Honor 7 stutter while scrolling on some apps - Honor 7 General

I've had the Honor 7 for almost a month now and it's a great phone, I have noticed one or two issues in regards to lag though. If I am in a Skype call the Skype app shows noticeable lag when scrolling through contacts. Twitter also lags when scrolling through the twitter feed but once images have loaded it is smooth. Is anyone else having similar issues?

I'm not completely satisfied with the performance either. I think the cpu is being too reserved. It uses big.little which means its 2 quad core processors rather than a true octacore. They can't work together, its either the big or little that's running things.
In normal day to day tasks it will be using the little quad core a53 1.5ghz. This is a midrange chip and doesn't even run full speed scrolling through pages etc. In some situations I've noticed better performance on my Redmi 1s.

I'm feeling it a bit laggy too. Nexus 5 with custom rom(euphoria OS) was blazing fast with "worse" CPU.

At least its not as bad as the z5 compact https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Om8LHKMwjU
In my opinion these big.little cpu's need to go. It puts low end cpu's to do every day tasks and the difference is noticeable. The only thing they are better at is benchmarking. My guess is chipmakers (ARM) failed this year. The best they could come up with is the a57 but it runs so hot and consumes so much power that putting it on its own was impossible. Hence the 'big.little' which would allow high benchmark scores but have most tasks run on the slower chip. Mediatek or a snapdragon 801/805 are better. I think Honor can improve things a bit in updates though.

Another weird issue is gmail crashing. For example when opening email from xda app just closes. Older versions and clearing app data didn't help.

Funny you mention the N5 as having just put Android M on it, it's flying and I was spending some time tonight playing around and wondering how it can be so quick at everything despite being so old (relatively speaking) and using very old SoC.
Doze has also made the battery much better, so while it's not as sexy as modern devices it is showing up more than just the Honor 7.
Of course, I'm using my H7 day to day and the N5 stays at home, but it's still impossible to ignore.

The lag doesn't really bother me since I don't use twitter on my phone much but I just found it odd since there's no lag when scrolling on YouTube wine there's a 1080p video playing. Maybe they'll fix it with updates (that will hopefully come out faster then we might expect lol)

I've faced lag in tapatalk & Google now widget consistently. This scroll stutter does come up quite frequently even in other apps

Is anybody experience phone restart when using Google's indic keyboard?

anyone else notice how much more the play store lags after the update?

i9505 poor gaming performance

I have poor gaming performance on my i9505. It's not lagging, but the FPS is not high enought to play the games smoothly. Actually I was waiting that all games will run smooth, when I was buing i9505, but I'm really disappointed.
for example Real Racing 3 doesnt run smoothly on high and ultra high details (which are default for i9505)- the more cars on the screen, the poor the performance.
Simpsons Tapped out - the same problem, game is lagging on some parts of the city. Actually the game has the same poor performance as on galaxy S2.
GTA Vice City also poor performance on medium and higher details.
Doesn't helps to restart the phone, there is enough available RAM +200MB when playing any game. The CPU monitor shows, that 1core runs on 100%, second core 50% and 3,4th core 0% on every game, clock is set aroung 1GHz. I'm running stock android 4.3 with touchwiz
Is it a problem of poor GPU performance, or the apps are not optimized?
Does anybody other has the same problem?
maybe there is an solution to lock GPU clock and prevent phone from downgrading the GPU clock...
Why is the phone running at 1GHz? Stock for the phone is 1.9GHz?
energy savings on?
no no, the phone is running OK, I don't have enabled power saving.
The clock of the CPU changes depending on the CPU load - it works good.
But for example, when I'm playing real racing 3 on default graphics settings, the CPU clock changes, but in average, the clock is around 1.2GHz and usually only 2 cores active. But sometimes and all it's cores goes on 100%. - this works OK.
But I don't understand, why most of the games are not smooth, and doesn't load the cpu on 100% to get smoother - that's the problem. Or maybe it's a problem of GPU?
Or the question could be: How to get the maximum performance from i9505? Because I don't think, that the games are using all of the phone performance and therefore the games are not smooth.

Gameloft and other companies have not remotely optimised their games for the S4 archetecture, so they just lag and run poorly. ART in Kitkat may well solve a lot of this issue once it is fully implemented and supported. Some games run fantastically well (bard's tale) and others (gameloft, gta vice city and others) run absolutely awful. I installed them on S3 and they run great, and the CPU useage and GPU is far better. It's a mix of the S4 and the game devs. OpenGL ES3.0 helps in 4.3 (especially google edition, touchwiz slows EVERYTHING) and ART hopefully will help again in 4.4.

I find the Google Edition better, but far from perfect for gaming. I'm using a rom for Google Edition. 4.4 can be flashed now with ART support, but as it is Alpha/Beta status at the moment (even though alpha/beta aren't used as they actually are in software testing) so there are niggles and bugs. I'd say flash 4.3 and see if any better, keep backups, and maybe if you're adventurous try 4.4.
As I say it's better but badly optimised games will just be badly optimised games that lag and stutter. That's gameloft in my experience in general. Filter reviews by 'from this device model only' on the play store and see how many 1 star reveiws there are from S4 users. The S3 is far faster with the same games side by side. ART better sort this rubbish out!
so maybe it's a reason to move to iOS, where the apps are perfectly optimized

As much as I love Android, the user experience on iOS is really really lovely. The games load so well and they tend (not always) to run great! Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and I don't buy into this calling names rubbish android forums always devlove into. The best user experience for me on all my devices is the iPad. It's pretty much perfect out of the box.
Obvioiusly iOS is very restrictive and closed and the keyboard drives me mad, but yeah it's a good alternative to Android.
Writing an Android app is an exercise in sacrifice. Hey there's a cool new feature in 4.3 I can use for notifications... and 95% of my customer base is gone already on older versions etc. It's very, very annoying. And throw in OEM messing with the OS and you have a huge fragmented mess on your hands.
iOS ain't perfect but let's not be totally blinded to its positive points.
EDIT: My current setup I tend to use most is my S4 (GE rom) and iPad for tablet. Seem to suit best

How about the performance of Exynos 5250?

Hi, guys. I am interested in N10,but I am very curious about performance of N10. I know Samsung use an dual core based at ARM15, but its screen has a high resolution 2560x1400. Is its dual core really capable of such a high resolution? How about the performance of multiple tasking? Any lag? My current cellphone is Galaxy Note 2 that has a quad core chip, but it is not as fast as what I thought until I flash 4.4.2 ROM. Tell me your experience of using N10. Your comment would really help me make a good decision. By the way, the main purpose is to internet bowersing and watch movies which store on portable HDD. Thanks

I have been running the Nexus 10 since it came out. No complaints here. I watch allot of Youtube video, news and sports videos, etc. Even runs better when I tether it off my 4G. Been testing latest 4.4.3 Roms available here at XDA. Not much difference over 4.4.2, runs good with either.
Good luck.
The cpu doesnt primarily drive the screen so it handles the big resolution screen very well. With browsing and watching movies its just fast. This thing is a beast when it comes to gaming because it has a kick ass gpu..

I agree with the two posts above mine. I've had this tablet for a few months, and never once has it felt slow or sluggish with anything I've thrown at it. This ain't your typical dual core. It's on par with my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013).

Great!
Hi,
Not only what the guys said above, to power the screen resolution, the GPU has 1GB allocated to it since 4.3 if I'm not wrong. So it's quite capable, just be careful when using many apps, the RAM is limited to only 1GB due to it. Even though I'm able to play many games and watch full HD videos with ease and comfort .

As usual, the correct answer would be: "It depends!"
The Nexus 10 is the best Samsung could do at the time it came out.
Somehow both Google and Samsung felt compelled at the time to deliver something that would beat Apple at least on paper.
Truth is, it's a somewhat unbalanced device by today's standards.
A typical competitor today would probably have a Qualcom Snapdragon 800 or better and you'd notice the difference!
Generally CPU performance is still quite ok: More than 2 cores rarely make sense and these ARM 15 cores tend to have enough oomph for the sort of things you'd run on a tablet CPU. And the Exynos seems to be a close match to the Snapdragon, core by core.
So there, for all practical purposes, it won't feel much slower than a modern devices.
But the GPU can't quite deal with the resolution and even if it could, DRAM bandwidth would be the next barrier. So when you look for 3D game performance, the Nexus 10 can't quite keep up with what is out there these days.
Depending on your benchmark it may feel like a dog, but good games tailer themselves to what's available and even some 3D ones are actually ok.
Mine's most used for reading books, surfing, perhaps even some video, I'm also doing some writing (with BT keyboard/mouse) on it and that's all more than ok, especially when you want to flip forth and back between lots of web-sites and programs.
I'd say when you can get the Nexus 10 for cheap it's still pretty good, when you're ready to pay prime dollar, you'll find better even from Samsung.

I'd say this is a pretty fair assessment. GPU struggles with some modern apps such as Google maps, and even now Chrome isn't the best. I still use browser because its much smoother, and I also use the 'performance' CPU governor which locks the tablet to 1.7ghz and really helps responsiveness.
That being said, its still a really really nice tablet generally. If you're getting it for a good price you should be happy enough. I still love using mine nearly 2 years after buying it, and I'm comparing it to my snap 800 powered XZU. Its still a really nice screen, really nice design. Quick enough and battery life is not too bad these days either! (6 hours SOT easy with brightness at 35℅)

[Q] Note 4 SD 805 gaming issues

Hi all,
I just bought a note 4 sd 805 (the UK version). I expected this to be a very powerful phone, but instead I am kind of disappointed .
After playing Asphalt 8 for just 15min, the game starts to lag considerably and suffer from some serious frame rate drop.
The phone itself heats up a bit, but not a lot.
I also noticed that, if I run antutu for say 5 times in a row (with no pause), the score will drop from about 48000 to about 38000.
I still keep my note 3, which is rock solid and did not have the above behaviour (i.e. no heat at all, I can play asphalt 8 for hours with perfect quality and consistent antutu scores of about 43000).
Also my pvs is 13, which seems to be quite a good one (as per this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/info-check-share-cpu-binning-t2950180)
Do you guys think I have a faulty note 4? Should I return it?
Thanks
I dont think that you has a faulty note. Same here with s5 and sd 801 runing gta vc. In about 20 mins of gaming fps drops horrible

Thanks,
but if the latest generation of phones cannot handle tasks (i.e. games) which the previous generation (note 3 in my case) handled with easy,
doesn't that mean the the phone is not fit for purpose?
In my case I paid £580 and expected to see some improvements. The only true improvement (compare with note 3) is the camera.
The game performance is awful.
The display seems to be brighter (on auto and against direct sun light), but if I actually want to use it like that, it starts heating up and throttle after 15min.
In normal tasks (browsing and light apps) note 3 and note 4 perform on par, with sometimes note 3 being faster.
I also ran the stress test app, and it seems that the note 4 does not stay on 2.7 at all. it starts with 2.4 then quickly goes to 2.2 and 1.9 and after a few minutes it goes down to 1.1 and it stays there. My note 3 on the other hand starts with 2.27 and stays there for few minutes then goes down to 1.9 and 1.7 and then it stays between 1.5 and 1.7.
So, under heavy load snapdragon 805 perform worst than 800. Please note that the SD in my unit has the perfect binning of pvs13. The SD 800 in my note 3 is pvs 2 and it is still way more stable.
I just want to know if you guys have similar experience with the phone?

You right bro.
You can manage your thermals with custom kernel. Its a know problem, even in the lg g3 forum theres a mod to raise the values of throttle.

Disable DVFS (just for the laggy games if your phone doesn't freeze and restart) and asphalt will be perfect. You can also run games in 1080 which helps and be grateful as there are kernels supported by your phone's version that you can mess with the thermal throttle and gpu clocks. Just don't let it get too hot
I agree with you, there should be no tweaks needed to run any game, but that's unfortunately not the case, but with some work you can get it to perfect performance! Good luck!
How's the gameplay on the Exynos variant? I never had gaming issues on the Note 2
@arjun90
exynos is way better at gaming
its not laggy in asphalt 8 even after 15 minutes
On sd805 asphalt 8 is just unplayable.. it does not work well from the first minute (I mean as good as my sd800 note 3)
and after about 15min it becomes even worst.
and that is with sd805 binned 13.. My first note 4 (which I returned) was getting hot just from web browsing. I am sure the cpu was with low quality bin.
Samsung should get rid of this low quality cpus.. We pay some serious money and at the end it is just a lottery...
I am also seriously disappointed with the awful deteriorating game performance. For a phone of this price and calibre I was expecting so much more. I hope it is software related and can be fixed, but I don't want to melt my phone!
I have Canadian SM-N910W8 with SD805 and 420 Adreno just tried asphalt 8 its running fast at high setting even with power saving on. Also scored Atutu 47923.
Anyone tried Wolf among us? Game won't start after title screen?

well I don't know what to say mate I have the same cpu and gpu, Antutu for me is even above 48000 regularly about 48700
still asphalt 8 is just pretty much unplayable.. Some other games however are ok. Hope it is a software issue and sammy/app developer(gameloft) fix it.
I am non rooted and fully stock..
Have you try to greenify everything then run the game? I think it probably software.
I'm rooted but using my original stock image as base with extras - fixed everything working. Took me a while but good trends here before had lots of issues.
Yes i agree with that games like asphalt should play smooth without installing custom rom.. It is really awful.. But now after flashing kernel and flashed rom it runs smoooottthh!..
it is the first android phone I am reluctant to root (at least for now). Lollipop is coming very soon and I prefer to see what it will bring to my note.
If if works for you guys (after rooting and possibly applying custom kernel and some modifications) it is sammy fault and not the game developer. It is really frustrating. Hope sammy fix this mess soon.
Yet again blaming the chip on what is clearly a not optimized game for the 805. Software is the problem. Ya know if the game isn't optimized for that chip it will run like ****, if they update for this phone and it still runs ****ty than they did a bad job.

bizarre.. for me the medium & high settings are available.. it just the game itself kind of unplayable.
the fact that some users report that the issue is fixable with root and custom kernel gives some hope.

Your Thoughts on Idol 3 5.5" Octo-core Processor

I bought the Idol 3 4.7" because I wanted the smaller form factor, but I returned it because the Snapdragon 410 is just not strong enough for me. Multi-tasking between even basic apps like email and calendar would stutter and drop framerate and that's kind of a dealbreaker for me.
I'm thinking about trying the 5.5" but I'm afraid the octo-core isn't isn't gonna be much faster since its clock speed is only 300mhz higher than the Snapdragon 410.
So Idol 3 5.5" owners, are you satisfied with the 8 core processor? Is there any noticeable framerate drop or stuttering switching between apps, and if so, which apps stutter the worst?

My experience (own 4 idol 3s - each given to different family members and I once in a while "test" them out) if you are going to have low/moderate apps and background noise then is fine and smooth. If your going to load that thing up (like me) you will see micro lags.

Hopefully once we have some custom rom's or more importantly some custom kernels we will be able to adjust the speed up to the rated 1.7ghz and try some schedulers/io schedulers we don't have now so performance will pick up some.

Update UD71 10 06 fixed the sluggishness of the phone (before that I was on the brink of selling it)
It went from 5/10 to 8/10 in my personal rating and would suggest the phone.
I had a s6 edge and I'd say the speed difference between the two was negligible and the Samsung is 3x more expensive
The speed of the cores is not the issue, its the weak GPU that makes it lag. Navigation around the UI is tolerable but trying to game on anything but casual titles has frame drops. I kept my i3 over Zen 2 for the simple fact the speakers blow anything out of the water and it does everything else "competently".
I'm pretty much satisfied with the Snapdragon 615, coming from a chinese phone with 1 GB RAM and an MT6582 chip (also from a Nexus 7 2012). I find everything extremely smooth.
I haven't rooted it yet, No TWRP recovery, I just have whatsapp and telegram installed, for everything else I use Chrome. Games are pretty smooth to me, even the DS Emulator.
What I find lackluster is camera performance, too much noise even on good light conditions. Maybe it's the stock camera's fault.

Hey guys. I bought the Nexus 6P this week at the same time I finished my new app Face Jacker. The app is quite intensive on the CPU - as it's a camera app and I'm manipulating the pixels from the camera every frame, but something is just not quite right when ran on the Nexus 6P.
I created and tested the app using the Samsung S5 on lolipop which runs the snapdragon 801 cpu. It runs seriously smooth on the S5. I later tested the app on the S7 edge since it was running marshmallow -- again no issues there, app ran silky smooth just like the S5 just as I expected.
Now heres the weird part, I load the app up on the Nexus 6P same day I buy it. The face jacking runs smooth for around half a second before the fps drops from around 28 to 7. Both the nexus 6p and S5 are using the same resolution when running the face jack.
I'm trying to figure out what's causing this serious knock in fps after the first half second... The only thing I can think of is the CPU being throttled. I checked the temps but they around 46 on full load of the app - but this wouldn't be enough to throttle, would it?
The clock speed of one of the cores in the 6P is obviously fast enough to run the algorithm every frame (as it runs fine for first half second) but it takes a serious nose dive for some reason I can't explain.
Does anyone know anything special about the snapdragon 810 cpu? I've read that it can be a beast of a cpu performance wise - but I don't understand why it would run so slower to an older cpu.
Sorry for rambling on, just really stumped with this one and I don't know where to even start to debug this.
I can't post a link to the app since I've just registered to XDA - but if you want to find it, please search Face Jacker in the playstore - it's the one with the purple icon.

It's most likely throttling. From my experience 46°C would easily be enough for the CPU to start throttling back, and even dropping cores completely, in order to control the heat that's generated by this chipset.

Thanks Heisenberg. Didn't realise that 46°C would be enough to cause throttling.
So before I start changing my algorithm - is there any way to bypass this throttling? I read somewhere that Marshmallow causes the throttle -- is this correct?
It's quite frustrating as the device gets warmer using other less intensive apps!

It isn't isolated to a specific Android version (it happens on this phonon LP and M), it is specific to the Snapdragon 810 chipset though. The throttling occurs at a kernel level so to change it you'd need root access and a kernel tweaking app to stop throttling from occurring. Or you could build a kernel that doesn't throttle. But that would need to happen on each device, so it isn't a realistic option for getting the app to work properly.

Cheers Heisenburg. Reckon I gotta either offload to the GPU or change the algorithm altogether!
