Hello everyone, hope you are enjoying your new nexuses. Mine has an issue tho. It does not recognize OK Google hotword until I say it directly into mic on the bottom. Video mic works perfectly well
Don't know what the resolution is, just wanted to chime in and say I have a similar issue. It seems to need very close dictation to activate. Also, Ok google stops working completely sometimes and the device needs to be restarted to get it working...
I also have this issue where I have to hold the phone close and it has to be on the home screen

you have to enable always listening in the google now settings.
Have same issue here when screen is off, have to yell or give multiple tries. I guess this is due to the doze that tries to save power.
Mama google just wants you to stop mumbling and enunciate your words! Oh and sit up straight dammit.

Are you using any launcher?
I know with Nova Launcher, I had to turn off Google's NOW ON TAP, for "OK Google" to work.
NOT is a work in progress & it was trying to search the Nova Launcher.
Working fine here and from arms length with screen off face flat down on a table/mousemat.

Heyy,
So I'm using Google Now Launcher with Danvdh's GPE rom and it's great! However got a problem I can't work out..
From the home screen, most of the time "Ok Google" works at normal volume at arms length, but at some point during the day the sensitivity drops drastically, and I'll have to start shouting at my phone, and that looks weird.
You can just reboot, so it's not a big problem, but big enough to annoy a perfectionist like me! Any ideas?
After testing the note 4 nexus 6 and s5 prime, i have come to the conclusion that the always on feature of the note 4 is not always on.
With the google search bar widget floating on the homescreen with the screen on the note 4 would pick up the okay google command 100% of the time.
Now with the screen off or locked, it would pick up the command 100% of the time at times, 0% sometimes( doing this test makes me feel retarded). This leads me to believe that when it doesnt respond, the mic simply isnt listening, an s voice issue. And that the google floating widget uses a completely separate routine for its listening.
Anyone have any inputs on this? Will lollipop fix it? Or is it something that cannot be fixed?
It works for me - on, off, locked or not.
It does for me. Just not consistently.

Im having the same issue. Ive just got my self a wear watch and configured now to take instructions. Also like being able to wake my note 4 by shouting at it.
I think its when it goes in to deep sleep... still testing...
I always felt like there was a conflict between Svoice and Google Now so I usually uninstall or disable Svoice (cos i prefer GN) but i read somewhere the always listening only works with Google Now Launcher. What launcher are you using? But anyway, Svoice should work with TW, otherwise Samsung are selling defective phones!
Im on the google launcher.
I dont think its a deep sleep issue since it fails to register ok google sometimes even when the screen is on.
E.g. in an app, lock screen and screen off.
however it never fails in any screen with a google now microphone. E.g. maps, google now or any homescreen with the google now search bar widget.
It's because it keeps Un ticking listen all the time in Google now as soon as I set s voice. As stated earlier, I think only one can be the always listening and now doesn't do screen off.
I have got round it by setting tasker profiles to open now when svoice is open.
So I can shout galaxy to wake it, ok google then instruct it to do a billion other tasks I have set through commandr. This set till slows me to use Google now with my LG round. All round it's working pretty good, exept it not waking from time to time...
I use nova launcher (has enable ok google for nova in settings)
But unfortunately have failed to get all other non Google apps to work with ok google, the 3rd party ok google x posed module breaks commandr.
Hope this helps some one.
Looking forward to fixing this "not listening" from time to time.
Everyone still having the same issue? I am still no solution, can't identify the problem or what's causing it either...
Same issue here. Works 100% from home screen or Google search/now. Very unreliable everywhere else

After making S-Voice a Phone Admin, the problem appears to have been solved - for myself at least. S-Voice still has some issues recognizing my voice if I'm in a particularly loud area, but I can always count on it otherwise.
Just a suggestion (for those who haven't tried yet): Try to record your wake-up command in different ways to help its accuracy (kind of like how you did your fingerprint). Oh and be as relaxed and natural as possible :good:
Can you elaborate on making s voice a phone admin please?

I assume he means in accessibility. I did this but still seemed to have the problem but will try again. I even left double home tap as s voice as I heard it makes it "always wait" to be pressed, and I assumed this would ensure it was running in the background.
Will let you know if it solves the issue for me.
I notice this while trying to put it on my desk or one hand typing texts, it seems the auto rotate sensitivity is too high. Does anyone else have this issue? Is there some way to "turn it down" so you can turn the phone more before it auto rotates? I know I can turn it off, but I use it in Chrome and YouTube and probably couple more apps.
Thanks!

No issues here with it , guess you could set to landscape / portrait manually , few apps can do it in the play store

I've considered manually doing it, guess just being lazy. It just wants to rotate way too soon for me, it may be my posture or something causing it. Not a bad idea, maybe I can find a widget to easy swap manually.
I've noticed it too. Although I'll take that over too much lag in it rotating when I want

No doubt about that!! For me it's right on the cusp of no issues. May just need to hold the phone slightly different to correct it.
I saw Xposed was released for 6.0. Does anyone know of anything for it that would allow this sort of adjustment?

I thought Android 6.0.1 will solve it... But it didn't
Is this a hardware issue? I think not. Sensors data look fine. So I do think it is a software issue. Hoping Google will sort this out
Reported the issue to google

Yeah, I think so, too. I turned off autorotation. I found I like the experience better.
I too find it too sensitive. I used Tasker to limit the rotating on all except a few apps on my last phone but I haven't done it on this phone. You just made me think of it. I can't say yet that it will work. Worth a try.
I do not want to manually set the rotation every time I want to watch a video or a picture I just taken. This is silly.
The auto rotation works great on iphones & on previous Nexus devices. The experience is important.
If only there was an app that can bias the tilt sensitivity like there are apps for brightness sensitivity

Thanks for this, I added a comment in it and voted as well. I turn the screen rotation off when needed (like for Chrome use). Always forget to turn it back on till it rotates without wanting it too.
here is a quick video I did to illustrate the issue:

I'm gonna start a thread in Help/Q&A and post a reddit article I found that solved the issue for me. Using the device with one hand it would always rotate when I reached for the far corner and was bugging the hell out of me... The solution involves Tasker.
The big deal breaker for me is Always on ok Google assistant.
Will the galaxy s8 (plus) have the 'okay Google' assistant capability when screen is OFF and phone is NOT charging? Like the nexus /pixel phones? As in the low power always on listening capability?

I believe this is possible with a 3rd party launcher such as Nova Launcher, but I could be mistaken.

That is a good question, I wonder that also... However maybe that is something Bixby will bridge the gap with (just speculating)
I feel like it would be possible through a third party app but it seems that nobody cares about that. There's this app called OpenMic+ that runs google now from the voice command, but stopped being supported and doesn't work with current versions of google now/assistant. I feel like someone could possibly make a tasker profile that triggered google assistant whenever the OpenMic+ popup appeared, but since I struggle a lot with tasker, I wasn't able to do it. This is a serious pain in the ass. I'd like to just ask google what time it is when I wake up, since my phone is far from reach and all, and that's a feature the iPhone 5 had back in 2012.
I have only seen "ok google" support for when the screen is off and not charging on nexus and pixel phones.
other phones at least need to be charging.
S8 seems to suck with the worst option that it can;t even do it with the screen off and charging, prob related to bixby.

My LG G6 works with "Ok Google" when the screen is off and no charger present. So it is definitely possible, at least with the Snapdragon variant (which contains the always listening co processor) of the S8. I believe it is something Samsung chooses to disable though for whatever reason.

I didn't mean it wasn't possible but for some reason most manufacturers didn't bother with implementing that function. even oneplus hasn't bothered to do it. I'm guessing samsung is using this to try give preference to bixby.
I don't need it to work with the screen off and not charging. I am ha[[y for it to work as long as the screen is on. But what is frustrating, it works but then randomly stop until the device has been rebooted, i don't need to retrain my voice so it's not and issue with that. I' don't use power saving mode and I have disabled app power monitor so I am confused what else is causing the service to stop.

I suspect this may be the real reason, although it still doesn't explain why people are being forced to restart to resume normal functionality.

ok
after doing some testing it looks like this issue isn't anything to do with bixby (i am using package disabler pro and bixby is disabled) or power saving. HUGE bug in the phone, it looks like once another app has used the microphone, whatsapp, phone, etc then "ok google" detection no longer works. i'm assuming once another app has used the microphone the service for "ok google" detection has stopped? or the service is no longer able to monitor the microphone anymore?
what i have done is rebooted the phone made sure "ok google" is working a few times to make sure. then used whatsapp to send a voice message, or call, or used the phone to make a call. then immediately try to use "ok google" again and it no longer works.
I am sure this is caused by another app using the microphone as the whole day today "ok google" worked fine right up until i made a call after work.
now i wonder if there will be a solution for this, it's going to be quite a big dealbreaker for me...
Hello everyone, I just came from a Nexus 6P, and was wondering if "ok google" from screen off is a feature on the OnePlus 5. I have swore I had it when I first got the phone but now it doesn't seem to be working. I've looked around a little and there seems to be a lot of disagreement about whether it's possible or not. Does anyone want to test it and post whether it works for them or not? (or used to work)

I never used stock OOS, only xXx and Pure Fusion, and "ok google" doesn't work on either while phone is locked (which, to my understanding, is not the same thing as "screen off")
I have been missing this ever since I got this phone and moved away from my Moto x Pure. It's really aggravating there is no way to get this to function correctly, or at all, with the screen off. I don't get it.

FYI: This was answered in a thread on Google Assistant.
1. "OK Google" will NOT work from the lock screen even when "Trusted voice" is enabled and the screen is off.
2. "OK Google" will unlock the lock screen when "Trusted voice" is enabled AND the screen is on.
3. "OK Google" will react if the screen is off but the lock screen is not on.
I hope that helps.
From what I read its speculated that with OOS it was chosen to save battery by turning off "listening" when the lock screen is on and the screen is off. Personally I think that OOS should be "listening" under those conditions if your also charging or at least have that option as a settings toggle.
I've personally had to hack a way around this issue by using a couple of apps (Caffeine, Screen Off (no lock)) to get into a #3 (above) condition when I'm attached to the charger so my OP5 can double as a Google Home and have my screen off most of the time without automatically locking.

I understand that this feature has been cut off as a measure to optimize battery life but
This thread is not on xda just to discuss what OEMs have restricted us to, right?
Besides there are many of us who would prefer this feature over an hour or two of battery life
I've also been doing some research
I've tried those apps that keep your display "Always on" after you press the power button, but that option wasn't very robust:
One extra press of the power button would turn off the app and thus the screen
Ok Google detection works well if the device was locked recently, not working at all after a few hours
Associated with an hour less of battery life
But the app made checking time and notifications a bit less tedious
Basically the AOD feature from recent Samsung devices
Let me know of any workarounds that involve least number of third party apps
BTW, I use trusted voice, and it works well, friends tried a lot to get through but never could , helps with the unlocking part of the above feature
TL;DR: It is very much possible!
I was were you guys were some weeks ago and also thought that it would be nice to have true hands-free capabilities, so I searched for an app that could do this. The main issue with the "OK Google"-detection, as @3DSammy already stated, is that the screen has to be on in order for it to work (and trusted voice has to be enabled, obviously). The best workaround for this is an app that keeps your screen turned on without draining the battery too much. For this purpose I downloaded an app called "Always On AMOLED - BETA" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomer.alwayson&hl=en), which enables an always-on display, as the name suggests. The app itself works really well with few bugs and doesn't drain the battery too much, although it is noticeable. It will automatically start once you lock your device and is customizable to your liking. While it is running, you can use "OK Google" at any time when it's outside your pocket (and the always-on display is on), just make sure to disable aggressive doze and enable auto-start for the app to prevent it from getting choked off by the OS. Root access may also help. When pressing the power button the app will close and open your lockscreen as you would expect, and the fingerprint sensor does also work straight from the a-o display, which can't be said for every app out there. The sensor is a bit slower though...
Hope I could help!
It's possible to set up for when locked in Settings > Security > Smart Lock, but I'm not sure if you can do it when it's OFF.

maybe try contacting the dev of the app for that? It's been some time since I used this setup myself
