On fascinate, the default android keyboard does not have the option to un-check. So, even if I installed other keyboards, only the default keyboard is on. Is there any way to disable the stock keyboard and use other keyboard that I want to use?
Thanks!

In some cases, when you install a new keyboard manually (such as one of my favorites HTC_IME http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416), you have to go to Settings > Language & Keyboard and enable the checkbox next to the keyboard you installed.
After that, the instructions ksizzle listed above still apply.
Thanks!!! I do not have the phone with me right now, but I will try that!!
Coming from an HTC device, which has a keyboard that worked quite nicely, I was utterly disgusted by the horrible keyboard on this phone. Reading around a bit, I decided that Better Keyboard was the way to go, so I decided to shell out the $2.99 for it, and also downloaded a couple of the free themes. I now have a very good looking keyboard, which works 10 times better than the stock one.

It's called SilverBlue AndroidandMe. It's gray/silver keys over a medium blue background. It seems to fit well with the gray/blue theme that Samsung has implemented on this phone.
this is my first touch screen so what makes the htc and better keyboard better than the stock one?

The HTC_IME keyboard link I posted is pretty much the HTC keyboard with a ton of customizable options. And its a free download.

Ah darn, guess I should have hunted a little more. Oh well, I'm happy with better keyboard, and you can apply themes to it, for added value. For the record, I think it works even better than the HTC keyboard, but I'd have to actually try it on this phone to make a fair comparison. All I know is that I can type way faster on this one than I've ever been able to on a touchscreen phone before.

Hey people I don't know if anybody has asked this question yet but I'm very curious to know if the motorola xoom keyboard would work for the iconia A500?
it should work just fine, should work with your pc too as well and the playstation 3
Yes, it works.
Thanks for the answers I'm getting it for a really good price so I just wanted to make sure.

The quick launch keys on the top row don't work on the Iconia FYI, that's pretty much the only incompatibility though. Otherwise it works great.

The swiping on the ASUS keyboard is absolute garbage compared to Swype. It might as well not even be there.
Trying to official beta doesn't work - get an error about unsupported screen size.
I haven't tried forcing the issue.
-bZj
Too late for you now but the Amazon app store gave away flex9 keyboard which has swype functionality... in addition to voice dictation and handwriting.
swype feature is pretty good and works on the transformer.
I don't need a signature.
I have Swype and Dasur Slide it on mine and it is not a match made in heaven in the UK - as I have a conflict between the hardware keyboard and the software keyboard. It is very frustrating - as even though I have the software keyboards set to UK keyboards, this somehow alters the hardware keyboard to a US keyboard whne I re-dock. If anyone knows a way around this, I would be very grateful and the Asus trace keyboard is utter poo. I cannot use it. In fact I am not a big fan of Swype, I think Slide it is by far the best in its class.
I read a post here a few days ago showing how you could stop the dock keyboard being changed by the tab keyboard settings. Do search through the development forum. You need to move files around, etc.
I have Swype on mine but I don;t like it on the tab although it is great on my DesireHD. I use the Thumb keyboard which becomes natural very quickly.
EDIT
Here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14600447#post14600447
Have the newest beta on mine as well, works great! What I tend to do is make use of the resizable keyboard, make ik smaller, position it on the right.
This way I can hold the tablet with my left hand, and swype with the right, without moving too much across the screen.
The fail in combination with the hardware keyboard is a shame, there is a solution, but you do need root, which I haven't got around to yet.

I don't understand. I have Swype set as my software keyboard and am using the dock to type this. While I do get the annoying warning about setting the Asus keyboard when I first get things going, I haven't noticed any odd functions, or loss of capability. Am I missing something?

I don't have any problems either.
I think I did change something with the settings when I previously installed thumb keyboard (the @ was coming up as " with the dock keyboard) but I haven't had to do anything with swype.
Edit....I've not got round to rooting yet so I'm completely stock and using the uk layout.

I use Swype on both my Android phones and love it. A perfect present for Fathers day was an email saying that Swype had released a new beta which included additional Honeycomb support!

So I was so tired of not being able to long-press the upper row of the keyboard to input numbers, so I remember reading somewhere that Google had updated the keyboard with this feature for tablets, to my surprise, Play Store didn't notice any update, so I tried installing it from the play store website like I do pretty much always, and I got the update pushed to my phone.
I attach the link to the playstore here, even if it says INSTALLED, click on it and you will get the option to install it on the devices linked to your account.

Indeed. One of the best features for me is reducing "hold" time for secondary characters.

Different strokes for different folks. I prefer SwiftKey's functionality, but there's something about "stock" that's always appealing for me.
Thanks for letting us know. I'm a bit confused why keep this update hidden and not notify the users like a normal app would do, That's weird !

Guys, I've installed the last version from play store.
I have a problem that it seems to exist only on my (actually my wife's) N7II. I don't have it on other "regular" android phones...
When I press a key, I don't get that blue pop-up with the key pressed, if u know what I mean...
Does anyone get the key pressed on the blue pop-up ?!?
I searched on settings, but I haven't found nothing related to this...
Is this a bug or does it work like this on tablets (or at least on N7) ? Can also be a 4.3 bug??
Best keyboard setup with google keyboard is advanced setting, custom input styles, english (us) (pc). Gives you a pc keyboard layout. Numbers on top and symbols like your familiar qwerty pc board. Keys get small on portrait but thats what swyping is for.

What do you mean, "blue pop-up"? Letters don't "pop up" on the stock Android keyboard unless you hold down the key to select, say, a number or symbol.

But on my Samsung S3, Desire HD, Huwaei X5 (and so on...) it shows the contrary ...when I touch (or hold down, it's indifferent) a key on those devices I get that blue popup
Oh, and now I went to the keyboard settings and there is an option for that: "Popup on Keypress"
If I disable it, it wont show that popup as natural.
On N7 I can't remember quite if it's there and if it's enabled or not... only at night when I came back home...
Maybe this is a phone feature, maybe it's a nexus bug, a 4.3 bug... who knows...

None of those other phones ship with the stock Android keyboard- the S3 in particular uses Samsung's keyboard app, the Desire HD uses HTC's, the X5 Huawei's own app, etc. This is the stock keyboard app that is on Nexus devices: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.inputmethod.latin&hl=en
Edit- I've had a check, on tablets it doesn't do the pop-up because the keyboard is big enough for you to see the letters. Swiftkey does, I think. Try Swiftkey!

Is there any way to have a 5th number row for the stock keyboard? I had this for my Samsung Galaxy S5's stock keyboard (which I heard was just swiftkey).
The only ways I have found either involve a different keyboard installed, or it involves resizing my keyboard to a PC layout in the settings, but I don't want the extra keys on the main keyboard.
And then... there are custom roms which aren't really out yet.
Unfortunately no, I've been hoping Google would add a number row for ages.

Pretty ridiculous. It feels like such a downgrade when I'm moving to a taller screen but have less keys on my keyboard...
I could lower the delay needed to hold the key before the number gets inserted but I'd rather not. I wanted to try stock google because it's supposed to not lag like Swiftkey sometimes does. But not having that number row might be a deal breaker for me.
Something like this?? And yes it's the Google one.

Yes, that's exactly what I wanted, works perfectly, thanks! For whatever reason, flashfire wanted to enumerate partitions forever, so I ended up flashing through TWRP.
Two questions, can I change the long press delay for symbol keys (the original has settings for this), and is there any way to make the number row half height?
Edit: The height of the keyboard as well? Only thing I could find for that was an Xposed module which is not yet available to us.
I have a Google keyboard with a 5th numbers row. When installed its actually a Google branded keyboard just like stock. I've got it stashed on my Drive. You still need it?

Try this. Its based on google keyboard 4.0 as version 4.1 cannot be modified without breaking sync functionality. There is a version with number row and a version with long press symbols.

This. Swiftkey has been completely broken and laggy since they added the theme store update and made it free. Used to be brilliant, but now it lags like hell on every device I've owned since the Note 2.
The Samsung keyboard these days is actually the best around, surprisingly. Very responsive, even though it's based on Swiftkey, it doesn't lag. Like the Swiftkey of old.
I'm sure there are plenty of others out there on the play store, but it takes a lot for a keyboard provider to become trusted.
If I revoke any dodgy permissions like network access, it should never be able to transmit any data I type out right? Or am I being way too OCD with privacy there?
@Spartan117H3 123series is the number row. Yes, they are very similar. The keyboard that comes with Marshmello equipt phones is the same one as the google keyboard available on the play store, version 4.1. The keyboard I linked is based off the last 4.0 google keyboard update. So 2 updates ago. The only 2 main differences are: 1, you can still Swype though the space bar on gestures. 2, no dictionary sync, which is also the reason I haven't updated them to 4.1. Once google added account sync, any mods requiring decompalation break sync.
You can install this one along side google keyboard if you want as well.
