hi , Does anyone know how resilient HD2 screens are to image burn in.
Is there a way to have the backlight go off rather than dimmed after a time on non use without disabling the auto screen brightness on normal use. I want to have the HD2 working (gps app) 24/7, and have had to untick switch off after a certain period of activity to keep it from switching off, but I cant find an option or hack to have the backlight off but the unit still operative other than to disable the auto brightness which I like and then manually turn it down. Its automatic dimming still leaves it unnecessarily bright with no one looking at it and I did think about image burn with extended periods even at 30 percent brightness. Thx folks.

On a number of occasions, I've used Market apps to control the screen brightness, either manually (like a brightness widget) or scheduled (using Timeriffic - a great tool for automatic profile changes throughout the day).
Apparently, these apps are not aware of the correct minimum brightness supported by the Leo, making it too easy to go too low, which essentially disables the display completely.
Touch still works, so if I'm lucky enough to remember the location of the widget/slider/controls, I may be able to turn brightness back up to a "sane" level.
For example, Timeriffic turns the screen off with a brightness level of 10% - 15% is the lowest working setting.
If I'm unable to fix it this way, I'm basically forced to reset. The problem is that Android *remembers* this setting after a reboot, and reapplies it just when the device is vibrated slightly at the "Android" logo animation. Thus, with a black screen, it is impossible for me to unlock the SIM, hard to unlock the screen lock, and virtually impossible to correct the brightness setting. I need to remove my data.img ("hard resetting" Android) and restore what I can from backups.
The problem also seems to occur with the standard screen dimming which occurs at about half time before the "screen off" setting. I can see the display start to dim, then it suddeny turns off. In this case, however, Android of course reverts to normal brightness at the touch of the screen or press of a button.
On a related note, I have experienced (like right now) that brightness range used by Android is much dimmer then normal. That is, using the regular brightness slider in Settings, I can only vary between almost invisible (min) and quite dim (max). Curiously, in this situation, the display can get *much* dimmer than normal, without becoming disabled.
Any ideas on these issues would be most welcome!

- Shine a bright light on the screen - the graphics are still there if you look really hard. It's not a joke!
- Use Screencast in Droid Explorer to "remote control" your Android

I don't know these app(s) but if they are writing their settings and configured values into a ini or settings file, than you might be able to connect via adb and change the setting by this way.
With tools like Droidexplorer or ADB magic, browsing through the files should be very comfortable and you might find the correct file.

What happens? That brightness is set too low, essentially disabling the screen, so you're forced to hard reset or perform some root magic? How do you cope with it? Or does it happen that the permitted brightness range is just dimmer than usual?
Btw, until there is no light-sensor support in kernel, you can't use such apps for the brightness

I have had the same issue with the brightness range being too low. The max brightness is really dim and the colors don't seem right. That may just be the dimming effect though. If I restart the phone it seems to take care of this. I have not had the screen go below the minimum level and turn off though.
is there a fix for this. i just experienced this problem

As long as you have a working WinMo it should be possible to edit the values of brightness, but I have no idea where this information is stored.
Deleting Android folder and unzipping again is esentially restoring to factory settings.
yea this happens to me all the time, its a *****. it cuts off at exactly 12% for me. what i do is have aldiko(a book reader) on the home screen. if i click on it and open a book i can just swipe on the left side of the screen to adjust brightness. since i know that its on the home screeen on the right side middle, i can usually find my way back to it.

which means that i'll lose everything such as data correct? new contacts etc. msgs...
any thing on this... isnt their a file in the android folder that i could maybe replace to restore to factory settings.
and could someone post a screen shot of their phone so i know where the numbers for the pin code lockscreen. tryin to get past that, then i can adjust my brightness
LOL I experienced it one time. And I must delete data.img to restore the phone. After this, I don't use any brightness tools (except ones already in the Android build).

Well i was able to get my screen back to normal. lol.
I didnt delete the data.img, i simply copied it and then removed it, started a fresh install, and then just marked on my screen where the numbers were, turned it off, put the old data.img back. Followed my marks, and was able to unlock it and then found the power control widget. And bam! screen back to bright...

Erm... In similar circumstances I found this worked...
I was trying out different Android builds and I found a screen brightness widget. It had various available levels of brightness, one being 0%. As soon as I selected it I felt pretty stupid as true to it's word it gave me 0% brightness placing me in a similar position to the OP.
My Solution. I used my (very bright) led torch to light the screen. By playing around with the angle and beam width I found I could just make out the on screen graphics enough to re-adjust the brightness level.
Simples!
Just as " Justblair " said .. you can place your device under a very bright light thus you'll be able to see the screen and what it's showing .. idk what build you guys are using but in cyanogen you can adjust the lowest dim level so that any app or widget tries to set the brightness to 0% it's automatically set to your preset, 15% for instance.

Cyanogen allows you a max dim level of 26 - which is too little on the HD2.
In Tasker, 30 is the lowest setting that still provides light. Maybe Cyanogen can be patched for the HD2 in coming builds?

Another tip is to use Droid Explorer's "Screencast" feature, to view and control your Android's screen on your PC desktop. Of course, the brightness setting has no effect here.
So I've been doing some general googling, and I haven't come across a good solution for my issue, so I thought I would post it here. Nexus 7 is mounted on the dash of my car. Powers on and powers off (deep sleep), connects to hotspot fine, generally, is working great. HOWEVER, there is one feature that I would love to be able to replicate from OEM in dash systems that I've seen. I would like the screen to dim when the unit isn't actively being used. Not time out and go to sleep, just dim (or maybe even turn off the LED backlight). Then, when I tap the screen, I want the screen to come back to automatic brightness mode based on the ambient light sensor. I've found plenty of apps that will turn the screen on or off with various gestures and such, but they all seem to require disabling or otherwise changing the way the ambient light sensor works. From those of you that use these in your car, I'm hoping that you have some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

What you suggest certainly sounds feasible. I have no immediate solution, just some ideas/pointers.
Three pieces of software come to mind...
A Custom Launcher such as Apex or Nova. These give you a double tap gesture on the screen, which you can associate with some action to run... app, shortcut or 'activity'.
Lux Auto Brightness.

This is capable of reducing the screen brightness right down to zero, such that the device looks likes it's turned off.

An app which is capable of automating all sorts of things on an Android device. You can associate an action instigated by the the user with a desired objective. Unfortunately, it has a bit of a steep learning curve... I bought it myself a few months ago, and I still haven't got around to really fully understanding it.
I suspect that if you can 'associate' Lux Auto Brightness (set with some pre-arranged brightness settings, ie., a completely dark screen) with a specified action (like double tapping the screen) with either Apex or Nova launchers (via gesture) or possibly with Tasker, maybe via a script...then you may be able to accomplish your goal.
As I've said, I think that what you're asking sounds possible... it's just a case of finding the right apps, and 'stitching' them all together. And maybe with a bit of tinkering with the apps I've mentioned, you can, hopefully, get something that works,

I'm currently considering exchanging my Note 4 (due to it's sheer size) for the Turbo, but I'm concerned about not having an LED notification.
I did however read that the Active Display works really well with notifications. The thing is, I despise having locked screens on my personal phones (work phones are different story). Does Active Display require a locked screen to work?

what do you mean with locked screen?
pattern security?
i can tell from my previous droid maxx that active display works on locked by pattern or unlocked phone. and you can even choose to show the notification or just the app. (i.e. active display showing the whatsapp message you just got or just the whatsapp icon to let you know that you have a new message.)

Yes, it works if you don't have any lock screen setup. Actually it works better (definitely faster) imo because Active Display just opens up the app right away, when you scroll up with the notification icon. Otherwise, you scroll up on the AD icon, then get stuck having to enter your password/pin, and finally the app opens up.
As others said, you do not need security for Active Display, if it works anything like the Moto X.
I use Tasker and Secure Settings to toggle PIN lockscreen when I'm on home WiFi. If I leave home, my lockscreen is reactivated, but Active Display still works. I usually don't leave my phone sit long enough to lock during the day (30 minutes), but if it does lock, swiping the active display brings you to the lockscreen to put in your PIN. It's not the same as the normal lock screen, it's like a "popup" that only shows the keypad. It does not show the clock, alarms, etc (which I think is actually just the stock lockscreen widget).
If lockscreen is off, swiping the Active Display takes you straight to the home screen.

having swapped out my GS3 (worst phone i ever owned) for a Droid Maxx last year i can say that Active Display (now Moto Display i think?) is the greatest thing ever!...I was worried about losing the LED notification back then, but active display is just plain better...
and now it does not require a lock screen setup afaik

On my GS3 (and now Note 4) I turn off my locked screen so that once I click on the power button it turns on my non-locked display.
So correct me if I'm wrong. With Active Display it will let me know of any notifications when it senses my hand wave and I won't have to click on the power button to turn on my non-locked display - instead just some kind of tap patten or something?

Correct. If there is no lock screen, the Active Display shows the clock and notification icons. On the Moto X you can swipe down to unlock to the home screen, up to go to the app with the most recent notification, or swipe left/right to dismiss the current notifications from Active Display.
Active Display it self sort of serves as a lock screen, just a slide to unlock. If you press the physical power button the phone turns on to the home screen.
But would I still be able to use the power button to go straight to the home screen similarly to the way I have it setup on my GS3 and Note 4?

On the Moto X 2013, if you have Screen Lock set to none and Active Display on, you will see notifications on the screen in the order they arrive (most recent is "featured" in the ring, others are shown below it. When you touch the Active Display ring, you swipe up to go to that app/notification. If you swipe down, it just "unlocks" and goes to your home screen. Swipe left or right clears the pending notifications from Active Display. Pressing the power button on the side will go straight to the home screen.
Using Active Display with a security method will do all of those same things, but if your lock screen timeout has surpassed, you will have to put in your PIN/password before you can go to a notification from Active Display. If you press the power button instead of using Active Display, you are taken to the PIN/password screen.

Me replying with "awesome" = yourself and others did a superb job explaining everything to me and making this a non-concern for me regarding potentially getting the Turbo.
But totality appreciate you giving me more input on how the Active Display works, especially the breathing aspect.
Regarding using the Active Display to wake up a non-locked screen instead of the power button, I was actually curious to see if there were others who are adjusted to using the Active Display for this purpose and now prefer it over the power button.
Otherwise, I'm now really excited to go demo it tomorrow and see for myself how it works.

I nearly always use the screen gesture to turn on the display, usually to the home screen.
When you move the Moto X at all (I usually just tap it so it rocks to one side on the curved back, or "twist" it slightly while it is laying on the table) the active display comes up. This is usually just to check the time. You can also hold on the unlock ring and see some of the details for the current pending notifications. For example, if Fenix has a notification, I can hold the unlock ring and see the first few bits of the notification to see if I really want to unlock for that or not.
From there I can let go (nothing happens), swipe up to open Fenix, swipe down for home screen, or swipe left/right to clear that notification from Fenix.
You will get used to AD very quickly.
I didn't even think about this phone missing an LED notification. I've got an S3 as well and always have depended upon the different colors to let me know when i get a message/email, etc across the room or my desk while on the charger. I suppose I won't be charging as much anymore but its nice for those that don't keep their phone in their pocket all day. I don't always feel vibrations and am just used to depending on the LED light.

Yeah, little things like that are borderline panic worthy for some of us. TBH, I find that on average friends who have iPhones take a decent while longer to get back to me than those with Android phones or even Blackberries. Why? Because if they miss a call, sms, or email there's no way of knowing unless they actually physically touch there phone. At least this was the case last time I checked or of course they can always enable "LED Flash for Alerts"....smh.
So coming back to the topic - I gave it some thought and feel like this Active Display is probably an even better option than LEDs.
Instead of the LED notifications on our GS3s lighting up in different colors (the correlation of which I still haven't memorized even to this day), we'll now have Motorola's Active Display which allows for "breathing" when there are notifications. What this does is cause your screen to flash every couple of seconds with notification information. This is awesome because at a glance you'll now know exactly what's going on. So if you're like me and like it when your nearby phone let's you know you may have missed a call, sms, or email then this seems like it'll be quite useful. You also have the option of turning the "breathing" off at night along with managing which apps you wish to work with the AD.
At least I hope that is the case because I've never really spent a lot of time with a Moto X (only briefly on one of my friend's). So for those who are AD vets if I said something that's off please correct me.

This new AD is great and all but a lot of the time when my phone is charging at a friends house or at work, it's across the room. So I don't see anything but an LED helping me track the state from there. I'm still going to get the new phone and figure out how to deal with the difference but I think it's a stupid miss on something obvious from the manufacturer. But what do I know? Maybe it was part of the reason to keep the cost down.

Don't think we'll need to be charging our Turbos at a place other than the comfort of our own personal nightstands given the battery capacity we're getting here.
Otherwise, yeah, LEDs are nice to have for when your phone is in a non-nearby situation and you wish to quickly glance at it for an update.
Is there any way to stop the phone from vibrating whenever I change panels on the e-ink screen? Switching between the YotaPanels and YotaCover or moving between panels always produces a vibration and I can't find a way to get rid of it.
The same thing when drawing a pattern to unlock the phone when in YotaPanel mode (when drawing the panel in YotaMirror no vibration is produced, as configured).
I got the phone last week and it's still with the original Android 4.4.3 that came with it, in case that makes a difference.
Did you or anybody else figure out how to turn off vibrations on eink?
Go to Settings -> Soubnd & Notification
Disable Vibrate on touch for always on display.
It is working using Android 6.0.1 RU version
