Major issue with OnePlus 2 Throttling - OnePlus 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Quick question if possible.
After about 5 minutes of play in all 3D games it looks like device starting to Throttle. All games loose FPS and become unplayable. I mean Order and Chaos 2 , after about 5 mins I am getting like 7 FPS. Unacceptable.
Now here is the question. IS there anyway to combat that I mean force CPU to be on specific clock or may be lover clock so it's not 100% but not 35% when CPU goes to safe mode.
Anyone ?

Also another thing. Help me understand something. All tests I do like 3DMark ot AnTuTu I am getting great results. Like in AnTuTu 5.7.1 I am getting 63059 and that an amazing result but once inside the game like I said before I clearly see game run just fine and then slowing down BIG time. Yet in let's say 3DMark I see temperature holing at steady 43C for all duration of the test.
May be I am expecting something that does not exist but I had OPO and I had better and smoother experience with games.
So with that I have a question. Is there a tool that will basically simulate 3D game play and will show on the screen in real time temperature, clock speed of CPU/GPU so I can see what is happening (beside 3D mark that showing nice graphs after) cause I feel I am going crazy. How tests showing me one thing yet in real life it's complete different experience. I need to know why games are slowing down.
Also as we know next Nexus 6P will have 810 v2.1 with diffirent clock speed just a bit. So clearly QualComm fixed overheating issue otherwise Google never would of put it in. So yeah, I am confused.

I guess people are also clueless.

Let's just wait and see. Hopefully if anything was optimized in 6P, it could be patched over by devs or OnePlus will path themselves in the near future

[Q] How is gaming performance and does it get hot?

I'm asking about how this phone scores with graphic intensive games and whether it gets hot(after a certain duration) while playing such games. Is thermal throttling really an issue or is it a faulty unit thing? Supposedly getting mine today, so I need to know.
I've been playing zombie gunship and dots all day...both absolutely destroy my battery life but it dies not get that warm, at least no throttling. Maybe more demanding games will hurt....really missing my n4 and Franco kernels per app CPU speed
Got it
I've just bought it and used it for a little while downloading stuff and it got a little warm.. hmm

The first day and a half after getting this device out of the box it got kinda warm in the back, not on the screen though. After that period of time though i havent had a problem with heat so maybe it has something to do with being a new device out of the box? Now it stays cool and just gets a little warm here and there, not much though, but it seems normal.
Please, someone, point out a device that is quad core even running max speeds of just 1.5ghz and does not get hot after 20+min of graphics intense gaming with no breaks. Anyone? That's what i thought, people should try to understand this before complaining. This device is i believe 2.4ghz in speed with quad core snap dragon 800. My HTC One X+ with Tegra 3 chip "made for gaming" only allows me to play a graphics intense game like dead trigger for 20min then the device shuts down! Yes it shuts down because the device gets too hot for itself, blinks red notification light, then a minute or so later shuts itself off so it doesn't blow up.
Mobile gaming has come a long way for sure. Mobile gaming hardware wise has not, obviously! Sure this device could probably play Diablo 3 with 50 FPS but for maybe only 20min before it gets red hot! I think cellphone compaines should address this and make the devices available to "breath" just like a PC machine would. Sure we can't have a "fan" in these devices to cool them off but when you're running a quad core device on 2.4ghz of speed that's practically a damn laptop! Now imagine that laptop running full bore with zero fan to cool it down and zero ventilation. How long could u run that laptop under those conditions before it gets way too hot???
Gaming is AMAZING on this screen is good , the gpu has power to drive whatever.
MC4 actually runs buttery smooth , something my s3 couldnt do.
Riptide GP2 plays beautifully with the graphics all set to high. The water effects look sick

THER!AL THROTTLING Issue

Shield tablet is pretty good after i flashed roms
HOWEVER
Thermal throttling is still an issue for tegra
while playing real racing 3, it keeps lowering the cpu frequency and make the game so laggy
Which seriously ruins user experience
thermal throttling starts at a frigging 50 degree celcius!!!!!!
Anyone has an idea to fix that?
I have been tried working on /d/tegra_throttle but it's not really working
Hope to be fixed through disabling it or raising up the threshold temperature (i.e. 80C)

I have an LTE shield and although I have two other phones that are unlocked and rooted, this time i decided that i would keep this device standard and i have to say, I do not, repeat,do not, have any lag or thermal throttling issues that you speak of?? not sure what changes you've made to yours but up to now I have had only a great experience with this tablet absolutely great, gaming has been brilliant.a great piece of kit,i was going to buy a nexus 9 but after reading all the negative reviews i'm glad I chose this instead and it turned into a right hassle trying to get the nexus, anyhow cancelled and very pleased I did now-faultless in my eyes.I run both real racing two and three and a few other high end games and have only praise for the experience, don't know why you are having the problems you write about.but just sharing my experience. cheers

Sorry but i'm yet to find a way to make my shield tablet throttling I can play GTA or doom3 settings maxed out with shield CPU set to max performance for two hours without making it throttle.
Something wrong with the OPs tablet. The Shield Tablet thermal behaviour is impeccable, see the Anandtech review. Like the other posters I get no throttling.

Which roms ?
Have the European Lte version running on complete stock Lollipop. This thing is awesome, no lags or freezes. All Games are running great and i didn't notice any throttle until now, btw. i played Half Life 2 for about 4 hours on max performance settings while charging!
I also do not get throttling. It has only heated up once on me after being in recovery for a while. Standard use the thing isn't even warm to the touch. Either something is keeping your cpu at max freq or your tab is indeed defective.

This is a Shield tablet not a MiPad or a Nexus 9,
on my side i never noticed throttling no matter what game i played (on or off AC power ) but i am on a pure stock 5.0 (why change the perfection when everythings works fine?)
Real Racing3 temps 62-66°c average no throttle,
4hrs of Kritika 68° at max,
rendering a 5 minutes scene in loop for 2hrs with Music Girl (variable physics, accuracy set on 1/180, textures max) 75°
(never got past 75° even in Antutu 3DMark or any benchmark)
OP seems to be a troll, he posted the same at the z3c forums
No throttling here either, I use system monitor to verify that easy enough.
I've twenty odd games installed, HL,HLP1,Portal, RR3, MC4, MC5, damn maybe too many lol.
No throttling, considering that the metal frame is a kind of heat sink the way the tablet is built is no surprise, what is though is someone blaming throttling for stutter especially on RR3, its a mild game, perhaps their tablet is not so well set up, poor memory card, Facebook who knows.
Could be as suggested someone trolling.

Laughed way too hard at this, although sadly you're right.
That thermal throttling is definitely a problem with your device OP. Talk to NVIDIA about it, see if they'll do an RMA.
After reading he is having other issues like laggy rotation and stuff, I believe him.
Though, like above, it's not normal per this tablet and I bet it's something gone bad on install or no hard reset after upgrade.
It's worth investigating for sure.
My money is always on Facebook though, dirty dirty app.

Overkill Resolution for high gfx gaming? Samsung got you covered!

Hello all, one of the main reasons why i chose the xperia z1 compact over a galaxy s5 by then was that i knew that z1 compact had much more power to spare for future gaming thanks to the low screen resolution, It was very hard for me to choose this time galaxy s6 over z5 compact for the same reason, but i succumbed to the bigger better oled screen this time around even though i was upset at the senseless screen resolution of 1440 x 2560 which made it clear that the phone would struggle with current high end games to keep 60fps let alone future games...
Well after playing Dead Trigger 2 with all gfx on max surprise surprise, the phone could not keep up with its absurd screen resolution a steady 60fps so i started thinking if there was a proper screen res changer tool this time around as i was a bit familiar with some of them in the past which done a poor job and many times left the phone unusuable thx to the resolution affecting the OS itself aswell.
Well guess what, Samsung woke up and presented galaxy s6 owners (and some other high end galaxy models) with a very nice solution.
Its called Game Tuner, officially made by Samsung and you can find it here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsung.android.gametuner.thin&hl=pt_PT
What it does is exactly what all the games should have in the first place, options to choose resolution for your game without changing the resolution for your OS GUI, on top of that, you have a nice control panel profile system which allows you to setup different settings for different games installed in your phone, this apps benefits you with the following:
1)Lower graphics resolution for any games of your choosing,
2) It allows you to even force 3D games which are running at a lower resolution than your screen to actually run at highest resolution supported by your screen,
3)It also allows you to lock FPS to 30 instead of 60 if you would like to preserve some battery life.
4)Allows you some brightness control per game.
Here are the more confusing settings explained:
High (turns all games to the highest resolution of the phone screen) almost impossible to observe pixelization
Medium (turns all games to a tad lower res (i believe 1920*1080) difficult to observe pixelization
Low (turns all games to an even lower res( i believe 1270*720) pixelization visible but not too ugly
Extreme Low (turns all games to the lowest resolution possible (i believe 840*472) as i see alot of pixelization
Custom (Allows you to select each game with a specific profile (high, medium, low, extreme low).
Now you can fully enjoy that 2k screen without reprecussions!
Give it a try and have fun!
EDIT: If any questions feel free to ask and ill try to help as i can.
Wow, thanks for sharing. Works great. You can even specify the resolution, fps and brightness per game.

NP, glad you like it, updated thread with more information and corrected some grammar issues.
You can already find this in the S6 themes and apps section. No need to post this here
Thanks, this is really cool. I wouldn't have seen it if you hadn't posted it here! I wish it would actually tell you what resolution each of the settings are. I tried taking a screenshot in game after I enabled it and then checking the "details" in gallery but it still said 2560*1440.
Now I'd like to know how I can completely disable it? It seems even after uninstall the settings remain. I'd like to now bypass the 60FPS limit.

The settings wont remain after uninstalling, i say this because i tried it myself by setting a game to lowest resolution possible and after uninstalling it rolled back to normal, many people believe that, without modding, all games will run by default on the highest resolution supported by your screen, this is a false assumption, and you can easelly notice that with games such as Asphalt 8 and Real Racing 3.
Indeed it should specify resolution instead of "very low, low, med, high," thats why the thread settings are nothing more but assumptions.
Also setting it to MED is considered the default setting for said game in this app so maybe med is actually the default app resolution.

Well, i think it doesn't stress anybody, but the opposite: more users will know about it. It seems this app is not that popular, many users have no idea about it (i found it a couple of weeks ago by mistake in playstore).
The app should receive more coverage in media too. This will be a win-win situation for all, and maybe samsung will add a system-wide option for resolution change (yeah, keep dreaming)
I believe beying able to choose fullscreen resolution of your phone shouldve been a thing implemented by default, im Really happy that samsung thinked of this for my S6 as i can play games like dead effect 2 with extreme graphics but reduced resolution (almost imperceptible pixelization) and get a rock steady 60fps, the only strange thing it semms that it is happening is that after a level or two the game starts to loose performance, other users also reported this issue, samsung will hopefully fix it in the next app update.

Yes that would increase performance but its a heavy risk considering you might burn up ur cpu or gpu and void the warranty

I may be wrong but I assume unless you game all day long it shouldn't make too much of a difference in terms of lifespan (assuming one swaps phone every 2 years or so), pretty much like OC/OV.

Indeed OC reduces lifespan of said component but the problem is more serious than that, if you disable the throttle the GPU or CPU might overheat, it depends on the phone and the chips inside and also the heat dissipation quality which can range from different thermal pastes to different heatsinks and to where is that heat transfered after that, its a risk of hardware damage without knowing its internal chips temps.
But thats just me who knows maybe im wrong.

Well that would totally make sense, but at least as to OC+slight OV it has been tested that the possibility of making some actual damage will most likely be very slim untill around the 5 year mark or so of usage. As to DVFS, by disabling that you don't actually disable throttling completely, which is still managed by the kernel (as it should), but only Samsung's more aggressive throttling which is completely unnecessary because it's always trying to keep the phone "super cool" at the expense of performance, while some people who are into heavy games would use a device hot to the point that it causes mild discomfort (but still safe for the components), rather than a device that is slightly cooler but gets laggy after 2 minutes of actual gameplay.
I guess it's up to the user to decide whether to mess with this or not, maybe for most people it won't be worth even the slight risks but for people like me who happen to enjoy heavy games and swap phones every year and a half or so it's good to have the option.

Bad gaming performance compared to N5

Hey just wanted to know if anyone was experiencing lag in games. I turned off all game options in package disabler pro and it fixed the brightness issue but still having FPS issues. I play Order and Chaos 2 and on my Note 5 it performs beautiful, on this phone it's laggy and choppy. I can't figure out if it's a graphic issue, optimization issue, or a network issue with this phone. Please any input is greately appreciated!
Probably a Gameloft issue. I always loved Order and Chaos but their device support is crazy. The SD 820 should be a best. But even on the LG G4 with the 808 last gen, tons of games had issues playing. I know Mortal Kombat was one that was so unplayable until several updates later. On the G4 there was a Game Optimizer or something in battery settings if I remember.
Also check Samsungs new Gameplay mode or whatever it's called. It's an overlay that could be causing slowdowns.
I'm totally getting the same vibe from the gaming performance of this phone. A good example is the recently released Miitomo game. On my Nexus 6P and my boyfriends Droid Turbo, the game runs smoothly. However, on my S7 Edge it stutters and lags in a way that resembles missing animations or frames. It's pretty noticeable and it does not go away no matter what I do. I uploaded a video of this on YouTube and plan on showing a couple more games and apps that similar performance dips when it comes to graphics...
Smacky cars is the same way.
TBH it looks like a frame rate limiter.
It appears to be pumping like a PC game with a 60Hz refresh display and a GPU that can render 300+ FPS and is locked at 60Hz. It will jump like that. The hardware is probably too fast in all actuality. If it could be run without such a limit it would probably scream like a girl running from a gorilla.

[root & non-root fix] buttery smooth gaming & no fps drop [100% working]

Anyone else notice the lag when playing games?
Especially Blazblue, Bleach Brave Souls, 3D games, etc?
WELL youve found the right place here!
ROOT SOLUTION (100% LAG FREE)
Buttery JUST like an iphone 7! 100% LAG FREE
1)Install BatMan Rom in the Samsung S8 Rom development (Credits for making the rom!)
2)Install PekakaKernel
3) Root as Usual with magisk
4) After phone has been setup, download Kernel audiutor app
5) Before you play your game, set Minimum and Maximum both to 2314mhz for the BIG cpu & LITTLE cpu & GPU to min & max 572mhz
6) Click on governor and change to "Performance"
7) At the top of the settings page, click Apply on Boot
8)DONE! Enjoy your iphone buttery Gaming experience!
My lag in Bleach Brave souls and every other game has gone. So happy I made the decision to go custom rom & kernel!
NON-ROOT SOLUTION:
(decreases lag by ~40%!)
1)Install new launcher (nova) or anything light weight. Do not use Samsung's stock launcher.
2) Install Samsung's Game Tuner App & set your game settings to HW +5, and your resolution to however you like. I have mine on 100% as it feels snappier.
3) DONE!
you should notice 30-50% less lag and games will be actually be "playable" (remember to always play with game tuner app, with HW+5 setting) but you will still feel the lag here and there and in certain graphic intensive situations, it will still drop frame but its your best non-root solution!
if this worked for you, please donate me a beer or 2 thru my paypal at [email protected] cheers!
Same here man. Even a game as simple as the Tsum tsum game lags. My wife ain't happy about that as her iphone had no issues with games.

I would say when it comes to apps specially gaming give at least a month before updates for them start rolling out. Most of them aren't optimised for the Galaxy S8. Once updates start rolling out i believe the experience will get a whole lot smoother.
anybody plays Mobile Legends?
my problem is the game isn't smooth.
there's constantly lag/delay.
I've tried downloading Package Disabler Pro, and disabled GamePad & Game Services.
it did make my game smoother, but the lag/delay still can be felt.
You can really notice the difference when you play something on iOS then play on this phone. Marvel Contest of champions is my go to game. Open that game on this phone and on an iPhone, not onlky does the iphone open is much faster, going through the menus is a breeze.
Tsum Tsum lags on this phone as well compared to the iphone and so does subway surfers. This is pretty pathetic with suppose top of the line specs.
Same here. Playing Fifa Mobile and it lags. This is really frustrating. Such a device and than this. Even on my old huawei p9 no lags. Anybody found a solution?

No, Mali g71 is already supported on Mate9/P10, while Adreno 540 on non Samsung device already runs Riptide Renegade at 2k ultra settings and 60fps for an hour!
The SoC is clearly crippled on the s8 for battery score, high performance mode is BS, you really can do nothing before root to fix it, believe me I have been trying on my friends s8
I haven't had any such problems and I play marvel contest of champions and star wars force arena.
Not a hint lag or slowdown hardwear wise.

No lag on mine either. Whether gaming or during anything. Phone is extremely fast.
Another thing, Just play
Skyforce reloaded on an exynos S8 vs s821 device to see the much inferior graphics, Mali's support is not great
I have severe problems playing Hearthstone. It sometimes doesn't register clicks and freezes for a couple of seconds.
I have no problems with lag, but I do with crashing. Bleach Brave Souls is constantly crashing. Froze game launcher, no launcher.

High performance mode doesn't make any changes to the cpu or gpu, sadly - only display resolution, brightness, etc. g71 is on mate9/p10, but with less cores = less heat. Also only Samsung goes extreme to gain a little more battery life. Sad as in reality you pay so much for super high end phone and the games play worse vs 3 years old phones. This is unacceptable, but Samsung gets away with it every years and keep doing it.
I think anyone posting here should make the distinction of they have exynos or s835 s8, the exynos version is just pathetic in running any game and if it runs good initially just play 5 minutes before it goes to hell, a phone with such hype and raving reviews should not be given a blind eye about this, it's inexcusable including the UI which lags in every corner
I just hope the s835 version runs things better (I know the UK doesnt)
