Nexus 7 MultiROM problem while starting Ubuntu Desktop - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Community,
When i try to start the Ubuntu Desktop OS for Nexus 7 i get the following error:
Code:
mount: mounting /dev/mmcblk0p9 on /root failed: No such device
Could not mount the partition /dev/mmcblk0p9.
This could also happen if the file system is not clean because of an operating system crash, an interrupted boot process, an improper shutdown, or unplugging of a removeable device without first unmounting or ejecting it. (filesystem = f2fs, error code = 255)
BusyBox v1.20.2 (Ubunti 1:1.20.0-8ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs) _
The file system is according to TWRP ext4.
Any ideas what i could do to get this working?

I also got the same error. It's probably because the newer version of multirom doesn't support it. Try multirom v28. It worked for me.

Hi, I also got the same.
Did you try with multirom v28 or if you have found some other solution I would be happy to try as well Thanks

I get the same error even after installing Multirom v28. Any ideas? I didn't have this problem before and I was using Multirom v32 but suddenly the installed Ubuntu showed this error after boot. I thought that deleting ubuntu and installing again will help but it didn't.

Minimal UI for LUKS encryption on the Wildfire

This is a basic gui I wrote to unlock my encrypted partitions during boot.
I'm running my /data and /sdcard partitions encrypted, and the "luksunlock" binary is launched from init.rc to read the password and unlock the encrypted partitions.
I have included my somewhat modified init.rc for those interested.
For more information about LUKS on Android see this blogpost, written by shawn (Seems I'm not allowed to have urls in the post, but Google for 'android luks' , first hit)
This works good on Wildfire, altough it should work fine on other phones as well. Just remember that you need to set up your partitions as in the luksunlock.c (or change the defines).
Dont forget to backup before you start playing around!
Good luck!
Thanks! i'll give a try!
Hi,
I tried to use your cryptsetup binary from your blog, but I have some issues that you'll sure have an answer:
I run ./cryptsetup luksFormat -c aes-plain /dev/block/loop2 and after i put the luks password it says 'Command failed', no logs, no other output, even using the -v flag...
Any clue?
Thanks in advance!
PS: the module dm-crypt is necessary for cryptsetup? could be this the error? I don't have it installed on the system because I can't find it for 2.6.35.9-cyanogenmod

CM6.1 for wildfire uses a 2.6.32 kernel (see HCDR.jacob's post about his custom kernel for more info)

Yeah you really need dm-crypt support, either compiled into the kernel or as a module. You also need the AES ciphers support.

Hi! Yeah, that's what I was afraid of.... ok, but the problem is that i'm running CM6.1 with 2.6.35.9 which has no dm-crypt module neither compiled in kernel... where can i find some kernel with this modules included? Is for an HTC Desire (@Sympnotic )
Thanks in advance!
Great work and thanks for sharing @Sigkill. Working on building it here for my NexusOne with CM6.1.
BTW, I’m the lead on a project working on general secure Android distro – we’ve ported Tor, have an OTR IM app, and have supported other projects along those lines. Would love to talk more about supporting anyone working on this specific capability.
wow! awesome work!!! Very exciting news. Gonna give this a go on my MyTouch Slide

Seems really nice. I like the secure phone concept.
New Makefile and wiki info up
_hc from the @guardianproject has a new build process up for Crypsetup/LUKS which includes a Makefile compatible with Android NDK r5.
We have new instructions up on our wiki, as well.
I cannot post links under this account, but you can find the info on github if you search "LUKS" or just under our guardianproject account.
How did you create the encrypted partitions? Could you give some pointers for that. I am familiar with using dmcrypt/cryptsetup on desktop linux, I guess this works similar. What are the relevant device names? Did you run into any problems?

Hi, sorry for the late answer,
/dev/block/mtdblock5 is the "userdata" partition. I formatted it and mount it to /encrypted-data during init:
mount yaffs2 [email protected] /encrypted-data nosuid nodev
The only file on this partition is "data.encrypted" file, which gets created in init.rc as a loopback device:
exec /system/bin/losetup /dev/block/loop0 /encrypted-data/data.encrypted
I created the "data.encrypted" file on my computer with cryptsetup and losetup, and copied all files from my old unencrypted userdata partition to it and then copied it back as a file to the formated userdata partition.
The sdcard "/dev/block/mmcblk0p2" partition is formated with "cryptsetup luksFormat", I did this also on my computer, saves some time. And then copy everything from the old unencrypted sdcard.
I did run in to one problem recently, my phone hung during boot, about 4 months after I started encrypting my phone.
Had to copy my data.encrypted file to my computer, mount it as a loopback device and do a fsck, and then copy it back to my phone.
I suspect this has to do with the filesystem not being umounted properly. (I have had this on my to do list for a while hehe)
Probably should make a script run during shutdown to cleanly "luksClose" the encrypted partition and then umount them. Not doing this is probably very crazy
I also want to fix it so my "/dev/block/mmcblk0p2" partition gets presented to my computer when i attach my usb cable (as it should do), so i can unlock it in ubuntu and copy images and files. Right now i have to take my memorycard out and put it into the computer.
I hope this post makes sense, it was written in haste =) Good luck!

I figured most of that out without your post and tried it on my desire (I created the luks partitions with adb on the phone though, worked anyway ). Then I couldn't figure out where my regular init.rc is stored (I could only find the one used by Clockwork Recovery), and then I figured I already spent enough time, tried a reboot (which of course didn't work). Then I couldn't even get into recovery (probably because its init.rc tries to mount /data which doesn't work? I didn't investigate any further). Flashed my backup with fastboot and was stuck again with my un-encrypted pre-experiment state
Oddly enough, it was no problem to unlock my encrypted SD-card from my computer (running ubuntu) while in recovery (clockword has an option to present the sd card to a computer connected via usb). Maybe the booted system handles this differently than recovery though? I didn't get a chance to try, as I couldn't boot after my encryption attempt.
I will try again after my algorithm and data structure exam this friday and report back
Is anybody using the UI on another device than the Wildfire? Does it work?
How much is the performance drain when using an encrypted /data partition?
Amazing work!
Did anyone manage to make sigkill1337's luksunlock build from source ?
I would like to change the path of the data/sdcard partitions to match my device but I tried many ways using the NDK and I can't get it to compile properly.
Is there any way to do this ?
I have been trying for days, I am getting literaly insane !
@sigkill1337 : could you give me some pointers ? I would appreciate a lot.
mount manpage said:
The bind mounts.
Since Linux 2.4.0 it is possible to remount part of the file hierarchy somewhere else. The call is
mount --bind olddir newdir
or shortoption
mount -B olddir newdir
or fstab entry is:
/olddir /newdir none bind
After this call the same contents is accessible in two places. One can also remount a single file (on a single file).
This call attaches only (part of) a single filesystem, not possible submounts. The entire file hierarchy including submounts is attached a second place using
mount --rbind olddir newdir
or shortoption
mount -R olddir newdir
Note that the filesystem mount options will remain the same as those on the original mount point, and cannot be changed by passing the -o option along with --bind/--rbind. The mount options can be changed by a separate remount command, for example:
mount --bind olddir newdir
mount -o remount,ro newdir

If nothing helps, you should always be able to bindmount it
I'd rather get sigkill1337's UI to compile...
Lots of nice security tweaks and settings could be done with a pre-boot GUI
Anyway, concerning encryption, I'll use the bind option for now, thanks for the tip.
But if anyone here could give me some pointers about compiling this stuff it would be great.
I managed to compile it by integrating luksunlock in Android source externals and main.mk but when I push it to my phone and modify init.rc to call it, it just does not work...
Other modifications are working (mount, mkdir, etc.) but the GUI won't show up
Sorry for the late reply.. But you could try running it from a shell when the phone is booted, just to verify that the binary starts (thats how I tested it without having to reboot my phone all the time)
My environment for building the source was setup using one of the tutorials online, nothing out of the ordinary
Im still running this on my phone, for almost 8 months now, I havent noticed that much in performance problems, the Wildfire was slow before i started using luks.
When i get a new phone (maybe SE Arc) i will be easier to see if performance is affected
There is an Issue for getting CM support for encrypted filesystems during boot:
Issue 2736: support encrypted filesystem from boot
If you want to get that feature, just "star" it, so it may get more attention.

Debian Squeeze on GT540

Hi,
I start this thread to speak about natively running Debian Squeeze on LG Optimus GT540.
I have put somme script to bootstrap complete installation on sdcard on :
poivron.org/~jimpulse/swift
Please read README first.
Kernel is 2.6.29 from lge source with minors modifications :
* lge source don't compile properly ( this is not what is distribute as binnary ?GPL violation? ).
* Framebuffer console on startup.
* Software refreshing enable.
* Race condition on mddi register function when using software refresher
* Inkernel command line.
* ext3fs
Kernel debian packages are in swift/kernel
the boot image is in swift/boot and is reconstruct at end of bootstrap.
Lxde environement with matchbox-window-manager and matchbox-keyboard is working fine for me.
Slim is used as display manager in autologin mode.
Freesmartphone is installed but not configured (TODO)
Wifi (4325) is working but module is not loaded on startup. The firmware is from lge source distribution but is the same as on binary distribution.
Bluetooth (?4325?) is not working. (blueman need dpkg --configure at first startup). (TODO)
Enjoy.

You don't have permission to access /~jimpulse/swift/README on this server.

Sory, I"m noob !
Now, It's working.
I didnt understand how it's booting. What should i do. Just flash boot.img to recovery then boot from it? Is it enough or what should i do can you write it step by step?
Hi,
You must install debian on first partition of your sdcard.
The partition must be ext2 or ext3 formated (preferably ext3).
The script 'bootstrap.sh' is make for that, you have to be root to use it.
the card must be mounted with suid, dev, exec .
you must have installed somme packages on your host, read README file.

hi there,
so its something like a dual boot ?
something like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408824.
Hi,
It is not dualboot by itself.
It is just a scritp to install Debian Squeeze armel on sdcard and build a boot image.
More explanation :
!!! Please, dont run the script if your dont understand what it do !!!
You have to edit the script to match your preference :
ROOT=<the target directory where to install to>
ROOTDEV=<Name of the device were your phone will look to find root filesystem>
This script is tested only on Ubuntu oneiric but should work on other debian-like distros.
You can format your sdcard like this : sudo mkfs.ext3 -L swift /dev/XXX
where XXX is the device file corresponding to the partition you want to format. You can figure out that by looking at kernel message after inserting the sdcard : dmesg
Eject and reinsert the card to mount the new filesystem.
Remount the filesystem with apropriate options : sudo mount -o remount, exec, suid, dev /media/swift (or wherether your filesystem is mounted).
So, change ROOT= variable as ROOT=/media/swift (or whatether ...)
and ROOTDEV=/dev/mmcblk0p1 (for the first partition of the sdcard)
Then run in the swift/ directory : sudo ./bootstrap.sh
If all is right, it take aprox 4 hours on my [email protected] to download and install everything.
After installation, you have choice to flash the boot rom (eg : sudo fastboot flash recovery /media/swift/boot/boot.img-2.6.29-swift) or to use it as chroot environnement from android.

I'm always having problem with the script. Now im starting again. I hope it will done this time... And can you use a .35 kernel for this?
Hi,
I'm planning to include .35 kernel, but I dont know which one to use. I've start a thread to ask people there preferences. Kernel need minor modification to have frame buffer console working.
If you have probleme with the script, post last few line of output and I will try to help.

I have the mismatch size problem with the one of xorg-bla-bla packages By the way Mikegapinski's kernel is good to work i think.
Edit:
And does this make a problem?

These two warning are not a problem, these are only because dpkg/status is not complete before installing dpkg. It's a bootstrap edge effect (dpkg need dpkg to be installed).
If the script don't run until the end, you should have a phase number given at end of output. You can skip already ran phase by passing a phase number as parameter to the script.
The xserver-xorg-core problem is about dependencies against all video driver. So I mangle the control file to remove these dependencies. Perhaps this can fail if debian repo version has changed.

Hi,
The default password for root is root .
There is no sudo preinstalled so use su.
Firmware and nvram settings are in /etc/wl as for android names rte.bin and nvram.txt .
You have to pass parameters at load time :
modprobe wireless firmware_path=/etc/wl/rtecdc.bin nvram_path=/etc/wl/nvram.txt
or put this in /etc/modprobe.d/wireless.conf :
alias wlan0 wireless
options wireless firmware_path=/etc/wl/rtecdc.bin nvram_path=/etc/wl/nvram.txt
Wicd is not working correctly so you have to configure by hand
(iwconfig and ifconfig) or edit /etc/network/interfaces. (view debian administration guide for that).
I will update the script tomorrow to add a configuration file for modprobe and an alias to wlan0.

Thanks for these and how can i access the command line from my computer?
Hi,
Sorry, but I've forget to put openssh on package list. I'he also froget to add debian repo to sources.list .
Edit /etc/apt/sources.list with nano or vi and add a line with :
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main
then run apt-get update
You have to use the lxde terminal to configure wireless and install openssh-server (apt-get install openssh-server).
After that, you will be able to connect with ssh (ssh [email protected]<IP ADDRESS>) from your computer.
adbd is not working and need some tweak to work with debian.
--
Jim
Hi,
I've update bootstrap.sh :
* openssh-server and openssh-client are installed per default
* sources.list is now created durring bootstrap with same repo that the bootstrap process used.
* modprobe is configured to pass correct parameters to wireless module. There is also ans alias wlan0 ponting to wireless.
* network/interfaces is update to have the loopback interface configured at boottime. The configuration for wlan0 must be tweak for your network (essid, dhcp or static ...) .
Now, I'm working on 2.6.35 from wingrime and hope to publish it next week.

Yeah i wonder it too. I is so good to have debian on my phone. It'll be more usable with a touchscreen gui. It doesn't lag more. I think you should change the keyboard to a bigger. And we should can rotate screen. At least with running a sh file from terminal By the way you're great! I think this is gonna be awesome for our phones...

Acer A200 - BRICKED, cannot mount /data /sdcard

I did something stupid. Got an A200 that could not get OTA 4.0.3, so I managed to get it updated manually. However, I then proceeded to try to root it using the "SimpleRoot" scripts on Acertabletforum, and at this point, the thing is bricked. In Recovery, I cannot get anything to mount. /SDCard, /data, etc
Bootloader is Unlocked
I tried with some different Recoveries with slightly different results:
1) Hbwelch CWM v5.5.0.4 (the one that comes with SimpleTool) - All mounting attempts fail
2) nics-TWRP_stable (twrp v 2.1.4) - Seems to be able to mount System and Cache, but not DATA or SDCARD (Internal or External)
3) thor v 5.5.0x (thor2002ro rev1.7) - errors mounting data, sdcard and /mnt/sdcard. Is able to mount system, cache, flexrom and flex.
Any idea how to fix it? I am afraid that if I try to return the tablet where I bought it as it is now, it will get rejected. (even though the damn thing was supposed to be ICS upgradable in the first place, but wasn't... long story)
Thanks
Jerry
I finally got the tablet working again. Was very close to sending it back. Got bits and pieces of info from various other posts on this forum and on acertabletforum. For the sake of anyone else that may find this thread, here are a few things that were wrong, and how to fix them
(I cannot post outside links, so just google the file names when relevant)
1) /SDCard would not mount. Solution - PARTITION the SD card. NOTE: The card worked on a PC, and even on that tablet when Android was fully booted. However it would NOT mount in recovery until I explicitly partitioned it. Doing a FORMAT on the PC does NOT count. I had to partition it within Recovery.
NOTE: This may also be why people are unable to get the update.zip thing working.
2) /Data would not mount - I have no idea how this got screwed up, but the solution was:
* Connect the tablet to the PC in RECOVERY. At this point, ADB should work. If not, check the drivers on the PC - I had to manually specify the Acer ADB Composite driver.
* Open a Command prompt window
* Start ADB shell by typing:
ADB SHELL
* Now execute the following:
mke2fs -j -b 4096 /dev/block/mmcblk0p8
tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index -C 1 /dev/block/mmcblk0p8
e2fsck -fy /dev/block/mmcblk0p8
After this is done your file system on /data will be fixed. (solution posted by spoupard on XDA-Developers.com)
3) Putting it all together:
* Flashed the BOOT partition with Honeycomb 3.2.1_boot.img
* Flashed the RECOVERY partition with nics-TWRP_stable.img
* At this point, I noticed that the Bootloader was once again LOCKED. So, start into FASTBOOT mode and execute the following from the command prompt again:
fastboot oem unlock
* Re-Start in Recovery and select MOUNT and make sure that everything is mounted. If /SDCARD or /DATA refuse to mount, fix that issue first (step 2 above)
* Now I select to INSTALL Acer_AV041_A200_1.037.00_PA_CUS1.zip
Upon reboot, I noticed that it said "Updating Bootloader", then got the Acer screen and locked up. I restarted again into Recovery and again selected the option to install INSTALL Acer_AV041_A200_1.037.00_PA_CUS1.zip and reboot. This time it restarted, indicated that it has a new version of bootloader (previously was 3.1.3) and proceeded to boot up into Android 4.0.3. At that point, I think my neighbors heard me scream YES!, considering I spent 2 days on this
I hope I got all the steps. Most of it is from memory and some notes, since I did not want to experiment and go through this hell again.
Jerry
Great info but you might want to add fixed to the title. For the time being doesn't look like I will be rooting till these issues are sorted out. I am see too many people saying they are bricking with this root method.

Didn't see a way to edit the title. As for rooting, note that after all was said and done, I am still not rooted. I just managed to get updated to 4.0.3, which should have been done OTA anyway. I may try again now that I am a bit more confident that I can get it back to working state, but will do a full backup in ADB first. Too much of a pain in the *** to have to reconfigure everything again once the OS is installed.
I cannot get the device to connect to my PC at all, or get the correct driver selected. Any tips?

what state is the tablet in when you try to connect? Fastboot, Recovery, or fully booted up and operating?
What do you see in the device manager when the tablet is connected?
ext3 oder ext4?

Try to do this with twrp v.2.1.4: do I use ext3 or ext4 for the Partition? And which size needs the ext Partition?
Thanx

Don't think it matters. I picked the defaults.

Thanx j_medved for yor reply!
So I did and just faced the next problem: I can conect my Tablet to the PC and can finde it with adb devices and can start the shell with adb shell.
But then when I start: mke2fs -j -b 4096 /dev/block/mmcblk0p8
nothing seems to happen....waited about 30 minutes....
in the next turn I get the reply, that mmcblk0p8 is allready in use....next turn again: nothing seems to happen....
any ideas? .-(

teacherhh,
If I remember correctly, that command should finish pretty quick. You may want to try leaving it for a bit longer, but it seems that you may have something else wrong. I am not that familiar with this area. Haven't dealt with Linux much. Sorry.
Okay. Thanx anyway!

Driver Problems
Hi Guys,
I've the same problem. I can't wipe the Data, so I've found this instruction. unfortunenately will my PC not found my Tab. I've installed the drivers many times, but it will not work. Can anybody help, how to install? btw. fastboot is working, but not adb.
I'm using an Samsung Netbook with Win 7. THe PC's trying to install drivers, altough they are already installed, but can'T find any drivers.
If you need more informations, just let me know.
@Benninator,
If you look in Windows 7 Device Manager, does the device show up there OK? Or does it show up as unrecognized device, or as some device code with a yellow triangle and exclamation on it? Or not at all?
Yes, their is a yellow triangle. I've tried to install the driver manually, but with no success. In my driverlist were the Acer driver not listed. furthermore I've tried to configure the usb-adb.ini with also no success. I have absolutly no idea what I can do.
In device manager, and does it show up as a200 or unknown device?
Is the device I am recovery at the time?
And also, and which recovery?
Tab is missing recovery and won't boot in to android

Flashing Now Fails

I've been flashing N7 with no issues as recently as over the weekend. Today I tried to flash a new ROM and it failed. Tried a second, different ROM, same result. Do not know what I did. Any thoughts?
Error log would help greatly.
How do I get/generate the log? Haven't had to do it before.
Thanks,
Paul
The logs= errors displayed on the screen provided by the interface you use to flash the rom (recovery, computer...)
Does this help any?
TWRP V2.4.4.0
Updating partition details
E: Unable to open zip file
Error flashing zop
Updating partition details...
do I need to create a partition? Never get more details despite the tease.
Thanks,
First -
Try and download a different (NEWER) TWRP. Re-flash TWRP. Try again
or
Have you tried completely wiping the device? And pushing a ROM from ADB or using a USB OTG and Memory stick?
I had issues with my nexus becoming VERY unstable. Leading to issues.
I completely, and I mean completely, wiped. To the point that all that device basically had was a recovery, and a bootloader.
I proceeded to flash again, BOOM all fixed up.
Is there a new TWRP?
I did a factory restore after wiping everything thing, if that is what you mean?
It was working as expected last week, don't know what I did to screw it up
Boot recovery try the operation, choose advanced then copy log to sdcard. The paste the log results.

Did this, and it said it copied but I am unable to locate it. It says 0\media\data But that folder structure doesn't exist, at least according to file expert
Will a complete wipe/restore create a partition?

None of the instructions currently found in this forum alters the partitioning of the N7. Not fastboot & not the custom recovery, either.
You are chasing a red herring I think. That message you see is about the recovery performing a scan to check to see if there is a change in file systems (or partitioning of external devices) ... which might have occurred in preceding (custom recovery) operations, but didn't in this particular case.

Focus your efforts here; it certainly looks like a first-order problem.

You can also soft-boot a recovery without actually flashing it, e.g.
Code:
fastboot boot custom-recovery.img
I suppose you could then poke around and see if it is having troubles mounting any of the normal partitions (/data, /system, or /cache). Look in the kernel boot log of the recovery (cat /proc/kmsg or "dmesg") to see if anything looks strange, etc.
There have been a couple of reports from folks who developed problems that looked like eMMC flash media errors - loss of partitions, failure to mount /data, et cetera. At the moment though, your symptoms are very generic and non-specific, as in "it doesn't boot".
I suppose you saw no errors at all reported on the screen during that stock-install-via-fastboot procedure?

The only error is that it can't open the zip. I've tried downgraded TWRP, then upgrading back. Tried flashing the existing rom.
Nothing has worked. The N7 is functional, just will not allow me to flash

Well, if the source material can't be opened, then there is nothing to be flashed.
So maybe it is better to call this a "can't open files" problem instead of a "can't flash" problem.
Are there any special characters in the file name ... or spaces? If so, try renaming the file so the name only contains [a-z], [A-Z], [0-9] plus dash, underscore, and dot.
The other thing that can happen is if you drop a file in /data/media/0 as the root user, it will show up under /sdcard, but can't be read by non-privileged users via the /sdcard/ path. I'm not sure what the exact details are here - much less why this would effect the recovery (as you would expect everything to be running as root there) - but you can detect this problem by using a terminal emulator, and looking for differences in ownership or file permission:
Code:
$ su
# cd /data/media/0
# ls -ld *
use chown and chmod as appropriate to fix files as needed

Thanks bftb, you are correct it's a can't open zip. No error than fail and it can't open the zip. It says updating partition but nothing changes
The file names are from the developers, once of which I recently successfully flashed. Tried coping the log to the SD card, but unable to find /data/media/0. Do I need to recreate a partition?
(FYI there was an auto-correct typo in my prior post - "su" not "such". Derp)

No. (There is no way to do that with the tools we have anyway)
Unless what you mean by "recreate" is rebuild/reinitialize a filesystem in a partition - that's a possibility.
You need to try and figure out why you can't read files.
As a workaround, you can put files on a USB key (FAT formatted, not NTFS) and using TWRP access them by putting the USB key on the other end of a OTG cable.
Your posts are a bit vague - I can't even tell if you have tried other ROM files, whether you checked them to see if they are the correct size/checksum, etc.

At this point, your best approach is still to follow the initial advice of 'ibsk8'. Look in the log file for any further details about errors that occurred.
The logs are typically in /cache/recovery/ or (while the custom recovery is running) in /tmp
Use "adb pull" to get the log file to your PC and have a look at it. If you can't find anything obvious in there, then cut-n-paste the file to http://pastebin.com and provide the link to us.

I am not familiar using ADB pull. Tried using a root file manager to access the log but don't see.
Greatly appreciate your help, let me know what other info I should paste.
