[Q] i9505 battery draining overnight - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
i don't particularly have problems with the battery life of my s4, but sometimes i get weird drains, like 25% overnight. The weird thing is i deactivate every toggle except for flight mode and battery saving mode. I thought it's rather peculiar that my battery drains in what in my opinion should be like the most battery friendly mode i could think of.. anyone any suggestions on how to solve this? On the first picture i dont really complain about the first 2 drops because that could be caused by gaming, but maybe it's in there too, the last one however is with all toggles off from a certain point (you can see my wifi and screen turn off), but there isn't really a change in steepness of dropping... the second picture is my toggle setup. Any help would be appreciated

I have exactly same problem! Any ideas?

well as always... first check your wakelocks with better battery stats (free on xda forums).
i had a drain over night too. even on my s2.
it was my routers fault... bought a new one and drain is fixed.
but maybe it's just an app for you which gets your phone out of stand by. so check out better battery stats

Same here. Already used better battery stats. Nothing suspicious which could've drained the battery that much

Battery problems?

My new note's battery seem weird after I let it run to 1% and then charge up to 100%.
After that, it seems to lose battery very much faster.
Left overnight, it went from 79% to 49%!! a 30% drop!!
I checked Battery status report battery health is good and average 33-35 degrees temperature.
Bulk of battery usage is reported for Display (62%, "time on" of 1hr 30m) ...
Is this normal??
What can I do?
Thanks.
Maybe the battery needs some recalibration, run it down to 1% then charge the phone while its still off.
Here's the battery level profile...
Not sure what is keeping the phone awake even while screen-off??
Any help or advice to diagnose and resolve the battery issues appreciated.

Try a factory reset and then calibrate the battery.
Just woke up after the first night with the Note. I had 45% battery left when i went to bed, and now 9 hours later it's at 43%.

You diagnosed the problem correctly by identifying the device being awake while the screen is off. I suggest two tools to narrow it down:
1. Cpu Spy, Market, free, displays how much time the CPU spent in the different power states. During the night it should almost completely be in deep sleep.
2. BetterBatteryStats, Market, ~2.50$, allows to identify apps with wakelocks, apps which prevent the system to enter the deep sleep power state while the screen is off and the device basically is idleing. On CM Spareparts xan do that for free, for Samsung devices I first have to find a free alternative app that works...
No wipe needed (yet), no delete this or do that. First find the villain, then shoot em, not the other way round.

Installed BetterBatteryStats,
but there is lots of information, and I have little clue what these constitute or how to identify what apps cause the issues??
You could post screenshots of all the screens of betterbatterystats and we will try to help you.
Charge the phone to 100% and disconnect it right before you go to sleep, enter cpuspy and reset its counters. Then enter task manager and kill all the programs and clean the memory. Now go to sleep and when you wake up post screenshots of the built in battery stats, betterbatterystats and cpuspy.
Hi
I have a similar problem, my battery keeps draining entirely too much for what I think it should. Mine gets drained about 40% in about 10 hours of very light use.
BetterBatteryStats shows it is WiFi that has a humongous amount of wakelocks, but the thing here is I have WiFi disabled.
Image (BetterBatteryStats): http://antti.vahtera.org/images/SC20111221-020623.png
CPU Spy shows nothing that looks that weird to me, although I rather wonder why so little deep sleep and so much 200MHz, but that might be if deep sleep has a longer "counter" than it did on SGS/SGS2. If I use the phone to check time, or twitter from a widget couple of times per hour, does SGN enter deep sleep during those "breaks"?
Image (CPU Spy): http://antti.vahtera.org/images/SC20111221-020441.png
But, the one that caught my eye, was the stock Battery Info window. During the (almost) entire 10h time the phone was awake?! Why in the whole wide world? Does SGN really have some bug with WiFi keeping it awake even though it is disabled?
Image (Battery Info -window): http://antti.vahtera.org/images/SC20111221-020744.png
I really wanna get behind this. I love this phone, but this battery drainage begins to be a problem for me. I got about 2-5% drain per night with SGS2 and 10-15% per day on similar usage.

yeah, there's something seriously wrong with your phone. Are you rooted ? would you consider a full wipe and maybe a different ROM ?
Not rooted, not modified in any serious way either. (Using GO Launcher EX, not TouchWiz launcher, that's really the extend of modification on this phone.)
Android version is 2.3.6, Baseband N7000XXKK5, kernel 2.6.35.7-N7000XBKK4
This is what was shipped with the phone. It's unbranded and unlocked.
I haven't really done anything to it but installed apps from Android Market (and a couple with Samsung Apps).
EDIT: This is my day-to-day phone with all settings as I like them and all things set, so I would like if I wouldn't have to do a full wipe. But if nothing else helps, I guess I'll have to, in the end.
I hope someone will be able to help you cause I've never seen anything like that.

This might help...
I had the same problem. The first night my Note was dropping from 100% down to about 50% when I was asleep and the screen was off.
In the battery stats I could see that it was the Android core that used all this power.
So I tried a couple things to see if it helped:
1) I went to WiFi-settings and set it to turn off WiFi when screen off. This is a setting that is not on by default, you have to set it yourself.
2) I turned off AutoSync (Google account and so on)
Those to settings removed the overnight powerdrain problem. The next night it only went from 100% to about 98% when I slept
And since I am a serious betterysaver I also turned off autolight on screen, and set it to lowest light possible (still nice picture). I turned on the "Autoadjust screenpower), turned off all animations, turned off all kind of vibrations on the phone.
I left the"System powersetting" alone. It didnt save much power and it made the phone slower.
All in all, now my battery is great, I still have lot of juice left after a full day of using my Galaxy Note
I seem to have fixed my problem, without having to do a full wipe. I don't know which part it was that finally did it, but I'm glad it now behaves like I think it should. (about 2% battery drain in ~5h in pocket, one 1min phonecall and two or three times checking time from lockscreen.)
Anyway, I apparently ALSO had the infamous problem with Mediaserver eating humongous amounts of battery, so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with the WiFi keeping it awake or was just a separate problem.
Long story short, here's what I did:
a) installed JuiceDefender, had it manage Wifi
b) turned Wifi on, restart
c) turned Wifi off, restart
[d) installed nomedia manager and excluded most directories from mediascanner]
e) turned phone off, recharged to 100%.
Seems to be working now. No WiFi wakelocks, no mediaserver eating CPU, deep sleep ~70% of the time.

Battery drain while sleeping

Hello
I have a samsung s4 i9500 new phone about 4 months old. I encoutered many battery problems so i installed Arrow rom, which i fell in love with it in a sec, it had everything and the battery life was just amazing. (Thanks to all who contributed into making this amazing rom).
But something happened when i installed an app about adds and it kinda restored my phone yo factory settings, i didnt care much for the reset, but i found out that my battery life ia no longer like before. Let me give you my states before and after.
Ps: i reinstalled the rom hoping better resulta but it was the same
I sleep usually at 1pm and wake up at 10. Thats 9 hours, when my phone was fine it only drained about 10% or 12%.
But as in for today for example, i slept 7 hours and it drained 20%.
Most of the draining came from android oa at 89%.
Please note that before i go to sleep i always charge my phone to 100%
Is there something wrong? Ill do any test to solve mu problem.
Thanks all

Hi.
U should install BBS app and post "other" and "partial wakelocks" screenshots so that we can tell what's eating up yr battery life.
Cheers.
deep sleep!
Yeah BBS is definitely the way to go..also you might want to check skipjack's awesome thread for better batt life when idle (insanely )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357417
I got better batt life with my s4 after i did some of their tips on this thread..
Sweetdreams to your phone's battery! ))
I have attached my files, btw the battery is kinda weird, one day it drained about 40% but somedays drains way less, keep in mind that when i go to sleep i turn off my wifi and use edge network, and power savor too.
Some solutions that I follow that kind of stopped severe battery drain and got the phone in deep sleep mode:
- Disable "Scanning Always Available" from Advanced settings of WiFi
- Disable GPS and 'Use Wireless Networks' from Location settings menu
- Greenify apps and a few services
- Before putting the phone down for good, clear all the recently opened apps by pressing and holding the HOME button and clearing them all. Then open up the task manager and clear RAM.
- To get the phone into deep sleep (you can monitor this using a free app called WakeLock detector, available on PlayStore), if you have the habit of switching on the screen and then switching it off whilst being in the lockscreen mode (just like you check time quickly without unlocking the device), the S4 DOES NOT go into deep sleep mode even though the screen is switched off.
To solve this, you need to unlock the screen, get to homescreen and switch off screen from there instead of directly locking/switching off the screen without unlocking the device. Yes, it's hell and I don't know why this issue persists :/

[Q] Battery Drain Samsung s5 4gLTE

My battery life was amazing when i bought the phone lasted like 2 days
Recently I got an update of less than 150mb after that my battery life is now horrible in normal mode it lasts 9 hours the screenshot i attached show my phones battery usage on POWER SAVING mode (50% used on power saving mode in 9hrs at NIGHT when i don't use the phone)
and rite now i'm charging the phone again dont know whats wrong with it.
(It doesn't overheat or anything just loses battery.)
Will appreciate if someone can help troubleshoot this issue.

First of allI would say that your active GPS is a high battery drain so I would turn it of and see again if the battery drain is still that high.
Thnx turned off GPS and restarted phone now it's fine 85% from 100% in five hours with moderate use.
So is my GPS app is faulty?
I use maps a lot so how do I keep my GPS on but without this issue, my GPS was on from purchasing time but nothing like this happened.
Hoping for a permanent fix.
Once again appreciate the prompt help.

it's hard to answer your question without any other details. do you use any widgets? any apps that might cause waking of the device? use apps that could show the wakelocks during deep sleep
I use the s health, the clock and calender and the track id however I went back to the store even after reset the issue was there They said I can change the fone but didn't have the black color ( white to me looks tacky) so I got the m8 instead. Thnx for the help.

change location service mode to power saving when not using maps, change to gps only when you need. Turn off bluetooth and wifi tethering. Switch to HSPA when you're using map because you don't need lte speed.

Unexplainable battery drain

For a month or more I'm facing totally unexplainable battery drain.
As seen on the screens below, the phone is awake, but it is not detected anywhere - not by android nor by GSam. In any case the battery draws faster.
I have one observation tho - this happens after I make phone calls. Not every time, but once per 2,3 days.
Any ideas?

You have this problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/explanation-horrible-note-4-battery-t3004274
I'm pretty sure that I don't have this issue. Yes, the percentage in GSam maybe high, but I don't believe this reflects what is happening.
First of all - I don't have bad battery life. Usually my over night drain is less than 1%/1h.
Second - the issue appears sporadically.
Third - in the provided thread I don't see the issue appearing in stock battery monitor, while mine appear.
At last - my battery drains faster only while the issue is present and before I restart. After that it is back to normal ...
@Spo0f
Just some suggestions maybe you're using 3g I always have that turned off and switch it on when I use it my guess is that some apps are causing your drain after a call maybe like you said if you're not fimiliar with greenify I suggest you use it to stop all those apps and system apps also uninstall all those bloatware you don't need or at least freeze them if you don't mind lower the resolution to 1080p with nomone app use power save or disable dvfs and use an app to lower and raise the CPU to save juice when not needed....
Thanks for the suggestions, but as I said - this problem appear sporadically - home when using WiFi as well as outside when using 3G.
All of the rest is done - I'm no newby

Oh sorry mate well I don't use much 3g so I can't help you there but if you're having drainage when you're using WiFi in general then maybe you should reconsider investigating the post above with the link I don't have so much drainage on connectivity with 3g or WiFi....viewing the pics you uploaded it seems suspicious.... Maybe an app? I don't know...
Use wakelock detector

My overnight drain was also very low, but that was because the faulty device on the network was asleep at night too (my desktop).
If you're not rooted, use the PC version of Wakelock Detector at the end of your day and post screenshots of your highest drainers for the various categories. In my case, the device was being woken up by something on the network and it showed.
Bear in mind that actively downloading something in the time period will also raise wifi power used but more stats will help.
The fact that you're still experiencing a lot of drain even when outside suggests it might be a rogue app
One phone call today and after it the phone stayed awake.
Because I had issue with the PC WLD the screen shots are from 11 minutes after one of the disconnects. The device was awake all of them.

I also checked out my battery behaviour this night and was very disappointed. Although my phone was in flight mode and every peripherals and services shut down, today morning my phone was crying for energy. So I made a quick investigation in my power diagram and found out, that "Android OS" requested a wakelock during the whole power-on time. So I installed "CPU Spy" to check in which states the phone was really over the whole charging period. I couldn't believe my eyes. Although the kernel should do it's job good, cause most of the CPU times are in lower freqeuncy states, the deep sleep mode was never activated.
Therefore I installed an app called "Wakelock Detector" to check out which apps could cause that. I found out, that S Health had a big amount of wakelocks and also active-time, so the first thing was to disable S Health. After some minutes I checked back, but nevertheless still no deep sleep time in "CPU Spy".
So I searched around and found another one arguing about the wakelocks and that they could be the products of some programming issues concerning WiFi. The should be gone, after turning off WiFi and rebooting yout phone. And it seems that he was right. I waited some time and hooray, "CPU Spy" listed the phone state "Deep Sleep" the first time as an active state and also with the major active-time. So at least that was some step ahead. (I have to remark, that S Health was already unfrozen at this time, so S Health should not be responsible in any way.)
The next step was to reactivate WiFi, leave it on and set the phone on standby. After some time I checked back again the phone showed even more deep sleep time. So that was an improvement. I reactivated everything and waited some time... Deep Sleep all over the time. Can't figure out for now, if it was S Health, WiFi, or anything else that caused the wakelock for sure. At least the reboot helped. I'll check that out on a long-term test, maybe I get some further conclusions.

Need advice about battery drain

Hey everyone, I purchased the 6P a week ago and I really don't understand the battery in this thing.... I'm coming from LG G3 which never faced battery drain during stand by. I am not even using the 6P (still haven't migrated from the G3) because of the unreasonable battery drain during sleep, I have WiFi always on and (no I don't accept to turn it to Never during sleep) I never did this with any phone anyway, my G3 doesn't lose more than 1-2% during the whole night (7 hours).
Please take a look and tell me if this makes any sense because I'm thinking of returning the thing if it's not just a software issue:

Taken today, phone left untouched at home.
Battery life is really hit or miss, many lose 0-3% during the night while others like yourself lose a ton. Try changing your WiFi to either 2.4GHz only or 5GHz only, as some found that helps out. Custom kernels can also control WiFi wakelocks, and I've found running Franco kernel does a great job at helping standby life.
How's the signal strength from within your home? Having a weak cell signal can assist in battery drain. However that's some serious drainage. I'm thinking you have one or more wakelocks preventing the phone to deep sleep. If you're rooted, greenify is a must. It has boosted my battery life by a ton. I would also try to get some more battery stats applications. Better battery stats was/is my favorite app but I'm not sure its working on MM

Although it is not convenient to switch between the 2 bands ( Work is on 2.4GHz and Home is on 5GHz) but I will try it to see if it helps any.
Do you think this will be fixed with software update? and is it because Android M or because 6P on Android M?

Signal strength is fine at my home ( never faced an issue with G3).
I haven't installed anything that can hog battery like that, I only set-up Email, Hangouts to Sync, I never used Greenify or any battery saving apps ( The battery should last as advertised with it's standard capacity), i'm not asking for a magical battery life, just what's expected of a 3450 mAh.
I'll post Sambatterystats results shortly.
See if WiFi scanning is turned off
Many say the battery drain issue really spiked with the update to Android 6.01. So it appears to be SW related, and not HW, FWIW.
I found my fix is as Geoff53 said above, install a custom kernel (Kylo in my case). And I use Greenify on top of it. Great battery life now.

I hope it's just the 6.0.1 .. because I really would hate to return it..
Well, I'd go as far as flashing a custom ROM if that would completely solve the problem, not just the Kernel.
I initially had bad batter drain, not now. Unplug 6:30 am and 10pm still have 45%. Use to be dead by 7pm. I found the culprits were bad apps that I thought were OK. Ebay, Amazon, Facebook, ESPN, Waze.... when I deleted these and a few more, then rebooted all was good. Haven't tried putting them back though. I leave GPS, WIFI, blue tooth... all on. Even have 3 mail apps all set to "push." I don't twitter though.
Make a back up with Titanium or MyBackup, factory wipe and reset and see if your battery improves with only basic apps and mail. Bet it's bad apps. If improves slowly add apps until you find the culprit.

In my opinion, the " Bad App" theory is getting a bit out of hand. I installed the same apps as on my G3 (never had a bad app on it) , and 6P has been factory reset and insatlled nothing at all, only logged into gmail and hangouts, and I tried with the (WiFi during sleep set to never ) then the drain is not as bad anymore but I lost realtime push notifications which is unacceptable.
Now if believe there are so many "bad apps" then we can have the Doze which is supposed to minimize app drain if not terminate it, but that's not the case here obviously, so I think it's actually specific WiFi bug on Android M and not bad apps.
