Asus ZenFone 2 Back Cover Cracking - ZenFone 2 General

Hi guys!
I recently noticed that the back cover on my ZenFone 2 has started to crack on the corners from the cover being taken off (http://imgur.com/a/xNyXw) after talking to a friend who also owns the ZenFone 2 who said that the same exact thing was happening to them I decided to talk to Asus support about any viable replacement options and unfortunately the only option I was provided with was to RMA the device either by just sending them my phone and having to wait for them to fix it and send it back to me, or the RMA Express option which costs $25.00 (and you have to put a credit card on file with them) and they'll ship you a new phone and you just send them the broken one and you're done. I personally find these options a little unfair as I'm someone who needs their phone and can't really wait a month for my phone to be fixed or afford to pay a $25.00 processing fee to get a new phone sent to me, and I really think that Asus should just be shipping a new back cover to customers who are experiencing this issue, like Apple did with the bottom cover replacement for the MacBook Unibody 2009-2010, and get the customer to ship the cracked cover back to Asus.

EDIT: Oh just a note, I have always been super careful with this phone, and I've only taken the back cover off 2-3 times and always gently. And I've never dropped the phone and it's been in a case since day one.
EDIT 2: I've also posted this on Reddit https://m.reddit.com/r/zenfone2/comments/3oxfpt/zenfone_2_back_cover_cracking/
And the Tek Syndicate forums https://forum.teksyndicate.com/t/asus-zenfone-2-back-cover-cracking/89499

Yeah, the back cover is somewhat flimsy. I remember in Anandtech's review it was severely scratched and chipped from a small drop.
It's pretty weird you can't find spare covers as well. I mean, Microsoft/Nokia sell replacement shells even for their cheap Lumias.

Mine had developed 2 cracks also on opposite corners from removing the back cover. It is super flimsy as I also am so careful removing it. I hooe Asus has those back covers for sale soon.

Mine cracked on the thinnest part of the headphone jack cover

Unfortunately for me I don't live in the EU so getting that to me would be a little difficult, and I couldn't find a North American Asus parts. Though you can supposedly get it from Aliexpress but I've heard the power button doesn't work properly and that it doesn't have NFC. Hoping Asus will just ship a new cover to customers.

They are on ebay. I got a replacement silver one for < $7 USD. I doesn't come with NFC but you can easily transfer from the old cover to the new one.
Red and black go for the same price.
If you want other colours, like Gold, they are as cheap as $12 USD.

The Bad, and the good of ebay purchases.......

Have a little story to tell about being wary of ebay purchases.....
Bought myself an HD2 from ebay. A faulty phone (stuck on windows loading screen), and advertised as such.
The owner advertised it as a software problem he hadnt gotten round to getting fixed after flashing an upgrade directly from HTC, so I figured 'What the hell' may as well give it a go and see if I could get Android running on it.
Paid £160 for it.....
As SOON as the phone arrived (recorded delivery, so the delivery was timed with my signature), I unboxed it and took off the battery cover to pop in the battery.
As soon as I took it off, I noticed that the 'Water damage' sticker AND the 'void' sticker were gone off the 2 screw heads where they normally sit - EU version has a water sticker covering one of the screws and not just under the camera lens where the TMOUS version has one.
Had a closer look at the phone and noticed a few scrapes around the screen edges. Then had a closer look at the screws and noticed that they HAD been removed, and then marked with a felt tip marker to hide the fact that some of the black colour had been worn off through removing. Not ony that, but one of the screws was actually INSIDE the back cover and not accessible from the outside. This thing had DEFINITELY been taken apart.....
Off to paypal I went and filed an action against the seller and linked some pictures I had taken - these were datyed and showed that I had taken them within 15 minutes of signing for the phone. I demanded either a refund and I would return the phone, or a partial refund of £60 and I would keep it.
Within 15 minutes, the seller responded and refunded me £60.... so... faulty phone bought for £100. Now to see if I could fix it......
HSPL 2.0.8, Task 29 and ROM flash later... still the same problem with booting. Popped on MAGLDR, CWM and an Android rom. STILL the same problem. Phone refused to go past the loading screen in windows or the android setup initial screen. Damn
Time to go one step further. Took the phone apart (just popped out the screen and mainboard, didnt bother strripping it right down. Noticed that one of the cables was loose and also that the screw that had been 'under' the case was actually a silver one that was too small and had slid through the hole...... Popped back the loose cable and took out the screw and put the whole thing back together again.
Still the same boot problem. Damn. Seems to be a fault in the phone storage, OR a problem with quickly over heating
Looks like it was going back on ebay to be resold as a faulty phone.
THEN I decided to look for a few other items... found a sheet of 'Void' stickers, and a sheet of 'water damage' stickers off ebay for about £6 delivered, so phoned HTC and discovered that the phone was still under warranty
Waited 2 weeks for the stickers to arrive from Hong Kong.
Popped the stickers on the screws (and replaced the silver screw with a correct one), sent the phone back to HTC and 8 days later received a nicely working HD2.... Warranty replacement.....
The Moral of this story.....
People should be CAREFUL with the purchases they make on Ebay. (and businesses should be careful about what people can get their hands on from ebay)
Hope thats a nice bedtime story for y'all
Nice story.
Thanks)
Nice story! I bought mine for 180€ from a friend 2 months ago. It was in excellent condition, barely used and only tiny scratches in the top right corner.
I thought about buying one of ebay before that as well, but didn't want to take the chance to spend a lot of money on a messed up device.
Tl; dr: story was good, ebay is risky
Awesome post and good advice. I hit the thanks button btw
Boradan my first t9193 was similar.
bought it for 280 bucks off of ebay. said he tried to put android on it, but it would freeze up every time he launched haret. so sold as software broken.
When i got it, it had water damage, and had been taken apart. I was refunded $50.
reflashed everything using the new MAGLDR and it has worked amazing ever since.
i do have a question though for you. since i have a t9193 not a t8585 would the warranty service work in the usa for it? or would i have to send it to Australia?
ps if you find this high jacking just ignore it. i was confirming how ebay can work out.
You will need to send it to Australia.
I had a faulty TMOUS HD2 and HTC UK wouldnt take it in for repair. Insisted I sent it to America. Managed to fix it though
Great story....can you pick 6 numbers for the lottery for me please
I got mine from the market here for £190 shipped to Italy, it was flawless, couldn't even noticed it has ever been used.
Regarding your story, I'm glad at least the seller agreed and gave you £60 back and at the end of the story you got a refurbished HD2 by luck .

I bought my hd2 on Ebay for 390 euros and all was right..the only problem was to unlock the sim ...things done in 5 minutes on http://www.htc-hd2.it/

[Q] did you also get refurbished unit when bought new?

so i decided to buy a nexus 7 and ordered one through google play store, amazingly recieved mine in 2 days, when i recieved box it had 2 seals on each side and one of each was cut open and other was on top as shown clearly in pics attached, well i started using it, and next day i opened the back of tab and to my surprise the seal sticker on the screws were tempered already as the screwdrver had been used to opem the screws, that really made me feel screwed, i paid for a brand new unit and what i got is a refurbished unit, wtf google i called them and talked to representative when i told him about seals on screws he put me on hold for good 10 minutes and came back telling me i talked to my 2 supervisors and they say we do not ship refurbished unit we even send replacement units in warrenty as new not refurbished then i insisted again and he put me on hold again came back again telling me i talked to my supervisor and he told me that opening back voids the warrenty i said it pops off i did not unscrew anything he said it still voids warrenty i said ok lets just forget about if i popped back off say i id not do that please explain me the 2 seals on box one of which is cut open, then he ws like it might have been opened to check the screen issues we had in past, i was like no im not satisfied jjust gimme email address so i can send you pics and show you what i am trying to tell you, so he sent me email and i sent him these pics and waiting to see what they say. only reason im pissed is that i paid full price for a brand new unit and what i get is a refurbished unit wtf.. lets see what happens now, anyone else experienced same?
for some people it doesnt matter, but for me it is a concern...
I agree with you. You paid for a new N7 not a refurbished one! If I got that unit, it would have gone straight back. To start with, it has been sent back for a reason, more than likely screen lift. Possibly other faults with it.
I did read somewhere on here that open the back does not void the warranty because it's meant to be easily accessible, as long as you don't mess around with any of the internals.
Even if they don't want to replace it, you should at least get some money off. It's not your fault that someone has tightened the screws up......
Send it back....

Send it back and get one from a store. Mines was a C80 batch and had a different box (easy to open) with only one seal:
First thing I checked was to make sure the seal is intact, before I purchased the tablet.
Also, why did you had to tell them about screws and other things? The discussion should of stopped right at the multiple scotch tapes. Personally, I would've not opened the box. Now, they will probably charge you a stocking fee because of that or not even refund it saying that you opened the case heh. They are in panic mode due to fairly high number of returned tablets, so I guess they don't like to hear "I want an exchange/refund."
Yes, they do rework the affected units and resell them as new. If you're not happy then return it. The latest one I bought was obviously a rework since it had fingerprints all over but since it didn't have, bad pixels, etc. I kept it.
Yes, I get those too. The seal is different, when I peel it off I can clearly see the original transparent seal under it. Opened the back cover, warranty sticker on the screw is there untouch. Also, there's some finger print mark on the copper shield.
If this is reworked unit then I can say they still failed at it because mine has obvious screen lift. I fixed the screen with super glue and all is fine. But got to say that even their rework team is not competent enough. Wtf Asus?

So let me get this straight, you're complaining about some box and tape or seals but have a perfectly good N7 with no flaws or screen lift? Just be happy you have a good until.

That's exactly what I'm saying.
They can't resell used products and label them as new. That's a huge FTC violation. The reason they repackaged them is to attempt to fix the screen lift, whether it worked or not, you decide, but if you're wondering. Then that's why.

well the most ridiculous art is that after waiting for 2 days to hear back from google i contacted them again today and as soon as i started that i emailed you 2 days ago and have not heard back since, he was like yes i see you sent email and just 5 minutes ago your mail was picked and being worked on so just give it some time and you will see response i said ok fine ill give it 24 more hours, lets see what they say, i checked my unit is c60 so i definitely recieved an old reworked unit after paying full brand new price.... i definitely want a replacement unit mr.google and this time you better send me a new unit... i did read about screen lifts and then noticed a little screen lift on left side of screen it is lifted up from the frame but the right side is fine, i ushed it and it went back in but after an hour or so its back up... so this definitely is a reworked unit which was a total fail...

Nexus 6 Replacement by Motorola

Hello,
I just wanted to share my experience that I had with Motorola regarding replacement of my Nexus 6.
So, I have had my Nexus 6 for a little over a month. (Just long enough to not be able to return it) I have noticed screen "burn in" really bad where the navigation bar and status bar are located. So bad that I can see a "ghost" of my navigation and status bar icons when watching videos on YouTube. I tried to prevent it, keeping brightness down and display timeout on 30 seconds. Apparently I received a very poor quality display.
Anyways, I contacted Motorola about this and I wanted to share their return policy and procedures. Motorola will give you two options.
Option One: "Standard Replacement Service" They will email you a return shipping label. The label is standard FedEx Ground. You then use the label to return your defective Nexus 6 to them. Once they receive it, they will ship you a "Like New" device within 5 business days.
Option Two: "Premium Replacement Service" They will ship you a Brand New Nexus 6 via FedEx 2nd Day Air. Included in the package will be a return shipping label to return the defective Nexus 6. This option has a service charge of $24.99 AND they require you to provide them with a credit card, which they issue a security hold on in the amount of $500.00.
I originally went with option one yesterday, but then I decided against it and called back right away this morning to cancel the RMA and created a new RMA and went with option two. I really didn't want to go without my phone for two weeks.
I found out that the only thing not covered under warranty "repair" is liquid / extreme moisture. The Nexus 6 one year warranty covers repair / replacement of damaged devices! If your Nexus 6 is out of the one year warranty, a $175 fee is charged for malfunctioning or damage. (Still a good deal in my opinion)

Not all of your info is accurate. I've had a Nexus 6 I purchased through Sprint in April, and about two months ago I dropped it causing the screen to shatter. There was also a dent in the upper left corner and for reasons I couldn't figure out the micro USB port ceased to work.
Naturally, I checked out the repair service for Motorola and found that my phone was still within the one year limited warranty period. I sent my phone in with the bootloader unlocked, rooted, running XtraSmooth MM preview using option one as you described above and switched to using a Verizon GS5 while I waited. 4 days later I received a brand new replacement Nexus 6 and wasn't charged anything for my damaged phone nor denied service due to software modifications.
It was incredibly quick and hassle free, and I would definitely give their repair service a 5/5 stars for quality service and speed.
Now, if your phone is older than a year you WILL have to pay a fee for repairs. However, if your phone is relatively new you can easily claim warranty twice within that first year.
Also, I've never experienced this burn in people talk about on either of my devices so if they claim it's been rectified, it probably has.

They repaired (replaced) your broken device for free? That is amazing! The reps I talked to advised me it was $175 for damage repair. (Because they just replace it I guess) So your saying you get 2 claims during the one year warranty for damage even?
Did Google still own Motorola when you sent your phone in?

I sent it in last month. Yeah, it was free, and you're supposed to have two free claims within your first year. I've only used one so I have no proof of that. Maybe I got lucky and got a nice technician.

No, you are correct! I seem to have been miss informed, kinda. I just checked Nexus 6 warranty info @ Motorola.com.
The ONLY thing excluded from warranty "repair" is liquid damage / extreme moisture damage. If you have owned your Nexus 6 for longer than one year, THEN the $175 fee is charged for a malfunctioning or damaged device. People need to know this! I wonder how many people replaced their own displays that they broke, tossed out, sold for parts, etc their damaged Nexus 6's not knowing that Motorola would have repaired it for free had they just sent it in for free.
I am glad I now know this! Not to mention, I will have proof of "purchase" for my Nexus 6 because they are shipping me the new device. So I have a year from today pretty much.
Thank you for posting! I would have never looked and been misguided by not one, but two reps!
Also, I did a full wipe, stock flash, bootloader locked my device just to be safe. I mean, they are holding $500 hostage on my credit card. lol. I'm not taking any chances!
"Burn in" is covered but its pointless. Amoleds will "burn in" except if hide the softkeys. Dealing with "burn in" was better than unknowns of refurb.
Shattered screens are not covered by warranty. They charge $175 whether in or out of warranty.

That is what I would assume, but reading the warranty guidelines the only thing stated as not being covered is liquid damage.

Not saying you're wrong, but feel free to tell that to my no-charge busted screen warranty claim.
Most manufacturers have a one year limited warranty, and you don't have to provide proof of purchase unless asked. Usually the date you bought the device and where you bought it will suffice. I got my girlfriend's S5 fixed for free by Samsung at the same time my Nexus 6 was replaced. She dropped it and busted the LCD. Warranty covered it too.
I wanted to chime in with my recent experience. Im still waiting on my replacement (should be today). My nexus 6 was having the split screen issue no matter what rom or kernel I was running and the USB port was really loose (was interfering with android auto). I went with option 2 and they told me they are sending a like new not brand new.

Update....so gotta give Motorola support props. I had also joked that they could send me an white 64GB (mine was 32gb blue) and they said they can't do that. Told him no problem. Well, to my surprise, they sent me a brand new white 64gb. The box was still factory sealed and includes a brand new charger and cable. Lucky Me!

That is awesome! Congrats on that! Now you have my hopes up... lol. I asked if I could receive a Cloud White instead of Midnight Blue. He advised me that he could not do that but that he would notate my RMA that I requested a Cloud White instead so it would be up to the warehouse if they wanted to make an exception. I have been thinking about getting a cloud white replacement housing and back. I found a site that sells true oem parts and it would cost me $40.00 all said and done. But it would be awesome if they just sent me a Cloud White!
Also, everyone that I have heard of that has had their Nexus 6 replaced by Motorola in the last few months has received a factory sealed device in retail packaging with the original retail accessories. I seriously don't think that they are refurbished devices. I have or know people who have received refurbished electronics from warranty claims before such as Blu Ray players, computer components, phones, tablets, etc. (I'm the family tech) They seem to usually be in unmarked packaging, and just the unit itself with no accessories.
I could be wrong but I can't see a company packing refurbs in retail packaging, sealed with all of the normal included accessories.
I helped my uncle with his iPhone 5 in the past and a LG Tablet. We sent them both in for warranty repair and he received refurbs back in non-retail packaging with no accessories. (They had different serial numbers so I doubt they were repaired. Sprint even wanted to charge him $35 for activation on the iPhone 5. lol)

I wasn't so lucky. I received my replacement Nexus 6 today. It was in a moto care box. The phone itself in the box was in a bubble wrap sleeve. Everyone I have heard of got a new in retail box replacement, but not me! lol. The phone did have the factory plastic thing on the screen, and after VERY close examination of the device there is not so much as a tiny knick or scratch or a single spec of dust in the speaker grills. I'm not sure what to make of it. Either the rep I talked to lied to me, or they have new devices that they issue in non-retail packaging.
Anyone receive their replacement like this?

I have received one each way. One in retail package, new sealed box, and another that was in bubblewrap sleeve with plastic on it. I'm betting that the bubble wrapped one is probably a refurb, but if it is, mine was flawless as well, so they probably tore it apart, put a new screen, back/side casing and speaker grill set in it. There are a few other companies I've gotten refurbs from over the years that were this good, but not many.
Well, never mind I guess. I thought it looked like a brand new device but it clearly is not. The display is worse than the one I was replacing. It looks like this is going to be a fun ride. I would literally rather keep the one I have than the one they sent me... It has worse burn in on the nav bar than mine did. Also, there is a dark hue on I would say 1/4 of the bottom of the display. As if it is not as bright as the rest.
This is definitely going back to Motorola! I am going to call them now.

Oh I see. I hate refurbished replacements. I don't know why, and I know they "inspect" them but I just hate the idea of it I guess. I mean, mine looked brand spanking new but judging by the serious nav bar burn in and how the bottom 1/4 of the display was darker, almost pinkish hue to it, the display was definitely from a used unit.
I was just on the phone with Motorola for over an hour. I explained to a supervisor in the escalations department how I paid the $24.99 and let them hold $500+ dollars on my credit card, only to receive a worse device than the one I originally had. So, he said that in order for him to send another replacement immediately that he would have to issue another $500 security hold. BUT, when he created my RMA he set it up so that I will be receiving a Brand New, 64GB Cloud White. I originally had a 32GB Midnight Blue! This is awesome! I went from super frustrated to super happy. lol. Motorola definitely has some of the better customer service that I have experienced to say the least. He offered the 64GB upgrade for the inconvenience, which I told him I greatly appreciated but I would love if he could send me a cloud white version as well.
I have a minor screen issue, get tearing like once a month on some kernels, but Couple times a day on others. Scarred to warranty because everything else is great.
i just got off the phone with motorola because of deep scratches and i've started to notice after occasional reboots, my SIM card will not read. i'll have to pull it and re-insert it 3-4 times until it actually picks up. i've tried cleaning the SIM slot with a soft bristled toothbrush several times but still happening. so according to motorola, nevermind the SIM problem, if there's a scratch on the screen i'll have to pay $175 plus taxes. for those looking for the warranty guidelines, here you go:

Damn! The person who posted about sending his in damaged got extremely lucky! So they told you that if it even had a scratch on it that you would have to pay $175 to have it replaced?

Sad day, shattered screen. Anyone replaced one yet?

Today was a sad day for me. I was working with cables under my desk and my phone was next to me. An object fell off the desk and its corner landed right on my screen. The picture says it all.
Has anyone had to get their screen replaced? Did you go through LeEco support? I'm curious what it is going to cost and what the turn-around looks like. I've contacted support and I'm waiting to hear back.
Thanks!
I contacted support to see if there is a way to buy official screen replacements. They offered me a repair service, I had to pay for the shipping (both ways), but they couldnt gave me a price for the repair, they had to see fthe damage first. Finally I bought a screen replacement from aliexpress, 89 dlls with "fast" shipping. It should be delivered next monday.

Great for you. I told them I dropped the phone maybe thats why they have to charge me. Look at their answer:
"Regarding to your concern about the your cracked screen, as you mentioned earlier that you dropped your phone accidentally, we are sorry to say that we cater only for those issue with manufacturer defects. Since you dropped your it is automatically void it warranty. Please mind that you will charge on the repair service that we provided. "
For me the shipping was about 50 dlls, plus the repair fee, wich they did not how much it could be, I calculated around 120 dlls total. Thats why I bought a replacement from China.

What you wrote and what you have recived?
hi, normally it cost 100-120 dollrs to replace a screen, recently I replace my LG G4 for about $100.
For LePro3 it's still perfect, just need to be extra careful with phone I think, good luck.

I'm going to be sending it in tomorrow. I received a phone call from LeEco yesterday verifying my contact info and address. I'll post back more details once the device is repaired.
Update: LeEco had me send the device to Irving, TX for repair. It arrived at their service center yesterday, was repaired and shipped back out all in the same day. Expecting it Monday!

They wanted me to ship with FedEx. The cost was about $14 for 2 day business, which included insurance for $400. The package weighed 1.5lbs.
Originally they had asked for me to print a return label, however that isn't possible with FedEx (afaik) because you have to specify a shipping date. I was expecting an email from them, but it looks like they ended up covering the return shipping cost.
I do have to say that the communication is a little lacking from LeEco. The only reason I know it was sent yesterday is because of how I have my FedEx account setup. It notifies me when packages are sent to my address. I never received any confirmation that it was received, had been processed, or that it was even shipped back. Not a huge deal since the turn was ridiculously quick.

wow that is a great price!
I remember checking some prices to ship from El Paso, Texas to I believe it was Irving, Texas, it was around 60 dlls including a return label. Let me know when you recieve your phone to see the how they did it! I´ll will be replaceing myseñf the screen this weekend
I got the phone back today. It is as good as new. It is as if I never shattered the screen! LeEco FTW .
Mine broke too. Kind of random because it broke right down the center without warning. I shipped it to Irving via USPS with Insurance. Shipped it flat rate in a padded mailer with the phone inside a prepaid USPS flat rate box inside. $6.80 each way to ship out and back.
I think they default to saying use UPS and FedEx because that have those mailers in house and also because they are well known in the business world. Figured if I shipped them a box inside a box for USPS they'd ship it back. Will let you all know how it turns out.

I just replaced mine with an lcd from AliExpress. To be honest it looks slightly better!
One more thing, the pre applied screen protector should be a tempered glass?? I had to remove it before removing the lcd and it did not felt like a tempered glass, more like a high quality plastic protector

No it is not tempered glass. That is a rumor spawned by ignorance.
How easy was it to replace? Did you have to use a heat gun to remove it from the device?

Yes I needed a heat gun, I used a regular hair heat gun. It was hard because of the shattered parts of the screen had to be removed carefully and piece by piece, the rest of the screen came out easy.

Cracked the back of my S8+ yesterday!

So yesterday while driving home, I looked over at my phone that was sitting on the passenger seat and noticed the back was cracked. I have no idea how it happened, since the phone was not dropped, and I am very careful with it. It is in a case as well. The main damage is right where the back glass meets the camera glass. Not sure if this is a weak spot. The break spiderwebbed across the entire back. I called Samsung and they sent me a label to ship it in for repair. I do not have any type of insurance on the phone. I thought it was pretty cool of them to pay for the shipping to have the repair done. I was quoted a price of $70.31 for the replacement of the back glass. I feel like this is an odd price. I sent it in this morning and will have to wait and see what they say. I think this phone is even more fragile than it looks. I will update once they contact me.
I'm not sure how I'd be able to tell if mine was cracked, with the case on... after all, the case is covering it. Do you have a clear case?

The case I had on yesterday has one large cutout on the back so I was able to see it. You are right, with other case that have individual cutouts, I would not be able to tell it was cracked.
The charge probably includes labor cost which would be the bulk of the price.
So I got an email yesterday from Samsung, the cost was correct at 70.31. Pretty good considering they pay for shipping both ways. Now I just have to wait for the repair to get done, and the phone shipped back.
