I have noticed that when I get a notification while the screen is locked, the notification pulsates or "breaths"' (as Motorola calls it) for only about 3 minutes and then stops. I thought it was supposed to continue to breath and show me the notification until I dismissed it. Is this normal or is there maybe a setting I have screwed up?
Same here but I guess it's a bug idk

Really don't know how I feel about the notification system on this phone. I would prefer and LED notification light, and this phone has one, it's just not usable. I've got a 6P on order and have some decisions to make.
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
Mine does this too. I'm guessing they made a few tweaks since the move to LCD. Although I haven't owned an X before so I'm not sure if the older models did the same thing, or continued to 'breathe' until dismissed.
I think It's normal. Same thing happens on the moto x 2014.
They probably figure with the way most people eat, sleep, and poop with their phones in their hands that nobody is going to go more than three minutes without checking it anyway, so why keep it breathing longer than that?
consider the battery usage I think .
Same here. Hopefully we'll get Lightflow working with this at some point.

It works now if you're rooted, in case you weren't aware.
Well, kind of... All you can do is have the led turn on. No flashing yet, but it does help quite a bit.

Yeah, I am rooted and aware. By working, I meant flashing. No worries. I'm sure it will be sorted eventually. Heck, even if they could get the front camera flash to light up for notifications, that would be nice too.

Hahaha, didn't see your stats before I replied (xda app)
I used Flash Alerts 2 for the front flash but it's way to bright for my liking and it just flashes the led a predetermined number of times, as opposed to actually controlling it like Lightflow.
My moto X 2014 and moto X style work exactly same way. The display doesn't stay on permanently when notification comes on. It lights up, pulsates and then dims and goes of until you either pick up the device or wave your hand in front of ambient sensors to check notification.
Your phone if working completely as it should do.

Does the "notification pulsing" on the moto x 2014 really goes off after about 3 minutes??? I cannot believe it, since it uses AMOLED as the 2013 Moto X too... And I am owning a Moto X 2013 and I love the Moto Display Feature on it.
On the Moto X 2013 the function is much much much better than on the Style... The brightness of the notification is much higher. The duration of the notification is longer and it pulses constantly every ~5s instead of ~10s... And not for just 3min.. It pulses for hours... as long as you take the device in your hand! Like a normal Notification LED would also do!
So the change of the display type from AMOLED to IPS LCD is a big step backwards imho... And please tell me that this 3min barrier is a bug, because if not, its absolutly useless and definitly a reason to send my moto x style back.

But the moto display works regardless after the timeout. As soon as you wave your hand over the screen it will spring it to life or even pick up the device will spring moto display to life.
The 2014 & 2015 versions work the same way identically regardless of amoled or lcd.
Yes but I dont want always to wave over the device... When I look at the phone I want to see: Are they notifications or not. With my X 2013 it works like a charm... So thats why I am pretty disappointed.
i have tryied the lightflow paid app for test,,, in a weak i noticed that my battery was going down fast... so i uninstalled the lightflow and tryied to go back to moto display.... updated moto software etc... checked all the configs i could... and still nothing.... so now.... my moto display is not working at all.... does not show any icon... and does not reconize my had going near it..... anyway to fix it? tnks :/

One of the Moto X's most unique features is called Active Display. Whenever your screen is turned off, it pulses your notifications on the otherwise black screen. If you want to see a little more, just hold your finger on the notification icon. It's a thoughtful little touch, and part of the reason why the Moto X transcends its otherwise last-generation specs.
Samsung comes kinda close to Active Display with a feature called Smart Alerts. If new notifications have come in since the last time you picked up your phone, it will vibrate when you pick it up. Not really the same thing, but the intention is in the same ballpark.
Guys.. I'm searching the web (mostly here in xda) to make those two features work on my device, but I can't find something!
Can't we do this awesome led under the earphone works as notification led?
Sent from my XT1092 using XDA Free mobile app
Why would you want those features when you have something better, Moto Display? Pick the phone up and it will light up the device, simply unlock it like usual; no need to explain notifications I believe.
It is redudant on the X, probably you're used to it from past devices or kernels you applied before.
I could see the light if you don't keep your phone near you, but just wave your hand over the phone, just the same as the knock I had on my G3. I still had to unlock it after the knock. Just do the wave and unlock like rogeriorp said.
Moto Display is a battery hog and doesnt work right half the time. I disabled it long ago and my battery life doubled.
If ur Moto X is rooted then u can use certain apps from the Play Store to gain access to the notification light (I think one is called Light Flow). Also Im pretty sure some Devs got double tap to wake working on the Moto G so im sure it could work for ur X as long as ur rooted.
Search moto x led in the play store
If you want a smartphone, get Android. If you want a TOY, get iphone
I do like moto display but I miss the notification light. Just got my replacement phone today so I am going to use it for a little bit and then unlock the bootloader and root so I can mess with it a bit.
I never had a phone with double tap to awake but that is a nice feature, but as has been said if you use the moto feature all you need to do is wave your hand.

So you're basically killing the so called best phone feature of the X line up useless, and disabled it for battery life? That is not what the Moto X is about, it is about the user experience. I read it here that people thought it would be a Nexus with extra features, but don't like them after a while and decide to use it as a Nexus device. I am fine with that, to each their own, but it is enfuriating. How would you call this phone a success if not by it's unique features out of the box, with design made to work with it with sensors and everything.. instead you're killing it in favor of battery, like what? Really? :|
That is probably the beauty of android, everyone uses the device as they see fit but I don't see the brightness of killing a phone's features as good as this over standard stuff.
I like ambient display more. But some of you dont have that as an option since you may not be on 5.0. To each their own. I would take battery life over a feature I wouldn't use any day.
I am rooted but nothing seems to work, neither the notification led, nor the double tap!

I find the opposite. Moto Display is better on batter life than ambient display in Lollipop. Not to mention just works better. Plus I also think it is one of the unique and best features of Moto X. Much better than double tap to wake...just pick up your phone and slide...done. or pick up my phone...check the time, put it back in my pocket and never have to turn the display on. Awesomeness!

Having both a xt1095 and a onePlus one I can say dt2w is just better. I find my self having to wave my thumb over the it sensor trying to wake it again. Its a PiTA one handed. Alternatively with dt2w your thumb is already on the screen.
I wouldn't mind it if I could just wave the phone over my leg screen down to trip the sensors but that doesn't work really either.
Worse yet you swipe down to unlock after swiping up on lollipop notification screen....Moto has work to do. Honestly my X is going to get benched till updates roll out. It has so many bugs on lollipop that I'm disappointed.

I'd hardly call Moto Display a battery hog. Just like the 2013 X, it uses a low power core so it's designed to not use much battery. I did an experiment when I first got the phone and it literally added MAYBE an extra 1% of standby battery drain in a 24 hour period. I think you might have had other issues, honestly.

And that's why I'm staying on KitKat. So many people are way too quick to update just because they want to have the latest software for no other reason than having the latest software. I actually had someone on xda tell me I don't deserve my Nexus 5 because I'm keeping it on KitKat. Sorry, but I like my phone to just work, and KitKat works beautifully on both my X and N5. Just toss a few Xposed modules in there and I'm a happy camper.
I've had such a different experience. I updated to lollipop on day one and have had no major issues what so ever. Battery life is great (better than kitkat) and the phone is super fast. I really think it is a user experience and depends on what apps you have on the phone as well as how the phone is used. I love the Moto X and honestly have bought several phones this year. HTC M8, Galaxy S5, LG G3, Xpeira Z3 and the X. I kept combing back to the Moto X...in fact I just sold all of them and kept the Moto...just feels better in hand and all around the best phone out of that bunch for me. I do wish it had the G3 camera on it though...that was the best camera of the bunch...surprisingly I thought the Z3 would have been the best camera but G3 performed better for me. I really hope Moto can issue an update fixing the poor camera quality. That is the one thing that really does bug me.

You dont find that Moto display turns on when u dont need it? I had mine sitting on the table in front of me and randomly the screen would turn on for no reason. Happened time and time again. Plus if u use a PIN then u need to bypass Moto Display then the Android lock screen, so its like having 2 lock screens over lapping eachother. I dont know how u could think using all the sensors on front would lead to less battery usage. Ambient works way better for me. Whatever, not like I care how anyone uses their phone. So happy you guys love Moto Display! :|
If someone of you have had an LG G2 or G3 would understand why double tap and notification led is way better than this moto display or the other feature on lollipop!
In most cases I leave my phone sitting in the table and I'm some meters away, I see the led notify me and go to the table just double tap the screen and I'm ready!
Not to mention that curved back that makes it difficult to use the phone when it sits in the table.. I don't want to take the phone to my hand each time I want to type something, I want it on the table!
You'll tell me now.. "why you bought this phone??"

I had a G3 and I really don't miss tap to wake as I can just wave my hand over the display and get the same result. I do miss tap to sleep though. If I decide to go back to nova launcher, I know there's apps that lock your phone when you set double tap to that app.

Also, since the phone has a rounded back, you can just tap the phone and it rocks causing the screen to turn on. Sometimes when I am playing Xbox and my phone is on the table in front of me I just lightly kick the table and the vibration turns the screen on. I have Nova and use the double tap to lock, however, doing this somehow makes the Smart Unlock not work. If I lock by the side button, then turn the phone on I can use my face to unlock. If I double tap Nova (or use any app that turns the screen off), then turn the phone on I can't use my face to unlock. It is very weird and not sure why.

I was under the impression that amibent display wakes up the snapdragon, while moto display uses a secondary low power chip, which should save some battery. Moto display uses three IR emitters and one IR sensor, those should consume minute levels of current.
Getting through two lockscreens does kind of suck though.
If double-tap-to-wakeup was important for me then I had an OnePlusOne invite and I would have bought that which is way cheaper than MotoX and has got better specs on the paper. But I handed that invite to someone else and bought the MotoX instead.
But I wanted the MotoX for what its offering and now I have got so much used to of the 'touchless' Moto features that I end up replicating same gestures on other phones I come across and then it takes a bit to realize that the others aren't smart enough like MotoX, Even an iPhone costing twice the money feels ancient tech in front of the MotoX. earlier I had complains with the camera but now I even have started liking the camera also for the quicker and smarter gesture based response, afterall what is utility of a mobile camera if you can't access it on time. :cyclops:
I have praises for the MotoX becasue its got few features which suite to me. It doesn't mean that its the only best smartphone, there are other phones as well which have some other distinct features preferred by other people, just a matter of preference, but be careful while choosing.
Those who are facing issues on Lollipop, I would suggest factory reset and clean start after the upgrade, then reset/retrain the Moto features.
If you install any of the custom roms for the Moto X, the light will function as a notification light. Since you seem to not like Moto Display, this seems like a viable option for you.
Second Motorola phone, but first experience with the Moto toys. Frankly, I miss the LED. When I get an email, a Google Voice text or an SMS (using TextSecure), my phone tells me nothing beyond the audio sound.
I see on videos that the display is supposed to pulse every now and then with the info. Yet, mine does not.
I decided not to use the features in the Moto App, the Voice and Assist doesn't appeal to me right now. Thus, that app is waiting for my permission and I see Display is under it's umbrella. Is this why the "active display" feature is not working for me?
Yes. It's an option in there under display.
Sent from my XT1562 using Tapatalk
I got it somewhat working, but the screen does not "pulse" like previous Moto X phones. Is that correct? If I get an email or a text, the phone makes a sound and the screen lights up once. I thought the point of the screen lighting up was to replace the LED, in other words I thought it was supposed to pulse or breath until you notice it.
No as that would drain the battery massively on an LCD screen. Of course it was OK on amoled screen.

Hey guys just want to ask a little question about the 6P. One of my favorite features on my Moto x at the time was the active display, dont understand why other company's like samsung wont do this since they also use a AMOLED screen. I havent heard anyone talk about this so im wondering if the 6P has some sort of active display like the N6 had or that just a moto feature? Im trying to break away from my S6 for reasons (biggest being it cant multi-task) and the LG v10 and Nexus 6P are both on my radar.
*edit* Thought I posted this in Q&A section, if a mod can please move.
6P's active display is hit or miss according to reviewers. May be they'll fix it in next update. Afterall we should have something to look up to and cheer when it gets fixed in an update, right?
Pretty sure the nexus 6p has active display, or some variant... I've seen it in a few videos. It doesn't work like the moto x style as it has no IR on the front (booo) but pretty sure if you move the phone it can show you notifications/time/date etc.
Also, shouldn't this be in a QA section?

Active display is a feature Motorola came out with when they launched the 2012 moto x. Since the phone had a AMOLED screen it allowed them to use the screen as a notification display. I would love picking my phone out my pocket and it showing the time/date without me having to hit the power button. The more I think of it the more I realize that the moto x was the best phone I used.

For the Nexus 6P it's called "ambient display" and it will work when you pick up the phone. It'll show time, date and notifications plus the notification LED will work at the same time. Pretty nice feature

Awesome thanks for the info, now I just need to wait for it to come out near me.
Hi, so I got my Nexus 6P today.
While I love the phone, I must say that (at least in my case) ambient display is hopeless. I've now disabled it.
It never seems to come on when I want it too without a few seconds delay, by which point I might as well be using the phone, and when you don't want it to come on it pops up every 15 seconds even when say completely still on my desk. No idea what's going on, but hey.
On the plus slide, Light Flow works a dream with the LED and that's good enough for me for the time being. Hopefully Old Good will fix ambient display shortly (assuming I just don't have a dodgy device).
Edit: Just occurred to me that it might be lightflow messing up Ambient display even though the LED works fine itself. I'll uninstall & report back.
Quick update. Seems to be the LED that causes the issue, turn if off in settings and ambient display works fine again. Hopefully something a quick software fix will sort out.

Thats kinda strange, on the 2012 moto x there was a led light but was disabled for some reason, not even lightflow could bring it on.
What is the proper way to make active display even turn on? Can't figure it out, it's so random. Tried with LED on and off.

This Ambient Display feature is so frustrating! It should be great, but it's just so unpredictable. How is it supposed to work...?
Same problem here. Hope it will be fixed though
Holding the phone parallel to the ground then lifting the top up until the phone is vertical in one quick motion activates the display pretty reliably for me.
mine never thriggers the display when i take it out of pocket. when on my desk is sort of meh :/
I'm interested in buying the Moto X Play.
I know that on Moto X Play there's no Wave to wake function as there're not special IR sensors.
But, On my Moto X 2013 there were no IR sensors too - and it worked fine on 4.4.4.
I found that it's possible making this feature work again using Tasker on 5.1:
https://plus.google.com/+DenHil/posts/g1bwKznW2No
I'd like to know whether it'll work on Moto X Play too?
Any chance that someone try it out on his Moto X Play?
Wave to wake works on all phones. It uses the prox sensor and far as I know its build in every phone. Works with cm and stock roms. For stock rom I use macrodroid to enable it,but tasker should also work.
Thanks,
But whether it's going to work same as the Moto X 2014 / Style? or different behavior

I only owned a nexus 4 and moto g 4g and it all worked the same. In macrodroid you can adjust this by choosing different settings like : proximity far or near, slow wave or fast wave etc.

I owned a Moto G 2013, the feature worked good and removed on 5.1.
Now I have a Droid Turbo which I broke the screen on- which has this feature in the stock system.
it's to expensive now ordering a new screen - so I decided to by 2nd hand MOTO X Play for now.
Currently I'm using an old HTC One S - it's kind of possible enabling such behavior with apps such as acDisplay, Wave to Unlock, Auto screen on, etc. - but the battery drain is insane with them.
Using the method that I mentioned in the first post isn't working.
Generally in the devices that have this feature in the stock system have AMOLED display (most of them), extra-IR sensors and also an extra processor which taking care of sensors behavior.
If you'll try to use this feature on device that doesn't have the above then three things will happen:
1. You're going to use the main IR (proximity) sensor
2. You're going to use the main CPU for getting the data from the sensor
3. As the display isn't AMOLED then the system have to turn the whole display on a not specific pixels
Those will lead to extra battery drain.
Here's again my question, when using Tasker (if it works?) is the behavior on MOTO X Play is same as on other phones that have that feature in the stock system?
And also is the behavior of Moto Display is same (turning the screen on from waving = turning the screen on from taking the phone in the hands)?

Because of this prox standby drain I always use moto display instead. Moto display uses motion sensors and is very battery friendly. I think it works almost the same like the moto x you are talking about and only difference is it uses some other sensors instead.
Edit: Touching the device puts the screen on and i dont know how,but it also works using a flip cover.Maybe because of a magnet sensor. Not sure but it works .
If its all about your battery life (sot) i should run to the shop. If you keep you screen brightness low and adjust the stock governor settings you can reach over 10 hours sot with light usage using greenify and aggressive doze enabled.

it's all about doing the "wave over the phone" gesture and getting the screen turned on with the clock and the circle in the middle without draining my battery in few hours

Few hours? If i use the proximity sensor i still get around 7/8 hours. It drains around 5% battery a day and not a big deal for the battery shipped with the x play.
Try Glance Plus app. I currently using this one in favour of Moto display. It has proximity sensor detection built in.

why compromising on feature that originally worked on Moto X 2013 4.4.4 and removed on 5.1?
I found that there's a modded MotoActions.apk that I can install and use the "chop twice for flash light" feature which removed also in Moto X Play.
So the Wave to wake feature can be brought back, as it already worked in Moto X 2013

Maybe you can better buy a moto x instead if your looking for exact the same features, because its not the same device. You can also think the huge battery is a great compromise for the functions you are missing and can be replaced using other apps and sensors, but the battery aint. Just my opinion.

I will buy Moto Z
But for now I have this device...
"Buy Moto X if you want XXX function" is kind of "iOS" style answer
As I mentioned
1. Motorola removed this feature on Moto X 2013 on 5.1,
2. Moto X 2013 don't have extra IR sensors
3. There's modded MotoActions.apk which brings the "chop twice for flash light" back to Moto X Play
The conclusion is simple - it's possible bringing the "wave to wake" feature to the MotoActions.apk - just need a developer to do it (Same as with "chop twice")
What answer do you wanna hear ? Seems like you are looking for an answer that you already know. All functions you mentioned are working on a similar way. Camera is double twist or press power button twice to take a quick picture and the moto display also works perfect and doent drain the battery, but you just want the exact same features on a different device and telling me its an ios style answer. Maybe i can place the ir sensors in the mxp with some special magic for you , if thats what you wanna hear.

If you want "wave to wake", use something like "Gravity Screen" from the Play Store (or any of the other dozen alternatives) or a custom ROM that has it baked-in. I'm using the unofficial Temasek's "Ambient Display" and its options for it and that's been working very well for me.
I'm sure there's battery drain but it seems pretty minimal, I don't even consider it.
BTW, comparing this situation to the X 2013 doesn't work - that device has completely different guts (SoC/chipset, screen tech, etc.) than the MXP. When I was on stock I've tried the modified MotoActions.apk before and the chop-chop was terrible, not even close to how smoothly it worked on the 2013 which would be another indication that things are different under the hood. Even the Temasek ROM has it (double chop gesture) and I have it turned off because it just doesn't work well.
