Looking at the metal edges on the 6P reminds me of the edges on my old Note 4. The thing I'm thinking is that my Note 4s edges got scratched to hell and eventually looked a mess, even with a case on. It seemed small particles of dirt and dust gets into the case and scratches the soft metal.
I wonder if we'll have the same problem with the N6P?
Not to worry, enjoy the party here on XDA til the N6P arrives!
Then it will all be sorted with hands on this cool device!

My friend and I were wondering the exact same thing. I'm hoping that b/c the body is metal, it won't have the same problem that the Note 4 has since that was plastic.

I had the same issue with those edges on my HTC M8. They got scratched up as well and they were metal. I am definitely worried about it.
Got those edges on my silver HTC M7 and while if you look very close you can see some ,just holding it normally you can not tell,my stand out more on the graphite one though

From the look of the graphite version, they weren't shiny.
Those shiny edges are going to get scratched up badly, in one of the videos showing them off, you can see scratches on them already.

I plan to skin it, so I'm not concerned, but damn that is one sexy phone!!
TIL chamfer is the term for flattening the corner of an object, usually in furniture.
Google search the wear on both the black and white iPhone 5. They had chamfered edges, anodized aluminum. The wear is pretty much proportional to how often you have a case on. The chamfers will wear heavier than the rest.
IMO black wears much worse (visibly) than white but it depends if you mind having battle wounds stand out or not. I have friends who like having the silver show through the black. In the end you're only going to replace it in two - three years anyhow.
This will shine up anything, it will take the scratches out.

A lack of case causes more rapid wear.

I put an Invisible Shield on the backplate of my Galaxy S i9000 for the same reason. Seems like it (or any of the similar products) are the best path to go.
I haven't done this on my Nexus S yet.
I'm was considering just buying a new backplate when it gets so beat up that I don't like the look any more.
Mine's not scratched at all that I notice after 5-6 weeks I've had it.
Sorry, I don't think I made myself clear. I want to know how bad the back cover scratches, not which case I need to buy (because if I'm going to buy a case, it's going to be the "S" curved one).
@above: thanks! Can you tell me how you carry around your phone? In your pocket? With other stuff? And where do you put it down if you don't use it? On a place where it could be scratched?
No scratches ...
Not using any case either
My phone is naked and I put it in a soft leather / fabric pouch ...
And I put it in my jeans pocket, together with keys and coins
Done this for months with my HTC Desire and it is still shinny as new!
i carry it in my horizontal belt leather case that was for my old SGS I9000
perfect fit
I already mentioned above no scratches on mine yet.
I carry it naked, in my pocket. My headphones are alway in my pocket (so there's a naked jack in there usually), and I frequently carry a second phone in the same pocket (an iPhone 4 or an i9000).
I've added a poll an edited the first post.
No scratches on mine, but that's because I keep mine in a Nexus One pouch.

I'm exactly like this, except from the keys and coins.
I don't have any scratches (I'm very pedantic with that matter) and I don't use any case (makes the phone looks ridiculous).
I have a couple little scratches... but if you pay close attention to the phone, it has a few black web scratches over a few areas. Almost reminds me of black paint on cars. My Samsung tv is made out of the same plastic and it has the web scratches.
This is an just an example of what I'm talking about....

I have couple on the back and where the usb port is. I tend to miss sometimes when it's dark and I'm tired, didn't really expect it to be scratched there. Oh well, I'll be keeping this phone for a while anyways. Also use a case, but I don't think it's doing a very good job protecting it from scratches.
Does your SGS3 have a gap down the left hand side of the screen?
Is dust building up in it?
If so, post a photo, if you can
I am returning my first SGS3 today as there is a gap between the glass and the casing.
Dust is building up in it and it looks rather unsightly.
I was just wondering if it's just me or not.
Can you see the line of dust down the left side of the screen?

I just ran my nail along the gap and managed to dig out the few flakes of dust in there, so a toothbrush should work fine.
afaik all the samsung mobiles i have used had micro gaps, its the way it is designed. cant notice the gap in s3 as it is white, but it will have it surely.
btw the micro gap is required to absorb the shocks. else all the shock will reach out the screen easily.
The problem I have is that on the left side the gap is quite substantial. Where as there is no gap at all on the right side.
It's like the whole glass part it too far over to the right.
I have seen another blue S3 at Phone 4u and there it an equal gap on either side; so I know for sure there is a problem with this batch at the 3 store.
My white one has no such gap. At least nothing I can discern anyway...

I thought there was one, it is moving slightly. But guess that's good, firmness bad for drops.
It is also an optical illusion! Depending on the lighting angle. Does it look like a big gap on the left? Flip the phone upside down, the gap is still on the left it doesn't flip. Not worried now after noticing it, you had me for 20sec.

Exactly what happens when you drop glass? It breaks.
Glass backs means if you drop your phone you not only have to pay for a new screen but a new back as well.

I dropped my S3 today from 1m on a hard floor - no damage at all. I wonder what the glass would look like if it had any
Actually, the iPhone 4 (with glass back) always fared pretty well against many other phones, in the dreaded drop-test, so it's not as clear cut as that.
Funny though, that the iPhone went from a metal back in the first one, to a plastic back in the 3G, then glass in the 4, now metal in the 5, do we think back to glass again for the next one? :cyclops:
Samsung is always about utility over form. That's why we have shock absorbant plastic battery doors that everyone complains about. They also manufacture the phone to lessen the shock of a fall. Using glass would go against their phone design philosophy. They work to reduce user accidents not create them. Such a contrast with LG or Apple.

couldn't agree more, I think the back on the s3 is design genius, and another thing.....I would love to put a glass back and the s3 back cover on the scales and compare weight.......I really don't get when people say ..."oh the xxxxx feels so much more substantial"........ NO IT DOESN'T, IT FEELS HEAVY!
If the S IV has a physical home button and slippery back I will sit this round out. I would expect the screen to go to the bottom of the phone (have the screen occupy the space used by capacitive buttons) and use onscreen buttons instead. I don't really think the back needs to be glass, but there needs to be some sort of coating to make the phone not slip out of your hand.

That is actually the normal gap. The gaps are very small in reality and they are even on all sides of my phone, but look very large with the 200x magnification...
Some units do have an excessively large large gap either top or bottom, but that's not the case for mine.

Mine has slightly larger gaps at some corners as well. I just have the impression that the outer parts on Sony's newer phones and tablets are fitted less tightly than their older devices. I do know they intentionally need to leave some gap, because removing the glass is the only way to get to the internals with these new unibody devices.
That may be a reason why the glass eventually breaks easier than on other devices though. Damage to the edges is very critical for hardened glass.

Couldn't they just prise the plastic corner edging off to get to it? On my Z1C there is almost no gap between the glass and that edging, so I find it hard to believe it's necessary now. No, it looks like loose manufacturing/quality controls to me, especially when the severity of it varies between devices...

It doesn't look like it's possible to remove the corners, you can't feel any separation between the corners and the sides, it's as if it's melted together or something.
By the way, the nylon corners don't sit directly against the glass, there is still the plastic rim front and back that goes all around the glass.
I can't see the pics anymore

No gap. Black.
I forgot to mention that mine was one of the White pre-orders from Verizon.
My Black Pre-order had a pretty substantial gap on the top as well as a nice sized gash on the inner portion of the aluminum border where the gap is located. VZW is sending me a new device. I hope that this one doesn't have the same issue.

Did VZW give you any issues. My 4 came with chip near the headphone jack. And they are giving me all sorts of troubles. They told me they could send me a new one but they'd have to charge me the Retail price and then once they receive the old phone they'll refund it. According to them "We can't tell when the chip happened" even though I called less than 24 hours after receiving the phone
