A trick to improve performance when completely stock? - X 2014 General

TL; DR
Disable Android System WebView
Reboot
Profit - let me know it's a placebo otherwise, it worked for me and xperia dudes.

-full rambling
Hi everyone, hope I'm posting in the right section.
Some months ago my nexus 4 broke to a pricey degree and so I upgraded to this beautiful piece of moto.
I had done my fair share of modding on the n4, trying to really squeeze the best out of it, so it was refreshing to move to a device that didn't scream for the development scene it never got, because all would work well.
And it did, except for the fact that almost every time I used the device I couldn't help thinking that this wasn't that much of a performance upgrade from my previous droid. Navigating the interface would always feel a bit stuttery, janky, at times even laggy.
Didn't really feel like rolling back to KitKat as I dig 5.1 so I flew across xda for some research on no-root exploits.
And then, eureka! Some wonderful guys over at the xperia z1 forum found that disabling Android System WebView would help with smoothness.
It did. Reboot and see for yourself! I really think it brought my X to its full potential as no feature is broken. Browsers work like a charm, in fact I just typed all of this from the phone.

Disabling Android System WebView helps with overall android performance too?

It seems so. I was sceptical at first but now I'm sure that system-wide scrolling is perfectly smooth, from web pages to settings menus to my vertical app drawer.
Overall smoothness also seems better (transitions finally work as Material Design was intended to be, with no annoying micro-lags), as it should be with a friggin sd 801!
The no-root performance tweaks I usually set up (GPU options in dev settings, SD maid scans) have never had this much of an impact on how Android feels.

Honestly, I never had any smoothness issues with this device. Tried this tip, seen no differences at all.

What does Android Webview does ?

The Android Webview works in the apps, like the internal browser of some apps, like Facebook that has an internal browser to open links.

Also some apps only work if you have webview. I have made 2 apps that use webview and if it is removed those apps do not work.

Moto X is already in it's best period from the performance point of view. Mine running on 5.1 stock firmware is already running super smooth and I don't feel any scope for improvement right now, except the dialer which opens with a mild lag when opened after picking up the phone from standby.

Tips to remove lag

Hello, I have LG G3 for two months, it was an upgrade from my LG NEXUS 5. I really like the Design, camera and battery on my G3, but the performance was always poor. I did upgrade it over OTA, did a factory reset a few times, rooted to remove MacAfee. Now I even reinstalled software form a file (tutorial on forums). It is still choppy when I scroll web pages, play store is really bad. The launcher was also not smooth at all compared to my Nexus, now I am running Nova launcher it does help a little. Only essentials apps are now installed and I checked running services and remove the apps that have service, but I don't really use. Still feels like cheap dual core phone, far from Nexus 5.
tl;dr
Why does G3 lag so bad when you scroll and how can I fix that?
You can reduce lag on home screen by disabling wallpaper scrolling.
There are threads on this already where you will find what you need. You can make this thing fly very easily.

Proving you wrong is even easier than getting rid of most lag. Disable all animations, set transition scaling in dev options to zero, turn on hardware acceleration, do NOT reduce dpi as some here have advocated. No more complicated than checking a few boxes.
Unfortunately, running the stock rom, you'll never be able to compare it to the nexus 5. Once Cm11 is ready for prime time, it will be a comparable experience

Huge lag reduction and scrolling improvement

If you have lag, try this http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/34khjk/protip_if_your_still_getting_memory_leak_problems/
This turned my phone from a choppy mess to a much smoother experience. It is like night and day right after killing the process. Even chrome scrolling improved 100 percent.
Like in the thread I set up tasker to kill systemui every hour. No ill effects so far except my wallpaper turned back to default.

I'm glad I don't have any issues like this.
I don't really have this issue, but I've tried it with ROM toolbox pro/lite - Tools - Rebooter - and Restarted System UI.. Yeah, I've noticed that's it's a lot smoother and snappier. Dang! Lollipop is a kindof a mess.
I have this problem on twitter, play newstand, any forum site browsed with Google Chrome and even the new adblock plus browser.
Does doing this reset your battery timers?

not sure how to do that exactly, i just made a new time based profile repeating every hour. then made a task under app, kill app, and selected systemui.
pretty simple just click around in tasker for a minute and you will find a way to do it.
I've set up tasker to kill system Ui but haven't noticed much difference, I still have scrolling lag with various browsers and some apps such as Google play, the latest update for play newsstand and Tapatalk. The latest update to twitter works fine now though.

The worst problem with scrolling is XDA. The junk ads here are abysmal.
Can also be done from Settings→Applications→Application Manager→All→System UI→FORCE STOP.
Does killing System UI (I added all 3 of them) via Tasker actually work if you aren't rooted?
Scrolling in Chrome for me is abysmal and everything is so laggy in general. Not to mention the 10 hour battery life.

You want less ads? Try the XDA Classic theme on this site. Theme selection is at the bottom on the left side.
I prefer the classic theme. It's the same since 2006 when I joined after buying an i-mate JAMin (HTC Prophet).
What a great phone.

Is your OPT feeling pretty slow?

Hey all,
I bought a One Plus 2 yesterday (coming from the Galaxy S6) and immediately noticed how unbearably laggy the Oxygen OS was - am I the only one experiencing this? I get a few moments of fluid animations but then things just get choppy, especially compared to the Galaxy S6. I've since put the Chinese Hydrogen version on and it seems a lot more fluid but I just feel like it should be a lot faster? I've been considering just selling it on but this phone is perfect in nearly every other regard.
I was thinking that maybe this is just how things will be until some decent updates come along? Unless I'm the only person experiencing the choppiness.. Then I suppose I should be pretty worried indeed. As a point of reference, I've also used the Moto X 2014 and Z3 Compact which both seemed considerably smoother in operation. Some input from you guys would be great, along with any tips you might have to get the most out of this amazing phone.
Thanks.
Lol coming from an s6 you think its laggy? I switched from an s6 and compared to that this is the fastest phone I've ever had
Sent from my ONE A2001 using Tapatalk
Yes it is laggy as oxygen is still on beta, but you should wait and give time as it is a beast, give some time to one plus and they will fix the issues
You did update it right? The build it comes with is as dog**** as the home button is
Just update to 2.0.2 and u'll be fine.

Yup.. It usually lags when you switch to airplane mode.
Sent from my ONE A2003 using XDA Free mobile app
Phone is brand new. OxygenOS is in beta.. Let some development happen man, these specs dont lie
I updated and just got mine! Excited but it is slow. Some things up
Seems fast to me. I showed the OPT to my coworker who has an S6 Edge and he was impressed. He said it was faster than his S6. I didn't even ask him that.
Lol you obviously didn't use the fingerprint sensor to turn it on then or try to go to the home screen pressing the sensor home button. Jk
I've had several phones with fingerprint scanners and this one is by far the fastest so far and the phone is quick. Home button works great also. Maybe I just got lucky.
Yeah mine's pretty slow. I went into a phone store today and tried out the Huawei Mate 7, which on paper looks way behind the Oneplus 2, and it KILLED my OPT when opening apps.
I often get lag here and there, but this is less of a problem for me. My mane gripe is how long it takes to open an app. Like, I hit the Phone icon and it literally takes up to a second to launch. That Mate 7 was practically instant.
What gives, Oneplus?
A lot of the issues I initially had with oxygen were fixed after disabling hardware buttons, including excessive battery drain, heating up, and lag similar to what you're seeing. Maybe it has something to do with grounding? Or maybe I just got used to it :S
This phone is just not meant to be a daily driver with the frustration it brings. If you want to be less mad install cm 12.1. Makes things much better than oxygen
Try flashing OxygenOS 2.0.2 again and then factory reset. You may see a bump in speed. I personally have no quirks with the fluidity of the phone. While it does have some bugs all over the place, never once did the phone feel sluggish. But with that said, the OS does need a lot more polish to really make it feel truly complete. Right now despite all the OTAs OxygenOS still feels incomplete, or maybe its because I'm too used to the versatility of a CM based ROM.
It's slow for about a minute after boot but then things are really fast

Actually, the problem is because 2 google apps are using your CPU way too much. Disable the sheets and the slides apps in settings and you should be fine. CPU usage dropped by 40% in cpu-z after disabling these apps.
Update:- actually the CPU now has really less usage after disabling (5% after disabling.).

Im on OOS 2.1.2 rooted.. Having xposed and AK kernel.. No lags.. Super fluid..
For those complaining about the slow app launching, download a 3rd party launcher and you'll see instantly the difference in app launching. I prefer google now launcher to maintain that stock feel.

You see, I saw some lag and I went to developer options>show CPU usage and the most of the CPU usage came from the sheets and slides apps.

Is Chrome really laggy for you?

It's laggier than my Z3! I was NOT expecting this. Scrolling on certain sites is super choppy.
Guys, can you confirm?
UPDATE:
I have performed a factory reset and first impressions are that it is super smooth and silky now when scrolling again. I am yet to sign Chrome into my google account to sync a tonne of my bookmarks and see if this affects performance. Also, waiting on all my 237 apps to install in the background first before carrying out another test too. I will report back once I've done so.
UPDATE 2:
On my previous factory reset, somebody said I should remove last pass, which I did but it made no difference as I still had other accessibility services enabled. So the problem resurfaced.
Okay, so it is all down to accessibility services, IMHO. Once enabled, Chrome seems to suffer from this dreaded laggggg and slow touch response or sometimes freeze and crash on sites like daily mail, XDA and huffpost. I have performed a factory reset and not enabled any accessibility services yet and everything is hunky dory, even with full bookmark and account sync.
I will update when and if problem recurs. All seems well for last couple weeks, thank God.
I find the whole phone slower and more laggy than my S6 Edge. Very surprised by that.

I appreciate the tip and will actually do that.. Only thing is, I'm looking for a direct solution or fix for Chrome and whether the guys at Google are aware of this embarrassment.
I have bookmarks, PC sync, Pushbullet, ad block, Pocket and other extensions that work seamlessly on Chrome. Terrible shame that it is laggier than my Note OK and Z3 in scrolling and panning etc.

Sorry, I wouldn't know because I have had Samsung devices lately and I never used Chrome on them. I always preferred the Samsung browser since Chrome always seemed too bloated.
Now that I can't use the Samsung browser, I was curious what people are using instead of Chrome.

Are you using ad blocker or anything? Pure stock? Any apps consuming cpu in the background?

I'm pure stock, no root. Does Chrome have ad blocking on its mobile app? I don't have any installed from the Play Store neither.
I also noticed that unlike before, Chrome doesn't respond to touch as willingly as it does on my Z3 until the full page and ALL ads/banners are completely loaded and the blue bar is gone... It DOES scroll while loading, just after hesitating first and then being choppy when scrolling. I need to record this and upload someplace. Any ideas?
You should have a YouTube account, all Google's accounts can do this. Presumably you can with whatever account you're using on your nexus device.
Edit: not sure what is going to help though, I don't think just proving it's happening will help as that doesn't get to the root cause.
Get a cpu monitor and make sure no other apps are consuming cpu in the background. I'd the phone warm at all?

Good point. It's now showing itself on the Z3 as well. Simply because I'm now running Sony's concept marshmallow on there. I still have my old Note II and it is still coping better than my marshmallow toting devices.
It isn't warm neither. I think Chrome isn't optimised for Android 6.

Anyway to fix horrible multi window implementation on 7.x

Hope I'm not the only one with this thought but coming from 6.x to 7.x I find that the new mutiwindow support is horrible.
I have turned on the settings in the development options to all of all apps but still it's like night and day vs previous mutiwindow support.
Resizing is a pain as it needs to be super specific and also depending on the apps you use they don't actually run at the same time.
For example of playing a game and then trying to access the browser the game will stop unless it's the active window.
Same for Netflix. I can't browse and use Netflix at the same time without the video stopping.
Seems the new setup unless using Google Apps like YouTube allocates the active resources on the active window.
Previously I think it simply split processes and resources so both apps could work
I would have figured Samsung would have refined if at least not kept their version
Am I the only one hating this?
Is there any way around this for now?
Anyone?
I don't make much use of this, but I think the real issue is that in Marshmallow we had Samsung's implementation of multi-window. In Nougat, Google added multi-window to Android, so I think Samsung dropped their own in favor of what's built into Android. Which simply isn't as good as what the 3rd or 4th generation of Samsung's multi-window offered. I don't think there's anything we can do about it, unfortunately.
