Moto X Pure or AT&T LG G4 - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm debating on what phone to go with, AT&T LG G4 or Moto X pure. I would like to have root and a custom rom along with keeping my mini sd card.
What are the pros and cons with the Moto Pure?
Which one would you choose and why?

For me the only thing I like the G4 is the Camera, the rest is nahh... I have Moto X Pure now and I'm loving it. Btw, not to mention G4s very ugly UI (my opinion).
I would suggest to do a test drive on the phone, if you feel you like it and provide almost all your needs on a daily basis (SMS, calls, skype, camera & etc), you go to which one fits.

I would personally pick the Moto X pure (partly because its what i own).
Moto X pure Pros:
Unlocked- your not stuck with AT&T if you get the pure because it also works on just about all US carriers.
Almost Pure Android- Aside from the couple of additions from Motorola this phone as close to a nexus without it being one.
Big 5.7in QHD Display- it has a very nice 2560x1440( 4x 720p HD) display crammed into 5.7in so its plenty sharp.
MicroSD Card slot- Supports up to 128gb MicroSD cards (official max MicroSD card capacity)
Stereo Front facing speakers- true stereo speakers that face you and get plenty loud.
Customization- Moto maker, colors, woods, leathers, and bamboo (EG. grass not wood) plus accents choices and more. lets you finally get a phone that's a color you want...Mostly.
CHEAP, sort of- At $399 for a base model 16gb, its a great value! $449 for the 32gb and $499 for the 64gb versions. Add $25 if you want a wood (or bamboo) or leather back. Rear engravings don't cost extra.
TURBO CHARGER- comes with a 25w Motorola Turbo charger that can bring your phone from dead to full in about an hour and 15 mins. great when you need a quick top off while you change for a night out after work!
Moto X Pure Cons:
Its BIG- at 5.7in, even with the very slim bezels its still a big phone, not easy to use one handed if you have small hands.
Battery life- the big 3000mah battery is offset with that big QHD display so its not going to be great, just average.
Almost pure Android- you wont be getting any of the neat features that LG bakes into there version of android like mini apps, dual apps, the're AMAZING camera app.
LG G4 Pros:
5.5in QHD Display- Not as big as the moto X pure but still a great, sharp display but a bit easier to manage than the bigger Moto X Pure.
Swappable battery- battery go dead while out and about? just pop in a fresh 3000mah power cell from the bag and your back in business!
LG tweaks- Dual apps, IR blaster, great camera software customizble quick settings. all good features Stock android doesn't have...yet.
MicroSD card support- I don't think I need to explain this one again.
LG G4 Cons:
Locked phone- Cant easily leave AT&T and take the phone with you. Might be able to use on T-Mobile but you out of luck if you want to move to sprint or Verizon.
LG tweaks- LG has useful additions but that also means it could take longer to get updates to newer versions of android because they have to modify android just to put those cool tweaks in there.
Single rear speaker- It might get loud but its still just one and its still facing away from you.
Price?- The 32gb LG G4 with plastic back is $135 more than the 32gb Moto X pure plastic(rubber?). if you go with leather on the LG G4 its $150 more than a 32gb Moto X Pure with leather (or wood/bamboo)
Those are all of the main pros and cons to each phone that I can think off right now. I used to have the LG G3 before and my buddy let me play with his LG G4 and its not all that different from the G3 before it so thats where some of my information is based off of for the LG G4.
Prices showen are from Motorolas website and AT&T website for LG G4 prices.
Hope this helps.

If you're looking for develoment, go with the MXP. The G4 has little to no development. There are rumors that a bootloader unlock is coming, but it's been so long now, that I think potential developers have moved on.

On my G4 I loved the screen and camera. That's it, the moto x is better in every way besides camera and screen. I really miss the deep blacks on the G4. The cameras on the moto x are pretty close so I don't miss the camera much. Just the G4 is better at low light but it's not a big deal. The moto x is faster, cleaner, smoother, faster updates, better build quality, bigger screen, front facing speakers

The only pros for g4 are removable battery (...but my MXP gets better battery life and turbocharging speed makes up for lack of removable battery) and lowlight/manual camera. There is pretty much no other area that the G4 outshines the MXP.

I have to disagree, as I stated above the screen out shines the MXP. Darker and vivid almost like a IPS LCD panel and AMOLED panel had a baby. MXP might be a tad brighter. But the software is far better on the MXP

Having had both (although I had the T-Mobile G4) I'd have to say the get the X. Both are great, but for me I prefer stock Android. If you do opt for the G4 I'd recommend that you try and score the international version ... Having gone from the Nexus 6 to the G4 and now to the MXPE I am done with carrier devices! So much bloat and unnecessary interference ...

couldn't agree more, in fact in some places the unlocked version is cheaper than the AT&T version (G4) and they have the same LTE bands, for example when I owned the G4 it had the touch issues, the international one got an update that fixed it, it took months for the AT&T version to get it (literately just a couple days ago). Don't do that to yourself. Never again AT&T, never again
Not to mention locked bootloader....

Looks like the Moto X may be a keeper with a 5.2" screen.
Looks very pleasant. Concerned a little bit about the battery size though
Same about the battery, big concern if this thing cant last a whole day. Should be at least a 2700mAh battery with a screen over 5 inches. Unless moto made some big changes to background software for the battery (and the L preview's project volte being a battery saver), I might just wait and see.
No . I currently own the LG G2 (having had a Moto X 2013 before). I liked how compact the old moto x was and have been disappointed with this year's flagships (HTC, LG, Samsung) for going larger but not superpowered relative to the LG G2 and Nexus 5.
The X2 is bigger in every dimension compared to the G2 (and I found that 2.8" width was my breaking point where I no longer like holding phones... why I downgraded from the LG G3 to LG G2) with a smaller battery and similiar power. The AMOLED screen will be great for battery life with notifications. The software updates seem really good and leave me more confident that post-Google Motorola won't fall off a cliff. The speakers aren't my thing. The additional mics aren't either (as I never leave my phone far from me in a crowded room. The camera looks very good as it seems like they fixed a weak area of
I think I'll be targeting slightly smaller phones for now (in the pre-SD805 days). On my fall list are the Galaxy Alpha, Sony's Z3 Compact and the Xioami Mi4.
i'm very interested in seeing the actual performance of this phone. i have high hopes for the camera and additional functionality they're claiming. all-in-all i'll have to hold it before i make my decision.
Currently a Note 2 user, I was pleased to see the size increase on the Moto X. I'm concerned abotu the battery, though. Right now I'm torn between the Note 4, LG G3, Moto X, and Nexus 6/X.

According to Joshua from Anandtech even though the Moto X is the same in dimensions to the S5, the Moto X is still much easier to use with one hand because of its design and is similar to use with one hand to LG G2. So you should give it a try, maybe you'll like the size.
Maybe?
Very disappointed to see the increased size, though it was inevitable.. I have been looking forward to this phone for months because of the innovation and engineering that went into the original moto x. Using separate processing elements for different parts of the phone is, I think, the absolute key to the battery life/functionality equation. I've been waiting for a company to split the UI and external features (screen, mics, cameras, etc..) off from the core phone functionality to save juice for a long time. When the screen is off, there should be little need to run the main processor, and therefore it should be kinder to its battery. I do need to know if this unit will have a replaceable battery, unfortunately its a complete no-go for me if it doesn't..
Hoping for the best!:good:

Thanks that's useful to hear as that's quite a key requirement for me with a phone.
I was thinking about replacing my rooted GS4 with this one but I wonder whats coming down the pipe from the Nexus and LG
If it comes to Sprint, I will most likely get it.

I like the size increase. I would rather it stayed at 5 inch screen instead of 5.2 but the battery size should have been bumped to 2600. Even if they are going to release a Moto Maxx version with a 3000 battery. Not sure if I will get this now or wait until the Nexus X before I ditch my VZW unlimited for greener pastures.
let us not forget about this filing:
http://www.droid-life.com/2014/07/30/moto-maxx-trademarked-by-motorola-for-new-phone/
seems like the new X might be worth the additional wait. what was the turnaround on features for the X? AT&T had exclusivity until summer '12? Then other carriers got the "plain" variants, followed by MotoMaker almost two months later. Wood backs didn't arrive for... another two months?
if there were a bigger (read: thicker) battery option for the X in the works, are we looking at Jan release?

I'll probably wait to see what the next nexus phone is and then make a decision. Hopefully by then, there will be more clarification on what the Moto maXx is . I'd really like a 2014 Moto X with a larger capacity battery. For me that's the only thing it's really missing.
I don't get the battery size concern. I've never once worried about my moto x's battery running out by the end of the day. Motorola knows what they are doing.
the new X is a good 1-2mm thinner than the old one at the edges. i'd say there's room for a 4000mAh battery.

That's great news for you then.
Way too big for my taste, and I've become a big Moto fan since owning the X. What ever happened to all that research done to come up with the original X being the perfect size? Hope they do a blow out sale on the original X and I'll pick up a spare if the price is good. I understand the trend towards bigger phones, but all the Android manufacturers leaving behind high spec more compact models is VERY disappointing.

Still the best phone?

So...after 4 months with the Verizon version, I'm making what I call a "lateral"transfer to the LG G2. Specs are becoming moot. The G2 offers a lot, the battery being a big factor.
Did anyone else let go of there Moto X 2014?

I'll never let go of the Moto X, best phone ever made. I always sell my old devices to pay for my new ones, but that's not gonna happen this time around. This bad boy is going in the museum when I upgrade.
A friend just got the G3 as there was some issue getting the Moto X (corporate account). It's a great phone, but I wasn't a big fan of their software overlays. Plus cell radio quality is a big factor for me and the Moto X has better radio/antenna system. Camera on LG is noticeably better, but still not good enough if it is low light and something I really care about. Nice that it has removable battery and SD card, but have really never needed either.
And I do like the Moto X add ons... if they'd only get 'Attentive Display' working on Lollipop!
I'm finding that the battery isn't holding up long term.I need more. It's great for what it does, but it's a legitimate step back. It's rather disappointing.

Attentive display seems to be working quite well in the newest lollipop build (5.0.1) that was just released for Telus in Canada.

Good to hear. Hopefully we'll get that in the US soon.
Its the best phone for who dont have an att branded device. I cant unlock it and dont have lollipop.. Next time i will pay more for a pure.
The moto x series is really a breakthrough, this phone is (the) smartphone, I spent an hour or two receiving and responding to messages and calls without touching it not to mention other genius features which are hardware dependent.
Cons: no sd card and no easily removable battery
Pro: everything else
A very nice phone
The battery life is really bad, and has gotten worst. Even with Lollipop, which made it better, I'm not happy. As much as I love the speed of the phone, the battery is killing me hard! The G2 will give me near similar speed with much better battery, not to mention greater storage. This may be on Swappa soon...
I went from a nexus 5 to a G3 to now the moto X² PE and won't give this up unless something crazy comes out or the X³ arrives.
I have not had any battery issues with this phone as I consistently get 4.5 hrs SOT with 12+ hours total. I will say that the camera on the G3 was much better, but the moto X isn't horrible. And the hands free/voice actions with this phone are second to none.
That's just my humble opinion though.
As someone on Verizon, this phone is BY FAR the best available. No bloatware other than AcDisplay and some nice Moto things that make the phone better. Coming from a GS3 and a Galaxy Nexus (switched after my GS3 cracked), this phone is a god when it comes to battery life. I consistently get three, if not four hours of SoT per day. This phone already has lollipop and had it before some Nexus devices got it, and some flagships still don't have it, let alone on Verizon. The only thing not so good is the camera, but it gets the job done fine as long as there's good lighting. If I had the choice (unlocked cell service), I would still choose the OnePlus One, but I didn't have a choice.

I'm on Verizon, and you must not have used a G3 or the Turbo at all. The LG skin is light (I come from Samsung) and the Turbo is the X beefed up.

The Turbo looks great on paper, but the actual device is only so-so. I spent a good deal of time with one and walked away unimpressed. The X has FAR better build quality, is as fast if not faster (no QHD screen to waste resources on) and was generally smoother. Sure the turbo has better battery life, but my X easily lasts through the day and then some so it's a non-issue. The G3 is ugly, the skin is still pretty bad, and it is underpowered for the screen it has. Aside from the N5, everything LG puts out is just meh. People need to stop looking at only specs, they don't matter nearly as much as they used to. That said, the X still provides the best user experience out of any phone on the market, and that is what's important.

My feelings exactly. I really, really didn't like how the Turbo was built and even though the G3 build in my opinion is sleek, it's nothing special compared to the X. I've never used either phone as a daily driver, so I may not be the best one to judge it, but the Moto X is blazing fast with "good enough" features that work for me as a user who just wants to get through the day being able to use features like Google Now, something I was never able to keep on with my previous phones. The experience of the X is perfect for an everyday user, like most people are, and in my opinion that's what matters most in a phone. Again, I may have bias as this is my only phone I have been using.

Well, from the beginning of time until now, numbers haven't lied. That's not up for debate. But with user experience..I have to install nova launcher on the X because stock is lacking. The G2 (which I'm going to) offers equal speed. A smaller os, better battery and excellent build all while being a year older. The X while being customizable is just not enough for a power user.

I never said numbers lie, but they aren't always representative of the actual experience that the phone provides. If numbers meant everything, than the iPhone would have the worst battery life and performance of any smartphone out there, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. The same applies to the X. While the Turbo has better numbers, the X has the better UX. I don't see how the X isn't enough for a power user, I'm the very definition of a power user and it is pretty much everything I can ask for in a smartphone, with storage being the sole exception. Who cares if you have to put Nova launcher on it? That has no bearing on the quality of the phone itself. At least it doesn't have a nasty UI like the G2 does, even Nova cant save it from LG's hideous software, not to mention the plastic fantastic build. But everybody is entitled to their own opinion. If you think the G2 will serve your needs better, than that's wonderful. For me, the X is where its at.
hello guys ! i wanna upgrade to new device
and i'm confused between nexus 5 and moto x(2014) ?
i personally like pure vanilla aosp and this both have almost same though moto has some modification i don't think it will impact badly on performance ( does it? )
i love N5's fast update smooth performance even with some hardware compromises
but on other has moto x have better SD801 , and GUP freq 578 (vs 450 on N5) { will gaming performance be better ? } which in theory make it batter performance so if any anyone here can tell it's really an upgrade or i won't feel anything better
finally i like amoled but read somewhere that amoled pannel on moto x is worst qauily that samsung can make (really ?!!) , othere thing about camera ppl says it's 13MP is not as good as 8MP of N5 !! ( is it right ? ) and moto don't have notification led & OIS ( while taking pictures only does it matter ? )
so need your view should i go for moto X of stick again with relibale N5 ? will moto x be really upgrade ?
and how's lollipop on moto X ? ( i really like lollipop so hoping bugfree )
it will be really helpful if you can answer red marked questions

old generation phone vs new one. I really have no doubt which one to buy between 2 candidates.
maybe take a look to lg products or htc but don't make a step into the past.

I have and use both of those phones regularly and while the N5 is still a beast of a phone, the Moto X is easily the better of the two. The software mods that Motorola has done don't affect performance at all, and actually go a long way to making the Moto X what it is. Moto Display and Moto Voice are game changers. Gaming performance is great on both devices but slightly better on the Moto X. I can't say anything about lollipop because I don't like it at all and am keeping all my devices on KitKat indefinitely. If you get the X, which you should, make sure you buy the Pure Edition or at least one that's not branded by a carrier who doesn't allow bootloader unlocking. You need that unlockable bootloader in order to be able to root the phone.

Moto X Pure or HTC M9

I know as soon as you read the title, you're probably thinking I'm crazy. Hear me out. I purchased the Moto X Pure 2015 as a 'backup device' because of it being capable of any major carrier in the States and it being nearly stock Android. I come from a long line of HTC phones and miss my M7 dearly.
I purchased the Pure for $520 bucks - customized leather back with 64GB storage. I recently went to Best Buy and picked up two sealed M9's for $199 each off contract on "clearance". Best Buy manager claims they were 'high risk inventory' and needed to be sold to get rid of them since AT&T now has kiosks in most all stores. A steal in my opinion! Was thinking about selling my X Pure for maybe $400??, selling one of the HTC's for $300 and pocketing the other M9. Does anyone have any valuable input on if the software has helped overcome the Qualcomm 810 SoC, or if I should just sell both M9's and keep the X Pure? Specs wise these phones are very close (even with the thermal throttling of the 810). If I S-off and unlock the M9's bootloader I can be on pure stock android 6.0 as well.
I think the biggest thing here for me is the physical size of the Moto X I just can't 'pocket' and I loved the DAC that was in the M9. That DAC with Viper4Android was an unbeatable combo!
For reference, my daily driver is a 128gb S6 unlocked with a Dragonfly v2 USB DAC I use with an OTG cable and my Westone 4R's.
Well hands down the moto x isnthe better fone... Quality or otherwise... But i get what ur saying.... A smart person would sell the moto x bc its not worth the 200 dollars more...i myself could nvr afford the motox x but that to me is best fone on the market bc of build quality and how it feels in the hand... My buddy had a s6 and he didnt like it to i practically begged him to take the moto x style... And he cant believe the difference in 2 android phone!! He loves it and im jealous!!! Also remember m9 has heat issues...
if you want solid build, superb headset support premium looks and fast (its faster then moto x i have both) and it heats on heavy gaming not on regular use..
go for moto x for size, camera batter display and speaker and faster updates go for moto x.

Which is a better smartphone OP2 or Moto X Style?

Hey friends I would like to know which smartphone is better compared to battery life, camera, updates and over all performance and why?,
If you plan on unlocking the bootloader, but want to keep the factory warranty get the OPT. If you don't care about the warranty or you don't plan on unlocking the bootloader, then get the Moto X Style. I personally have the OPT, but that was just because of my great experience with the OPO. I was rather disappointed though. If I could do it all over again, I would have gotten the Nexus 6P or the Moto X Style.
I've been having some random freezing on my OPT. Mainly when pulling down the notification drawer. Pretty annoying to me, especially when my OPO still runs like a dream! OxygenOS isn't mature enough to be a widely used daily driver yet IMO.

Okay.. Well lemme ask you something. If we unlock the bootloader in Moto X and then if we lock it back, don't you think we can get the warranty...? Something like we usually do in old days.

I wouldn't count on that solution. You might could consider getting something like a 3rd party accidental warranty. That should keep it covered even if you unlock the bootloader.

They're both very good. Pretty much interchangeable. After owning the op2 for about 5 months now I can't express enough how terribly I want a moto x. I've had quite a few problems with this phone, if you don't plan on rooting than the moto x is the easy winner

I got one more phone which I really looking forward - LG G4
Had the Moto X Style before and like the OPT more.
I have OPT. I rooted it, installed a bunch of xposed modules and whatnot. Never had any significant problems with it. Performance (antutu score is way better than Moto X) and battery life are great (GSam reports 5:45 SOT). Also consider the fact that a 64GB Moto X costs at least $100 more than OPT. There only two factors where Moto X excels: quick charging and screen resolution.

Screen resolution is debatable, less battery, less performance and working on adreno 418... That's a choice, not a pro, personally i love that Oneplus 2 has a FullHD display and not a QHD, i could bought LG G4, Moto x pure, or whatever 500uds or less. I decided Oneplus 2 and im very happy with my decisión. Thanks god i didnt belive the overheating rumors, they are exagerated, my nexus 5 got hotter.

I was between the same devices. My decisión was LG G4 or Oneplus 2. Moto X it was my third choice.
I choose the op2 because of this:
-Full HD screen : more battery and less GPU demanding
-SoC: 810 vs 808. That means ram lpddr4 vs lpddr3, adreno 418 (qHD) vs adreno 430 (FHD).
About heating, because of the rumors oneplus throttle the devices too fast, if you edited the thermal file with boeffla kernel you could have awesome performance, for more info about throttle pm me.
-Fingerprint scanner.
-XDA community, not too much for no but it will grow up. Oneplus is contacting devs from XDA, that must be a good thing.
-Capacitive buttons, so it does not take space from the screen
-Alert slider is useful, but lg g4 volume buttons are very nice too.
-4gb vs 3gb, its not a real life difference but maybe it will be.
EDIT:- Better battery life. 3300mah vs 3000mah, also fhd vs qhd must make a difference.
About nfc, for almost 2 years i never use it on my nexus 5, so its not a problem for me.
Hope you can decide for the best, come with us :fingers-crossed:

I heard a lot about it
Me too, I've been wavering between OP2 and X Style for 1 month, view all youtube videos about those phones, borrow my friends'
Then OP2 was my final decision, and I don't regret about it
There's no better phones over others, just this phone is suitable for you than the others
In details:
OP2 vs X Style
Screen: FullHD 5.5" is enough
RAM: 4GB vs 3GB
CPU: 810 v2.1 vs 808
Storage: 64GB is enough for me, but X Style has an expandable slot
VGA: Adreno 430 vs Adreno 418
Sensors: Fingerprint scanner, doubletap2wake, Gyroscope.. I don't need Moto Voice or Moto Ambient Display
Battery: 3300 mAh vs 3000 mAh
This is just my humble opinions about OP2's strength, of course there're lots of pros of X Style that maybe suitable for you, for example NFC, quick charging, slightly better camera, durable brand name Motorola,...
I'm a fanboy of Motorola, but sorry Moto, my decision this time is OP2 =)
And the decision was...?

Moto X Play vs. Moto G (3rd)

Apologies for the length of this reply. TL;DR - Moto G 3rd gen vs. Moto X Play - taking into account the extra $200 for the X Play, which would you recommend and why?
Longer version:
Had an accident with my Moto G2 last week (fell in the sink and fried the motherboard) and am now looking for a new phone.
I could get the Moto G for $0 or the X Play for ~ $200 (both carrier locked).
The main issues I had with my old Moto G2 were: a) the RAM; b) Internal Storage. I was constantly losing my audio playback (podcast) when running Waze simultaneously driving in the car and the phone just often seemed laggy in general. Also, I was constantly running out of space to install apps (particularly due to a couple of very large games).
Given that the new Moto G has the same 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage (at least here in Canada; would have really appreciated the 2/16 option that they have in the US), would I be likely to experience the same frustrations or would the performance be significantly better due to: a) better CPU; and b) Marshmallow [I was running Lollipop 5.0.2 on the old phone], which allows for use of SD card as internal storage?
My concerns with the X Play (other than the additional cost) are:
1) Durability - the Moto G has enhanced water resistance and is easier to grip (from what I've read)
2) Size - Moto X Play seems larger but I'm not sure how much of a difference it would be coming from the G2 ...
Any suggestions?
Personally I would never go back to a 1 GB phone (I used to have the original 2013 Moto G). Perhaps performance is better now with the 3rd Gen but having used 2 GB... I also had an Xperia Z from 2013 but it had 2 GB as well and there were no issues with apps closing like I had on my G.
So my pick would be the Play. However, what other choices do you have for that price?

Hi! Thanks for the quick reply.
Here are the devices available from my carrier (Wind Mobile) at these price points (price is what I would pay out of pocket - rest is covered by $250 tab):
Galaxy S4 - $200
Xperia C5 Ultra - $150
LG G Stylo - $100
Xperia M4 Aqua - $50
Ascend G7 - $50
Moto G (3rd) - $0
HTC Desire 626s - $0
Galaxy Grand Prime - $0
Thanks again!

As a follow-up, do you think it would be worth paying an additional $200 for the extra 1 GB of RAM?

I myself would pay for the extra RAM. My thought would be that memory requirements of both Android and apps is only going to increase and I try to keep my phones as long as possible.
I'm also on Wind so that list of potential phones looks familiar. My personal choice is still the Play.
I've also read that some shipments of Wind's X Plays are already SIM-unlocked but I don't have another carrier SIM to verify that mine is. I do know my Moto G was sold by Wind and it was unlocked because they checked it for me in-store.
You might want to try it out in-store to see if you are ok with the larger size. I don't mind it and prefer it because I'm getting old and my eyes aren't as good as they used to be.
Hi - I decided to try the Play but figured it might be worth a quick phone call - just got off the phone with Wind Loyalty and they added another $150 to the tab, so the phone only cost $49!

Wow, nice. That makes it a much easier decision then, huh? Nice job, I think you'll be happy with it.
The extra 1gb surely will make a lot of difference. 1gb ram phone is only good if you could put custom rom in it.
I have both devices (and develop CM and my kernel for both) and happen to be on Wind Mobile too. Since they've added some extra to your tab, I suppose your decision has become easier.
If you care about the camera at all, the lux camera is certainly a major improvement over osprey (though osprey is not bad by any means). While the image processing with both the Motorola stock camera app and the CM camera are not up to iPhone standards (colours and dynamic range), detail on lux is amazing in good lighting.
Performance wise, lux (the X Play) will certainly be better, due to the RAM, and also the more powerful processor. Single core performance is a better on lux (more than the difference in clock speeds would indicate, since lux is using faster memory and higher clocked internal busses). The GPU on lux is also much more powerful than that on osprey. I don't know if you care about gaming performance, but lux would certainly be much better than osprey (triple the frame rate for heavy things). One area where you won't notice much difference is UI fluidity. Both run android smoothly without much lag or stutter. Marshmallow is better than Lollipop 5.1 which is better than Lollipop 5.0.
Lux also has a huge battery (but a more power hungry display and processor) - I get around 5-6 hours screen time on osprey, and 7-8 hours on lux.
One area where osprey has an edge is waterproofing (and perhaps overall durability). I've thrown my osprey into the water at a beach when showing off to family and left it in the water for a few minutes. No issues when I did that (though it's not something I recommend obviously). I would not do the same for lux, since it is not waterproof. If you have a habit of dropping your phone, osprey may also be more likely to survive because of its smaller screen.
In terms of in hand quality feel, lux is better than osprey. The body feels more solid, and the dimple at the back of the phone feels nicer. The back cover of my osprey creaks a bit when pressing the edge in some places, and that irks me somewhat. However, neither can match the quality feel of the 2nd gen Moto X (victara).
Size wise, lux is obviously bigger than osprey. Whether or not that's a good thing is down to personal preference. I found lux huge when I bought it (I came from a first gen Moto X). However, I got used to it and now find its size to be normal. However, I still like the in hand feeling of going back to a smaller phone sometimes.
Development wise, I'd consider them about the same. I'm one of the main developers for both devices, though lux is my daily driver right now. The osprey port of CM13 matured a bit sooner than my lux port, but they are both built from a common code base we are using for the entire MSM8916 family.
If there is leftover stock of the previous (2nd gen, victara) Moto X, I would also strongly consider that. Victara has better build quality than either of these, and is significantly faster than either of these. The victara camera is about the same as osprey. The main weakness of victara is battery life. It gives me around 4 hours of screen time.

Squid,
Thanks very much for the very thorough and detailed review! My two concerns with the X Play are the durability and size but I don't think that these outweigh the other benefits vis a vis osprey. Do you think the size would be a significant factor coming from the 2nd gen Moto G?
Thanks also for the feedback on the 2nd gen Moto X. Their website no longer includes last year's model but I can drop by my local store to see if they have it in stock. Only thing is, they may not apply the additional tab as that was only available if I ordered through the loyalty department over the phone ...
There are several Victaras available used on Kijiji but do you think it's worth paying $250 for a used victara over $50 for a new lux?
Also, the victara lacked a microsd card which is something that I'd like to have ...

For $250 used victara vs. $50 new lux, I'd say definitely get the new lux. If you can convince them to apply the same tab to a new lux or a new-old-stock victara, that's a tougher decision.
If you want a big battery and great camera (and MicroSD), go for lux. If you want faster performance and like the sleek metal frame of the victara, go for it. If you are concerned about water damage and want a device you can abuse without feeling too bad, go for osprey.
And if you are insane like me and money is no concern, buy all three. And heck, why not throw in a surnia too

Damn that are a lot of Moto's
or just get the X Force. I believe it has all the features the lux, victara and osprey combined.
My missus has a 2GB 3rd gen Moto G and i would rather have my MXP, better screen, better battery, better camera, better audio.
