I purchased two Nexus Players today. I was unable to get kodi 15.1 from the play store connecting to my mythtv pvr backend when used with the Nexus Players as frontends.
Without diagnosing the reason and after trial and error, I had to do the following.
1. Update the Nexus Player to Android 5.1..1 via the normal update facility.
2. Install ES File Explorer on the Nexus Player
3. Download the latest kodi release candidate ( currently kodi-15.2-Isengard_rc3-armeabi-v7a.apk ) from kodi.tv and save to my dropbox
4. Add dropbox as a cloud network location in ES File Explorer
5. Use EF File Explorer to navigate to and install the kodi .apk from my dropbox
( note - I am running mythbuntu 14.04 in a parallels virtual machine on my recent desktop Mac and performance is surprisingly good. I have two HDHomeRun devices providing 4 tuners in total )
Hi. I have a Nexus Player with Android M and Kodi 15.2 (x86) connecting to a MythTV 0.28 backend (using the MythTV PVR client). Kodi starts fine and loads the MythTV channels and recordings. Within a few minutes (sometimes less) Kodi will hang. Clicking the home button on the Nexus remote returns me to the app launcher. If I run Kodi again, sometimes it returns to a working state and it seems that it had accepted all the remote clicks while it appeared hung. It's like Kodi was still working but not able to update the screen. Other times, running Kodi again (after going back to app launcher) will result in a black screen and I eventually get "Kodi has stopped responding, wait or close".
My hope is the use the Nexus Player as an all in one box for a MythTV front-end, Netflix etc. It's close but the stability issues are a show stopper at the moment.
How stable is your setup?
Not particularly stable.
I have not installed the latest release yet. Main issue is hanging when I am watching TV and the backend starts a scheduled recording.
I have been using the TVMC version of Kodi and it works perfect with no issues running the latest version of pure nexus Rom.

So I am going to be honest. I don't care for my Ouya much. I bought it with the intention of using it as a XBMC machine but it wasn't that good at that. So I bought a ROKU and never used it again. So I was doing some thinking and wondered if I could use it as a DLNA streamer in my house matched up with a 1TB ExtHDD. So here's who you can do it:
What you need:
BubbleUPNP (Licensed copy) ($4.83 in the states, very worth it)
Ouya
Root your Ouya and use the mod found in the Development forum on installing the PlayStore. Download and install the BubbleUPNP app along with the license key copy.
Go into the development settings of your Ouya (Android development settings) and go all the way to the bottom and uncheck the option to not keep apps in memory. You want it to act as a normal android device not the typical Ouya exit and kill it method.
Open bubble and press the (Pause? The button u the middle on the bottom of the controller) to bring up the settings bar.
Enter settings and go into Device Library. Enable the file system setting and set a custom mount point. As my Movies arent in the root you can set the mount point within multiple folders.
Continue to go through the settings and make sure you set the app to:
1- start on boot (in case the Ouya reboots)
2- use "Keep Alive bursts"
3- keep the app alive
Once you have that set you should be able to view it from a ROKU or other DLNA device.
To watch it on a Chromecast use BubbleUPNP on your phone or tablet, set the devices to whatever you called your Ouya share and renderer to your Chromecast. Once you select a video it will play.
This has worked for me for 3 days now with no issues. I have streamed out 3 1080P shows at 1 time to various devices with no buffering or A/V sync issues.
Enjoy!

I only see plex pass is showing up in apps, looked on play store on the web shows plex for android not compatible , new version not out yet ?? what is everybody doing side loading it ? thanks.... nexus player isn't ready at all , no surround sound in netflix , not a very good start ..
Android TV support is a plexpass only feature right now. Even if you sideload the paid plex app (for non plexpass subscribers) it will not show up in the android tv launcher and will not have the new leanback interface. You could still launch it from chainfire's leanback launcher or whatever its called though. But I'm not sure how well it would work.

Kodi + PleXBMC + Amber Skin will give you a "Plex Home Theatre" like experience without having a plexpass and it is not buggy with a terrible UI like the Current Plex for Android App is!

Having tried both, I have to agree with this 1000%.

Hello, Thanks for the replies , I installed kodi beta 2-x86 with plexbmc addon-3.0.0 , it crashes every time i try to play a video from plex, if i press select it will open stream then close ,working shows up in the corner then it crashes to the nexus home screen, pressing the play button on a movie crashes it instantly.. I checked my setup on the fireTv to make sure i had it set up right. It works on the fireTv but crashes on the nexus player. Anybody else having issues ??? Thanks..
Try beta 1, I was having some crashing with the Live TV addons on beta 2. I don't have Plexbmc since I use the Plex app for that so I don't know for sure if this will work.
Thanks ,that did the trick using beta 1 , it loads very slow and you get cache full, but it works ... it keeps pausing , could be wifi , buffering , ethernet connection would solve some issues .. Thanks...
Edit: stopped working getting , error script failed ; plexbmc
installed Gotham 13.2 , plexbmc works better on this not getting cache full , loads faster

Why use both Plex and Kodi? What's the pros of using them both?
I can cast most things. But Slingbox, Showtime, and Starz are having issues casting to Nexus Player.
The other Chromecasts I have in the house work perfectly fine with these 3 apps. But casting to Nexus Player doesn't work for those apps.
Anyone else having these issues?
Edit: I am using an iPhone 6
I came to post the exact same thing! Showtime and starz both don't cast to nexus player. I tried using different frequencies on wifi and used a USB to ethernet adapter on player until I finally tried the apps to my chromecast with no issues. This is a major bummer! I also noticed that when casting HBO GO voice wasn't in sync with video. Nexus Player is definitely buggy hopefully they push out a bug squashing update soon.
ok. Well at least it's not just me. I posted on google forums as well. Maybe a google employee will see it? Hopefully they know about it.
Are you on android? Don't think it's an OS thing...
I also tried it from starzplay.com to nexus player. That doesn't work either. So I think it is a problem with nexus player casting. Some bug fix is needed.
Funny I have an app that works when casting to a nexus player but not on chromecast. Seems like there is more to the googlecast protocol than I thought. I thought the implementation would be the same on all devices.

I can add casting chrome desktop doesn't work to the Nexus Player either. I get a black screen (just like with showtime app). Again works perfectly fine with chromecast. I hope this gets resolved soon. Another thing I noticed is the HDMI-CEC. I can cast things to the player and it will turn on the player but it doesn't change input if the TV is currently on like the chromecast does.
Devices I've used with same results are Nexus 5 (lollipop), 10(kit kat), and Acer Chromebook 13.
vudu showtime anytime abc all dont work properly, yet android and windows screen mirroring and windows chrome tab casting works much better, i was able to sideload hbogo, maxgo, showtimeanytime, and vudu ....which can all be used with a mouse and keyboard combo like the logitech k400 as long as you have a microusb otg to usb hub
Netflix via Chrome wasn't working for me
I had problems last night getting Netflix to load from my OS X box running Chrome. I clicked the Cast button in Netflix and I just got the spinning/loading icon. I then went to the Chrome Cast Extension, and "no devices found" showed up. When I went to Youtube, the Chrome Cast Extension showed the device.
I haven't tried restarting browser, but just wanted to see if anyone else was having similar issues.
I am also experiencing the same issue with Slingplayer on my iPhone 6. The cast icon appears within the player of the Slingplayer app, and my Nexus Player shows up as the cast device. However, when I select the Nexus Player, I just get an endless spinning/loading icon.
Also having some casting issues!
Previously had a Chromecast and everything I had worked great with it.
With the Nexus Player though, I have two apps that don't even give me the option to cast anymore (Vudu, Disney Movies Anywhere). It is like they don't "see" the Nexus Player as a cast capable device. Every other app I have works fine (Netflix, YouTube, Flixster, Twitch, Google Play Movies, etc).
So is the Googlecast part of the Nexus Player just different enough that apps written specifically for the Chromecast don't work with it or what?

The guy who developed the Videostream app pretty much said exactly what you said. They are not exactly the same. Unfortunate because I bought the Nexus Player for it's casting feature over Wifi AC and it turns out it doesn't work for the main website I want it to work for.
Solving Google Cast to Nexus Player Issue.
HI there,
Issue: the Chrome cast app in the Google Chrome browser no longer 'finds' the Nexus Player (Windows 8.1).
Fix: 1) Unistall the Chrome cast app in the browser.
2) Navigate to your AppDate file in the Windows user folder (view, shown hidden files etc.)
3) Find and delete the Chrome Cast app data.
4) Reinstall the Chrome Cast app in the browser.
Finding the app data in step 3), above can be a chore, as it will depend on your particular Chrome browser's configuration. You may need to go to other Windows or Google forums to learn how to locate the file.
Cheers.
Kodi app stopped working so I uninstalled it then went back to reinstall it an it's not in the Play store on the Nvidia shield console. So I downloaded the Apk oddly laptop to an Sdcard it will install on the console but when I goto click on the Kodi icon the TV screen just Flash's it won't open the app...Any ideas?my console is stock not rooted ..
I just noticed it's gone too. A friend of mine bought a nexus player for the sole purpose of running kodi considering how well it ran on my nexus player. Kind of odd
I tried installing the newest version of Kodi I put the Apk on my SDcard an installed it on the Shield console click on the Kodi app still the screen just flashes..What all the sudden Kodi isn't compatible with the Shield console..It's pissing me off lol
Kodi is still here at the german play store.
GBPackerFanForLife:
Did you sideload the right Kodi Apk for ARM CPU?
Maybe you redownload the Apk and try again. Kodi is still working here at my Shield Android TV.
Ya I used the Arm apk directly from Kodi website then put it on my SD card then install it on my console but when I click on the Kodi icon to open the app it doesn't open it just flashes the screen...I might try a older version of Kodi heck I dunno
That is weird because I am using kodi right now with out any problem. Kodi is on play store and working. Maybe you have any other version of play store app.
Ya Kodi is back in the playstore and is working...very strange..
Can a admin please close this thread..Issue is fixed..
I am able to add apps, so that is not a problem. However, some android tv apps will not load. Is there a link that I can go to for apps that work with the new Nividia Shield standard and pro?
While I am not aware of any such link, and use the non-Pro (32-bit only), I can tell you, what works for me:
* Firefox for Amazon TV (all, except non http(s) URL, like intent:// and it also seems not to be able to download files, at least no .apk files and no voice input, which sucks especially for a browser). You can get version 4.5 (not sure, whether this is the latest) here. Just scroll down the page, which is in German, but you should be able to find it.
* KODI seems to work, as reported by others, but I have problems when entering some resource lists. I just installed it yesterday and did not yet look into it too much.
* NOVA (open source fork of Archos Media Player, which does not work on the Shield TV anymore)
* X-Plore - the best file manager for Android, ever!
* F-Droid - usable, but not optimized for Android TV. That means, you can search for apps and install them. But you can not easily browse the categories.
* Tachiyomi (on F-Droid) - Manga downloader, seems to work, though I did not download yet. But I can access all controls.
* all the streaming video services (Amazon Prime Video, Haystack TV, German TV stations and streaming services) I installed are working flawlessly.
