What does Battery saving EXACTLY do ? - Galaxy S6 Edge+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there from France,
I have a quick question for you all S edge+ owners.
Very happy with it, but I'd like to tweak some battery saving features. In that respect, what does the regular (not "Ultra") Battery Saving mode exactly do once tunred on?
There is a brief description of course, but I was wondering if it does such stuff as "limit background data", or resorts to location pinging less often, other than the basic "reduce CPU".
Thanks in advance !

well
When i turn on the battery saver, my phone has some lag issues and the brightness turn into lowest, but it seems that the battery is not improve.

[Q] A few questions.

First of all, I'm doing this guide (wiki[dot]cyanogenmod[dot]com/wiki/Troubleshooting#Battery_recalibration) since I recently rooted and flashed CyanogenMod 7.0.3. One of my questions was this: What's the quickest way to drain my battery? Currently, I have airplane mode off, wifi on, sync on, GPS/Navigation on, and I'm watching a Netflix movie with the screen at the brightest setting. It's been like this for maybe ten minutes and it's still at 100%. Since I'm going to sleep soon, I was hoping it would be quicker to eat up the battery.
Secondly: 'Cell Standby' keeps eating up all my battery. Seeing as how I don't have a cell coverage plan and I always use my phone with airplane mode (with wifi on), why does 'Cell Standby' use so much power?
Anyways, does anyone have any more battery saving options? I wouldn't like to turn off wifi or sync.

Have you tried different radios? also you can overclock and undervolt, those all can make a huge difference in your battery life.
Set you brightness to a low level and turn off auto brightness.
Use a darker colored background, this will normally use less lcd power.
Also GPS can eat up alot of battery.
You may want to change your sync/ push options to update less often.
Not too familiar with the cell standby eating up battery life, normally with airplane mode this should stop the phone from searching for service. also try battery calibration after you install any rom. you can find this in the market.
Hope this was somewhat helpful.
good luck!

[Q] i9505 battery draining overnight

Hi
i don't particularly have problems with the battery life of my s4, but sometimes i get weird drains, like 25% overnight. The weird thing is i deactivate every toggle except for flight mode and battery saving mode. I thought it's rather peculiar that my battery drains in what in my opinion should be like the most battery friendly mode i could think of.. anyone any suggestions on how to solve this? On the first picture i dont really complain about the first 2 drops because that could be caused by gaming, but maybe it's in there too, the last one however is with all toggles off from a certain point (you can see my wifi and screen turn off), but there isn't really a change in steepness of dropping... the second picture is my toggle setup. Any help would be appreciated

I have exactly same problem! Any ideas?
well as always... first check your wakelocks with better battery stats (free on xda forums).
i had a drain over night too. even on my s2.
it was my routers fault... bought a new one and drain is fixed.
but maybe it's just an app for you which gets your phone out of stand by. so check out better battery stats
Same here. Already used better battery stats. Nothing suspicious which could've drained the battery that much
Send from my Galaxy S4 packed with awesomeness

[Guide] Optimizing Battery Life

Hey Guys, Kyuubi10 back again with a quick guide on improving the battery life of the HTC One M8.
Let's be honest, this phone is getting quite old now. You can already start to feel it lagging, and slowing down. And the battery doesn't last as much as it once used to.
But don't give up hope...your M8 isn't dead yet, and with some good management it can even rival 2016 flagships.
Let's begin with Marshmallow...
If you have not updated your M8 to Android 6.0 yet, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
Marshmallow is the best version of Android yet, the efficiency of Lollipop with the Stability of KitKat, and a very fresh take on Battery saving!
Reasons why you should update ASAP:
1 - Lollipop's memory leaks 99% fixed (Don't want to say 100% due to the possibility of some existing out of my limited knowledge, but for all intents and purposes there are no more memory leaks.) This is very important, because the memory leaks were both draining battery life, and slowing down the device...which in turn keeps the screen on longer and wastes even more battery.
2 - Doze!!! It's the latest battery saving feature to be added to Android, and it's basically a SUPER idle state, where the phone if left untouched with screen off for long periods of time will not waste any battery whatsoever! I tested this when going to sleep, phone was in airplane mode, battery saver turned on, screen brightness at minimum...I left it at 100% charge, I woke up it was still at 100%. With airplane mode off, and battery saver turned off the phone lost only 3% battery overnight.
This being said, true battery saving is measured while using the phone right?
It's not about how long it can last without being used, but how long it can last while being used.
But what if you already are on Marshmallow, and your battery life is still not cutting it?
The following solutions are organized from simpler to more complex.
1 - Follow this official HTC guide: Tips for extending battery life. It provides tips on reducing screen brightness, keeping connections off when you're not using them (Wi-Fi, Data, BT, GPS, NFC etc...), lowering volume and vibration strength and using power saver mode.
While their advice is quite obvious stuff, and most of you probably do it anyways, I would like to stress the use of power saver mode when you are out and about away from a convenient power source. Doesn't matter if your battery is at 90%, turn PS mode on, you will barely even feel a difference, but your battery will last you much more than before!
2 - Buy yourself a smartwatch. While it may seem counter-productive to keep Bluetooth on constantly to keep connected to the watch, it actually improves battery life by helping you avoid turning on your phone's screen. At the end of the day the battery saving that comes from it may be equivalent to the drain caused by bluetooth being on, or even greater than the drain. Thus effectively saving you battery life, and being convenient while doing it.
3 - Here comes the big one...ROOT your device and install a custom ROM and Kernel. Just by installing an optimized ROM and optimized Kernel you will get battery savings + better performance. Often you will also have settings you can tweak to optimize battery savings at the cost of performance or vice versa. And with a custom Kernel you can choose one with battery saving CPU governors.
4 - CPU Governors. CPUs, just after your screen, is the second most battery consuming hardware part in your device. Especially since it is on most of the time. Choosing a governor that can make it's job more efficient can save you bucket loads of battery.
The most common one for battery life is called "Conservative", and it will provide you with considerable battery life at the cost of performance. But if you want both good performance and good battery life then you are probably looking for a governor which employs the "Race to Idle" ideology. (If you don't know what it is, do a quick google, it's easy to understand.)
A good option I like to recommend is Wheatley, but if your kernel choice lacks it then interactive will be good enough...but you will have to tweak it's settings yourself to make it most efficient. Couple months ago I created this guide which you may find helpful when tweaking the interactive governor.
5 - Since we have spoken about Rooting then let's start adding some ROOT apps to the mix. Greenify would be my first recommendation.
For 2 main reasons... 1, It helps you stop annoying, battery draining apps which keep themselves running in the background. 2, It's latest versions have included a feature where you can set Doze to start sooner than default. Thus allowing you to reap Doze's benefits earlier and for longer.
Talking about the annoying apps, there's one in particular which comes to mind....Facebook.
Personally, while I don't like it's battery draining, I also don't want to uninstall it...since it's quite useful. Thus in Greenify I found my answer!
6 - Last but not least, if you are noticing unusual battery drainage, but you can't find which app is causing it (or may even be a system app), or if you notice that Doze is not having any effect... it might mean that a wakelock is not letting your device idle for long enough for Doze to start.
For this you will need an app called "Wakelock Detector". Charge your phone to around 80-100% and place it on a desk and let it idle for a couple hours (e.g. When you are asleep). When you are back check what WD found, and it might surprise you. (I found an app called HTC Mode which was keeping my device awake and preventing Doze from starting.)
Another advantage of this app is that once you find the wakelock it links you to Greenify through which you can put that specific app to sleep. Thus preventing it from setting the wakelock again.
If you follow all these steps, you should be able to feel the considerable difference in battery life. Reminding you why you fell in love with this device
I hope I have been of help, I noticed that there weren't any Battery Guides specifically made for the M8, so I thought I would leave one here in case anyone is looking for one!
If I have helped you make sure to hit that :good: button, I will greatly appreciate it, and you will be helping the community find this guide more easily.
Thanks for reading! Enjoy your longer lasting M8!
Thank you for the Info! Before marshmallow I used "app ops" but this doesn't work on Android M. Because of the app wakelock detector I removed the messenger app from facebook. It drained my battery. Thank you.

App ops is good for permissions, and stopping an app from connecting to the internet. Android M already has a permissions feature natively included.
What you want is to stop it from running in the background.
While you can uninstall it (and probably find another app which you can use facebook messenger in. e.g. Disa), I would personally recommend you simply use greenify to put it to sleep.
All official facebook apps are huge battery drainers, but greenify will keep them in check, so that you don't have to use another app with less functionality.
Obviously I am not forcing you lol, but it is my recommendation.

Auto power saving in Nougat?

I can't find an automatic power saving option on my S7 Edge on Nougat for when the battery drops below a certain persentage (eg. 15% or 5%).
All I can find is just a notification (for 30%, 40% and 50%) that prompts me to "tap there" to enable power saving which then opens another window with power saving options, I need to tap one, it takes a dozen seconds for it to change the power profile.. it's a drag.
So I'm wondering if there's anything automatic for power saving (like in all Android phones since lollipop) or maybe I somehow turned it off?
My phone was on 13% battery and still didn't switch to power saving (just the notification to tap there to turn it on).
Same here. I also can not find the automatic power save setting on Galaxy S7 / Nougat. How lame if Samsung took default Android feature out.
I see power saving mode on mine just fine.

Quite rude when people are trying to help.
So here's is a partial answer to my question: there is automatic power saving, it kicks in at 5% battery.
Anybody found an option to raise that 5% to 15% or 20%?
I checked everything battery and power saving related in settings and couldn't find it...
Device Maintenance> Battery.>App power monitor. There you can choose the apps you want to set power saving for and choose "Save Power".
It is not exactly the same as in vanilla Nougat, but if you want vanilla, Samsung is the wrong device.

No, that's not at all what I'm asking or looking for.
I know about this list, it is also present in vanila android, and it is completely useless...
I'm looking for an option to set the automatic power saving mode to kick in on higher battery percentage (20% or 25% or 30%), basically anything above 5% what the default is.

Right!? It's weird that auto-power saving only kicks in at 5% battery, but then again the battery is pretty impressive.
I'm getting used to manually turning on the power saving mode and tweaking the brightness if needed.
Yesterday I achieved 9 hours of screen on time, manually tweaking the phone as the battery drained.
Maybe they forgot the option with the 30/40/50% notification to also activate medium power saving.. a simple toggle is missing there :/
I hope they add it in a future update...

Yes the battery is pretty impressive and maybe they'll fix it like you say, hopefully!
I've not been one for power saving settings before but I like how this works, except for the one bug I've noticed is annoying me slightly.
When turning off the power saving and the resolution changes back from FHD to WQHD my keyboard (SwiftKey) size changes to really small so I have to adjust it each time; not sure if it's a bug or because the resolution is changing.
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
Yes, it looks like they have added a short way to reach the power saving setting screen, but avoid an automatic activation of the mode, rather then at 5%.
To activate it easily and using that fast activation, you have to wait until you get a notification for low battery, then click on the notification and select manually MID or MAX.
I just loved the old fashion automatic power saving....
I noticed the same right after updating. It is extremely annoying. It's frustrating when useful options which used to exist are removed. "Updating" is meant to make stuff better after all...
I liked the 2 power saving options before the update. One decreased performance a little & my screen didn't change. It was a little slower and not as bright. It was perfect and it's gone. The other was Ultra Power Saving. Apps were very limited. It was great when I was in a crunch & couldn't charge it right away. The new "improved" Power Saving is horrible & I hate it!
Updated my S7 to Nougat, couple days and regretting the decision more and more everyday. Yesterday I've noticed hey I'm at 10% and not in power saving mode like why? Oh we thought it be great idea to kick in power saving mode automatically only at 5%.....
There is suppose to be a Battery Saver option that lets you choose between 15% or 5% when to automatically kick in power saver mode. But apparently Samsung removed this option?
Yes, I also hate this change...
If anyone has a link to a petition or something please post it. I used to go powersaving at 50% and kept my phone topped off, I hate even seeing 2x%.
And I dont see an ultra saving mode, you basically flip the customization options each time? I understand the concept -- but we all like to have the phone at full-everything at least for the glorious first 10% after charge.
Then OK for the next 40%.
Then frugal mode kicks in. Being frugal all the time is just no fun.
S7 user here, the same thing happened with android 7.0 update. Really miss the auto power saving feature... I had set it to kick in at 20% and it was what I needed to have my battery last for a whole day. Now with Nugat update the battery doesn't hold for whole day anymore because of this, what a shame!
So there is no option to set it to say extreme power saving when battery drops below 10 % ?
Nope

LG G6 optimized for battery life

Hello, I am the new owner of the LG G6. I noticed a fairly large consumption of the battery in this phone, especially during idle
That is why I would like for myself and others to gather in this topic all the ways to improve the G6 performance in terms of battery life, which do not require rooting and are safe for the phone.
First, disable LDB (MLT in older versions) in hidden menu (LG 24/7 tracking of phone)
Search for "LDB function LG G6" in Google, there should be a theme on Reddit about MLT with exact instructions. Maybe someone below will drop the link, because I do not have such a possibility
What else can we do in the hidden LG menu to improve the battery life?
Second, turn off bloatwear
The easiest way is to go to settings > applications and disable (uninstall) applications that you do not use. However, this way you can not get rid of all the bloatware.
What are the other methods for improving the battery life of the LG G6?
Battery standby drain on my G6 (H870DS) is also poor. I lose between 1.5-2.5% an hour when the phone is just sat on the table. I have tried many things to reduce this without success. I have AOD off, battery saver on, gmail sync off, aeroplane mode on (no mobile/cell signal at home), Bluetooth off, WiFi off when screen off. I have removed/ hidden most of the bloatware using ADB commands and experimented with apps such as greenify and forcedoze but nothing seems to make any difference to the high battery consumption when the phone is idle. I have done 2-3 factory resets and nothing has improved. Gsam battery app tells me that a lot of battery usage is caused by android os, kernel and google play services. My conclusions are that android 7.0 Nougat has poor battery idle drain. LG will only update this to 8.0 Oreo eventually which might improve battery efficiency. Some people are reporting better standby performance with their G6’s so it might have something to do with which model/regions firmware you have. I also have the latest TWN firmware and this improved idle drain slightly. I shall wait for android 8.0 Oreo then factory reset and probably be disappointed. Great phone apart from poor battery standby and not having a notification led.
The most amusing thing I've noticed is that the Always-On Display has virtually no battery consumption. Whether it is running or not, I had the same high consumption on idle.
Tomorrow morning I will check whether turning off LDB (MLT) gives something.
I am afraid of updating to Android 8.0, because reviews of other phones after the update are extremely different, some say that the battery life has deteriorated, and others that have improved slightly
I too have my doubts that android 8.0 will be bring any improvement to battery standby drain so will be waiting to see other people’s experiences before I update.
This is also fun, because for the same type of device people report different effects of upgrades. So usually Android upgrade is a high risk game
It seems that turning off the LDB (MLT) feature has reduced the battery consumption in idle 2x, now the phone uses about 0.25% per hour.
Very interesting, that's the first time I've actually heard or read something about MLT/LDB. I wonder what both stands for and also what's its literal function. Polish forums are flooded with threads about "LG's spying app!".
I gave it a try and turned it off. Also I've turned off logging services too. After rebooting, I've removed two apps that are mentioned here and had to force-reboot again as "MLT has stopped" started popping up after a minute or two and it prevented me from doing anything on the phone
Hopefully it will improve battery life... even slightly, but improvement is improvement. For me, battery life is the weakest point of this phone (damned Android 7.0 and its idle battery drain bug)...
RAM is not so important for me, 4 gigs are enough and I've never experienced any slowdowns even with 30 tabs opened in Chrome
Someone on Reddit suggested disabling background running services for apps that use it for no real reason. This can be done by following:
Device settings > Smart doctor > Tap Memory > Tap overflow menu > Tap conserve memory
Selecting the apps that you want to not run in the background and setting the toggle to ON will help. Maybe. Ish.

Manually turning MLT off should be enough, I removed these apps just in case but I don't think it makes MLT "double off" as it's already killed in service menu.

I don't have my phone with me but as far as I remember the steps are almost exactly the same as for MLT/LDB disable.
Only you click the button about logging instead of MLT, one or two rows below. Then you have to tap "disable" button until every logging service below is set to "Disabled".

This option is called Log Services above the LDB function in the hidden menu. Unfortunately all these services I have already disabled :/
Another hint. Make sure that the built-in flash does not light when receiving calls and messages. You may not notice it, because the phone is always on the back.
This can be turned off: Settings> Accessibility> listening> Alarming flash
Tomorrow I will check how much battery I saved
My idle drain was over 60mAh per hour and over a day this was more than used by the screen. The Greenify aggressive doze helps, as does restricting mobile data in the background plus disabling all the bloat. Adding in the LDB hack has reduced idle drain to less than 40mAh per hour, not perfect but much better. To me it looks like LG thought the larger battery meant they could turn on all their rubbish and we wouldn't notice...
Going back to the subject, disabling the flash, acting as the notification light, did not bring about much improvement in battery life.

Thanks for the link. Some interesting information was in this video. The most interesting, because I've never seen it before, was to turn off Bluetooth scanning, which works even when Bluetooth is turned off.
To do this, go to settings> location> three dots> scanning> Bluetooth scanning
It seems that there are no hard and fast rules about this. Without any modification whatsoever on my G6, idle goes about 1% every 2 hours or so, even with light use. I'm running the v11d update of Oct 21. The update improved battery life that was already good. At the end of a workday, with bluetooth active and light to moderate use and a trip with Waze I typically have 75% left. It may be a regional issue with firmwares running slightly different apps in the background depending on where you are, or maybe difference in cell tower distances-- with a weak signal the phone radio powers up higher. Maybe LDB isn't used in my region (Middle East/Israel)
Are people using apps such as greenify, force doze, hibernation manager or clean master and if so what benefits in standby drain are they experiencing? Are these apps any good and do they create any problems of their own? From personal experience removing QuickMemo using adb commands improved my battery standby drain a little. What changes should be made in developer options to improve battery life such as animations or limit background processes etc. Nougat is set up to manage battery life in a certain way, so I just want to make sure I don’t make any changes or install any 3rd party apps that make my battery life even worse. What I have come to realise is that the G6 and the snapdragon 821 are not set up for efficient battery standby. Previously, I had a vodaphone smart ultra 6 (rebadge zte blade) with a 3000mah battery on marshmallow that would last upto 4 days on a single charge!
