That encryption though - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are a few videos on YouTube now of speed comparisons between the 6p, 5x, and original 5. The 6p and 5x consistently stomp the 5 into the ground with benchmarks, however the 5 usually actually seems to WIN at general performance. Only thing I can figure is that this is due to the forced encryption. Do you guys think there will be an easy hack to disable the encryption or no?

Actually almost every reviewer remarks about how the 6P is the fastest phone they've ever used (I think its even the title of one article). I know the video you are referring to and it was in loading some specific benchmarks that they lagged

If I did nothing but run storage benchmarks on my phone all day long maybe I would care about this. But in the almost 2 years I've had my N5 I think I might have done that once just to compare it to my N4 and N7.

The 5x and 6P are supposed to have hardware accelerated encryption.

It's still never going to be as fast with those API's blocking I/O. I'm fine with it though, a little extra security is a good thing. I don't do anything on my phone that requires super fast storage.

Software in the sense it doesn't have a hardware block, but it is using an instruction set that hasn't been there before.

So upset. Encrypting won't bring iSheep fans... I understand giving the option of encrypting but forcing and not giving the option of decrypting is a low blow...

Don't fret. It's a non-issue. Speed obviously isn't a problem, as the many reviews have stated. That was the only real reason to disable it before. You get a feature with little to no impact otherwise.

They don't even know what encryption is... they just recently got widgets and a 5"+ screen. Next, they discover a folder storage system baaaaaa baaaaaa

The nexus 6 encryption could be disabled with a modified kernel. I'd imagine it will be the same with the 6p. I'll disable it as soon as i can because I don't need it.

Funny. Actually apple uses hardware for encryption so it doesn't impact performance. The "right" way to do it imo.

I don't believe them. The Nexus 5 wouldn't be outperforming the Nexus 5x if that were true.

Hope you are right... Once someone figures out how to fully decrypt we will know the true difference between them.

Good lord. Damn encryption threads.... Regular usage is not effected by this. Only I/o speeds are. Opening apps and swiping screens won't get faster because you disable it. The 6p blows the doors off the 5 and 5 x in every day performance... The 5 and 5x were consistently slower at opening apps and didn't have enough ram to keep them in memory. The 5 did boot faster. That's due to encryption.

No. False. Just because they said their software is faster than hardware doesn't mean it's faster than no encryption at all like the N5.

Faster at what though? Benchmarks meant to saturate ram and CPU? That's not real world usage. Could care less about the benchmarks.

Also, I didn't see anything (I could have missed it) but did someone post proof that the 5 (unencrypted) beat the 5X or something, or is this all here say and speculation?

Step backward from the LG G2

I bought the 32gb, 3gb ram version from Amazon DE. I watched a lot of review sites and they generally praised the phone and said the performance was good. Here my initial thoughts:
-- the screen is too warm and makes everything look dull when compared to LG G2
-- Performance is very poor compared to the LG G2, G2 is snappy in comparison
-- animations, scrolling etc are running at 10-15fps or it seems. Compared to the LG G2, its buttery on the G2. Im a sucker for smooth animations
-- launching app - for some reasons there is a noticeable delay - that was rare on the G2
-- battery poor compared to the LG G2
-- games suffer from low frame rates compared to the LG G2.
-- youtube chrome cast bug - not a problem on G2 - means I'm unable to use me chromecast now. Bugger..
-- and the phone gets too hot..
-- hissing when using AUX output in car.
Antutu show the G3 as having lower performance them the G2.
I sold my G2 and feel like have just been robbed by LG. Yes, i loved the G2 and was expecting more of the same.
All this at the cost of having a quad hd screen - a marketing spec stunt, processor is marginally better then G2 on paper and GPU is the same as the G2. In real terms a massive step backwards in almost all regards.
I feel ****...
I have to agree in part.
I love this phone but it is clear that there are some steps backward.
The battery and slickness are my two main concerns.
However I LOVE the camera which is a substantial improvement.
I love the screen at 100% but it only takes about 3mins use before this gets throttled to 90%
The removable battery is a great idea in theory but I cannot find anywhere to buy a spare so what's the point?
The sd card is important to me and is probably the main reason I upgraded. If the G2 had a card slot I doubt I would have changed.
I am hoping many problems can be resolved in an update but I am getting the impression that LG are not the quickest with firmware updates - fingers crossed!
I have been reading too that it takes a week for the g3 to learn you use and battery life improves and I just hope the us models are better or they release a update to fix this issues

I have had mine over a week now and sot has maybe improved from 2hrs to 2hrs 30mins. Not enough of an improvement. I really want sot to last at least 3hrs 30 mins to see me through a full day of my usage.
I have read that to disable the permissions for the McAfee App will give significant improvements. I have just done this tonight so I will report back tomorrow if there is any improvement.

If its that bad download nomone and reduce the resolution. Personally i don't think its that bad, with a few tweaks and a custom launcher the phone is fine. I do think the S801 isn't really suitable for QHD though.

The lag goes away using a third party launcher such as nova. The phone hardware is fantastic, it's the software that lets it down in some things. With iPhones it is the complete opposite

Any ex iPhone 6 plus users??

Hi guys, just wondering how many of you out there owned a iPhone 6 plus & then went to a note 4??
Im currently thinking about jumping ship, there's things I love about the iPhone 6 plus & then there's things a like about the note 4!
Any advice guys?

But if you'll switch there will be no regret

Decisions are made by thinking what kind of life you have and what kind of guy you are, its very simple, if you like simplicity just stay with your iPhone, now if you are like me, a techy guys, first of all that's why I haven't own any apple products cuz you have to stick with what they offer that's all, like I was saying, myself, I like to play around, rooting, flashing roms, I like to have control of my phone, my cpu, my gpu, I like to overclock, under clock, overvolt, undervolt, I like the way I can make my phone software different from others, because I HAVE FULL CONTROL, I like my 32GB Note 4 plus my 128GB micro SD card, yes that's a hard drive, but I use it cuz im rooted and now I can record 4k videos for 30 minutes instead 5min stock, you have the idea??? i can go anywhere and plug my phone via usb and have access to my phone, i don't have to rely on apple software or any software to access my phone or transfer anything from any computer. Yes i know you guys can jailbreak but, its not even close, i work with several iphone users, i wish u can see their face admitting and showing me their iphone lagging, but lagging like really bad on the browser, u cant still access a lot of sites, no flash player support, damn if i keep going i wont let another user share their thoughts, well i hope you got my point, good luck bro if you ever jump to the Note 4 it will be a good experience, Android is open source, and that's what makes the difference, cheers:fingers-crossed:

that's stock vs stock, now bring me your iphone and lets play any song, like i said, after you root android its another world, after flashing Dr. Kertan sound mode on my Note 4 its definitely louder and better than my friends iphone, in everyway, also i don't have any problems playing any high end game on my Exynos Note 4. Also which Note did you compare the front camera? the 3.7MP wide lens on the front camera of the Note 4 is far way better than the one in the iphone, and im not talking because of the pixels, cheers:fingers-crossed:
I like the iPhone 6 plus for its simplicity os, better range of apps that seem more stable than android (although android is catching up). I love the iPhone's keyboard, And yes the music seems more loud & clearer on the iPhone. The battery on the 6+ is amazing. I like android because it's so open & your not limited like iOS. I'm also a tech guy & like to play about. It's like having a mini PC in your hand.

Oh boy! There we go. Another iOS vs Android war.
Anyways im just gonna contribute mine too. Y'all iPrisoners have no idea what you are missing until u get out of it. I used to be one myself until i crawled out of darkness. So I'd say dont just stick to people's opinions, buy it,try it and see for yourself.
IOS is simple from the beginning but the problem is if you already know all of it and you want to do more, you cannot do it on an iPhone. While on Android, it is not that complicated that you almost cannot use it from the start. But in time, it will get simpler. And if you already get used to it and you want to do more, you can do it on android. If you want more feature on Android, just install a third party app. While on IOS, you have to wait for a major upgrade to get few simple features. But still depends on your preferences.
If you're a heavy gamer, don't buy the Note 4. The gaming performance is great in Note 4 BUT after 20 mins the GPU underclocks and the game become laggy because it's overheating. I played intensive games in my sister's 6 Plus for 2 hours and the performance was still good.
Even though I have a Note 4 I would say keep the Iphone 6 plus, I had an iphone 6 and I miss quite a few thing about it, mostly the fluidness of ios 8.2 , I just couldn't deal with the poor battery life , the small and low res screen, but the Iphone 6 plus solves all of that, I would say wait for the note 5 maybe, the current touchwiz is quite ugly, we are still to get the new touchwiz found on the s6, lollipop 5.0.1 is slow , there's no permanent root, the bezels of the phone scratch like crazy, maybe wait a few months for thigs to settle , but I would say right now is not worth it ...

@yoniinfante
Im also a fan of Note 4 but you have to accept the truth that iphone 6+ is definitely better in front cam, there's no doubt about it.Also in terms of sound it is mind blowing out of the box & not by modding or rooting which voids the warranty.Gaming is also smooth in it,even playing for long durations.
I jumped ship. I had the iPhone 6 tough.
I do have a reason for the switch though and it stems from the bending issue.. I had my iphone 6 bend. even with the applecare + 2 year warranty, they laughed and told me I sat on it.
I've had every iPhone since they were released..
Went home, posted mine, my wife's iphones, 2 x apple tv and 2 ipads. All gone..
Apple is a garbage company.
The reason why it lags because the phone overheats. So if you know how to tweak your phones and install custom kernels, buy a faster phone and just underclock it so that it won't overheat instead of buying a slower phone. Most of the games can still be handled by Note 4 even on half the clock speed. And when you need a faster speed, you can set it back to normal clock.

Anyone withe the 6P have the 5X also?

I have the 5X and like it but like the phone junkie I am I want the 6P also. I was wondering if anyone with the 6P also has the 5X and is it really that much better. Thanks
My wife has the 5x. Its is a capable device. Similar in a lot of ways to the moto pure. Personally there is no comparison. The 6p is a better device but the 5x is still very capable.

Yea it does a good job. Thanks for the input.
Let me also add the biggest difference by far is the screen. Obviously size, so if you're a phablet person most likely you'd of gone with the 6p. Its a big, glorious screen. Not everyone likes that. Don't get me wrong, it feels great in hand. Better than my OPO, similar to the s6 but no lie it is still a big device. So obviously keep that in mind before you return the 5x.
The 5x screen is pretty nice. I played with my wife's for 3 days before I got my 6p in. If I wasn't on the phablet train I might of settled for that without issue. It really is a good little phone. That said, I love my AMOLED screen and the extra size really is nice for browsing which is how I mostly use my phone.
There are some performance differences as well. 6P being just slightly faster. There is a really good comparison video I'll see if I can find it. If I do I'll put it up here.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Yea I do like the size on my 5X but also still like my Nexus 6. I'm sure I will get the 6P sometime but to tell you the truth as far as the cameras go, I haven't seen that great of an improvement from the Nexus 6. Some of the low light tests I do around the house seem the same. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess.
I had both as well, the 6p just felt much better to me

The new "Low Power Consumption" feature - any feedback ?

Hello,
I just read that, along with the G6+, LG will deliver an update for the regular G6 which will enable a new "Lower Power Consumption" mode which is something I am very interested in. Does it really increase battery life for the G6 significantly (which would make me really consider buying it) ? I wonder if anyone has experience with this ?
Thanks !
Am I the only pissed that I spent $400+ on a phone 3 months ago and its already outdated. **** LG such Bull****.

It's a decent difference especially the 6gb of ram. When it comes to multi tasking. And with promotions from carriers it will barely be more. Let alone they come with ear phones not a crappy Google home.

This is like saying people who bought the Galaxy S8 should be pissed about the Note 8 when it's released in August. There's always going to be the next bigger, better thing man. That's how tech is. Just be happy LG is going to release the software update to the regular G6

I hope it is some kind of tool to control apps running in the background by itself. I find the app power monitor tool in Samsung devices really useful.

Wrong that's the note 8 we new it was coming. As well as the v30. But 3 months ago no one expected to already be outdated. Opinions vary but trust me I love my phone would love it more with the + features mostly the ram. I use multiple window a lot. With ram heavy apps.

As far as power save mode. I guess it's like greenifu. Hopefully like Samsung power saving mode

All I'm saying is that what happens when you buy tech right when it comes out. You can always wait 4 months and get it cheaper or get the next big thing.
And I think greenify is ****. I used it for awhile and saw only marginal improvement and it makes the screen flash when you turn it off while it hibernates everything and to me that was super annoying.

True 100% but I already got good deal on my phone but don't want to upgrade again. The g7 will be OLED so I'll just wait. I never use greenify. I never have battery issues and with qc. Who even cares IMO truly. Turning of data is IMO the best way to save battery.

G6+ will keep the actual 4GB... For me, it's just a little update. Not worthy

"Aside from the bump in storage, the LG G6+ has the same specs as the standard variant, including a 5.7-inch QHD+ display, Snapdragon 821, 4GB of RAM, microSD slot, dual 13MP cameras at the back, 5MP front shooter, Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, USB-C, and a 3300mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 and Qi wireless charging. LG is also bundling a pair of B&O Play earphones that are designed to take full advantage of the 32-bit Quad DAC."

"The LG G6+ doubles the internal storage to 128GB, but the RAM remains at 4GB. LG also brought Qi wireless charging to the Plus model."

I'll prefer wait for an official answer from LG. Anyway, i came from an OP3, and memory is not a problem yet with LG G6

Turning off the phone is an even better way to save battery !
Seriously, do you listen to yourself ? Why do people buy "SMARTphones" ? Why do people buy FLAGSHIPS ? To save battery by disconnecting them from the Internet ? A Nokia 100 would have been much cheaper for you. I need my flagship smartphone to do business, to be connected, to be notified, to respond in real time.
They need to fix the network switching in low signals area. If I don't force LTE only network keep switching trough 2g-3g-4g. This continuous switching causes battery drain and heating.
Hope that will fix this.
Could they have found a way to fix the high percentage of phone idle? It would be great

Because when I'm at work and I can't have my phone on me it has to be locked in my locker. I don't need it sitting their constantly updating everything. I could restrict background data on all apps I guess. Or if once I take my lunch or break I switch data back on. Bam get all my emails and FB,SC, or whatever updates right than. Or say I'm at the movie theater I don't need data on so might as well switch it off. It may be extra 5% saved over a 2 hour movie but still it all adds up right. So yes I listen to myself bit truly I have ZERO issue with my battery. We but flagships for performance and or features, does that mean we instantly have to sacrifice battery life for it? The droid ultra MAXX was sadly a decently bad phone but the battery life was amazing. LG also makes X-power phone with a monster battery and decent specs too. All phones have trade offs but still not everyone can "respond in real time" so therefore data can be shut off

I've heard many people do a factory reset and solve that idle issue. I don't have it so I can't say 100% I will test my phone tomorrow from full to 20% and see what the results are

Strange, I've heard no one who solved this =(
Even users that reach 6-7 sot have as second voice the phone idle, which was a serious problem on G5 too on both marshmallow and nougat.
Btw already tried to disable Qmemo+ as someone suggested, made clean installation of 10F firmware and a second reset after nothing worked.
I'm pretty sure that is a LG problem since a guy who works with me in the same place with the same operator didn't have any problems with the S7Edge before and the S8+ now. That's why I hope for a fix xD

Couldn't get phone any lower heading to bed gotta plug in. Here's what I got. Basically seems that phone isle uses right around 1% an hour and truly I don't see that as a problem at all.

Hate my S8, which AOSP phone to buy?

Hi everyone. I've searched all over xda and Google, but it's hard to find a direct answer to this. The S8 is a great piece of kit, but after 2 years I'm just plain sick of using it. Not only is the screen burning in, the software keeps getting worse, and these snapdragon models (950u) don't look ROM friendly. After the pie update, I'm ready to find a Li eage OS-friendly alternative. Anybody else feel the same way? What did you do?

I just installed the new Pie update, and I'm about to throw my S8 out the window. It's laggy as hell and still retains every annoyance, just prettier now...with removed functionality. I'm done. What AOSP friendly phone is best to replace this one? My most important features are the camera, expandable memory, water resistance, hdmi out, and headphones jack. I don't care if it's older, but the camera must at least be equal to this.
Also, a screen without burn-in is a big perk. After 4 years of daily navigation my S5 still has a clean screen, but my S8 has the Google Maps UI burned in after less than 2 years. What a piece of crap! After 2002, burn in was something you explained when kids asked about screen savers, or you'd see only in screens that were left on for months. Ironically, Samsung pioneered the screens that solved burn-in back then, now they just want you to throw away this garbage a couple years later. Disgusting.

Yes, I have a Snapdragon G950U (tmo). Oh, so close! I'm completely new to exynos projects, do they often make it to snapdragons easily? Will the bootloader battery restriction still be an issue?
On a related note, I've seen some posts saying Samsung has sometimes replaced burnt screens. Anybody else had experience here? Even if I keep the phone, this screen needs replacement. If I have to pay for that, it seems easier to sell this one and buy a rom-friendly phone. If that's the case, I probably don't want to get another Samsung.
