Regarding LED and ambient display - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Question 1)
Can I use both? Will ambient display show messages... Then when screen closes, the led kicks in?
Or would screen light up and led at same time
Question 2)
I use AC display... Which is sort of ambient display(never owned a moto or nexus 6).
Is ambient display basically the same thing? Meaning I won't need that

I have the Nexus 6 and when I get a message the ambient kicks in as well as the LED. . I am rooted to get light flow to work, but I imagine the 6P will be the same.

I had the original Moto X, and the ambient display worked just fine for me. It's a lot better than an LED, because it's bigger (therefore lighter) and you can see exactly what it is. And, as a bonus, you can check the time by simply picking the phone up (it doesn't turn on randomly).

1. Yes, you will be able to use both without any issues. Unlike the Nexus 6 one, this is a fully working RBG Light.
2. It is pretty much the same thing, yes. But I think AC Display is designed to look more like the Moto X Active Display thing. They do the same thing though.

Notification LED dull and not RGB?

Hey guys...one of the most used and important features in any Android phone for me is the RGB notification LED.
The S4 and Nexus 5 had great ones...I'm a little worried about the very dull one on the S5.
I cannot get Light Flow to work at all...and while I know the S5 is really new...just a little troublesome...

It does have an RGB flash, tested colors with LED Tester app, but haven't set up Lightflow, which is often rather complicated. You may restart your phone after setting it up and see if it works properly.
I guess it's duller because the plastic over it is thicker due to the IP certification (?), now why isn't there a cutout for it like for the sensors is beyond me.
I find it bright enough, far better than whats on HTC phones. I can also see it from a 45 degree angle, the one on the s4 was better still but not complaining as it still does its job

I went and downloaded that LED Tester program.. And no matter what color I choose.. It only blinks blue... (Even after a restart and deleting Light flow)

Led tester works perfectly for me in all colours. Be warned if you get an incoming notification whilst testing the colours, the light will revert to the notification colour until you click on the notification and reset the led.
Hope this makes sense lol

All off the LightFlow app developer's websites/servers are down. Could you please give me the run-down on what you did to fix it? (I'm having the exact same problem).
I agree the LED is VERY dull, my sister just got the LG g2 and the led on it is beautiful very bright and vivid colours.

General thoughts on "notification LED"

Generally speaking, (this is probably obvious to some) I feel they disabled/hid the notification LED controls due to its location directly behind the speaker. Previous devices had clearly visible notification LEDs, and its likely they felt it wasn't presentable enough to be enabled.
I'd imagine during preliminary designs the earpiece speaker was located slightly lower which would have given the led full and unobstructed view ability.
They likely changed the location of the speaker because the phone's front display wouldn't maintain symmetry. Just my random thoughts.

Good thought, but even now the LED is plenty visible so I'm not sure why they didn't just go with it

Probably due to the ambient display. Now that I sent back my nexus 6 and am using the note 4 till my 64gb nexus comes in, I really miss that feature. It's perfect for quick and easy notification access, but there's no way to tell if you have a new notification, without picking up the phone/turning the screen on. Having both ambient display and LED lights would be phenomenal.

+1 that would be a really useful combination! Devs will most likely figure something out to achieve that.
If the speaker was lower, wouldn't they have to move the LED with it anyway?
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Its not enabled because they have active display. Its there to tell you the phone is dead (no battery) when trying to turn it on.

Ya, see the blink and wave your hand over the phone to see whats up. Na, who needs that?! :cyclops:
From the source commit logs, the first revision of the phone only had a charging LED. The second added the tricolor one.
However, neither LED was ever at any time properly "attached" to android. The "glue" abstraction lib has never exposed either LED since the library's initial commit.

Moto display and AMOLED

I'm coming from a '13 Moto X. Moto Display is one of my favorite features. With the play, it looks terrible when the clock comes on, and the whole background is grey.
Is there any way to only show when there is a notification?
Does it fade to black when you pick it up for anyone else? Like the loss of gyroscope means it doesn't know I picked it up to look, and if I'm too slow I can't get it to come back on without using the power button.
This and a couple other things that bother me make me want to go back to my '13.

1. Your Moto X used AMOLED screen. X Play, X Pure use IPS LCD. With LCD whole screen lights up, AMOLED only lights up pixels accordingly. The clock is the main interface for Moto Display, I would say it is not possible to adjust it to show only when getting notifications. You'll probably could turn off Moto Display and use an app called AcDisplay instead.
2. On Lollipop the timeout is too short and I always missed to touch it and ended up using the power button. With MM the timeout has been increased probably an extra second, it is better now.

Thanks. I know its IPS and I personally think it looks terrible with Active display.
I still think the time out is to short, and it doesn't seem to ever know that its actually in my hand. I'm going back to my 2013 model.

Moto z notification light

Does it have notification light and if so where is it located?
I'm looking to buy moto z or note 7, not entirely sure which one to buy?
Z owners try this pleae
Turn phone off and insert charger.
G4 plus has a hidden notification light, next to the fingerprint reader is only visible trying the above method.
No it has the way cooler Ambient Display thing that Motorola's been doing for a few years

Everyone here is going to tell you to get the Z Force. Haven't seen a complaint thread
Thanks I do like the ambient display but I think double it up with notification light would be much more useful. The only issue with ambient display is the screen goes dark after a short period and Ambient Display kicks in again when you pick up your Phone. Notification light is constantly flashing so you're aware whenever you look at your phone without lifting or touching it.

Well, you could wave your hand over it, but yeah, you need to actively check it.
Get a smartwatch, then you'll know when the notifications come in
I posted this question to flossy Carter on youtube who confirmed it does have notification light. He's normally very reliable can anyone else confirm this?
I swear I remember seeing a white LED on this phone near the speaker or something when I first got it and I never saw it again after the first day...I think it has a notification light..

Yes you did see one, it is where the speaker is at. I have only seen it when the phone is powered off and I plug in the charger.

So is it similar to nexus 6 green notification light hidden within the speaker area?
^I never owned a nexus 6 but from your explanation, yes. There is a white led hidden.

Ok thanks for confirming. I've preordered it from Amazon uk expected to be delivered tomorrow, will know exactly what it's like. Funny thing it's already out of stock Amazon and not sure if they will restock which is slightly strange and concerning.

Its sounding like there is an auxillary light, but it cannot be used as a notification light (as of yet, perhaps we can access it if we get root like with the nexus 6)

So I heard a rumor that led notifications were also removed?

What else are they removing? Sales?

You get a bid amoled screen with AOD that works as a improved led. Something like that. Look at other phones with the same design and You Will see
Yep, AOD works for me. Have it on my Pixel...

A notification LED would be nice! I hope it has one. Never had a device with AOD but I'd prefer an LED myself.
No way aod is as bright and visible as led. I'm going to use their slogan on them and not buy this device.
"Never Settle"
Well I guess you can't expect to call batman using your screen
AFAIK there were rumors that said the LED is the bottom like on the Nexus 5 back then. I can't seem to find the proximity or ambient light sensor on the images so it could be. On the other hand I would say they have removed it in favor of the smaller notch. If I need to upgrade from my OnePlus 5T I'll probably have to choose between the OnePlus 6 and 6T. So either bigger notch with LED and headphone jack or smaller notch without them. Makes me not wanna buy a new phone...
Oneplus are making it very difficult to like this new phone.
They could make small part/dot on top of the display, use few pixels to act as a LED when screen is off. It's OLED so it shouldn't be a problem.?
So does it have led notifications?

No it doesn't.
Guys does it for sure have AOD or is it lift up display ambient display like the OnePlus 6? Anyone has a link that lists or confirms AOD? I watched a bunch of YouTube videos and no one talks about AOD which is VERY important if it doesn't have a notification LED.

I am definitely out then. One thing is the headphone jack being removed but the only other thing I liked about oneplus is led notifications.

No LED, and no AOD. Stupid as hell. I've been so hype for this release, and now no headphone jack, no led, and no AOD to replace it? Wtf is that. Guess I'll never settle for a OP again, unfortunately.
There's got to be some way to have the thing make some sort of blinking notification in the absence of the LED.
I'm fairly primed to buy one of these (coming from a 3T, to be used on ATT in the USA). Lack of LED is a big hit though. I gloat to my iPhone friends how I know which email account just had a new message via the LED being a specific color (I use Light Flow).

I was SERIOUSLY considering switching from my 6 to the 6T, but no notification LED and no AOD is a no go for me! How are you supposed to tell you have a notification if your phone is sitting on a table?
Yep. I don't want to root this phone and if it doesn't at LEAST include Always On Display, then it's a no go.
