Amazon fire stick or nexus player - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im debating whether to get the fire stick or the nexus player since the nexus dropped to $49
Which one is better. I only plan to use kodi basically

Nexus
Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk

I just went through the same decision myself. Choose the fire stick if you need Amazon Video and willing to work for it, since adding Kodi will be more of a hassle. Choose the Nexus if you don't need Amazon Videos, as I think it should be faster and you can install Kodi direct from the app store and be done in 5 minutes.
Since I already have a Roku, and the Nexus Player is only $10 more than the Amazon stick, I went with the Nexus Player. I already have two, so I know how easy it is to install Kodi in it, and I know it would be a hassle to hack the fire stick to install Kodi (but possible), and I have doubts about the fire stick being as fast. It's also nice to have a remote with voice input when you're browsing YouTube. And Android TV is nice to have if you have a newish HDHR device. The only thing the stick has going for it is Amazon Video and $10 savings (if you buy the old model).

Fire TV Stick:
*Mouse Toggle* - HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you sideload any apps that needs a mouse/keyboard.
HBO Go
Disney
ESPN
FOX
A&E
HISTORY
and many many more apps than Android TV.
Nexus Player:
Fewer apps but new ones are being added slowly.
missing most of those apps.
Quad Core and 1 GB RAM make it much faster and less annoying to use than the fire tv.
USB OTG
Latest Android Builds and Bug Fixes.
Both can sideload apps and run Kodi

seems like the nexus is the best choice but the only thing is that xfinity tv go doesn't work with the nexus.. I really need that to work

Nexus player and with marshmallow ( releasing very soon) update you can format a hard drive, thumb drive or SD as internal storage! I would recommend a fly mouse remote and flash lollirock 2.1. You can also flash dev preview of marshmallow us it to format your drive then downgrade to lollirock until zulu does the new 6.0 rom, that way you can expand your storage.

After you get your Nexus Player, have a phone call with Amazon Customer Support. You will need to have an actual phone conversation for the best results. It takes some hunting around Amazon's customer support pages to find how to get a call going. But on the call, tell them you have a NP and are upset it has no Amazon Prime app from Amazon for NP. Depending on how much you have spent with Amazon. They will best case give you a free Fire TV Stick or worst case they will probably give you a $5 credit to your account.
Several of us have done that. Some get the free stick if they buy a lot and have Prime, others have received a $5 credit if they have Prime and don't buy much.

can't wait for your unboxing
Keys for me are :
1)viewing angles and that resolution is good enough
2)responsiveness of Ui
3)rootable to get market on it
4)battery life
Well my A7 now is at ups truck, can't wait until ups guy knock my door
For resolution I am sure will not be a problem since my archos 70 has some resolution.
Agreed, this needs a section. How can Notion Ink already have a section yet availability set for late January???
Yes new section for Elocity A7.
I ordered yesterday and it shipped today. I'm so excited I shaking.
Received my A7 few minutes ago, it is extremely fast.
The only let down is this device doesn't support hardware multi touch, I think.
Browser that come with it have pinch to zoom support but its jerky and does not render properly, pinch to zoom on dolphin hd is not supported at all.
This defeat the purpose of having tablet as internet browsing machine.
Well, I will wait for few days to see if there is any fix about this issue, otherwise she will go back to tigerdirect

Can anyone tell me what kind of Videoplayer insalled in the elocity to play 1080P movies. GTABLET doesn' t play 1080P movies with Hardware decode. Also i like the launcher if some can post the APK!!!
Initial feedback
Just my random notes, I'm not an Android developer, but I have been running a rooted Droid for quite awhile. And advanced novice...
-Rooted out of the box, able to install Superuser. Getting fc with SetCPU, but Titanium Backup works fine.
-Wifi connected immediately. Hasn't lost connection. Streaming Pandora for two+ hours.
-Feels very quick. Page downloads in Dolphin HD are quick with minimal latency. Quadrant = 1900
-Able to stream video from Orb via the web interface with no changes to settings (nice!)
-Running apps with no problems: Newsrob, Pandora, Skype, ADW, Act 1 Video, Dolphin
-Winamp wifi sync working
-Speedtest.net: On my 10/5 Comcast account, scored 5/3.5. Droid scored 1.3/.7
-No multi-touch: Tap to zoom in Dolphin.
Wish list:
-Cyanogen ROM
-Overclock
-Marketplace
-Multi-touch
Overall, I'm very pleased for a $299 tablet and I'm definitely keeping it. If 1-3 on my wishlist come true in the next few weeks, I'll be absolutely thrilled with this.
I'd love to see a elocity section. Thanks!
Elocity Section
I'd like to see one created also
Thanks
Give us an eLocity forum please XDA.
Please make this happen XDA! We're making progress on this thing!
It's rooted, out of the box, we figured out how to get into recovery, we got adb working over wifi, we got LCD Density working...
We really need a forum so that we can pull together and get a better recovery installed, we need GApps and the Market, and on to custom roms!

Oppo Launch F-box Android STB to stream Find 5 content to your TV

Oppo Launch F-box Android STB to stream Find 5 content to your TV
The Oppo Find 5 comes with a very impressive 5-inch 1080p HD display, but sometimes even that isn’t big enough. Thankfully Oppo have released the Oppo F-Box an Android set-top-box from streaming Oppo Find 5 content!
Oppo are no strangers to home media devices, their Blueray players are regarded as some of the best on the market, and with the with other Chinese manufacturers getting in to the Android STB game (Haier, Hisense and Xiaomi) it makes perfect sense for Oppo to launch one too.
Oppo Launch F box Android STB to stream Find 5 content to your TV
Oppo have called their Android streaming device the Oppo F-box (Fun Box?). The sleek black box is so compact it makes even Apple’s minute Apple TV look overly large, and should fit in to even the most cramped media environments.
Full specs of the device have yet to be released, but what we do know is that the F-Box is that it will go on sale internationally later this year, and allows users to mirror content from their Oppo Find 5 to your TV. This includes the home screen, movies, the web browser and even games!
We also have yet to discover if the F-Box is compatible with all Android devices or will only work with the Find 5.
We hope to get our hands on the F-box for review once they are available.

OPPO Style confirmed they'll be adding it to the site once there's stock. It's pretty slick though. I believe Engadget China used it with a Samsung and it worked...
I cant wait to get this, to go along with my Find 5, This phone is sweet its so clean looking, and built with a metal frame inside, its one hell of a sturdy device with premium looks to go along with it. I like how the new batch don't have the back, home and menu displayed unless its turned on, its basically just a screen, all black, It kinda reminds me of my One X International Version but with a lot better specs.
Specs are current or better than today's phones but cost $200 less Unlocked.
With the S4Pro 1.5 Quad Core, 16 or 32GB, Full 5 Inch IPS HD Display, 2GB, Factory Unlocked, 13MP HDR Exmor Camera, DNLA and Much more. I think its the best deal for the price, for a 32GB 5 Inch Display.
I like how Oppo listen to the community and have a future product request section on their forums.
Can't wait..

I tried NETGEAR Push2TV 3000. Didn't work right out of the box, but software update almost solved the problem.
Right now my Push2TV works absolutely fine with Samsung AllShare Cast(tm), which is Miracast(tm) in general. As of Oppo Find5, it connects, mirrors screen, transmits video to TV (and video only), but plays sound through phone speaker . Seems like Find5 is not fully Miracast compatible as of today.
p.s. forgot to mention, CM10, PAC and other CM based ROMs ain't able to connect even. So, "Wi-Fi Display" in their settings is just two words that don't have real meaning, but I believe it'll be fixed eventually.

CM will not work with the Netgear Push2TV on any device other than the Nexus 4. This is because the Push2TV requires source devices to support HDCP - which is the OPPOSITE of the way it should be. Unfortunately, right now, the N4 is the only device that has HDCPv2 libraries compatible with Android 4.2. (Well, maybe the GS4 and the HTC One???)
I haven't tried to see if the Oppo works with Samsung's Allshare Cast dongle, which is more forgiving of devices that lack HDCP.
I haven't tried Miracast on my Oppo yet, partly due to knowing that CM needs a kernel rebase to fix assorted display issues, and partly due to the fact that I'm kinda disappointed in Miracast in general - it doesn't perform well even with a Nexus 4 with any dongle I've tried (PTV3000 and Allshare Cast dongle).

XBMC that works FLAWLESSLY

So I been researching the new Amazon Fire TV and they have figured out how to sideload XBMC on it, but most versions give playback issues except one that was made or the OUYA. The OUYA and Fire TV are both built on Android, so I decided to try the build on the note 10.1 2014 and it works flawlessly!
I've tried and experimented with several versions of XBMC and always had issues with it in some way or the other, but this one is without fault. Give a whirl!

I am very interested in the fire TV if it can output 24p via xbmc. Otherwise, I'd recommend it to others but the stuttering it would cause on my TV would be unbearable.
Suddenly today XBMC gotham beta 3 won't open. Tried uninstalling and installed back, nothing, the tablet is stuck for 5-10 seconds and then prompts a message that "XBMC needs to close". I don't want to run SPMC as this is compatible with 12.3 and I would like 13 database compatibility.
Anyone else experienced this? Is there a gotham version of SPMC?

I run XBMC on a Vision3D right now, with my media being served up from a Synology box and it's quite nice. It would be sweet to primarily move to the FireTv as I'm a prime member and must run video full screen through a browser, and though I have a 50/25 wired connection I frequently need to force movies into HD when streaming through Prime.

I'm rocking a raspberry pi tweaked to within an inch of its life lol. Playback is flawless. Navigation is actually great too (I'll post a review I did in a minute) but I want something new with a bit more power so I can use a nicer skin aside from amber. I'm serving media from a Synology Nas as well, the DS112, pretty cheap and very solid.
So yh, I'm hoping the fire tv can do 24p as its perfect otherwise.

It's just one of dozens of ways of getting media from something to something potentially via something else. Somebody above mentioned using a NAS (Network Attached Storage device) which has their media on it and (I'm assuming) using a XBMC client on their N10.1-14 to access that content. They could potentially then stream that content being received by their N10.1-14 on to something else (EG: TV). There's a ton of ways of accessing and presenting content and XBMC is just one of many.
I use Plex which does pretty much the same thing but supports my smart TVs (Samsung, Google TV) natively so I don't need a device in between. When I'm traveling I use my trusty old AllShare Cast dongle. I have a Windows Home Server vs. a NAS and run PlayOn on it in addition to Plex server. PlayOn provides access to a ton of web content (including Amazon Instant without needing Flash) in addition to integrating VLC to playback content on my server. PlayOn uses the stock video app which means I can use pop-up-play, multi window, and Smart pause. When I'm working on office stuff I'll usually have a movie, TV show, or the live news running in a pop-up window to keep myself amused.
Here's some screen shots. The first three are PlayOn with AIV or Hulu playing; the second two are Plex. Both support Chromecast but I don't use it. With so many ways of doing the same thing there's no right or wrong solution.

Shield 2?

I'm looking at picking up a Shield TV in the next few months, but wanted to see if there might be a newer version coming out. I know the Roku releases new models every year or so, and it's been about a year since the release of the Shield. Is there any buzz about a new/upcoming version out there?
Thanks
If a new version were to come out in the near future it would most likely be another mobile device & not a set top box
I would agree on this. SATV still offers the best hardware, and next software update will continue to add features (youtube 4k 60fps for example).
I don't really see what a Shield 2 could offer more right now, I mean besides more perfs but as of today nothing trumps the SATV 1.
A new Shield tablet would benefit on the contrary from a SOC pascal-based for example, since the SOC it's using now is older than the one in SATV

The next software update hit a pop-fly right outta left field with the Shield TV being a full Plex Media Server now with transcoding too.
Its out of stock everywhere even on the Nvidia website so something is happening.
There is an FCC filing for a new one, which is a pretty good indicator.
http://www.aftvnews.com/new-nvidia-shield-tv-passes-through-the-fcc/
Also I saw something on reddit, when someone asked why it was out of stock everywhere, but this was mostly speculation.
https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/50nzud/nvidia_shield_tv_discontinued/
I would say chances are pretty good that a new SATV is on the way. Timing and release date would be hard to pin down.
just to temper things there was an fcc filing for a new tablet and that didnt happen , admittedly the lack of stock does usually hint at a new release but who knows if its just a rev of the same setup
Sent from my SGP512 using Tapatalk
As for the discontinued Tablet 2, that was considered due to nVidia providing the SoC for Nintendo's NX (to not compete). So I guess, it's a good sign that the SATV refresh is really coming soon (until holiday season?) as the form factor is quite different. Too bad they close it down so much.
I would assume the new one would maybe be designed to be cheaper. Or maybe a removable HD would be awesome.
Let's hope nvidia don't axe it completely. They have been known to do more professional and ODM stuff then consumer, and the switch is comming.
Surprised nobody has mentioned this.

It's definitely the new Shield or as good as it going to get.
Lost the Sd card slot now.
Same innards and a re-design,mostly extra software features that the original Shield will get too.
Mid gen console refresh, loosing sdcard and a better gamepad you can buy to use in old model too. That's all.
"Old" model will get Nougat as an OS upgrade and will have the same functionality.
Why on earth would they take the sd card out?
HDMI port is now 2.0b
And it looks like it also lost the IR receiver.
does the original not have 2.0b

i'm curious if this will support side loading apps without root and how easy it is to root before i fork up the cash for this thing.
going to wait a bit for customer feedback first before i buy imo.

Looking at the spec sheet on nVidias website, it looks like only the pro version has the ir receiver, micro sd, and micro usb connection. Semi-confirmed by amazon closeups.
Is this really worth calling it a Sheild TV2? It seems to me it's more like a Shield TV Slim. As to the IR Port, until we start seeing the first YouTube reviews crop up. I'll continue to trust the released Spec Sheet that states that it'll have one.
On that same topic, both the Gamepad, and Remote on the 2017 Models should also come with an IR Blaster. nNot for the Shield, which uses either Bluetooth 4.1 BLE, or WiFi Direct. But to control other AVrs, and TVs.

New free app to record Now Playing detected songs called Now Playing Register

The app is called Now Playing Register. With it, you can find the old songs recognized by Now Playing even if they’re gone days ago. Just open the app and you’ll see a register of all the songs you heard since this app were installed.

Can you compare it with this app, if you've had a chance to use it?

The main difference between that application and Now Playing Register is the cost. I understand that an application like this can not be paid because it is essential in this device. Regarding functions, we have tried to make the code as simple as possible. I can not speak of the code of that application because I do not know it, nevertheless, its price seems excessive to me.

We have worked the last weeks in this application and we have launched these days in anticipation of the arrival of the devices to their buyers. As for the link is the one that has already been provided.

Ok cool. I'm still waiting for the my pre-order to arrive. Will definitely give it a shot once I get my hands on the device.
One has ads and one cost $0.99, personally, I'd rather pay a buck for an app without ads.

Ads are the best option for users because if a developer wants to earn your money he will work for it while a paid application has already achieved it. The best example is Nova Launcher that now that practically all users have bought it, it has no incentive to improve so fast.

Thank you for your work on this app, just installed it and I will let you know what I think.
With the latest version of the application you can already share a song, see the album image and remove the ads
In the last message you say, that i can share songs, but I can't find the option, where it is?

Hi. You must wait for Google Play to update the application to have this function. Today you should have this option.
At the request of some users now the application asks for confirmation before deleting everything. I'm sorry for those who pushed this option thinking that it was already implemented
Soon more functions. Stay tuned!
I'm trying to enable the app on my pixel XL and... That's the problem. [emoji819]️

Yes, at the moment it only works on Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL, which are the ones that incorporate Now Playing. We hope that it will soon be possible to port the function to more devices.
