Hardware revision? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Is hardware revision a myth in Nexuses' story or real? You might remember the whole story with the "new" hardware for Hammerhead with bigger speaker holes, etc.
I'm asking in order to know if I should buy when available (still not in my country) or wait until the end of the year.
Thanks!

somebody brought this up in another thread and i can't remember a Nexus device since the N1 that had any sort of hardware revision that would have any impact to the core functionality of the device itself (think lifecycle, improvement in performance, change in battery, etc). there's always a possibility that the hardware manufacturer decides to source parts from another distributor which MAY mean different tech/revision, etc., but this is more rare now than ever.
are you just worried about becoming an early adopter? devices like these aren't like vehicles. when you purchase a TV, you're probably less concerned about the model revision than the actual size/performance/features. the chromecast remained largely unchanged since its release. you can almost guarantee that these devices will have no hardware changes.

I clearly recall a revision for the Nexus 5 (I waited for it), that was about improving the speaker volume by increasing the size of the speaker holes. Is that considered a functional update?

Hardware differences
I bought my first Nexus 6P on January 2016...it happens that a bit more than 1 year later, it crashed and fell into the infamous bootloop bug with no way for myself to recover it. It was sent to Huawei service center in the USA "to be repaired"... A few days passed by and I got an email from them, telling me that they had assessed that my phone was essentially fried and since I had warranty (still !) they would be sending me a "replacement unit". I was truly worried if I would be getting a refurbished unit or a new one. By the way, the unit I sent, the one with the bootloop was in PRISTINE state.
I have gotten now a replacement unit and noticed several different things: here are some pieces of data from each device:
Old 6P, Replacement 6P
BL: angler-03-64, angler-03-62
Baseband: angler-03.78, angler-03.72
Product/Variant: ANGLER-VN2, ANGLER-VN2
Serial Number: XXXXX15C03XXXXXX, XXXXX16B04XXXXXX
Manufacture date: 03-DIC-2015, 04-NOV-2016
CPU: MSM8994 0x2001, MSM8994 0x2001
eMMC: 128GB Samsung, 128GB Toshiba
DRAM 3072MB HYNIX LPDDR4, 3072MB MICRON LPDDR4
Factory OS: Android 6.x, Android 7.0
As you can see above, the "new" device was manufactured almost 1 year after the "old" one; 11 months to be precise.
The memory in case of the eMMC is Samsung in the older one and Toshiba in the new one., the DRAM is HYNIX in the old one and MICRON in the new one.
Based on the fact that this "replacement unit" was manufactured in November 2016 and I am getting it in mid March 2017, I think it is fairly safe to assume that this is a "new" device that hasn't been "out" of Huawei, that it it hasn't been sold before to other end user... Of course this is only a wild guess...wishful thinking if you wish.
So, it is quite probable that there are also some type of hardware revisions as to correct minor issues, specially those where the "original" components proved to be
prone to failures or certain "issues".
Could this be considered a hardware version or a hardware revision? Not sure...it there are instrinsic design changes, I'd say YES, if this is only a change in vendor's name for the memory, then NO (if the other vendor's memory has exactly the same specs).... But, what about quality of those components? could it be different from one vendor to the other? Could that be the case of some issues...such as the bootlloop problem? Still lots of questions in the air. Your comments are welcome.
Kind regards.

What program did u use to get that information?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

Nexus 6P Hardware versions
I didn't use any program to gather this information, instead I just booted the 6P into bootloader modr and got this information right there on the screen.
Turn off your phone, wait a couple of seconds, press and hold the volume down key and simultaneously press the power button. Your phone should boot into bootloader mode with a large set of information on the lower left quarter of your screen and a green Android being serviced in the middle. If you hit the volume up/down keys, the selected option should change, press power button to select any one of those. The "Barcodes" option presents additional to about your phone.
By the way, the Serial number of your phone has in fact encoded its manufacture date as follows:
From the serial number (S/N) you will find:
Pos 6-7: Year
Pos 8: Month (Oct=A, Nov=B, Dec=C)
Pos 9-10: Date
E.g. my S/N is XXX021671400XXXX
So manufacturing date of my*the device*is July 14, 2016.

this is my 3rd nexus 6p with manufacturing date nov 2015 with samsung internal drive.. the 2nd unit i got before was with manufuctu ing date december 2015 with toshiba. both dont have bootloop problem . hopefully it will stay this way but only time can tell.

Was this an official outlet? Sounds more likely he's got his hands on prototypes or review models...
I'd stay away from a device without Samsung Branding, as when have you known Samsung not to stick their logo on the phone?
hmm...
If I am not mistaken, the Korean models have no Samsung logo on the front.

Samsung not having a Bright White logo on GS II is strange!! I can not agree more but I made the guy call his boss and ask!! and I made sure that what I saw was retail version with 1.2GHZ CPU.
Now I have more ....
As you know, from one certain date Samsung replaced pictures with ones with logo. from then almost every online store and mobile reviewer changed their pictures too. Recently I realized Telenor and Tele2 (bigest phone companies in sweden) changed back pictures to ones without Samsung logo.
You can chek it yourself.( As I am sure you know! web sites are .se rather than .com or ...)

Nexus S. It has the Samsung in the back cover.
But I don't believe it would come to sweden without Samsung text in front, when it does in Finland.
I have my doubts about this information. I don't doubt the veracity of what you're saying, but of the information you were given.
First, I wouldn't put it past the regional marketing branch of Samsung to hand out some of the former prototype devices to retailers to look at and Media Markt may have mistook it for a display model. Second, the very fact that Samsung doesn't include an MHI adapter cable is strange, especially when they're rare to come by and other manufacturers like Nokia have set the standard (my N8 came with an HDMI cable, USB-to-Go cable, you name it), so I think the local MM manager is just going on logic without really checking things up.
Yesterday I was in an ElGiganten in Stockholm and the whole front of the store was decked out in huge display boards. They expected to be ready for release on May 6, and kind of miffed about having to wait until May 12. Won't they look rediculous when they realize all their expensive marketing material doesn't even look like the device to be sold - with a Samsung logo on it.
I would be very surprised if the hardware versions delivered to the various EU countries have any significant differences (and I prefer the Samsung lable on the front). But then again, stranger things have happened.
The samsung brand is on the back... Strangely like the iPhone?!
And its not just Sweden. If you visit the Samsung page (swedish, finnish, whatever), only the front page and top images have it - the rest in the actual specification/advertisment of the phone doesnt have it. Three UK shows it without the name. Etc and so on.
You're right about the local Samsung page, it's a mixed bag.
The retailer pictures vary, but the OP is right in saying that a surprising number of retailers now or still have the photos without the logo on the front.
If this is true, it makes me worry that there might be other less benign differences from the units that we've seen from the UK, like cheaper camera sensors or the like.
Let's hope that there is no hardware difference in EU. I really hate it when they do that.
The worst case scenario is Samsung having many first production devices that we know as test devices mostly with 1 GHZ CPU and then they realized that they want to go with 1.2 GHZ and the Samsung LOGO and rest is not so hard to guess since CPU speed is just the matter of over clocking old devices and ..... OH just find a cold place in north to get rid of them ))))
I really hope that I am wrong ..... we will know in less than 5 days.
Danish version...
.... seems to be just like the Swedish version - or rather the version i bought.
No logo on front - also no NFC, and only 16 Gb version without memorycard in the box. BUT... also no HDMI-converter. This version actually comes from warehouses in Sweden, where Telia stores it.
But the specs on the phone shows 1,2 Ghz dual-core, and the rest of the specs fully complies with the specs from Samsung on this phone.

This is because usually carriers force their logos on the front. This was partially the reason why iPhone arrived so late in Korea. Apple wouldn't let anyone touch'em.

The Nordic countries always share the same version (at least in my experience of Samsung).
Has it already been released in Denmark???
Could you use Android System Info and see if it looks the same as Swedroid's UK device shown in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt7mdInSWqk&feature=relmfu
At 3:26 it shows some CPU info (although not entirely accurate, it does show the use of the CPU going up to 1.2 GHz).
I Saw CONVERTER WITH MY EYES!!!
People ! I saw the converter that comes with GSII in box in Sweden @ least from Media Market it is a Charger/HDMI converter you use it to charge cell phone or plug HDMI cable. You can see it in the post here for Infuse4G "http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-Infuse-4G-HDMI-out-Adapter-Demonstration_id18667"
So now you can charge and use HDMI @ same time.

[Q] tab 4 7 inch suspicious if samsung have sent out reconditioned tablets as new?

i just bought a samsung tab 4 7 inch and im a little suspicious about whether it is a brand new device or whether it's a reconditioned refurbished unit reset out and sold as new..
firstly upon opening the stickers on the back of plastic see through plastic has 2 cut out square holes in it (Which is fine) but there should be another plastic sheet undeneath that covers the square holes where it says samsung etc.. on my note pro 12.2 it came with 2 plastic see through sheets one on the back and one underneath it with the imei and serial number sticker on it so that when i remove it the imei/serial sticker comes off.. on my actual tab 4 7 inch the imei sticker is stuck to the actual back of the tab so i would have to peel off and damage the imei/serial sticker in the process.. does anyone else with tab 4 7 inch have it like?
also the software was already up to date for some reason.. normally when i buy a samsung device depending on manugacture date it still has software updates to be downloaded.. this one has the latest version so im suspicious that the device was updated to the latest firmware and factory resetted.
is there any way to check when the tablet was manufactured so i can tell if the software update was done before?
is it inconceivable samsung would send out refurbished units as brand new? ie tablets sent back found to not have a fault updated to the latest firmware with new imei and serial number.
in the kernel bit it says #2 which is making me suspicious.. what does that mean?
it seems strange why it has the latest firmware.. surely if it is brand new and manufactured a while ago it wouldn't have the latest firmware updates. i dont know how many updates the tab 4 7 inch has as it's a budget range but i assume it has 2 firmwares given it came out in may 2014, mine says 0ctober 2014 the firmware version is.. is it possible it was just manufactured in the past few months hence why it has the latest version?>
im suspicious because whenever i returned a samsung item it's always had the latest firmware due to updates so even if u factory reset it retains the latest version. if samsung received it as a returned tablet they automatically uypdate the firmware to the latest version no matter whether it needs to be repaired or whatever.. is it possihble i have a refurbished unit?
the seller i bought it from is biggest electricals company in my country so they definitely only sell brand new stuff also the box was sealed but that doesnt mean anything really.. as when samsung ships it out they can just put a new box and seal it up.
is this plausible?

When was your M9 built? (Production date thread)

Just found this explanation on the serial code including production date:

I thought it was stupid to ask someone if there are differences between different factory units, untile I saw that this guy got 2 different models!!
really looking forward to know if he spotted something
+1
Well, absolutely no difference except build quality. The present one still has some minor build quality issues, but nothing to worry about.
I bought my phone directly from HTC a few days after they were available.

Joying 2G (JY-UL128N2 or JY-UL135N2) or going for the new Dasaita PX5 based (HA2153)

Hi,
I've been reading this forum for the last few weeks to get educated regarding the leading Andoird HU out there (there are so many of them...), and I came to the conclusion that the leading options are the 2G Joying units - in terms of experience, accumulated knowledge here in the forum and performance (Prefer proved and tested to new and latest) and . I'm still not sure should I go for the touch version of the physical buttons one (your thoughts are welcome)? In addition, there is the very new Dasaita that looks very serious, but I did not see a lot of people with it, so I don't know how good it is... I also looked at the ownice C500, but I saw there there are some issues, thought to stick with the options above.
Your thoughts will be very much appreciated, the car will arrive next week and I want to take advantage of the 10-8% discount for Valentines day
Joying are saying their new octacore (guessing PX5) units will be launched in March so might be worth waiting a month to see if they are any good or get an Intel unit cheaper if not. Joying discounts seem to come round quite often so I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry just for that.
Thanks WILD9. My question is if the new systems are stable at the get go from your experience? I mean would you purchase the first iteration of a new line of product (I can wait for a month with the existing system I guess...) or is it better to wait a few months so Joying will "iron out" any first release glitchs? (in that case I prefer to buy previous generation than wait for additional 6 months) or maybe any other new fixes are SW only? I just don't have the mileage with those systems.
If first iterations are good, maybe go for the Dasaita (hotaudio) PX5 unit?
No more thoughts?...
Hard to say, Joying seem to have a reasonable track record recently but as with most of the Chinese products they don't tend to be too intensively tested before launch, if solid proven performance is a priority then I'd say the Joying Intel Sofia units should be top of your list.
Thanks WILD, I ordered the Joying 2G
I bought the 2G a couple of days ago. Had an Erisin MTCD before. This feels like a next-gen product compared to that. The speed difference is yuuge as a certain president would say. No custom roms or Xposed yet, but it's early days still. Very happy so far.

New HU with Faked OS

Recently picked up my first Android HU from Amazon for my Jeep, so I'm pretty much a newb, but from a brief crash course around here, I believe the unit is a Junsun V1 Pro MTK8667 8/128GB (Mfr: Alps, Model: FF_866X, Seller: Awesafe/Shenzhen Datong World Technology Co. Ltd). The HU actually operates pretty darn well, but my question is regarding the OS version. The seller advertises Android 12 in multiple places and the system boots with an Android 12 splash screen, but executing Fake Device Test reports the actual OS as version 10. I have inquired with the seller regarding the OS version, and they are playing dumb and asking me to provide a screenshot of the OS version as reported in the device About menu, which shows 12 and is obviously faked. I provided the Fake Device Test screenshot showing version 10, but waiting for their response.
Few questions:
1. Are the OS version results from Fake Device Test reliable, any reason to question the results? I'm guessing the seller will dispute the results.
2. Are there significant disadvantages to buying a new HU in 2023 with (hacked) Android 10, or is it worth finding a unit with genuine 11 or 12? Rather not have new app compatibility issues a few years down the road.
3. Any suggestions for where, or brand, to purchase with somewhat honest sellers? This unit was about $400, prefer to spend no more than $500 and 128GB for storing lots of offline maps. There are a bunch of HUs on Amazon advertising Android 12, but I wonder if most are likely fake.
I'm leaning towards returning this unit based on principle alone, especially since I'm still within the return window.
Thanks for any insight!
Doug
1.open an vm or termux and see if it exited/terminated/killed
2.check phantom process property
/system/bin/device_config set_sync_disabled_for_tests persistent; /system/bin/device_config
put activity_manager max_phantom_processes 2147483647
because android12 has a phantom process limit
Try installing an app that requires android 12. See it fail to install, then return the headunit. If I spent $400 on a head unit and it was not exactly as advertised I would return it immediately. I have bought cars that ran for less money.
