Can't imagine a logical customer base for this.. Seems kinda ridiculous to offer a tablet so large without simply making it a laptop. A laptop size screen with the restrictions of a tablet? No thanks.
I'd like to hear other peoples opinions on this.. Maybe there is a use for it that I can't think of
Oh.. And FIRST. Jokes
First of all, it's not a response to the iPad Pro.
The only similarity is perhaps that both are fairly niche.
This is the sort of thing that might be used for presentations, exhibitions, or for a bedroom as part TV, part tablet/desktop (if used with a BT mouse/keyboard).
With news that Chrome OS is merging into Android, this thing may even become more useful in the future than anyone can think of right now.
Personally, I have no desire for one, but can see what Samsung is trying to do.
This is not trying to be a laptop, it is trying to be an entertainment device. So this is closer to a TV than a tablet. If you look at it, it is designed for watching Videos and other things like that. With that in mind, there is going to be some market for it, just do not know how big. There is a company, Nabi, that make a 20" and 24" "tablet", but they also are going for the entertainment device. They show some nice videos of people playing some nice multiplayer games, where it is laying on the table between them, sort of like the table that Microsoft was trying out a few years ago....
So, no this is not a response to the iPad pro... If anything, the iPad Pro is a response to the Samsung Note Pro 12" tablet. Samsung has done two lines of tables in the 12" area previously, maybe they will bring back the Note 12" if they want to compete with the iPad pro.
Thanks...
Samsung has history of introducing new type of devices like they did with the Note series or Galaxy Edge concept and many more. Apparently most of these are greatly successful. So we never know this could also gain popularity among users
Would be interesting thing if specs were better.
Now I will 100% sure miss this one, but if it got Snapdragon CPU, 3-4GB of RAM and hi-res display (really, 1920x1080??) situation might be totally different. And as a multimedia device this should relly come with AMOLED screen --> black would be black, no backlight bleeding.
Maby someday..

Which all makes sense with one glaringly obvious flaw in that idea.. It's touch screen only and does not have IR for use of a remote. How many people do you think are going to use this in business presentations when they have to tap the screen or use a wireless keyboard or mouse to change slides or pages? Can't imagine a scenario where this would be better to use than alternatives. But hey, it's Samsung.. People will buy it regardless of logic

There are other Bluetooth controllers, but I'll admit it would have made sense to include one (or offer one designed specifically for it).

True that, and it would make more sense to actually market it towards this type of person.. Rather than just lazy people that want a portable streaming device that would be too uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time. Hence the stand. I've taken my tablet all around the house and streamed things off of it (Netflix mostly) and never once went "hey, what if I bought an 18 inch tablet that weighed over 2kg and didn't offer the convenience of a normal size tablet?"
Here's an Australian article looking at the functionality of the Galaxy View.
Seems very much like something you might benefit from if you're living on your own and don't want a proper TV (proper TV sucks anyway in Australia, hence my usage of Netflix) but probably not so much in a regular size house hold
First i'd like to say, Samsung released the Galaxy note pro 12.2 almost a year ago, so if anything, Apple is responding to Samsung. I own the note pro 12,2, which has Samsungs S pen, that doesnt need to be charged. I can also split the screen into 4 seperate windows, as well as cascading more windows on top of those.
Anyway, I will be purchasing the Galaxy View. I have always wanted a large tablet, and at 18.4 inches, the View will be perfect. I use my tablet for web surfing, digital magazines, comics, and lots of Madden, as well as some writing. I have a Samsung bluetooth mouse and keyboard if I need to do a lot of typing.
As far as specs, the screen resolution doesnt bother me for what I use it for. I also have a 17 inch laptop which I rarely use. Its just something about a tablet thats just more convient for me.
For me, i'm a fan of innovation, and for me, Samsung does it for me.
Just my opinion.

Samsung did think of this... It has an app called "Galaxy View Remote" that can be found in the Samsung App Store... works via Bluetooth using your phone or tablet.

Hello!
I've had the Iconia for about three weeks now and have to say I'm very satisfied with the device. I went to the U.S. on late April for a business trip and decided to invest my hard earned money on a new tablet. I was able to side test the Iconia, Xoom, iPad 2 and was sold by the Acer for the following reasons:
- Full sized USB and microSD right out of the box;
- Speaker quality;
- Rotation lock switch;
- Battery life;
- Feels AWESOME in hands (very important factor to me. We all know the Iconia is heavier than the iPad, Galaxy, Transformer.. but those extra 100g are well distributed on its fantastic design);
- Fantastic design
Both Iconia and Xoom share very similar hardware specs, but the A500 user experience felt a lot smoother. Dunno if it's Android related, but I actually had to hard reset the Xoom in store. That was very disappointing.
I own an iPhone 4 since its launch, so I'm very used and kinda tired of iOS. It feels outdated. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone, it's a phenomenal piece of hardware, specially after jailbreaking, but I felt it was time to go for a more flexible solution for my tablet experience.
I never saw the Iconia as an expensive toy. Sure I can watch movies and Youtube videos with my girlfriend in bed or have many laughs with friends while messing with the "Nipple" app.. but I no longer feel enslaved to a chair and table when I need to browse the web, read emails, chat, online shopping, read, read, read, etc NO MATTER where I am. Yes, I have a laptop, but it's simply not the same thing. A funny example, the other day I was editing an important document on the laptop, when all the sudden I felt the urge to go to the bathroom.. it took me less than 10 seconds to save the document to a thumbdrive, go to the bathroom and resume my editing on Quickoffice. Comfy and priceless!
I also play drums and have been using the A500 quite a lot for sheet music reading, learning new songs, etc. Last week I was jamming with a couple of friends as we needed some lyrics.. I just handed the Iconia to the "singer" (we were kinda drunk, lol) and he had all lyrics opened in different browser tabs in a matter of seconds, ready to rock. Again, priceless! Here's the result (just for giggles):
I have only 2 minor issues that hopefully Acer will fix on the upcoming update:
- GPS not properly working (or not working at all, while the iPhone locks to the satellites almost instantly);
- Random wake/sleep bug.
At the end of the day, I think it's a matter of life quality and 450 bucks sounds like a very small investment for what I've gained so far using the Iconia. Definitely a keeper for its price and specs. Thumbs up, Acer!
I like mine a lot, I hope Acer fix GPS, in my X10 gps lock almost instantly without wifi or 3g, I miss that feature.
Love it, great stuff, it certainly does change how you access the net, read, music etc.
I love the music player and browser, also got the american google book app which looks fantastic and is real smooth, but cant add your own books so not much use...
I have been into computers for a long long time, and I can safely say that tablets are the first real game changer, even more so than laptops...
We are all blessed to have one of these devices (or any new tablet) to be able to enjoy and use in our lives.
Enjoy
I aslo agree, I love this new form of computing. I have a big, loud, and sometimes room warming gaming desktop. It feels great to not sanction myself off in the corner of the room to pay bills, reply to emails, and do basic things. All while not staring down my on my phones screen.
im buying it for sure!
thanks for the nice info.....
yeah I feel the same I use my Acer iconia A500 all day so far I'm very satisfied but just feel like we need more developer support like the Asus and xoom if you look at their forums they already have custom themes I want that but even if we don't get it oh well I still love my tablet the same
I enjoy the hell out of mine. I didn't buy it to be a supercomputer, if I wanted an Ipad2 I would have bought one. Plain and simple, the Iconia does what I bought it for, web browsing, music, video and a few games now and then. It came down to a choice between a new laptop or a tablet. I wanted the portability of the tablet and didn't want another device tethered to Itunes. I'm glad I bought mine and I also understand this tablet is still very early in its development and should mature well over time. Did I expect absolute perfection from day one, nope, but I'm glad I got what I did and I'm going to stick with it.
Love mine for many reasons, but this is #1

just to be fair with Acer, after the latest update, my 2 main issues (wake up bug and dead GPS), seem to be solved. Thanks for listening, Acer.

This is how I feel as well. You know they get it right when you can't see yourself without a certain piece of tech.
Can you live without a cell phone? Sure! Would you if you didn't have to? Doubtful.
This is the sentiment I hold for my A500. I will be the first to admit that it's not necessary. But boy is life better/more convenient, etc. with it around.
I won't complain about the price, though I suspect Acer could have done a little better than $450. Still, we are paying a premium as somewhat, first adopters. Eventually I'm sure parts will become cheaper, as well as assembly and somewhere down the line the price will be more in line with what I consider to be perfect (aka $400 or less).
Your reasons were exactly why I went with the Acer over the Xoom although Im pretty sure they will get things sorted out. I hope both are a success as I really want to see some app development on the commercial side (games etc).

It is available for preorder at Negri Electronics for 750USD (a little steep imho)!

How to root video: http://androidroot.org/watch_video.php?v=3B53OKX72N7R
So, after many speculation it has a QUAD core CPU, 2GB RAM and a 5MP Camera. The only drawback is the 720 screen, not 1080, but anyway it is the perfect tablet imho, you can do everything with it!.
Will you buy it, and why?
That's WAY too expensive for a tablet.
Especially since it is a 16GB. They can't compete with prices like that.
lol 750 USD? this is gonna be a joke.
A Watcom digitizer is alone 200$ and when the tablet will be available on proper retail channels it will be around 550$. So, under that price it will worth every penny.
If the pen is not necessary, this is a subpar tablet. The TF700 is better.
This is the only thing that makes me want the tablet, SPen, and also Samsung build quality, i own the Prime and i know what i am talking about. TF700 suffers the same I/O problems like TF201.
I have been saving since introduction of first iPad to buy this. I have used windows tablets with wacom pens and only I know how frustrating that is.
Sent from GNote.
For that money they could provide NFC ...i don't understand the omission, you could pair it with your phone easily, Nexus 7 has it. At least it has BT 4.0.
it's a beautiful tablet with a great specs and s-pen but it's a little bit expensive.
i wonder what for the infra-red, remote control what, note 2 maybe?! samsung smart tv maybe?
Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 also has IR for the control of TVs and other IR enabled devices.
BTW, this device has the Apt-x codec for bluetooth audio (also BT 4.0 I believe). This codec works great and is sort of rare right now. OS X has it built in but it's sometimes difficult to use (other codecs compete, for some reason). Anyway, there is presently only a handful of devices that use this. I want it as I own a Soundmatters Foxl that uses this codec. It works well and sounds better than regular bluetooth audio (which is marginal).
Note: It's interesting that OS X has this codec but iOS does not. Lame. Also, it's apparently one of the only Android device that uses it.
I hope it does have exFat support (ntfs in my dreams .. ), my Prime has it.

Strange, why no 1080p? This one is top of the line Samsung tablet at the moment, should got at least 1080p. 1280x800 for 10.1" tablet is so yesteryear imo. Battery concern? Mali-400 can't handle 1080p?

When I sit down and give it a bit more thought perhaps I am being over critical...I just can't get excited yet! Will have to wait and see how it fairs in hands on reviews. I just hope the S Pen calibration is improved over the N7000. As a left handed user I find it pretty poor and the continuous cycle of having to reset the 'left handed' calibration option in the pen options is just frustrating, especially on a device designed to work with a pen! A slight bump in screen resolution and processor speed would have been a nice touch, though on balance these aren't necessarily going to be deal breakers.
I really don't need 1080 screen resolution...it comes with age (worse eye site)
As for pen, it's something different because it has 1024 pressure levels, not just 256 like our Note does.
Another selling point for me is the inclusion of 2GB of RAM, dreaming of dual booting in Ubuntu (or in worst case WinRT which needs a lot of RAM).

Sorry for the slight off topic but Touch Screen Tune from the market sorts out calibration. Does need root.

Also, if i activate the pen cursor in ICS i don't feel the need for any calibration.
Samsung has unveiled a new variant of the S-Pen, which comes bundled with all Note devices, called the BT S-Pen (BT standing for Bluetooth). It is, as far as I am aware, a regular S-Pen (albeit much larger for greater comfort) that connects to your Note device via Bluetooth and allows you to utilise it as a wireless-headset of sorts. Although bundled with pre-release test units of the Note 10.1 for journalists at their press conference, it simply utilises the regular technology of our Note 5.3 devices' S-Pens with Bluetooth to enable it to make and receive calls (meaning that it should work on the Note GT-N7000). Since one of the major complaints of the Note is the embarrassment of holding it up to your ear to make a phone call, I think this S-Pen is a fantastic accessory for the Note series. It can be charged via a Micro-USB port connected to the Note devices and apparently has 130 hours of standby time or 3 hours of talk time (not the best, but if you are like me and don't make too many calls that isn't a problem). Having been wanting a larger S-Pen to use around the house (the small one is fine out and about, but at home something larger would undeniably be more comfortable), this seems perfect. I shall be shelling out the cash for one as soon as it is available here in the UK, unless it is ridiculously priced. Who else likes the look of this?

Completely off-topic, but am I the only one finding the Note's community drastically dwindling? This is such a shame as, despite not having the best specification around in terms of raw power, the Note is still a very capable device and I think there are untapped opportunities for applications that would be useful when out of the house (hence, no good for a tablet which often are more reserved to home use and not a general pop to the store) but would not work on a regular phone's screen. In a way, I wish Samsung wasn't unveiling a Note 2 in a matter of days in Berlin. Since I am on contract and won't be able to upgrade till over a year, it's a shame to see the community here dwindling - and things will only be worse once the Note 2 is released.

Hopefully so. Since the S2 is apparently getting Jelly Bean, there is almost a definitive chance the Note will get Jelly Bean also! Let's just hope that Samsung finally fix the brick bug, which is a great cripple towards ROM development, eh?
Okay, so this is pretty cool. But I think it is suppose to be MORE for the Note 10.1 than the phone Note because it's huge, that wouldn't be comfortable or practical at all for our phone.

Weird. I think I would rather be seen talking into a slightly large phone than a pen.
I don't know how practical the Bluetooth pen will be. If your talking to someone with the pen, it's going to be very hard to use it to take notes or whatever.
And one handed operation on the note 5" our 10.1" wrote holding the pen to your ear is going to be impossible to do.
I guess it's only practical if you don't want to pull out the note from your pocket.
I still think head sets or earpiece are the way to go for hands free talking

sounds cool, but does anyone actually use the s=pen that comes with the phone ? when i was using my note as my full time phone ( dont really use it anymore ) i think i used the pen for the first 2 days and haven't pulled it out in at least 6 months
I realize it's a comparison between a phone and a tablet, but I really don't know which one to get at this point, so I'm hoping some people can possibly help me out
I was mainly interested in the Nexus 4 because of it's portability, camera (8MP), and it has cellular, which I might find useful. I haven't really messed with smaller Android devices though for too long (used 7-inch tablets), so I don't know how well I'll fair with the screen size. I also heard recently that the Nexus 4 wasn't on AOSP, and haven't really seen anything official saying it would ever be supported...
The Nexus 10 is clearly going to be a "slight" issue with portability. The camera is only 5MP, but I really don't know too much more then that (I'm sure there's other aspects to consider when comparing cameras other then megapixels). The screen size sounds amazing, and would be pretty entertaining for gaming and movies, and the resolution is even nicer. And from what I heard, this is the best device for AOSP currently Has no cellular however, but then again I don't think I would want to be using this thing for a phone either (perhaps I can get a hotspot?)
Hardware is another concern. If I assume right, the better the hardware, the longer the device will be supported by Google. With this in mind, the Nexus 10 would be the last device in the latest list of devices to stop receiving higher Android versions, due to the system specs (has more power to run later Android versions basically). Also, hardware determines how smoothly the device would operate as well. I'm certain that both the Nexus 4 and 10 can do the usual tasks without any issue at all, but gaming-wise, I feel the Nexus 10 would be better.
I also have a slight interest in trying to develop for Android in the future, with apps.
So basically:
Nexus 4 Benefits:
- Portability (main)
- Cellular
Disadvantages:
- No AOSP (yet anyway, if ever)
- Go out-of-date quicker
Nexus 10 Benefits:
- Hardware (main)
- AOSP
Disadvantages:
- Portability
- No Cellular (could maybe just get a hotspot though, idk)
As it stands currently, I can't really purchase either device at the moment (I don't have the funds or card from PayPal yet, Nexus 4 is out of stock, and Nexus 4 is a tiny bit more then I have in my PayPal currently). So I have a little bit before I can make a decision anyway Any help would be nice though.
Bump
The only thing lacking on the hardware side for the N4 is the screen resolution. If it were 1080, that would've taken the cake. Everything else about the phone is top notch, which is much more than can be said about the GNex which had weak hardware to begin with. So I don't see the N4 as going out of date anytime soon.
Honestly all it's going to come down to is one is a phone, and one is a tablet. The N4 can do pretty much everything the N10 can do, just on a smaller scale.
I have a N4 arriving tomorrow, and am considering getting the N10. The N4 will be mostly a tool for me whereas the N10 would be for entertainment and possibly productiveness (organization, notes, typing, etc.), plus the N4 could provide a hotspot for the N10. I'd be using the N10 for browsing when possible, and gaming when desired. I feel like browsing on a tablet is much better than on a 4 inch phone, but that comes at a price of at least $399 which I'm not sure I am going to be able to justify. I also may look into the whole watching TV on the tablet scene, and possibly movies, but other than those few things, I have no idea what I'd use a tablet for.
none because its impossible to buy
If you're between the 4 and the 10, why not consider the HSPA version of the Nexus 7? More portable than the 10 and has the cellular data, but still has a larger screen than the Nexus 4.

Yeah that's true, I just need to figure out which device I would want sooner then possibly later. I like the thought of a larger screen for some gaming, and I feel it might be more useful around the house, and nice to take to bed to do some reading and stuff.
Not sure how gaming would really be on the Nexus 4; I mean it would be possible of course, I just don't know if I would quite enjoy it as much on a smaller screen.
With NFC, I did like to pay for things at a fast food place and pharmacy downtown when I had my Nexus 7, and people found it pretty cool The factor of paying with NFC exists for both the 4 and 10, although I do wonder what people's initial response would be if I tap a 10-inch tablet to the pay pass lol. Taking pictures outdoors in public is probably another case where a phone might be a more "acceptable" device to use, instead of a 10-inch tablet (there was some pretty funny picture posted on xda on N7's forums I think with someone using an iPad to take a picture in a group of other people with phones and cameras)
Kinda wish I had both devices to test before buying lol... maybe I should just make cardboard cutouts for both and see how convenient each would be for some tasks

If you're between the 4 and the 10, why not consider the HSPA version of the Nexus 7? More portable than the 10 and has the cellular data, but still has a larger screen than the Nexus 4.

I had the Nexus 7, but idk. I mean it was a pretty nice device, but both the 4 and 10 have better hardware. Plus I kind of wanted to try out a different form factor other then 7-inch
I have an aging Samsung Galaxy Tab S and I've been looking for a replacement, but I'm having a LOT of trouble finding anything without fewer features. I got an Asus ZenPad 3s 10 yesterday and poor GPS, a lack of a vibration motor, and the small screen, 4:2 aspect ratio is prompting me to return it and look for something better. I thought I could settle on the Pixel C because it at least has a somewhat larger screen than most of the current model tablets, and it has a LITTLE wider of an aspect ratio, but then I find out that it lacks a vibration motor, which means I won't be able to get silent notifications, and it doesn't even have GPS!
Both of these are important features to me because I have bad eyesight. I need Haptic Feedback for the on-screen keyboard because it helps me type, and I tether my tablet to my phone for Google Maps/Waze to help my wife navigate.
I don't understand why Google's "Flagship" tablet would not only drop down to such a ridiculous aspect ratio, but also drop what seems to be basic functionality that ALL of the other Android devices have seen, from the T-Mobile G1 to the cheap $99 Black Friday tablets that my sister-in-law has bought for her kids.
It just doesn't have it. No need to ask why. Google is not going to respond to it. And most likely Pixel C is in his last days anyways.
but i do agree with you, Pixel C is a very nice tablet, but very poor features. no vibration, no NFC, no MicroSD, no SIM. It does have GPS i think

GPS wouldn't make sense in a tablet any way
The pixel c is still the best android tablet you can get
Vibration motor...not really needed you wont miss it for long
GPS....doesnt need it because theres no 3g/4g model so maps works fine over wifi
NFC.....again unless your planning on making a payment with your 10.2 inch tablet why would you need it
Ridiculous ratio?? Nothing ridiculous about it...nice landscape or portrait...everything displays and works normally
vibration would be nice when using on-screen keyboard, yeah i miss it
and about that gps missing:
oh well, guess not, don't know why it says GPS, GPS apps say there's no internal GPS, weird, would make a nice navigation for in the car

The lack of GPS was annoying because I got this tablet JUST to have in the car. So the choices were to get a Galaxy instead of keep the C and use an external BT GPS unit. Since Samsung is so horrid about updating its tablets (I already had one, the lack of updates on that one is why I was having to buy another one! I ended up buying a Dual XGPS150A from Amazon and hard-wiring it to my truck. Works perfect!
I tether mine to my phone and get location information that way. I use Google Maps on teh tablet while diving.

the pixel c seems to me one of the best tablet there is, you have it for a long time? Do you use it only at home or do you usually take it to more places?

I had for a year or so. Ive been completely anti apple for a long time but got an ipad pro for work and i must say i love it....everything works better and its built for the bigger tablet size format. I still prefer android but unfortunately there isnt really premium android tablets being made now. The s3 seems good but overpriced for an older processer and samsung software with very little updates. I loved my pixel c but its over 2 years now and it is cumborsome so i sold it...but if you need an android tablet i would still recommend the pixel c over anything else
