Hi,
My girlfriend has recently bought a Galaxy S. It has not been rooted or flashed. She's having a problem where the display is using 70% of the battery, even with the brightless set low, as shown under Settings -> About Phone -> Battery
Unplugged for 7h 15m 28s
Display - 70%
Cell standby - 10%
Phone idle - 5%
Android System - 5%
Android Core Apps - 3%
Android OS - 3%
Internet - 2%
Has anyone heard of this before?
What can we do to fix it?
Thanks
Scott

Likewise, the display is draining the most battery comparatively to other things. (I'm using the lowest settings)
Im not speaking from research (how other superphones behave), but wild guess - it is normal for all touch screens, especially bigger ones.
Touch or not - it doesn't matter.
Screen technology and size matters.
See 4" has around 4 times the area of 2" display.
How long was the display active for ? This is normal if you have it turned on a lot at high brightness settings.
i'm not surprised even if the 70% is true, because my HTC Athena is a power hog when i keep the screen on for a long time, the juice que sucked up in a couple of hours of use.
the SGS i9000 is having a better run for the power.
at least i can play 3D games (ASPHAL5) in it without worrying about running out of battery like with my old HTC Athena

See, you are kind of reading this information wrong, IMO. Yes, the display usese 60+% of power, regardless of brightness settings, if you have the display on. Here's the simple math:
Standby time (no sync, no 3G, basically, literally just standing by, screen off doing nothing: 24-25 days
screen on time: 4-7 hours.
You can see that the screen sucks SOOOO much more power than just about everything else your gf had going on in her usage, there wasn't a high usage scenario other than the screen. However, if you use something like GPS the stats will "look better" but you'll have less battery because it'll go from screen to 40% and GPS to 30% but your battery would be nearly dead.
Also, if she just went to sleep then Cell standby and Cell idle jump by 1-5% each and then you have "better looking" statistics.
This essentially means, if you use the phone with the display a large percentage of the time that the phone is unplugged, expect these percentages. I unplug my phone at night, when I wake up my display percentage is 0% (not necessarily better than 70%, because it's usage dependent), then I go to work, so I might run unplugged for 20 hours, use 8% of my battery with my display reading at 20% of the power used. Then, I'll go home and play with it and it's upto 40%, the moral is that it's good to know how much your battery is used on various tasks, but anywhere from 20-70% is normal depending on how much you actually have the display on while it's unplugged.
70% sounded right. There was a youtube VDO that dissemble galaxy s awhile back that really give a good perspective.
The CPU, GPU, GPS, memories etc etc almost fit on your thumb. They are so miniturised and so small. The rest are chassis, batteries and screens taking up almost all the space.
So it is no surprise that the screen should be what guzzling down all the batteries.
didnt know it uses that much...

The easiest way to fix this is by installing & running multiple applications that consume a lot of battery power. This should lower the percentage of battery power that the display consumes significantly.
(Only posting this because you already got more helpful answers in this thread)

Thanks, but that's the thing, I have a Desire and if used similarly (with brightness set highest) mine shows:
Android System 31%
Cell standby 21%
Wi-Fi 21%
Phone idle 16%
Display 11%
I thought the Galaxy S's screen is supposed to be more power efficient than the Desires so that's why it doesn't make sense to me. Again today her battery use shows:
Display 61%
Cell standby 17%
Phone idle 10%
Android OS 6%
Android System 3%
Internet 2%
So I think either my phone (Desire) is reporting the battery use wrong, her phone (Galaxy S) is reporting it wrong or the display is using more than it should? Now I had a similar battery % when I flashed a few 2.2 roms onto my phone, but people were saying that was because the drivers weren't correct. (I haven't flashed 2.2 recently)
Cheers

Hello,
Same happened to me, but I used live wallpaper. When I turned to the simple wallpaper the usage from 75% dropped to 50% -keeping all my other activities constant.
Chryssa
I don't think that the info displayed by android is very accurate.
I get about 55% too though.

Just press on the display-bit, and you can see how many hours/minutes it's been on.
19 hours since unplugged:
Android OS: 36%
Cell Standby: 25%
Phone Idle: 18%
Display: 14%
Wi-fi: 3%
Android System: 2%
Those 14% is 31minutes continious use...
31 minutes of Display time is nothing over 19 hours, hence the low percentage. Mine shows approx. 50% usage when it's been used say almost 2 hours and phone awake time 14 hours.
For the OP, if you don't tell us how long the display has been switched on ... all the answer will be just guessing
As everybody says, the display is always the bigger battery consumer unless you use your phone as a mp3 player or just a phone to receive call.
If you go on the web, play games, read mails, use maps ... the display will always be the biggest ( maybe the gps can go higher ... )
On my side I have 65% of battery left after 7h unplugged
50% of display for 1h4mn
21% of android OS
13% of cell standby
8% of phone idle
It's all down to the comparatively slow advancement of battery technology.
Screens are getting bigger, higher resolution and more power-hungry. Just the same as processors and GPUs need more juice, new wireless standards are introduced and multi-tasking becomes popular.
We've come from dumbphones (eg: the old Nokias) used almost solely used for calling and sms to phones that handle half the stuff in our lives, yet they're still using almost exactly the same battery technology to power it.
Simply put, the smarter the phone, the more power hungry it will usually be. And the Galaxy S is currently the smartest phone of the market.
Samsung compensated by fitting a larger battery, but they can't perform miracles with the aging battery tech.
Take a look at the x-ray scans and teardowns of the iPad; 80% of its internal volume is battery space to allow it to last for 10 hours! Sadly phones don't have the same space luxury without the rear getting chunky.
I'm hoping increased capacity batteries are released like the Hero had, as the Galaxy S is large but thin enough that some extra volume on the back wouldn't be much of a problem.

That is just fine! It's just the percentage guys.
Think about it this way.
Compared to the energy consumption of the display other things uses much less energy.
However on my Galaxy S, I played 6 hours (almost 3, 720p Movies) continuously. Isn't it just awesome on a device having 800x480 Crisp Display that only weighs 118 grams?

With brightness set to auto-brightness or max or min?
@OP - this is very normal. I always get the same type of readings.
Except when I talk(voice call) for a very long time.
Mine also same display always use up more then 70% and the battery can't even stand for 8 hrs, with very minimum usage 1hrs wifi, 20 min call, 1/2 hrs 3g, 1 hrs navigation(with charging). Have got battery replacement from samsung but still the same I read a post some where for UK set, the guy get 1 to 1 replacement, battery can last for 2 days for it new set, just wonder is it the flaw set we having that cause our battery drain? My friends told me that for his set from morning till after work (9 to 8 pm almost 11 hrs) battery only drop 10%. I really hope someone can help us to prove is samsung selling flaw set so we can claim 1 to 1 exchanges.
The way that I understand power saving mode is that it saves juice by changing backlight based on what is on the screen. However in order to do this it.means cpu would be constantly used. So does power saving mode really save juice? Is the amount of battery saved by changing backlight more than the battery used by constant cpu usage?
That's a good question but I highly doubt that they would add the feature if they didn't test that it actually saved power. But, stranger things have happened.

I assume you aren't basing that statement on recent events of failed quality control on high-end phones
No, it does not.

And this is based on???
From what I have read, having power saving mode on is another process the cpu has to worry about therefore possibly causing more battery drain. Personally I have disabled power saving mode and auto brightness and have experienced a slight improvement in battery life. I use the slide on taskbar feature to adjust brightness manually.
I have both Power Saving Mode and Automatic Brightness on, 3G off, and I get over 40 hours in normal use! I hope that tells you these settings don't drain the battery and you shouldn't worry about having them turned on.
It is NOT putting an undue burden on the cpu, and small amounts of CPU usage have MUCH less effect than powering the screen.

I have to ask what is normal use for you? Cant imagine getting 40 hrs on any device besides a BBerry.

I find that the 'auto settings' takes away from a session - screen dimming and back again. Swipe to adjust brightness seems to work fine. As far as I'm concerned, the Vibrant is running normal when usage puts Screen at 83% or so.. After all, we bought it for the display to begin with

They released the phone without doing adaquate testing on the GPS.
HTC released the G2 without turning it upside down & seeing the hinge go a flyin.
Just because they threw a feature in doesn't mean that it's been tested.
We're the testers

He keeps is 3G off, thats what's saving the battery. That and he probably was sleeping for 16+ of those 40 hours.
Just an FYI, I have been running my phone on automatic brightness + power saving mode for the past few days as opposed to my usual lowest brightness + no power saving mode; and usually I would get inbetween 3.5-4 hours of screen time (depending on what I did) but now I am getting 4-4.5 hours (same usage). Obviously the automatic brightness does not improve battery life over lowest brightness all the time, so power saving mode must be doing something right -- something aside from just lowering screen brightness as needed.
That is a feature of 2.1 that is intended to help people with LED backlit screens by turning off LEDs in areas that are black. We have SAMOLEDS, which are lit by pixel, and we get battery battery life by using black themes. That is why Fusion 1.1 is nearly all black, and gets insane battery life.

Actually, that doesn't tell us anything. What is your battery life like with Power Saving and Auto Brightness off?
Hey guys,
I am currently on Roto JMI v2 flashed using Odin from Stock Asian ROM. I am facing a peculiar battery issue, was hoping you could help me out here
So i charge the Tab at around 2-3 % by switching it off and plugging it in for a good 4 hours or so. Once the battery meter (in off mode) shows 100% I disconnect the charger and switch on the Tab only to find that the battery shows 99% !!!
I also tried charging it again while switched on from 99% to 100% and as soon as it is done and I remove the charger, it again drops to 99% IMMEDIATELY!
What am i missing here?
Cheers & Thanks in advance!
This is a common thing. I have it. And I read other people do, so you're not alone.
The 100% will not hold. Perhaps the moment one unplugs the tab from power, it immediately takes 1% of power for the tab to reconcile and keep everything running.
Same issue here, was about to start a thread about it but you beat me to it.

I don't think that it actually consumes 1% of the power - it's just that the calibration of the battery meter is such that if you are at less than 100%, which you will be the second you switch the Tab on, it shows 99% because you've consumed some power.
Regards,
Dave
I faced the same issue, but from what I observed, seems the root cause is the Power Management.
I have Battery Indicator Apk installed on both Tab and I9000, I9000 battery voltage can hit 42xxMV while shows 100%. But on Tab, the voltage was never above 4200, the highest I recorded was 4198mv. I strong believe it's one kind of "protection" to avoid the battery to be over charged to pro-long the battery life for Tab since the battery is not changeable.
Thanks for clearing that one up for me guys Glad to know it's not an isolated instance
My tab takes around a good 4 hours to charge to 100% but i notice that the drop from 99% to lets say 85% HAPPENS VERY QUICKLY. In like 20-25 minutes of use, I am down to the 80's. Its not like i switch on all the features on my Tab which cause the drain but just watching a video or surfing on the wifi leads to this. And i get really paranoid having a battery widget on screen because I can see the drop by 1% as I am on the Tab.
Any ideas? Best way to prolong the battery life? Currently I have 20% brightness, Power saving mode on, Wifi / APN switched off, on GSM mode only, background process for market disabled, no sync, clear my caches regularly, no significant widgets on homescreen. (Though using smart shortcuts).
Cheers & Thanks to all of you!

Hi all,
Since a few days I have a huge battery drain om my Fossil gen5. It never was the best battery, but it lasted from 6am till 9-10pm before it went in battery saving mode (without sport exercise)
Now it's already in batt saving mode after 10 hours .
Everything is "on" except WiFi, nfc and OK google detection. The same settings and apps as a month ago.
Are there any tricks/mods/custom roms to extend battery life without compromises in functionality?
I already did a reinstall, but unfortunately it didn't affect the battery life.
Hope someone can help me

Other than turning off things like Location (as you already have Wifi and NFC off), not too much else than uninstalling apps you don't need, and turning off Notifications on most of your apps except the main essentials you want.
Turn off Always On displays, or the Tilt/Tap to Wake (they do consume more battery and it's just as easy to hit the main crown).
Only turn on Location/etc when you need them rather than on all the time.
Also the little battery inside, if you've been using it from 0% charged to 100% the whole time, instead of keeping in in 20% ~ 80% (ie: not charging more than 80% or so), the battery itself will deteriorate after a while. Keeping it between 20% and 80% typically keeps most Li-Ion/Po batteries healthy longer. (kind of why wireless ear buds can't hold a charge anymore after 2 or 3 years).
