Since running CM11-CM12.1, it seems the last few months that the camera app (or any other camera app) focuses terribly. I know for a fact that galaxy s5 models running stock firmware focus very well even in low lit situations, mine does not as long as it is booted up to CM.
I am curious if anyone knows if there has been firmware updates specific to the camera module of the t-mobile or all variants and if that can be flashed without having to install the entire stock firmware image to get those modules to update their firmware.
Does anyone else have focusing issues on their s5 in a non-stock rom? Focusing on an object 12" from the camera with plenty of contrast really struggles sometimes.

I don't think you are supposed to post statements/questions in the development thread. But yes, I hate the way the camera is on CM, that is why I try and stay away. I use the camera too much to have to deal with it.
You are so right. Its terrible.
Their is plenty of free camera apps that work great on cm 12.1 i use open camera and its great

Does having a custom non-Touchwiz ROM change the camera performance? Like Cyanogen mod or AOKP, I'm not entirely sure what a ROM changes. Would the quality of the other modes change (HDR, HDR video, etc)?
We'll never have sammy camera on aosp/cm. You need tw framework for it to run. Thats the only downside of aosp/cm. But honestly im on rooted stock and im loving everything about this phone. Ive ran aosp/cm on all my phones and hated touchwiz. The s4 has definately made me content for now.
ATT S4 Rooted. Beastin.

I understand that the Samsung camera application cannot be ported over, but is the performance of the camera still the same? Basically do pictures taken still look like the same quality? My other major question is what modes are available? Other than just normal is there HDR, night, etc.

I flashed CM 10.1 about 1 hour ago, shortly before deleting my only System files on it (DOH!). Anyway, I noticed the camera wasn't good at all in CM 10.1. I dont know if its just the way it looks, I didnt take a single picture, but I didnt like it and its one of the reasons im going back to stock.
Do you know if the camera quality will get better?
Just install a different camera app from the Play Store. I use Fotor and it takes excellent pics.

Hi. I have been very impressed by my former Note2 LTE. I can focus and snap any picture I want, especially of human faces and moving animals. However, my S4 LTE seems to take a second to focus and shutter to snap, resulting in missing the person's expression i want to take and results also in some blurry images. I tried other apps like Fx camera, but no improvement. Only Fast camera app can solve it except the maximum resolution is 2.1 mp. Even my lousy iphone 5 camera is faster and takes nicer pictures. On the whole, taking still shots of sceneries result in nice pictures but it is just too slow. Is it software issue? Flashed newer firmwares but still the same. I find it distressing as i take pictures of my kids alot. Thank you
sadly that's pretty common case for all S4 variants, including my i9500 and samsung really needs to do something about it. Custom roms or rooting your phone and removing some bloatware might help, but i haven't rooted my phone yet so i am not too sure.
Mine's rooted. On stock debloated slim rom xxuame2. No camera improvements at all
I know this is an old topic, but i just re-flashed KitKat .ftf file today (C6903_14.6.A.0.368_TW.ftf, because i lost root along the custom ROM-flashing madness ), and i noticed that the Camera on the KitKat firmware is so much smoother and faster than on stock Lollipop, and so much much better the custom 6.0 ROMs for that matter (albeit they suffer from a known Camera problem). Now that i'm flashing back to stock 5.1.1, does anyone know how to optimize the camera app? It just seems a little unfair that the camera on 4.4.4 gives you such a better experience than the one on 5.1.1.
P.S: I have unlocked the bootloader, but the Kitkat Camera app is unaffected.
Lollipop is better
yeah, it would seem LP camera works better in lowlight. i'm trying the Camera app on Kryptonian ROM, which is ported from Xperia X, btw.
I will try to make this quick and clear: Since the battery change for my Z1 the rear glass didnt get well glued, so the flash light interfere with the camera, the pictures taken with flash were very ugly, so every picture i take, i make it without flash, and i dont know how neither why but the camera takes light from nowhere and it gives to me very clear pictures, like if you have a lightbulb in front, i have very clear pictures, i must say that i am using a custom rom (mx rom 8.5)

I had this problem too and I removed the back glass, I washed the camera and the glass and then I glued it with glass glue. Now it is perfect
Kitkat camera viewfinder is much smoother than Lollipop. I didn't notice any other difference but that was the most obvious one. Thankfully there's a nice mod here that makes the viewfinder crazy fast again in Lollipop so there. Anyway, I cleaned up my lens with a small amount of toothpaste, and everything went better, shots were more clear, no more blurs, etc.
MX ROM camera vs Snapchat camera. There are a huge difference

In my case, only when i am in a very low light condition, but when the light is good, the pictures taken are not the best but they are good
Hi There,
one of the main reasons why I bought the S7 Edge initially was its great camera.
The reason why I haven't yet installed a Custom Rom was because I wasn't sure if the custom rom / camera app would provide the same picture-quality as the original one.
Will the Picture quality suffer from a custom camera app, or is the relevant software "build into" the chip, and therefor independent from the actual camera app?
Thanks a lot!
If a TW based ROM is used, the stock camera app can be used, so the phto quality will be the same. If you got root on this ROM you can even access more features of the camera with the Zerocam MOD.
If an AOSP base ROM is used, the quality is not equal. Samsung did not release all the libraries needed to access the hardware of the S7 camera properly. But nowadays you can reach, with third apps, the same quality of the photos as the TW based ROMs.

I have tried many of the proposed solutions to achieve good camera quality in an AOSP based ROM and can only say that none of them came even close to the quality of the stock camera. Also, the speed was not comparable.
To compare I used a test scenario with poor lighting conditions and always took the same pictures. While for instance on images taken with the stock camera one could read the text on a package, on the other images you couldn't even tell that it was text.
Any news on this? As the S7 is end of life, the TW based ROMs are also not an alternative anymore. Is there any chance to get roughly the same camera quality with a LineageOS ROM? What third party apps deliver a decent quality?
you can use google camera. lol
Hello and a Happy New Year!
I wonder if/how it is possible to have the original LG G3 (D855) camera app AND up-to-date security patches on this phone.
While currently I am running LOS 16.0, I found that the available camera app produces very unsharp photos in darker surroundings as compared to the original LG G3 camera app on the latest available Marshmallow (from 2016, though, and thus lacking newer security patches).
So I am looking for some compromise where security is slightly more important than crisp photos.
Any recommendations for alternatives to the original MM and LOS 16.0? Or shall I try different camera apps instead on LOS?
Thank you so much for your hints.
Worth to note: My Samsung S7 produced much better photos with its original camera app in the exactly same surroundings (tested same objects with both mobiles at dusk). Whether this is hardware-related or because of the (non-)stock camera apps, I do not know, but that would become too OT here, so please read this just as some background information from me.

The G3 camera just Is but great. Nothing can be done. The S7 is also 2 years newer than the G3. But the G3 wasn’t known for the best photos.
It could be a hardware problem or wear with the camera. Back when the G3 had just came out my camera was decent. While my friends same model the camera was dull.

Thank you. From what you wrote I understand that either I have to live with the stock MM from LG but lack the recent (and future) security patches, or to keep LOS (or another custom ROM) for better security but "weaker" camera capabilities. I have not yet tried the OpenCamera or other apps and may yet tweak the LOS camera settings for a better performance.
Or are there any ROMs that have both, i.e. current security patches and the stock LG camera (which I found quite good also in less lit surroundings before the update to LOS and LOS' camera app).
Please forgive me that I kind of repeat my question. The reason is that you (surely rightfully) wrote that the LG G3 is not known for a good camera (and older than my reference Samsung S7 and Google Nexus 4 besides). I should have stressed more my point that I find the LOS camera inferior to the original LG G3 camera app. Hence my question if there was a way to have both - LG stock camera app and up-to-date security patches, and if yes, which ROM/solution that would be.
OpenCamera bigger file than stock camera

Just double-checked image results for OpenCamera now (I use it usually) and (just shooting the trees outside my window now) stock camera highest setting gives me a 2.3mb file whereas OpenCamera set to 100% quality on .webp gives me 2.6mb. Also much better privacy, no telemetry, less data, etc.

How do they differ in quality, especially at low light? I have just softbricked my G3, so I cannot yet test myself.
Late reply but I am setting up an old G3 I had lying around that was on MM before going out of service (battery). I am planning to update it to LineageOS 17.1. Before I do that I will rip the camera app APK and get it to you to see if that works?
