Marshmallow, SD Cards, Internal Storage. - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK i know i am jumping the gun a bit here but given you can use your SD card as the internal storage in Marshmallow I was wondering what are the implications of this.
I am using a 64GB Sandisk Ultra in my MXP and it can only muster 50MB reads and 12MB writes. So considerably slower than the internal memory. I'm just wondering if setting the SD card to be the internal memory will make the phone feel like it is wading though mud. I'm going to get a UHS-3 card to see if faster speeds are possible but i've a feeling the MXP cant make full use of the really fast cards.
I am excited at the possibility of my 16GB phone being released of its lower capacity but slightly worried its really going to bog it down.

I have one 64GB, kingston UHS-I U3 and the results from mxp are:
54,2. MB/s read
34,54 MB/s write

Still not up to the internal storage speed but the 34.54MB write is very good to know indeed, ill deffo get a U3 card now.

Now I am on Android 6.0 and the write speed is 10 MB/S with the same card. Anyone more? :'(
I format it and speeds are the same. Write: 10 MB/S - Read: 30MB/S

I have a SanDisk Extreme Pro U3 64gb and running Android 6. I have elected to use adaptive storage and did a memory test. I got a read 26.6MB/s and write of 51.5 MB/s using A1 SD Bench.
I haven't noticed any particular slowdowns as such. All seems to run fine. Apps are using both internal and sd card. Before I upgraded I nearly ran out of storage on phone. Now got Marshmallow storage runs about 5gigs used of available space and rest is put on sd card with no interaction from me. Seems to be working very well.

I should have said this is on a Moto X Play of course!

In A1 SD Bench I have "Cached read" I dont know why.
My results now are:
Write: 10.44 MB/S (On first days... 34.54)
Read: 48.21 MB/S (On first days... 54.2)
Thx

Ignore the cached read results they aren't accurate of the cards performance.

Ok, cached read is used for quick test in a1 sd bench.
Thx!

yeah it will give you an idea but ultimately it wont be accurate as a proper test.

Does anyone have tested it with UHS-1

Speed difference while working with SDHC Class 2,4 or 6?

Hey folks,
is there any Speed difference between a Micro SDHC Card with Class 2,4 or 6 while working with the HD2? For example loading big files like Navigation Software.
Copying things onto the Card is for sure much faster, but while copying i've time to wait. Intressting to me is just the speed difference while working with the phone.

I've got a class 2 16GB SanDisk card in mine, and if a class 4 or class 6 make operation time any quicker, then I seriously doubt that you'd notice it. I've not tried any other classes, so can't compare, but I can definitely say that a speed improvement is not required.
allright
a 16gig class 2 is ordered!
Depends on the storage size. With most 16GB cards, there's almost no difference between class 2,4,6.
The less the storage size, the greater the difference between the classes.
However, I recommend a quick test to make sure the data rates are acceptable, before you keep the card.
@johncmolyneux
what's your average speed with 16gig class2 (card in the HD2 and connected via USB)?
Would be great if you could make some Benchmarks with HDTune or HD2testw!
A friend of mine got an PNY Premium 16gig Class2 Card and he got:
~3MB/s Write
~8MB/s Read
(hd2testw)
i hope its the card that is limiting and not the HD2, because these values are bullsh*t!

Reading, I got 8.3MB/s, but couldn't try a write test as it wanted to remove the partition on the card. I then tried the same test with the 8GB Transcend card (class 6) that was in my HD, and I got around 50MB/s read on that.
It was definitely a noticable difference doing that test, but not a noticable difference when using the device.
Incidentally, I couldn't find a single thing about hd2testw. Do you have any links?
what? 50MB/s Read. thats stunning!
is the 16gig Card a SanDisk or also one of the "cheaper" producers?
Try ATTO Benchmark.
I'm now going to cancel the ordered card and get the SanDisk 16gig from amazon. Reviewers on amazon talking about 10MB/s write and up to 20MB/s read. Hopefully the HD2 can make same results!
These are both using ATTO Benchmark (8MB chunks, 256MB size).
16GB card is a SanDisk, class 2.
Write : 4 MB/s
Read : 8.6 MB/s
8GB is a Transcend, class 6.
Write : 6 MB/s
Read : 7.4 MB/s
I trust neither of the apps that I've used for these tests, as the results don't make any sense.

No offence, but I would be inclined to suspect your benchmarking software if it's claiming 50MB/s. That sort of speed suggests that all the reading and writing is actually being done to or from an in-RAM cache rather than the card itself.

[Q] Question about microsdhc

I've got a while ago a Samsung 32gb PLUS microsdhc class 10 UHS-1...blah blah blah
I didn't pay attention to speeds before, but i was reading something about last night, and i checked on mine.
This card is advertised to reach up to 48mbps (read)
I tested on my s4 and the results was:
SD Tools:
Writing speed: 12.2 mb/s
Read speed: 19.7 mb/s
A1 SD Bench:
Writing speed: 14.60 mb/s
Read speed: 18.60 mb/s
My question is to someone who knows a bit about those memory cards and have some experience with them..
Did i get a fake one? Or the speeds above are normally for this type of card?
Anyone?
I think our phones can't handle more than 20MB write and read speed but on the computer, it may be faster. If you want to check if your microSD card is genuine then use H2TestW on your computer to test the card

Oh yes our phones has much higher reading/writing speeds.
For an example:
Internal phone card:
read: 81.42 mbps
write: 33.33 mbps
This is a quick test on A1 SD Bench.
So i would like to know from someone who knows better those cards if is normal.
I know that fake ones will not get writing speeds over 10mbps anyway, but i want to be sure.
Thanks

There is at least one similar thread.
Your speeds are the same as everyone else's. Don't worry, your card is ok.
Is the phone that is not able to use the full speed that the card can achieve.

Does Shield TV has UHS-II reader?

I search around website but couldn't find the specific specs for the micro sd card reader for Shield TV. Does it support UHS-II? I am planning to purchase the Lexar 1800x and want to make sure if I can take full advantage of that card which support read speed up to 300MB/S. I'm also wondering about the writing and reading speed of original storage on 16GB version.
Nvm I contacted Nvidia support, only support UHS-I class 3.

I assume all the card reader of UHS-1 class3 should have same limit...based on the wiki the limit for that is 104 MByte/s.
I did some further research and seems like random writing and reading speed is actually more important than sequence speed. However, the review on amazon shows Samsung pro plus is best on both random and sequence speed so I guess I will just go with that for now. Laxer is actually only good at reading speed.

thats a pretty misleading article, there compairing a 128gb evo plus to other various sized cards. from what ive seen (so far) all premium 128gb cards have relatively low write speeds vs their smaller counterparts.
lexar's generally have the best sequential read/write speed, samsung's usually are better with random read/write, and sandisk is definitely solid too.
for example
lexar 64gb 633x sequential read/write 93.36 / 48.09 MB/s
lexar 128gb 633x sequential read/write 73.17 / 22.16 MB/s
results are basically the same for other manufacturers.

Definitely a fast card read/write was a bit faster than 80/40 MB/s iirc.
I haven't ran any legit benchmarks on shield yet, but regardless of the sd card i haven't really seen write speeds over 12-15 MB/s while transferring from internal to sd with file managers, ES specifically.
So im thinking internal storage isn't particularly fast, just like on the shield tablet. If i get bored I'll run some tests and see what I come up with
I haven't found a device that's not a camera that support this format yet.
^^ yeah pretty much. even if they call it out. real world speeds dont seem to get there. outside of HD cameras
The microsd reader is UHS-I so you will spend money for nothing. No matter how fast the external storage is you still depend on the speed of the internal storage which is gong to be the bottleneck when you run the OS and apps. 4K video needs 25Mbps and UHS-I can deliver easily. Same story if you read from USB 3 ports. I don't know the speed of the internal storage but it should be at the commercial level of the beginning of 2015.

What's your read/write speed with the pro plus? I got the same, I get 60~ r/w.
I ordered 500gb version...I did get the card for my phone lol but like 40s speed sad

SD Card is So Freaking Slow!

I have a PNY U3 Turbo Performance 64GB High Speed MicroSDXC Class 10 UHS-I, up to 90MB/sec Flash Card. It seems to get slower with time. I mean it is literally taking me like 60 seconds to delete a few pictures. The card is formatted to portable storage. I only store music and photos on it. Reformatting offered no improvement. It is borderline unusable.
So, I benchmarked and found that my read speed is about 59 mb per sec and my write speed is 4.4 mb per sec. I can live with the read speed but the write speed is horrible. What gives?
How many pictures are you talking about, and how large are they?
128KB clusters?
I found trying to use 4K clusters in exfat was resulting in the same slowness. Reformatted to 128KB clusters and it flys (~20MB/s write ~70MB/read). Sandisk ultra plus 64GB.
I have this issue as well I have one of the fast Samsung cards. First few months worked great super fast but now takes a while to carry over a gig of pics and music. I also notice lag in loading and delteing photos through the phone
These are normal pics 5-6 MB. There has to be something wrong.

If you find any info/solution let us know.
Im thinking about running it through one of the tests that show the read/write speed, if its not up to par on that I will contact samsung see if its covered under their warranty.
Why not opt for a 128GB sd card? My Moto X Pure will be here Thursday. I have a 64GB in my old phone but I may get 128.

Yes, I have tried this a few times and it did not help. The write speed of this particular card is somewhere between 5 and 9 mb/sec. I have used multiple benchmarking tools that all confirm the same thing. The sad thing, if you drill down into the specifications for a lot of these new sd cards there is no mention of write- speeds. I asked a question similar to my OP on Reddit and had somebody with the same card echo my issue. Terrible write speeds. I am not in the mood to buy another card with great specs only to find it performs poorly in my phone? There is still a part of me that thinks it's hardware or software related and specific to the phone. I can't quite believe that something advertised as "turbo", UHS-1, Class 10, and 90 mb/sec has an actual write speed of 5 mb/sec. It seems criminal.
^^See my post #3. I've found this card to have very good write speeds on the phone of ~14-16 MB/s, reads around 40-50. On the pc through a usb 3 card reader I can write at the speeds posted above.
But yes, unless you drill down, the marketing and advertising doesn't list write speeds. I can see why. It all depends where you'll be using it. I'll be lucky to see sustained 10MB/s read through my dash cam (not sure what the write speed even is) even through the card is capable of 40MB/s +.
I should say, using the moto x, through MTP, I've seen read speeds upwards of 35-40MB/s, write speeds of about 7-10MB. The card is faster through twrp, backup stats indicate ~14-16MB/s.

Which SDcard?

Right I have a class 10 32gb card which I'm using as internal but any apps that are on it stutter and lag, if I buy another 32gb or 64gb like sandisk U3 will it be fast enough so that my apps don't lag?
What are the specs of the u3?
I was just about to put up my own post about this. I have a 64gb sandisk xtreme SD card. Only bought it a few weeks back for £35 I think it was. I'm having major problems. If I try deleting some stuff from the SD card using say es file explorer it takes a really long time to do it. Even deleting an empty folder it take wayyy too long. Also if I try downloading files straight to my SD card using say google drive or a torrent program it locks the phone up completely and I have to keep resetting the phone to get it to become responsive. Really annoying. If I get some spare time I will flash the stock xt1572 firmware and try it if not I will have to contact MOTO UK and try and sort it. But I'm hoping they will sort a replacement phone so I don't have to send off for repair....?

Just a note that the phone doesn't support the second row of pins for UHS-2 (U3), so you're limited to UHS-1. Of course, the card could still be fast enough to max out UHS-1, but maybe not.
You could also look at changing the I/O scheduler for the SD card in Kernel Adiutor to something more suitable for SD, and playing with the read-ahead buffer to get better performance. Noop/512kB is a good starting point.
Also, why are the apps on the SD card? Shouldn't they be on the phone? Maybe use the external storage for non-time intensive things, like photos/music?
UPDATE, speed results from Sandisk 200GB MicroSD:
Seq Read - 79.85MB/s
Seq Write - 3.87MB/s
Random Read - 5.37 MB/s, 1377 IOPS
Random Write - 0.37 MB/s, 97 IOPS
SQLite Insert - 1192 TPS
SQLite Update - 664 TPS
Not the fastest card, but good enough for mass storage
My general consensus is that the apps will always be better on internal storage. Even if the phone can make full use of the U3 specs, it is still slower memory. Expect issues, especially with some apps.
