[Q] is there a custom recovery that will work for me

My phone settings
firmware version 2.1-update 1
baseband 63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.14
KERNEL VERSION 2.6.29-36D5CB8D
[email protected] #1
build number 3.35.61.2 cl196735 release-keys
software number 3.35.61.2 browser version webkit 3.1
I have been wanting to install a custom rom on my phone for several months now however no matter what method i try i am unsuccesful closest i have come is using rom manager which allows me to reboot into recovery but once the handset has rebooted home screen and power button just gets me to the triangle on screen and i have to remove battery. all flash recorder methods fail at either back up recovery
or writing flash.
I believe my phone is rooted as i can grant su to rom manager ect and androot tells me i am rooted it is like something resets recovery every time the handset boots into os.
i really have tried every method i have found but dare not try and install anything for fear of recovery not being available to me and i am now wondering if the 2.1 update has blocked something.
please help willing to make donation to any devs that can help me through this as well as the countless others having the same problem
there was one thread here .. try to search it i forget link it can explain you how to root official 2.1 otherwise run RUU & Do downgrade
according to all the programmes i run to check status of root (latest one is under the hood) it lists
Device: htc_hero hero
Root Status: Device routed
ro. build fingerprint: orange_uk/htc_hero/hero/hero:2.1-update1/ERE27/196735:user/release-keys
every programme that requires root access works for me tho i do have to grant it every time for programmes , the clockwork recovery has to be reflashed if phone has been restarted to enable me to access the recovery, and when i do this su pops up telling me it has been granted.
1 method i tried but never got past step backup recovery was this but i get message backup failed could not run command
"HTC Hero Custom Recovery
Step 1:
It's advisable to format the SD Card before do this process. You're going to lose all the information in the SD Card, do a manual backup to your computer of whatever you want, to do it:
Settings -> SD Card & phone storage -> Unmount SD card -> Format SD card
Step 2:
Download the flashrec from http://code.google.com/p/flashrec/
Download the recovery image provided by Paul from http://www.romraid.com/paul/hero/1.2-hero-recovery.zip
Extract the 1.2-hero-recovery.zip to your PC.
Step 3:
Now copy flashrec and recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2.img (wich is inside the .zip file) directly to your SD card
Step 4:
Use an app installer from Google Market to install flashrec, i used ASTRO, but can be any other.
Step 5:
Once installed, open the program, click the button "Backup Recovery Image" and wait to finish, shouldn't take much time, this will do a backup of your actual recovery and put it in your SDCard with the name recovery-backup.img.

You're absolutely right, the 2.1 update for the Hero installs a recovery rom reset, so whenever you boot up your phone normally, it reflashes it (or possibly checks that it's not the original and then flashes).
I don't quite remember where this was done anymore, it might have been a script in /system/bin that gets called from init(rc), called something like flash_recovery.sh. Perhaps someone who isn't running a custom rom could help out and pinpoint it for future reference (I am so not going back from cyanogen 6.0
Edit: I grabbed unyaffs and checked out my old nandroids, it's /system/etc/install-recovery.sh, comment out the line in it (add a # at the beginning of the line) and it will not clobber your custom recovery
i have located file but now i feel really stupid as have not got a clue what to edit it with i am assuming it would be some type of txt editor and if u could specify the line i need to edit out or is it the name of the file i am changing,
really am gratefull for you pointing this out i had guessed what was happening just could find nothing to confirm it.

It might need to be a text editor that knows not to break unix line endings, but you can copy the file (cat file > /path/to/destination/file) to your sdcard or use adb to pull the file... fairly straightforward I thought.
A big thankyou to duck0 for identifying the problem and botoo for getting me to a happy conclusion with the correct commands
SOLUTION IS HERE USING Console mode from windows using ADB USB DEBUGGING HAS TO BE ENABLED WITH HERO CONNECTED TO PC THEN TYPE THE FOLLOWING
THEN ENTER AFTER EACH COMMAND
anyone needing help setting up adb see this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=757233
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
rm /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Thats it all done next step
INSTALL ROM MANAGER FROM MARKET IT IS FREE
open it and sellect flash alternate recovery image from the bottom, you can use the clockwork recovery but it is not compattable with all roms.
once done turn phone off, boot into recovery home + power choose to exit recovery with reboot shut down once again and if you can enter recovery then everything is sweet.

Debian Squeeze on GT540

Hi,
I start this thread to speak about natively running Debian Squeeze on LG Optimus GT540.
I have put somme script to bootstrap complete installation on sdcard on :
poivron.org/~jimpulse/swift
Please read README first.
Kernel is 2.6.29 from lge source with minors modifications :
* lge source don't compile properly ( this is not what is distribute as binnary ?GPL violation? ).
* Framebuffer console on startup.
* Software refreshing enable.
* Race condition on mddi register function when using software refresher
* Inkernel command line.
* ext3fs
Kernel debian packages are in swift/kernel
the boot image is in swift/boot and is reconstruct at end of bootstrap.
Lxde environement with matchbox-window-manager and matchbox-keyboard is working fine for me.
Slim is used as display manager in autologin mode.
Freesmartphone is installed but not configured (TODO)
Wifi (4325) is working but module is not loaded on startup. The firmware is from lge source distribution but is the same as on binary distribution.
Bluetooth (?4325?) is not working. (blueman need dpkg --configure at first startup). (TODO)
Enjoy.

You don't have permission to access /~jimpulse/swift/README on this server.
Says when i try to open README file
Sory, I"m noob !
Now, It's working.
I didnt understand how it's booting. What should i do. Just flash boot.img to recovery then boot from it? Is it enough or what should i do can you write it step by step?
Hi,
You must install debian on first partition of your sdcard.
The partition must be ext2 or ext3 formated (preferably ext3).
The script 'bootstrap.sh' is make for that, you have to be root to use it.
the card must be mounted with suid, dev, exec .
you must have installed somme packages on your host, read README file.

hi there,
so its something like a dual boot ?
something like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408824.
Hi,
It is not dualboot by itself.
It is just a scritp to install Debian Squeeze armel on sdcard and build a boot image.
More explanation :
!!! Please, dont run the script if your dont understand what it do !!!
You have to edit the script to match your preference :
ROOT=<the target directory where to install to>
ROOTDEV=<Name of the device were your phone will look to find root filesystem>
This script is tested only on Ubuntu oneiric but should work on other debian-like distros.
You can format your sdcard like this : sudo mkfs.ext3 -L swift /dev/XXX
where XXX is the device file corresponding to the partition you want to format. You can figure out that by looking at kernel message after inserting the sdcard : dmesg
Eject and reinsert the card to mount the new filesystem.
Remount the filesystem with apropriate options : sudo mount -o remount, exec, suid, dev /media/swift (or wherether your filesystem is mounted).
So, change ROOT= variable as ROOT=/media/swift (or whatether ...)
and ROOTDEV=/dev/mmcblk0p1 (for the first partition of the sdcard)
Then run in the swift/ directory : sudo ./bootstrap.sh
If all is right, it take aprox 4 hours on my [email protected] to download and install everything.
After installation, you have choice to flash the boot rom (eg : sudo fastboot flash recovery /media/swift/boot/boot.img-2.6.29-swift) or to use it as chroot environnement from android.

I'm always having problem with the script. Now im starting again. I hope it will done this time... And can you use a .35 kernel for this?
Hi,
I'm planning to include .35 kernel, but I dont know which one to use. I've start a thread to ask people there preferences. Kernel need minor modification to have frame buffer console working.
If you have probleme with the script, post last few line of output and I will try to help.

I have the mismatch size problem with the one of xorg-bla-bla packages By the way Mikegapinski's kernel is good to work i think.
Edit:
And does this make a problem?
pre-installing dpkg
warning, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 3 package 'dpkg':

These two warning are not a problem, these are only because dpkg/status is not complete before installing dpkg. It's a bootstrap edge effect (dpkg need dpkg to be installed).
If the script don't run until the end, you should have a phase number given at end of output. You can skip already ran phase by passing a phase number as parameter to the script.
The xserver-xorg-core problem is about dependencies against all video driver. So I mangle the control file to remove these dependencies. Perhaps this can fail if debian repo version has changed.

Now i have bootedup but how can iload the wifi module now?
Hi,
The default password for root is root .
There is no sudo preinstalled so use su.
Firmware and nvram settings are in /etc/wl as for android names rte.bin and nvram.txt .
You have to pass parameters at load time :
modprobe wireless firmware_path=/etc/wl/rtecdc.bin nvram_path=/etc/wl/nvram.txt
or put this in /etc/modprobe.d/wireless.conf :
alias wlan0 wireless
options wireless firmware_path=/etc/wl/rtecdc.bin nvram_path=/etc/wl/nvram.txt
Wicd is not working correctly so you have to configure by hand
(iwconfig and ifconfig) or edit /etc/network/interfaces. (view debian administration guide for that).
I will update the script tomorrow to add a configuration file for modprobe and an alias to wlan0.

Thanks for these and how can i access the command line from my computer?
Hi,
Sorry, but I've forget to put openssh on package list. I'he also froget to add debian repo to sources.list .
Edit /etc/apt/sources.list with nano or vi and add a line with :
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main
then run apt-get update
You have to use the lxde terminal to configure wireless and install openssh-server (apt-get install openssh-server).
After that, you will be able to connect with ssh (ssh [email protected]<IP ADDRESS>) from your computer.
adbd is not working and need some tweak to work with debian.
--
Jim
Hi,
I've update bootstrap.sh :
* openssh-server and openssh-client are installed per default
* sources.list is now created durring bootstrap with same repo that the bootstrap process used.
* modprobe is configured to pass correct parameters to wireless module. There is also ans alias wlan0 ponting to wireless.
* network/interfaces is update to have the loopback interface configured at boottime. The configuration for wlan0 must be tweak for your network (essid, dhcp or static ...) .
Now, I'm working on 2.6.35 from wingrime and hope to publish it next week.

Yeah i wonder it too. I is so good to have debian on my phone. It'll be more usable with a touchscreen gui. It doesn't lag more. I think you should change the keyboard to a bigger. And we should can rotate screen. At least with running a sh file from terminal By the way you're great! I think this is gonna be awesome for our phones...

[Q] urgent help please with nook glowlight

Hi. id like you all who are sharing your knowledge through this fantastic forum and special thanks to the developers of this website. ive recieved my nook simple touch with glowlight firmware 1.1.5 just 5 days ago and was successfully rooted. then i wanted to add arabic language so i followed the this method which is mentioned in one thread by using the CWM method after rebooting my device got stuck at the screen of downloading the five dots and the screen was flashing without stopping.
i was so irritated knowing nothing to do and searched the net for any solution but at the end i found one sying that you can try the factory recovery by using CWM method.
my nook worked properly but the problem may be still at when i open my device the flashing at the screen of the dots longs for 4 times then it works properly.
i need your advice for solving this flashing and whats the best solution for making my device read arabic language. another problem is when i want to copy a file using root explorer or es file explorer it says copy failed.
thanks in advance.
answer for the second problem :
mount system partition in r/w mode.
1 option : use 'Rhytm File Manager'
2 option :
- connect via adb
-mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system

Hi Kamal,
Its very important to make a backup of your NSTG!
If you want to restore your device to factory settings, I´ve posted a tutorial with a backup imaged:

Nexus 7 MultiROM problem while starting Ubuntu Desktop

Hello Community,
When i try to start the Ubuntu Desktop OS for Nexus 7 i get the following error:
Code:
mount: mounting /dev/mmcblk0p9 on /root failed: No such device
Could not mount the partition /dev/mmcblk0p9.
This could also happen if the file system is not clean because of an operating system crash, an interrupted boot process, an improper shutdown, or unplugging of a removeable device without first unmounting or ejecting it. (filesystem = f2fs, error code = 255)

The file system is according to TWRP ext4.
Any ideas what i could do to get this working?

I also got the same error. It's probably because the newer version of multirom doesn't support it. Try multirom v28. It worked for me.

Hi, I also got the same.
Did you try with multirom v28 or if you have found some other solution I would be happy to try as well Thanks
I get the same error even after installing Multirom v28. Any ideas? I didn't have this problem before and I was using Multirom v32 but suddenly the installed Ubuntu showed this error after boot. I thought that deleting ubuntu and installing again will help but it didn't.

I made it in Windows yesterday successfully. There is also a way to flash TWRP on Doogee X3 running Android 6.0.
Look here: http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=713470&st=100#entry51434308
The Problem is, I don't understand russian and I even can't type it. Also the Captcha is a major problem. I think there is an account needed to be able to download the board attachments. Otherwise "404" error. Could anyone Download TWRP for Android 6.0 from this site + the scatter file there ? Would be awesome :highfive:
EDIT: I got it and already installed it. it works ! twrp on doogee x3 running android 6.0. just flash it with sp flash tool. you know how if you had flashed 6.0 already
link: http://www18.zippyshare.com/v/yAM5FXOt/file.html
have fun
EDIT: don't try to root it. doesn't work. neither supersu, kingo root nor kingroot. i tried it and my nvram was corrupt after trying with supersu. had to flash back imei and wifi mac address. i'm back on android 5.1 for this device.
Flashing didnt work,it said coudnt find files or path wasnt right,a red line...
after a wile the flash window got black and wite got frosen,i closed it started to reload and then the flash window didnt showed up and the message in the therminal was ...

[at first for everyone to know: it affects Android 6.0 for the Doogee X3. Android 5.1 is no problem.]
root checker told me my device is rooted after I flashed your zip. The problem I experienced was, I got no asking for root triggered by any app which uses root permission. And also when I try to update SuperSU binary inside the app it tells me there is no "su data" and it couldn't update it. I think to get a flawless root permission it would take a while
SOLVED $mkdir working and than.... $ sudo mount -t ext4 -o loop /img-tools/sys.raw working/
so i did succeed to format the system.img to sys.raw but after trying to mount the sys.raw image i got the following response after the in the tortual suggested command
Am I right that you are already working in the directory "/img-tools" and want to mount the sys.raw file in it ? So then, if you determine to mount "/img-tools/sys.raw" that this could be interpreted as mount "/img-tools/img-tools/sys.raw", a directory that doesn't exist ?
Or am I seeing something wrong ?
i have compiled the system.img file to sys.raw and i want the sys.raw folder so that you can swich framework, apps and other folders with roms to port
i want to have the outcom from the sys.raw ext4 file mounted in the /base home/working folder..
see .http://forum.xda-developers.com/chef-central/android/guide-how-to-port-lollipop-marshmallow-t3283452
mounting system.img should do the job ,so you do not have to format it to sys.raw.
i made a map working in the img-tools map,but with the command below i got ...mount point working/ does not exist
base home/img-tools$ sudo mount -t ext4 -o loop system.img working/
mount: mount point working/ does not exist

I'm more familiar with DOS. But the principle should be the same.
i will try to understand the link you posted...will keep you informed
EDIT: if i'm right, then you are inside the "img-tools" folder and trying with this command to mount system.img to a folder named "working" in it.
e.g.: /base home/img-tools/working
but you want to mount it to the folder /base home/working, right ?
so you have to type it in another way. try: sudo mount -t ext4 -o loop system.img /base home/working/
I'm not sure what Linux expect. maybe the slash before "base home" in my example is not needed.
fixt it http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8663891/how-to-mount-the-android-img-file-under-linux
/Downloads/doogee x3 porting/base/base home/img-tools$ mkdir sys
[email protected]:~/Downloads/doogee x3 porting/base/base home/img-tools$ sudo mount -t ext4 -o loop sys.raw sys/
[email protected]:~/Downloads/doogee x3 porting/base/base home/img-tools$
i had to use my sys.raw file and make a sys map with ...mkdir sys ... command
How to convert .img to .raw... download img-tools extract it in a folder (http://forum.xda-developers.com/chef-central/android/guide-how-to-port-lollipop-marshmallow-t3283452) put the system.img from base rom with it and run the command... ./simg2img system.img sys.raw
I sat the whole night to find any supersu which roots flawless our doogee x3 on android 6.0. and i found it ! i flashed, installed, reflashed about hundred of times another supersu version by version downwards. it's the version 2.61 which works properly ! and yes, you can still use the playstore update of supersu + binary update inside the app without losing root or getting a boot stuck. see linked zip for working supersu you'll better save it safely

EDIT: I'm not sure it could be important, but I kept the system partition as read only as I installed SuperSU. Maybe you want to do it also.
i bought a doogee x5 so i am no longer active in this forum
