Hello, I am considering buying a Htc hd2 from ebay. Will i simply be able to pop in my t-mobile SIM card? I also do not have a data plan and was counting on using the wifi. I also want to install android 2.2 with sense or maybe a cyanogen mod. I am very unfamiliar with android and was hoping for a recommendation. In order to install custom Rom's i understand that it requires accessing the SD card on the phone. Can i simply do this by plugging in my phone with the SD card inside? or do i need a separate cable? Also I used to be into jailbreaking my ipod touch, and I was fearless about it because you could always restore the device if you messed up the jailbreak. Is there an equivalent for the HD2?
Sorry i have so many questions, and thanks in advance for anyone who chooses to answer.
Yeah

+1 for Nokia 5110
Lol no thanks... can anyone answer some of my questions?

first off buy one from craigslist, there about 200 bucks. much cheaper then ebay. Ive bought 8 of them in the past month, never spending over 230. No more Iphones in my family!
I am not sure how tmobile does things, but on att you do not.
Custom Windows Mobile roms Do not require the SD Card, but are required to run android successfully. There are other steps involved in the, its the first sticky in this forum.
Running Android does require an SDcard and cable. Your phone should come with both, if it doesn't, they are ripping you off and look else where.
You can keep the card in the your phone while you do the transfer, there is no reason to take it out.
there are many recovery options available if you break your phone, which is nearly impossible to do.
For android i use darkstones hd2proyo and cm6_leo. both are amazing. I lean towards darkstone, because its faster and has better compatibility with games, however cm6 has many many more features.

You can either take the memory card out of the phone and connect to your PC directly, or just plug the micro USB cable in to your PC, active sync will allow you to access the "Storage Card" on your phone within My Computer.
Android is simple to install - just read a few of the chefs posts - just download and unzip, copy to memory card.
I think you will enjoy.
Thanks for all the help! also is there any downside to dual booting? For example, will texts i receive on android show up on wm and vise versa?
If you receive a text while in WinMo it will not be in your message list when you start Android.
what about the other way around?
Which ever os you happen to be using at the time any notification ie missed call, call log , txt etc will stay on that particular os.
I'm now on my 2nd Focus because of this problem. 1st off, I do have an SD card in there but have not had any restart or any problems which seem to be due to the card.
I had the first Focus for about 3 weeks when all of a sudden it wouldn't connect to any cellular data. No EDGE or 3G. It would connect to WiFi and I could still make/receive calls and texts. But no internet or MMS. So I chatted with AT&T. End result: restore phone. I restored the phone WITH the same SD card in it and it worked fine...until the next day. Same problem, lost all cellular data connections. So then I chatted with Samsung. They suggested it was due to some 3rd party apps I installed (which I though was BS). So I ended up going into the AT&T store and they gave me a new one.
So I've had the 2nd Focus for about a week now and everything was working perfectly fine (with the same SD card in it). But about an hour ago, I lost all cellular data AGAIN! Restarted, toggled data connection off then on again, but still won't connect.
Could this problem really be caused by the SD card (as AT&T said?) I just don't see how an SD card can mess up cellular data. I know it does cause performance problems for some people, but cutting off data?
I guess nobody else is having this problem?
I went ahead and restored my phone again since I couldn't live without 3G connection. Still don't understand what's causing the problem though.

Obviously, you've tried removing the SD card? AT&T and M$ have yet to announce any compatible cards, officially. People have reported issues with the cards up to several days after installing them.

When I remove the SD card without restoring it just reverts back to a new install (since it can't see some of the data on the card I'm guessing) and the 3G works. I put the SD card back in and all my data is back but the 3G or any cellular data connection is gone again.
After restoring it this last time, I get 3G back (as usual) with the SD card still installed and have had 3G since I restored it.
It just seems like I'm the only person having problems with my cellular connection and the SD card, and I don't understand how the SD card can affect that. I understand loss of data or performance issues but not loss of 3G...
And as far as when I usually lose 3G, I have had info saved on the SD card for days before. Each time I've restored with the SD card in I sync all my music back to it and it definitely rolls over to the SD card. I haven't put anything on it this time to see if it will lose connection within a week like it's done before.

Yeah, it's tough to imagine a link between the SD card and the data connection, but, clearly there is. It may be in the manner that WP7 addresses the memory. It treats it as one large drive and, perhaps, after the hard reset some of the system data that deals with the data connection gets written onto the card?
Who knows? Pretty strange. It'll be interesting to see what happens now.
Thought it was time for an update on the situation...
It happened again and I had to restore the phone 1 more time a week or less after my last post. I did leave the SD card in as I normally do. The only difference was I didn't put ALL my music when I synced it (all my music adds up to well over 8GB). Instead I only put a little to where the total space taken was far less than 8GB. As I kept installing apps, taking pics/vids, blah blah blah it is now at the 8GB mark. There is a little noticeable lag now, but nothing unbearable at all. What hasn't happened (yet) is the loss of cellular data.
I'm hoping it doesn't do it again, or the upcoming update will address some SD card issues as well as copy paste. *crosses fingers*
considering it keeps happening and the 1 mainstay is the sd card....id try it without the card.... if it runs smooth...its the card.... if it screws up its something else... just too simple not to try... from what ive read, sd cards have caused a wide variety of problems, from just reboots to the extreme of bricking phones....
you havent even mentioned what brand and class card it is... it could be one of the unstable ones... if so theres your answer...

It's a Kingston 16GB Class 4, so it's confirmed working. It does seem the SD card is the problem, but (1) I don't get how the SD card can cause cellular data failure and (2) why am I the only one that is having the problem? (at least it seems like I'm the only one having a problem with losing cellular data)

well just might be a bad card... not everything that makes the shelf is perfect...
as for the why.. like i said before , there are a variety of problems... just not restarts and losing data... ive seen locking in airplane mode...ive seen bricking...etc
like i said take it out and try it.. its the only way to be sure... if it is.. try another card format the phone... put the new card in and format it 2 times and go from there....

I don't have any card at all, but my focus also losing all data connection. It disconnects from network during switching between several cell towers. I need to reset my phone several times during my travel from home to work. It looses connection always in the same place

I'm having the same problem, the data connection works fine but there're times when it says it's connected but it can't download or upload anything, the only way to fix this is by turning off and on the phone and then the data connection works again. Not even the ON/OFF switch for data in settings fix the problem.
I also have problems with the signal in general, sometimes it loses connection to my service provider and after some seconds it finds the service again, maybe a problem with the radio?
Samsung Focus: No memory card installed, using it in Venezuela (Movistar), 3G/E data service.
I already reported this issue to the WP Support Forums, I think they're investigating the problem because I haven't had any feedback since the last time more than a week ago, here it is:

If somebody has this problem feel free to vote for my post to let them notice that it's not an one-person problem
Same issue
I am on Fido/Rogers in Canada and get the same problem from time to time, no SD card installed.
In my case, it happens after I lose signal for a while, like garage or no signal area...When I get a signal back, the data portion just won't connect, even though I can make and receive calls and my phone displays 3G.
Reboot takes care of it.
Just found this thread. I've been having this issue for the past two days. Have never installed an SD card in my Focus. I tried the HSUPA hack a few days ago. I thought that was the cause. So I asked for help to undo the hack.
I've only had my Focus for a couple of days.
I was experiencing a lost of data connection eariler today. I think it's to do with your location/network provider.
On my X1, I use to turn flight mode on and off to fix the problem - forcing the phone to reconnect.
Sometimes the signal is GPRS and other times 3G.
How many of you experiencing this are using the Facebook app? I was having the problem today (it started this morning) and after uninstalling the FB app (where i was noticing the problem most) and a soft reset, I'm not seeming to have the problem.

So now that I think about it, when i wasn't receiving data, the phone showed full signal, even though in my office i usually get 2 bars. After the uninstall and soft reset, im now showing the 2 bars. No idea if it was causing this, but seems a strange thing to have happen.
i do have the same problem. deactvating data connection and activating again doesnt work. You dont need to restore phone to make it work again, just go to settings -> cellular -> network selection ... remove automatic and wait till it finishes searching..select you operator or automatic again it should reset your connection settings and 3g/edge should work again.
mine is an unlocked AT&T might be a problem with the unlocking mecanism if you guys also using unlocked phones.
not sure how to solve it yet.

Never used Facebook App. Did notice when it happened today, that after I close IE I had 7 yahoo emails. I'm wondering if the limited multi-tasking carries over to data. When the phone is syncing, maybe it shuts other connections down.
Go to the diagnotic app
Go to the diagnostic page post #150 I believe this will fix you issues

and it starts after mango update
I have a very strange problem that I need help with. Whenever I turn WiFi off it immediately turns itself back on. This started happening after I got a new Straight-talk Sim card (I needed a new one for porting a phone number purposes). If I use my old straight-talk I can turn WiFi on and off, if I use an old inactive T-Mobile Sim I can turn it on and off, and if I boot with no Sim I can turn it on and off. I have tried multiple APN settings to try to see if that might be the issue. This issue seems very much to be related to this new Sim card though, as it has repeated itself a good ten reboots. So it sounds crazy but is there really something that Straight-talk could be putting in their Sim cards to keep WiFi on at all times, and if so is there anyway to disable that. I'm going to try to reset everything to confirm it isn't a software issue, but since the issue only exists with this new Sim card and doesn't present itself with two other Sim cards I'm pretty confident that it is not a software issue.
I am rooted so if something in the buildprop could cause this I would be willing to investigate.
Also not sure if it is related but this Sim card that I have willnot work with the standard straight talk APN (att.mvno), instead I have to use a different APN (wap.tracfone) which is apparently a new APN that they are using, and my phone willnot activate on the older one, even though that is the APN that was on the activation card. Not sure if one is related to the other.
by any chance did you install a cell tracking software (like avast)?
Maybe it is think your phone got stolen (new sim) and trying to find your location
You my friend are an absolute genius, it was avast.
I have the same issue, but I do not have Avast installed.... How to find out what software is doing it??
Oh wait - it was Qualcomm batteryguru app for snapdragon processors... sorted
I encrypt my external Micro SDCard, simply because in the event I loose my phone, all my photo's and notes are encrypted and not visible to a potential thief... even if my photo's are not sensitive I don't want some maggot scrolling through each one checking them out... it can be a trade off though with having to use the following:
Enabling encryption requires you to use a password lock screen (not swipe, face, pattern or PIN) - it has to be 8 characters including one number
This means that if you're frequently turning the screen on, or have a very short screen timeout, you're going to be constantly having to input the password
If you connect the phone to a computer via USB, the MTP connection won't work until you input the password on the phone
If you remove the SDCard from the phone and put it in an adapter connected to a PC, it seems like it's not recognized at all
I don't enable encryption on my phone though, simply because I use Cerberus to track and remotely lock/erase if need be. It gives me more satisfaction tracing a thief and being in a position to have them arrested than to lock them out of the phone completely... since phone encryption requires a boot-up password before Cerberus can trace.
Never had encryption, sim pin, unlock pin etc.

Damn thats some serious donations you have been sending over to XDA! I'm still waiting for another 4 stars, they are slow!
Back on topic.... I also use SIM PIN Lock to stop maggots from using my phone and cranking my bill through the roof. I hardly reboot my phone so its no biggie for me, plus it offers a nice layer of security.
What formatting is using your external sdcard?
do you know if Exfat is supported?
I want to encrypt my external sdcard, but i need files bigger than 4 GB
*bumping thread*
I need to know a secure approach to encrypt my SD-card using an Samsung SiV i9505 with Android 6.0.1, more specifically using "Optimized Cyanogenmod 13" latest version (2016-11-05) by JDCTeam.
I've tried playin' around a bit with Cryptonite but not with any success :/ (maybe this is outdated?). I've of course googled (no, duckduck.go'ed, another q why) but have'nt found any good guide to this.
I'm no master at Android, but I'm no newbie either, thou have'nt used 6.0.1 (Marshmallow) much!
Please give me an "pretty easy" guide or a hint for a good and secure app, or method, to successfully encrypt my SD-card with a strong encryption like Serpent, AES, etc!
My device is;
Samsung Galaxy SiV i9505 Intl. (jflte) I9505XXUEMKF
Kernel: 3.4.112-B--B-PWR-CORE-AOSP-v1.4
OptimizedCM-13.0-20161105-Stable6
Ver: M4B30X
(can provide more specific logs if needed, give info how)
Best & humble regards,

To make a long story short, I need to turn Mobile Data on without a SIM card. This is a thing the Sprint (and probably Verizon?) Note 3 can do without issue, and I've been using it that way for a year. In my case, it's because of a terrible MVNO that doesn't know SIM cards are a thing, but the same would apply to phones with a bad SIM slot.
The problem is, all these ported ROMs from newer phones treat me like I'm an idiot for trying. Phronesis, Darklord, basically anything TouchWiz demands that I insert a SIM card to turn on any mobile data at all.
With a lot of command-line #&$^ery and some incredibly lucky bugs, I have determined that 3G data will activate and function properly if certain processes die. It works just as well as stock... for about 10 minutes. Then, it not only realizes it's missing its SIM, but makes sure to remember it; killing the process won't make it forget again. But 3G is there. I have proven it's in there, somewhere. The kernel and modem support it.
Meanwhile, the MM Resurrection Remix ROM posted in the Sprint-specific section works perfectly, doesn't even nag me about the lack of a SIM... at the cost of literally everything I want from a Note device. Beautiful ROM, smooth as butter, but not for me.
I've tried flashing different kernels, modems, CSCs. I've tried grabbing various communication packages and configuration from both the stock ROM and RR, with a wide assortment of force-closes as a result. I've been working on this for over a week, and don't see any way forward with what I currently know.
What I seek is a solution, wherein users of a CDMA Note 3 (and other phones, maybe) may use a ROM that normally demands a SIM card, even if their SIM slot is broken or their network is misconfigured. I believe this may be done by outright breaking the SIM check, but again, a bit over my head here. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I have now put many, many more hours into this, and approached the problem from many, many different angles. I've established that the GSM ROMs tend to be missing /system/etc/permissions/android.hardware.telephony.cdma.xml, but of course it couldn't be solved that simply (nor by deleting android.hardware.telephony.gsm.xml).
I'm to the point of staring at the actual source code, and unfortunately all the CDMA capabilities seem to be there. It's definitely stuck in GSM mode; deleting android.hardware.telephony.gsm.xml actually cleared any mention of GSM from the logcat, but I can see that it's still calling functions that are GSM-only. I still have no idea where the switch is that determines that, but I'm about ready to throw money at whoever finds it.
Trying to copy the AOSP telephony and related APKs has so far resulted in failure, unable to even boot far enough to find exactly where.
