlimited data?

It works fine for unlimited data

Yep

Has anyone gotten it to work on AT&T? I can tether just find on my old nexus 5 but can't on the 6p.

In another thread someone posted good old FoxFi works. Said he was stock, no build prop edit, and installed FoxFi from Play Store. I don't have phone yet to confirm.
Anybody else got it workin'?

Just tried foxfi/pdanet still doesn't work. =(

I'm stock with no build prop edit on tmo. FoxFi works for me.
Edit: I do not have the unlimited plan

Foxfi is not working on my 6p with T-Mobile's UDP. stck, not rooted, no build.prop edits

Ok thank.
Anyone on Verizon grandfathered UDP (specifically) have FoxFi working on 6P?

Straight out of the box wifi tethering with VZW unlimited works? Sweet.

1. Add the following in the type category of APN: dun
2. Add the following to the end of build.prop: net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
3. In adb shell, run the following: settings put global tether_dun_required 0
4. Reboot
The third step replaces the old SQLite edit.

Have FoxFi working without signup prompt or whatever.

you should preface this by saying you need root. Many users are on this developers forum now who choose not to unlock developers option (i still dont see why they are on a developers forum if they choose not to mod. there are dozens of other android forums for non-modders)

An earlier poster said it worked out of the box. I'm actually hopi g not to mod it. I read the developers forum to find out what mods are out there and if they are necessary for my needs. Carrier phones? Absolutely I need to mod... But this latest Nexus may satisfy my needs without mods.

This work with Sprint? also do i need to root or unlock the phone somehow? i really dont want to root right away just for tethering, may be later.

I apologize, I should have explained better. A user needs root to temp boot into twrp and do any changes to system files.
Users are reporting tethering works on Verizon out of the box. while others on Verizon with UDPs say no.
It doesn't work for me at all on T-Mobile because I have a grandfathered UDP with no tethering allotment. I believe it doesn't work for aT&T users with zero allotment in their plans.

Has anyone tried Portable WiFi Hotspot?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kr.core.technology.wifi.hotspot
That's what I use on my Oneplus One with AT&T grandfathered unlimited.
I'm hoping it will work with the 6P coming soon.

To those with T-Mobile saying it works, that's because all their new plans include some amount of tethering.

Lollipop Hotspot, no root or flashing needed

The only think you need ahead of time is your MSL. This isn't too hard to get from Sprint customer service. I got mine via an app called MSL Utility, which it seems now crashes every time I try to use it on Lollipop.
The steps:
Go to Dialer and enter ##DATA# (##3282#)
Press "Edit" then enter your MSL.
Click on APN Settings
For both "APN2 EHRPD internet" and "APN2 LTE internet" change APN Type from "default, mms" to "default, mms, dun"
After you enter the change, hit Menu -> Save before going to the next APN.
And that's it. That easy. It works for both Hotspot and USB tethering. Seems too easy, but that's all I had to do.

There's been some concerns that this wouldn't work with the OE1 updated that's started rolling out. I can tell you that it works just fine. Feel free to click that update button!
UPDATE 8/03/2015

THANKS A LOT! one of the main reasons I wanted root!!
Work just perfect, now my question is, does sprint can detect when im using hotspot service this way?
Dont know
They probably know... i have used it since gs3 then note 3 and now note 4 doubt they really care too much about it
There is another ota coming in alril after the s6 drops i have a friend whos a manager for sprint in boston mass
When you do an prl update itll need to be re-inserted.
i called sprint the other day over slow LTE issue. I was on the phone with a tech who eventually had me do ##72786#. after this session i was unable to obtain hotspot through galaxy tools using method 1 or 2. Prior i had no issue.
I didnt have my MSL and had deleted my last NK2 backup so had to go through the whole process of reverting to NK2 and back to my backed up OB7.
My OB7 backup was prior to the sprint session and so hotspot is working fine. Any ideas of what sprint pushed to my device?

You should caveat that your mod needs Root since this is a post about a way to hack it without root. I haven't rooted my phone yet and frankly the hotspot issue was the only thing I missed that and call record. Probably wait till my warranty is out before I root.

Youre right. Sorry i realize now that this thread was intended for non root users. Ignore my previous post unless you decide to root your phone.

How to root the T-Mobile Note 7 using the sprint leaked firmware.

Here's how you do it: Follow the EXACT SAME GUIDE FROM THE SPRINT NOTE 7 SECTION!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-note-7/how-to/root-super-leaky-bros-sprint-galaxy-t3447202
To get LTE to work again just add the T-Mobile APN (not that hard).
Also, you might want to freeze all the "Sprint OMADM" packages with titanium backup once you're rooted (will cause less of a hassle everytime you boot. I understand the devs in the "all things root" thread are holding this from you because they want to fix wifi calling but I think giving you root at all will tie you over for now. Also, I'm having problems downloading the gear VR apps with this so it's related to following this tutorial.
Thank you so much to the developers who made this possible for the Sprint note 7 and for everyone who brought this to the other variants (the T-Mobile note 7 was the easiest imo). It's a little funny to think that this whole time it was this easy and we could've been rooted all along. *If you really need the T-Mobile firmware rooted so you can enjoy wifi calling I've been working on something for a few hours but it's not ready.*

If you're wondering why the model number ends with a "P" is because it's sprint firmware, silly. Your model number will appear as that. In the video you can see I am on T-Mobile. Yes, I do have a T-Mobile note 7. You can find some of my posts of me waiting for my note 7 in Charlie's waiting room thread.

Uh, this is from freeza? It's his thread that you are following but for the sprint note 7. It turns out it flashes perfectly on the T-Mobile note 7 with no problems and you can add the T-Mobile APN to fix LTE (that's what worked for me).
He leaked the firmware, we're toying with his work (well I barely did anything as you didn't need to do much different for the T-Mobile variant). But yes, I can see why you'd wait for the official ONLY if it is based off of T-Mobile firmware.

It's fine, it's root. Better than nothing. You can always use a Google voice number for the meantime if you really want to. We can always make a T-Mobile flashable ROM and flash it with FlashFire.

You need to make a folder called "sun7". Then extract all the contents of the zip you download into that folder. Wherever ADB is installed that folder needs to be in the same directory. Or if ADB is not in the same location provide the path.
Example: adb.exe push C:\pathtofilehere /directory/guide/tellsyouto/pushfoldercontentsto

Heres a Working Method to Unlock Wi-Fi Hotspot J700P

Download this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.shortcutmaster.lite
Run it. Click search.. Type Apn in search bar, go to apn setting click open, click on youre apn settings activity, go to the internet apn and click it, go to apn type and type dun in the edit apn section at the end of it and erase nothing just add dun, click save and youre hotspot will be unlocked. Tested on my boost mobile j7 running a internet connection to my galaxy j7 prime.
Greyed out for me, I cannot edit without (presumably) my MSL which Boost won't give me. Going to try with the newest update that just rolled out, will report back if successful.
Thats odd cause on my boost mobile it goes right to the apn and i have the newest update.
Works on my boost mobile j7
Are you rooted?
So I found a working method to get MSL. Must be rooted. In terminal or adb shell:
su
am start com.sec.hiddenmenu/.Program_Edit
Bottom entry is your MSL!
Boost Mobile comes with Hotspot on all their plans. Unless you found a way to bypass their 8GB of Free hotspot on the Unlimited Plan for 50$...
Unless you found one for Virgin... this is rather ineffective.
This will work for Virgin. I have different method for adding "dun" to apns, but Aftet adding to apn I have had hotspot working for months.

VZW: Tethering available? Require Hotspot subscription?

Hi All,
I'm very interested in the Moto G5 Plus, and I see that it already has Unlock Bootloader and Rooting threads, but I am looking to see whether or not tethering is a thing on Verizon G5 Plus. I would like to use my data plan but not have to pay extra for the hotspot.... they already gouge us on the price of the data plans...
It tied to your sim. So they will know you are using tethering.

This is true, but in the past and even with the Moto Z Play Edition they had tethering enabled out of the box without the need for a separate hotspot data plan... That's more towards what I'm looking for in this phone.
its a combo of what services are tied to your sim, and what the phone supports.
you can root and enable it if you don't get it out of the box.

I have not seen any root method on here for the US version. I believe the current root is for an Indian variant, I believe the XT1686. If I am wrong on this can you point me to a root method tutorial for the US XT1687. We just got this phone for my sister but I was holding off on rooting until a solid method was available with a non beta TWRP recovery built. Again if I am mistaken on this please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

I'm quite positive this phone will support tethering without the provision you mention since this is not running Verizon branded firmware. Much the same as some of the older Verizon branded phones that could run a aftermarket ROM, which totally bypassed the provisioning flag that Verizon put in place. Furthermore if you are already on one of Verizon's newer rate plans, then tethering is supported by pretty much every phone they have without provisioning. I'll have my sister give tethering a shot and report back the results.

As far as root goes, that post is made by a guy in Brazil and the links he provides are for videos by a guy in India. The US variant is different than the international versions. I wouldn't feel comfortable using that root method and messing something up since there has not been a recovery image released yet. Once you unlock and attempt to root, if it fails and you have no recovery image, you are hosed. I prefer not to soft brick my phone and make it unusable until someone provides a valid root method with recovery images. I personally own a Moto X Pure that is unlocked and rooted, but it is well documented unlike this brand new device.

I agree, I'm in no rush at all, as I appreciate all the effort the Developers put into these devices. Most of it on their own time. I was just giving solid advice for rooting a device if you are a non developer like me. I can't afford to force the issue and mess up my phone with no way to restore it. I am glad to wait for a US version root method with a restore option. Hopefully that will be soon , if we are lucky.

I followed that root method on my US g5 plus and it worked fine. It's a solid method you just have to follow the instructions to a "T".
That's good to here but there still isn't any recovery files if something goes wrong. You rolled the dice and came out a winner, might not be the same for someone else. I'll wait until recovery images are available, especially since the phone isn't my own.

I have the EU/Intl version fully unlocked. I can tether with the hotspot using my tether allowance.
If I root my device and edit my build.prop as you've stated what exactly does this do?
Does it mean I can use the inbuilt hotspot/tethering function but instead of using my tether allowance it uses my mobile data?
Changing the build.prop allows you to tether if your verizon plan doesn't include tethering without a separate charge. Newer verizon plans have tethering included as part of your data (ie use it how you like)

How to activate the hotspot on LG G5 VS987 Verizon, without sim Verizon

Hello guys, I have found a way to make the hostpot work on our LG G5 verizon, of course without needing a verizon sim, I accidentally found it and I share it with you, here the steps are very simple:
1. The first thing to do is download the app ES Explorer (from the play store or the apk I will put the link at the end of the post).
2. Open it (skip the initial configuration, it is not important) and go to the option of sender.
3. Touch the RECIVE option, then our device will force to create a hostpot.
4. Now we can close the app and enter settings and configure our hostpot freely :fingers-crossed:.
I hope this form works for you to make it work.

No, I'm in nougat too, when you give the option to receive in ES explorer, it says: current network: G5_xxxx? (The X may vary depending on the device)
no it keeps telling me my sim card isnt verizon and ended up with nothing. I do the same method using ShareIt apps as I think it do the same way in creating hotspot for file sharing but still can't, and now I think I can't do files sharing via hotspot network at all which is the best way to transfer files. and also, could not tether a hotspot to my laptop...

I do the same method using ShareIt apps as I think it do the same way in creating hotspot for file sharing but still can't, and now I think I can't do files sharing via hotspot network at all which is the best way to transfer files. and also, could not tether a hotspot to my laptop...

But in the phones that I tested all have nougat installed, with the latest updates of April 2017.
Yeah, mine just pops up: "Tethering; Data network connection is not available. Mobile Hotspot/USB tethering service needs Verizon data network in order to work" when trying to do that. Non-root phone.

I am very happy to know this way to activate the hostpost you found it worked, I thought that no one else would work , after trying on 4 different devices and worked perfectly but apparently to those who try the method that leaves here you have not had luck. I hope it continues to be useful to other users.

What a good news then! I just followed the steps here after updated so I thought the tutorial made it worked, but if it's enabled by the default it's great!
