Increase 4g speed by disabling mobile connections optimizer? - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 General

So I just disabled connections optimizer because I was having issues with my hotspot and I get 2-3 times faster 4g LTE speeds now. Call me crazy but it's true, I've tested it by turning it back on and the speed goes back down!!! Anyone else want to test to confirm if it's a fluke or if we are really being throttled by sprint?

Speeds are crap here :/

Connection optimizer tries to pick the "best" connection available, switching connections in the background. I've always turned it off because it prioritizes wi-fi above all others (even when the available wifi connections are considerably slower than the 4G in the area). I think it may have even connected automatically to open wifi hotspots that I had never used before (it's been too long for me to be sure on that point, though). Even when it ultimately decided to stick with the 4G connection, the moment that it took to check other connections would interrupt many downloads and slow down those that managed to keep going - perhaps that's the issue you were experiencing...
But with it turned off, you should enjoy better battery life as well

Thanks for the details. I see that the second post is showing very high download speeds. Why are you saying they are crap?
In reply to the styles 420, I wasn't experiencing overall issues, I just noticed an immediate LTE improvement after I disabled sprint optimizer. When I turned it back off immediate decline. Speed test with connections optimizer on would be around 3mb/s, immediately after turning off optimizer, standing in the exact same location, my speeds are 7-9 mb/s. Please more people test this to see if you see an improvement, doing a before and after a few times with connections optimizer on and off for mobile.

bump - someone else please try this need at least 5-10 people to try.

Turning mine on and off changed it a little bit.
Turned on top pic and bottom pic is turned off. only.

Wow good news that's over triple increase in upload 33% increase in download! Thanking you for the post, anyone else please share?

If you are having problems with your hotspot I found a useful app that stops it from breaking up. "Connections Optimizer" stops disconnections and if the connection is forced off it reconnects more quickly (works best with super access ). At home I make my hotspot through my PC with pda.net. through the hotspot my speeds are actually double what they are through mobile data.

Well piggy where my lte speed is supposed to be way faster i use my wifi in my house. Lte sucks here.

Ya to me my 5-10 mb LTE is bad because I have 170 at home but for people who use LTE a lot outside like me it is a big deal. other people please post your before and after connections optimizer speeds we are seeing big improvements.

This thread isn't about hot spot it is about connections optimizer actually throttling your Internet speed. If you can please post before and after speeds with connections optimizer on and off, testing from your phone with speed test.

My LTE sucks here as well. It depends on the time of day I use it. I can't even use the connections optimizer anymore. If I don't disable it my connection gets interrupted every 10 minutes or so. I use 100gb+ from Sprints network every month so they dial me back. I get around it by installing a new ROM or resetting the SCRTN often. I think that the device is programmed to remember home (where you spend most of your time) and it dials it back there. A new ROM will get up to 10mbs for a day or so and then it kicks back to .5 - 1.5 at home. If I go somewhere else it jumps up to 20.
I don't have WiFi at home right now. If you read the description in the optimizer it says it is designed for the smart switch. So, unless you are somewhere that there is WiFi for it to switch in and out of it does no good.
Read op on Google's policies for WiFi. You will be surprised to find what they say about it. Unless you opt out devices are allowed to make quick connections to anyone's router.

Ya that's normal for 4g to go up and down depending on where you are and how much data you have used. But good to know that your speed does go up with connections optimizer off!!! That's 4/4 people I belive? Anyone else care to test before and after speeds in same location?

I tried it out to get you the picture you requested. I did 4 tests. I was actually getting better speeds with the optimizer on. The forth one didn't show in the total. In my screenshot 1 and 3 are with the optimizer off and 2 is with it on. It's 1mb faster with it on. I'll try again later when I'm not at home.
The 1mb isn't worth leaving it on when it's not plugged in because of battery usage from having to leave the GPS. Also, I don't use it because I get interrupted every few minutes with a notification saying connections optimizer has stopped.

HSDPA Nexus One users (tips, battery optimisation & stats, signal, etc..)

Hi,
I'm starting this thread to collect informations about using the N1 on a HSDPA network. Over the next weeks I'll be posting stats and infos about my experience on a HSDPA network.
*-----------------------------------------------------*
Tips
*-----------------------------------------------------*
(reserved)
*-----------------------------------------------------*
Battery optimization
*-----------------------------------------------------*
HSDPA seems to be very hard on the battery, and to get the most of your N1 there will be some sacrifice.
What COULD help:
- Dial *#*#4636#*#* and set the phone to "WCDMA Only" in the phone informations.
- Try the app called "battery refresh" on the android store. It will discharge your phone. Then boot into recovery and wipe your battery stats.
- Install setCPU from the android store (1$) and force it to 245/576 while the phone is standby/sleep (thanks djmcnz)
- there's an app on the appstore called JuiceDefender that allow you to disable APN based on time or your location.
What WILL help
- disable sync (push). This have a MAJOR impact on HSDPA network
- and obliviously set brightness to auto or lowest acceptable value.
*-----------------------------------------------------*
Signal optimization
*-----------------------------------------------------*
So far I've tried two different radio rom, and the older 4.03.00.21_2 seem to offer better signal. So you could try using that one.
*-----------------------------------------------------*
Bandwith optimization
*-----------------------------------------------------*
- If you have a rooted N1, you could try in "spare parts" the hotweiss's Radio mod (in miscellaneous). In my case, there's not difference but still could be worth a try.
*-----------------------------------------------------*
N.B. : Fellow canadians, if you are on Bell or Telus with your N1, your are on a HSDPA network.

You could try JuiceDefender, I think that app does exactly that.
I seem to get alot of network connection errors from market, to internet, and some games that use internet.
I noticed my signal is usally full bars but switches alot between 3G and H (HSDPA)
Are my connections errors due to the switching of 3G and H much like some people have issues with EDGE and 3G switching back and forth in certain spots?
Also that *#*#4636#*#* didn't work. EDIT: nevermind, needs to be done on the stock dialer.
I set my network from WCDMA prefered to WCDMA only. See how that works. EDIT: Still switches from 3G to HSDPA...

I believe this is normal behavior. The 'WCDMA only' option disables EDGE network connections so that you only use the 3G/HSDPA.
Cheers
I hope there is a bug on the N1 radios..Cause I can't last 20hrs with 1hr worth of calls..and small use of internet. Yet other people saying they easily go pass 30hrs with heavy use...liars..
I can still get though a full day, business and pleasure on a single charge using HSDPA, WiFi and making calls... lots of calls.
In an average (16h) day I will be connected via 3G for about 10 of those and WiFi for the remaining six. I make about 180 mins of calls a day, 20% of those using the speaker, I have a feed reader with 20 feeds that update constantly, I listen to music to and form work (20mins + 20mins), I might play a game or two and I often read xda and/or download during the day. Brightness at about 55% fixed.
I charge my phone overnight, every night (have been doing this since my original RAZR anyway).
I have never, ever run out of battery during a given day.
Setting the CPU to min in standby is not a good idea - it needs some headroom to actually complete background tasks and 245 is too low IMHO and will be counter-productive. I suggest 245/576.
If your usage is much above mine then I'm not sure how many marginal tips will be needed before it makes a meaningful difference...

HD2 HSDPA/WiFi speedtest slow

My ADSL connection can do 13Mb download & 1Mb upload, all computers achieve (also on wireless) this using either speedtest.bbmax.co.uk or speedtest.net. However my HD2 can only achieve 3.5-4Mb max using the same sites, upload is represented correctly. It seems to fly up very quickly then back down, for upload it takes a few seconds to check the speed for both sites. I used Opera 10 (Flash Lite 3).
Also on HSDPA it can only do ~0.5Mb but when tested in dongle it achieves ~2.5Mb, upload is represented correctly (1Mb) for both Vodafone and O2.
I've also tried the wireless N hack but this hasn't improved things.

There is no solution. HD2 performance on WI-FI are just bad. People don't care. The only justification they can give to this is "it's just a phone". Amen.

That sucks, my mates Omnia is also pretty bad on WiFi so I assume this is a WinMo problem?
Also I meant just O2 for 0.5/2.5 HSDPA thing, just checked Vodafone and got 3.5Mb / 1Mb.
Also doesn't the "it's just a phone" thing kinda wear off when you cross the £500 mark?

I agree but these are the people that appear here when you criticize their toy.
Maybe enabling wifi-n will speed it up. I'd at least give that a try.
Also, I did a test, and I get exactly what I get on my laptop which is 5644kbps
I have been having issues with HSDPA on my HD2 for some time. I am with T-mobile UK... what I have found is that when I hard boot/reflash a new rom... HSDPA is full speed. However something triggers what I can only think is a GPRS only mode, at first I thought I had installed apps that affected networking but I don't believe that is the case now.
Yesterday for example I was in a shielded building and had no reception whatsoever... when I came out I could not connect to T-Mobile data so restarted my HD2 a few times then setup data again.... I am connected now but internet connectivity is really slow, I generally stream music but I can't do this and I may as well forget about YouTube.
I have spoken to T-Mobile about this in the past and they said there are no restrictions on my account. I also know (havng proved it before) that by going through the hassle of a hard reset/new rom flash HSDPA with work again.
I wonder if this is IP related but I am not sure how to check the configuration on Winmo. I also am unsure how/where to do a speedtest (Speedtest.net needs an updated version of flash).
Managed to get it sorted out.... sent the Tmobile settings from the Tmobile website to my phone. Then in my ROM (OMEGA) there is a enable 3G mode.... This seems a bit flaky to be honest... Anyway I selected the new Tmobile internet settings option in Connections, then flicked the 3G setting in connection manager on and off a few times...
In the status bar, rather than "G" and a small "G" with reception meter both show as "H" (this will differ to the rom you have probably).... main thing is streaming is back again

I've generally found 3G to be faster than WiFi and even the ping in some situations on WM phones.
my phone also gets around 2 to 3Mbps on the speed test with the wifi.. 700 or so with hspda and 500 or so with 3g.
isnt this the max rate of the memory card? perhaps the phone itself is slowing down the results?

3G speed depends heavily on the mast tech level and how many people are using it.

speedtest.net, Opera 10 mobile, HD2 is slower on WIFI than on Tmous?

First I apologize if this has been covered in another post - I searched but couldn't find and if so a redirect would be appreciated.
I'm trying to determine just how fast data can be pushed through the phone and I've run into some problems.
I'm trying to use speedtest.net to do this and it was working with the stock ROM but since I've been trying different ROMs (3 of them in fact) I always get the error "Missing License Key" in he Speedtest.net window.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this?
Since that one doesn't work I've been using the Speedtest.net mini. That at least gives me up and download speeds.
But I've also found that whne I connect to the internet with WiFi the speeds are almost slower than a decent H connection.
It's rare that I get over 3 down /1.5 up on a WiFi N connection that has 20+Mbit Comcast connection behind it.
Here I'd just like to confirm if everybody else is seeing the same thing:
What dl/ul speeds are your seeing with your HD2 connected to a fast wireless router?
On the stock ROM it wasn't much higher than the 3G.
Not for me, I usually get 13-14 Mbps down/ 50 kBps (stupid cable upload speeds) up on wifi and around 1.8 Mbps down/ 1.5 Mbps up on HSXPA/UMTS.
I personally have very little faith in the reliability of numbers from speedtest.net
Try testing this way...use IE instead of opera, and go to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest (it wont run in opera but will in IE). When I use that method while connected to my home wifi, I get the exact same speed my desktop gets using the same dsl source (just a hair over 5MB down), which my 3g connection here has yet to match...usually caps out at around 3MB or so.
I've seen the same behaviour as the OP.
My Wi-fi speeds are slower than my HSPA speeds.
I had same issue as well. I had bsb tweaks installed. I disabled the wifi n tweak. after that both my 3g and wifi speeds went up. Re-enabled the tweak to see if speeds would be reduced and this time only the wifi speeds increased again. tweak must of been causing some sort of issue with the 3g and wifi speeds. Try disabling it, soft reset and than re-enable the tweak. Hopefully it works for you as it did for me.

Which ROM are you using and how much faster is it? Do you see a large speed difference with a different ROM between a fast WiFi and 3g/h?
The only real difference I noticed between the stock and 3 other ROMS I've installed so far is that I wasted a long time trying to get WiFi working in KAOS but never could. I was able to get a connection but the client never reported an IP address. Turns out the ROM I was using was not specifically for the TMOUS HD2 so maybe that was the cause.

Thanks, that was an excellent suggestion; I hadn't tried this particular site before and while it uses the same data as speedtest.net it also allows a specific destination and works with IE.
In random testing on WiFi I got around 7-8Mb down, 3 Mb up. While driving around the local area I got 5 bars from two different towers and found an average 1.0Mb dl, 0.8Mb up, and that was pretty constant whether moving or stopped.
I've also noticed in general that the "H" only appears whenever data is actually being transferred (sounds like our back-end hasn't been upgraded). Right now I can get neither the speedtest.net nor the mini version to work - the windows just stay white.
I'll keep trying both of them to compare over the next few weeks but I think the biggest part of the problem is Adobe Flash. There is a reason why Apple doesn't support them and I don't think it's all political like Adobe would have us believe.
I've also done some more experimenting with mobilespeedtest.com as well as general testing over the past few days.
Mobile speed test shows that IE seems to be faster/more stable than Opera - by probably 5 to 20%. While the absolute numbers had alot of variability, Opera was unable to complete the 5 MB and 7 MB tests at all; the browser window just remained blank.
The other thing to throw in here while trying to clean up the phone I found the post about doing a hard reset and that also seemed to help. I don't have any solid data but I would certainly hard reset it again and recommend it to anyone that has changed ROMS much or done a lot of installing/deinstalling of cabs.

I don't have BSB tweaks installed currently but I performed the WirelessN tweak in the registry. Based on what you've said here I went back and switched it off, did a soft reset, tested and then back on and retested, and found no dramatic difference between any of them. What I found was a lot of variability between the tests in the same setting - even one right after the other. (I would probably do well to review the wireless router settings to see if I can up the data throughput rate.)
To compare I checked a notebook using N located at about the same distance from the router and got speeds a little (5-10%) faster than on the phone (-hardwired into the router I get 25Mbps down). This tells me the phone is as optimized as it's going to be going through my router.
So on the phone I see final scores of about 7-8Mbps down, 2-3 up, with spikes over 10 Mbps down and 4 up during the tests.
Deeted - error post
I tried "mobilespeedtest.com" and get around 1100-1300 kbps on wifi and the same or more when wifi off and using t-mobile (with "H" showing, not 3g).
speakeasy/speedtest on wifi 3421 kbps, off wifi , 3569 kbps (3.57mbps)

No, Not on the Stock ROM.
Like Opera Mini and Skyfire, I think Opera Mobile 10 goes through an external server. One cannot get an accurate speed test that way. Use Opera 9, or better IE, as it works with flash speed tests as well, not only the mobile ones.

3G plus wifi?

I am kinda having some crazy stuff going on. First does anyone have a good website to check download speeds? I am using I.dslr.net/tinyspeedtest.HTML.
I pick the 3G test I get about 300-600 Kbps for a download speed. The crazy thing is if I turn on my wifi, but DO NOT CONNECT to a network I get 1600-1800 Kbps. I have tested and retested many times no matter what if I have the wifi turned on I always get a faster speed. I know I am not connected to a network because A. When I do connect to my home wireless I get about 4000 Kbps. B. I have tested this when there are no networks around.
I guess cool if I am really getting those speeds which it looks like I am because even the latency probes are fast, my concern is having the wifi on all the time will eat up my battery even more.
So I would like some feed back on what others are using to do speed tests and also does this happen to anyone else?
I am on joshes fast and stable rom.

Nexus 4: radios behaving badly

The one thing that's keeping me from fully enjoying my new Nexus 4---hassles with radios, both wifi & cellular.
1) On my home wifi network on all devices except the Nexus 4 I see solid, constant download speeds of 25Mbps. My Nexus 4 consistently only gives me 4-6Mbps. If I disconnect/reconnect sometimes I can see speeds slightly higher than that, but only temporarily. This isn't generally a huge deal because 4-6Mbps is fast enough for most things on a phone, it just bugs me that every other device in the house gets 25Mbps.
2) Of bigger annoyance is my cellular data connection, it drops off multiple times per day. The cellular signal strength indicates full bars, along with the 'H' icon indicating I'm connected to T-Mobiles HSPA+ network. Voice still works fine but the data connection is dead--nothing will connect--Speedtest, maps, Google Search, Facebook, etc. This forces me to either turn on/off Airplane mode or reboot the phone completely to regain my cellular data connection. On my previous SGS2 I never experienced this issue. It drives me nuts to not be able to pull up a phone number, directions etc at the times I need it most.
Does anybody have any similar experiences or suggestions on how to remedy these issues?
Edit---FYI I'm fully stock but rooted. 4.2.1 update not yet applied.
1) Check APN settings and make sure your account is properly provisioned by calling T-Mo CSRs. I had a similar issue with my Nexus One back in the day that was fixed with a reboot after they reprovisioned my account.
2) Flash factory image, in case it was a bad flash of the radio. It happens.
3) If 1 & 2 fails, or you don't want to try #2, call the Nexus hotline and get yourself a replacement.

Called TMobile and had them reset my account, I'll keep an eye on it the next couple of days.
Right now I'm downloading a cached Google map via WiFi and it is slooooow.
I also notice on edge the signal is inconsistent.
Hi
The Wi-Fi issue is something happening to others, seems to be a driver bug.

Wifi connectivity is my biggest gripe. I'll step 6 feet away from my router and I lose a bar. A couple rooms away I fluctuate between 1 and 0 bars.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Did you ever find a cure for this? I am having the exact same issues on my O2UK Nexus 4, anytime I want to use the data connection its almost guaranteed not to work and involve reboots, Airplane mode on and off etc
Im having the same issues. My data just drops wifi and cellular. I dont get full signal wifi or cellular. I live in india and flashed the latest .54 which was released in india recently. I managed to at least get cellular data going but my strength still low and data drops still on both wifi and cellular. Its super frustrating. Any ideas?
try reflashing the OS on your phone and try changing the wifi channel on your router.
changing the channel on my wireless router really helped signal to all of my devices. there may be lots of interference on the channel you're on.

I may reflash OS but i just got the phone today so ill slow down a bit. I flashed the radio one would think that would be enough? Anyway I have many other devices on my wifi without an issue and i used wifi analyser and theres no overlap with other routers and i experience this on 2g 3g and wifi so it looks like some modem problem. Unfortunately the phone was bought 3 months ago in the States and im here in india so im kind of stuck
There are known issues with the Nexus 4 wifi speeds slowing for no apparent reason. Also, known issues with the LOS (loss of signal). You can find information and bug reports on both of these issues.

I dad see some threads reporting this issue. Unfortunately i dont see any solutions or resolved threads. Additionally people either have it they dont as i see it i cant see people witching sides. Its just a little frustrating. Any opinions on whether kernel swapping will help?
Did a full flash from scratch. No progress. Also i went to my friends place and signal was perfect for like 4 hrs straight but every other place ive been since has seen choppy signal.

Wifi connectivity is my biggest gripe. I'll step 6 feet away from my router and I lose a bar. A couple rooms away I fluctuate between 1 and 0 bars.

Pretty bad. I ran a test a few weeks ago and I can go up to 450 feet from my router (old Linksys) without a problem, and after that it gets iffy, and finally disconnects at 500 feet. I am seeing an average of 20 Mbps on wifi. Now if I can only get my cellular connection (non-wifi) to go faster than 1 Mpbs max I would have a usable phone.
I have a slightly diff issue.
If I reboot my phone, I connect to my router no problem. If I turn wifi off (to save battery) and then turn it back on.... it shows my AP's as out of range.... but I do see my neighbours AP's. I also have an N10 with has no issues at all with wifi (and none of my other divises have issues either).
When I bought the N4 they seemed to be having an issue with it when setting it up.... but I was not paying close attention. I am wondering if I have a bad phone on top of the "normal" wifi issues that other are experiencing.
Think I will revert back to stock and swap it for another phone to see if I can at least just turn off / on the wifi rather then reboot to connect (how sad is that?)

**** UPDATE ****
I picked up a cheap belkin router and set it to AP mode.
My N4 has no issues at all with it. Connects when I want it to right away and is fast / solid connection.
