[Q] Glove mode? - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Note 3 and Note 4 both had an option to enable increased screen sensitivity which allowed me to control the screen while wearing heavy leather gloves.
Does the X Pure have this option?
Yes, all phones can be controlled while using specialty gloves designed for the purpose (or by using other tricks). That is not the purpose of this thread though. So please don't go there.
This is a "yes" or "no" question please.

Will be doing an indepth review of the Note - let me know your questions!

Hi everyone,
I'm getting a Note (whenever it does actually release that is).
Keen to know what questions you have about the device? Either ask here, or post a comment here (it'll probably be easier for me to track questions via the blog).
Will also be getting a Razr and Nexus if you have questions about those handsets.
Hey!
I can't wait to get this phone!!
The stylus looks interesting, and I'm keen to know whether it feels "right" as a pen and paper substitute. Can you write on the screen easily without the stylus dragging too much/feeling too slide-y etc? I'm talking purely as using this as pen/paper rather than using handwriting-recognition etc.
Oooh - also, if this is something you were planning to do, I'd be interested to know how Divx/videos look/work over HDMI out
And battery life is always a good Q, although I know it normally takes a week or two to get a feel for this.
Very jealous of your new phone! Thanks for your report
Thanks man, I waiting for one myself. My one question is: When can I upgrade to ICS? Not easy for to answer
An overall comparison between the devices would be nice.
I am so hopeful that it will come to the US on AT&T, I'll skip the SGS II for this one! I'm very interested in the stylus and its functions, if you could go over that I'd appreciate it.
Please try to include stuff that other videos don't.
It seems like the videos cover the exact same stuff over and over - it's incredibly boring. I'm close to making my own video actually, if I don't see a review that I like.
Stuff I want to know, for example:
1) Most of the stylus writing demos are stupid. They write 'HELLO' or "BOB' in huge finger paint letters.
That's not how it's supposed to be used. It's supposed to emulate a pad of paper and a pen. Can you write, say, a shopping list on it? Is it comfortable to write on? Does it have enough friction or does the stylus slide all over the place? Is it really noisy and would annoy everyone around you? (plastic vs glass = tap tap tap generally) How comfortable is the stylus?
How well does say, a regular capacitive stylus work? what exact functions will you lose? (pressure sensitivity, screenshot button, anything else?)
2) Show some pocket tests. Show how easily it slides into say, a front jeans pocket. Then sit down. Do jacket pockets, or whatever. People always ask how pocketable it is.
3) Ideally show some useful ways to use the stylus.
There's a demo of some guy circling the weather map and writing 'nice weather'. is anyone really going to do that?
The 'trace an outline to crop'- that's clever. Anything else like that?
A better example is to say, take a screenshot of a map, with buildings circled that you want to visit. I think a stylus is at its best when annotating things like documents or whatever.
4) Does the s-pad scroll, like you are a window above a larger sheet of paper? or is a fixed block?

Pocket tests +1.
Like jeans, trousers etc. Might as well have to completely refresh my wardrobe for this.
One thing that I did not see yet is how the applications would look like in 1280x800 and compare to let's say a regular 800x480.
Can we return to a 800x480 mode if we want (with a reduced window)?
How easy is it to crop images ? What are the different functions of the built in drawing program?
Are there any other apps for taking notes compatible with the pen ?
Does the pen work as a mouse in a VPN connection/remote connection to a Windows system ?
On the audio outputs, what is the maximum output level?
Can you take pictures with the volume buttons ?
Hi,
Im interested much on Note, because dont want to have both smartphone and tablet PC, so hope Note can replace both.
Im worry about matter, said on some forum & review: Note as phone is too big but as web browser is too small.
Also with a high price, i worry to buy very expensive but not for daily use product.
Pls give your review how Note is comfortable for the daily use?, Can it completely replace a smartphone and tablet ?

Here is a nice video that shows the note fitting into some jeans. I have seen most of it before, but the pocket demonstration is not till after the 14 minute mark!
BTW, I have a Dell Streak 5" and its actually a little longer than the Note. Fits into my pockets fine, even with Otterbox case...

Why on earth would you want the former?
I have some games on my current phone which don't scale, and appear in the middle. I can't stand it - the controls are impossible. ( i guess since we have the stylus it is okay, but why would you actually want this? It's not like you can open multiple windows)
I'm quite certain the answer to the last question is no - you have to use the camera app (and I beleve the galaxy s 2 is the same way)
- Frank
Is the touch experience as fluid as galaxy s2? I mean is the stylus an added bonus or a requirement? Did you try throwing it against the wall?

It's a matter of taste, and how you use a phone/tablet.
As far as tablet goes, would you be willing to go down to a 5.3" screen for pocketable 24x7 access? Depends - for example if you read a LOT, maybe you prefer that 7"/10" screen.
As far as replacing your phone goes - it's mostly how big are your hands, and how important is one handed usage? This is a two handed device, like all tablets.
- Frank
Can you also answer my concern?

It seems just like a big S2 (I have both), the stylus is a bonus, not needed.
I didn't throw it against the wall, since my S2 has become to small, so I will throw that against the wall.

This is just in case the scaling looks odd or in case the app does not launch properly.
The scaling from iphone to ipad apps is quite bad, often I don't use the scaling for iphone apps on ipad so just making sure you can remove scaling if you want to.
Please test the audio quality in headphone out and let us know if its good or atleast any better than galaxy s2.

The Stylus has nearly no friction and is sliding very fast over the glass. A little tap noise is there, but not annoying. Also the Stylus is a little bit small! imho its not very comfortable to write but for me thats ok because I just wanted the big screen

Returning my Galaxy Note

I was really excited for GNote's release and grabed one from neweggs at $789 in a blink.
Having used it for three days, and tried really hard to persude myself, I finally decided to return it. just thought to share my 2 cents.
I am not in any bit concerned with hold it against my face to make phone call. It does look kind of strange, but I don't care.
to start with, I have perfect vision, and average size hand for a man. I can use Inspire 4.3 screen with one hand entirely and comfortably.
The main reason against GNote is the loose of single hand operation -- believe me, with GNote, you will need you both hands for 80% of normal operation if you are not one of NBA players. with your current phone, try to restrict you finger motion to its own side of screen, and you will see if you can live with it.
Since my fingers can barely wrap around it, it does feel insecure on hand, and need fingers to actually 'hold' it with a bit of force. the other option is to rest it weight mostly on little finger. either way, my fingers get tired quickly. with inspire 4g, most weight supported by wrapped fingers without much notiable force.
Unlike larger tablet, which can be held by bezel, GNote's bezels are too thin to hold securely. two long sizes are too thin to hold. one size with buttons. the the only size is the top (speaker phone side), but also too thin to feel secure or not to actually touch screen with any motion.
But if GNote offers unqiue functions , I am more than willing to live with two-handed inconvenience, unfortuantely,
a). high resolution + large screen. I read magazine Zinio on my android, not to mention web browse etc. therefore I care a lot about clarity etc -- and I have perfect vision. but, the high resolution means nothing in practics. yes, it is more clear, but in the sametime, if I do not zoom in, I still can not read in Gnote, no difference from in Inspire 4G. yes, for Zinio reading, I can tell individual characters in GNote now, while in Inspire 4G, they are blur. but I still need to zoom in in GNote to actually read. in others words, the 5.3 inch size stll can not offer un-zoomed reading, the characters are just too small, inspite of how high the resolution is. Once zoomed in, I can see no difference between inspire 4g and GNote. The same for web browsing.
In 7 inch one such as nook color, I do not need to zoom in and can actually read entire page.
movie watch is a better experience in Gnote, but had to compare back to back to feel the different from 4.3 inch screen. not big benefit.
s-pen is a useful function and it works fairly well. in fact, my struggle of whether to keep GNote is not for the large screen but my desire for stylus. but there are only two apps that can effectively use it. and as a content consumption device, I don't see s-pen is so useful that I can live with the incovenicne of the two hand operation.
Again GNote is a novel product with unique features. I am sure many people will find its function worth all the inconvenience and cost. but for me, I will go back to my humble inspire 4G for now. If Samsung puts s-pen on a 4.5 inch screen device with same width of current 4.3 inch screen phone, it would be no brainer for me.

That's odd - maybe it's because I have bigger hands, but the note doesn't touch my little fingers at all, usually. my hands are kind of in a handshake position, with my fingers slightly extended.
The note rests against all my fingers - in landscape mode I might curl my index fingers around the top of the note.
- Frank
Yes the one handed operation is tougher but it's merely a very minor irritant compared to the many cool things I like about this device... One of them being size.
I can nearly use it one handed. Best way is to have one hand grip it while the other is used for typing our other tasks.

What purpose do you have for needing to be able hold and operate the Note one-handed? I really don't get this issue that some people are using as a negative for the Galaxy Note. Even the smaller 4.3" Galaxy S2 I use one hand to hold it and the other hand to operate. Outside of circumstances where you shouldn't be using your phone to begin with like while driving down the road why does the other hand need to be free during operation?

I wouldn't if you care anything about the $700+ device in your hand. Walking around using your phone in one hand while your carrying and doing things with the other is the reason so many people drop their phones. One user on this board has already shown how the screen on his Note shattered when he dropped his.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338544&highlight=car
If you want one handed operation for the Note while sitting at your desk then get the Samsung dock.
Dude.... You were born with 2 hands for a reason ----> galaxy note
With that said, im just a normal sized dude and i can quite comfortably use mine with 1 hand in all the same use scenarios as with my nexus s. Even with my nexus s i naturally wanted two hands for some things, and of course i still do with my note, but its not as if i feel i need 3 hands, as if this were the case it'd obviously become a problem

Now that was funny!
I *can* use the Note one-handed (I can wrap my hand around the Note and my thumb and "gesture" finger can just about touch), but I prefer, as has been mentioned in this thread, holding it with one and operating it with another.
yeh I find it quite annoying to not be able to use it with one hand.
especially when i am in public transport and have to hold onto something with the other hand. Its usually in public transport that I have to take my phone out and kill time too so thats really annoying.
So i can either use my note with one hand and risk dropping it, or i can use it with both hands and drop myself
So were you allowed to return it? I also saw that only exchanges are allowed on newegg for the Note. I was going to purchase mine at newegg but saw it cheaper on eBay.
I have no second thoughts about returning. This screen is just right for me web browsing, gaming, and watching videos.

So by your logic "better" isnt for everyone!?
Go big or go home....kidding aside, op is having buyer regrets and is rationalizing the return. Let the man/woman do as he/she wishes. But one advantage to having a high resolution device is it's ability to fit more information on the screen at one time, of course it'll look the same if it s zoom in.

he means the width of current 4.3 inch phones, not 4.3inch width
A different aspect ratio, like 16:9 instead of 16:10
The width of a 16:10 4.3" phone is around 2.28 inches
Why are people so concerned about using one hand. If you must use one hand then this phone is not for you, buy a smaller one. simple

Width of a phone with 4.3" screen. Thinner Bezel lets 4.5" screen fit where 4.3" did before.
I hear the OP's thoughts loud and clear. I thought long and hard the first few days I was using mine and wondered if I wouldn't be happier going back to a 4.3" device. The GSII is really a great device and I love its thinness and light weight; one handed browsing in bed is great, holding it between thumb and middle finger with thumb on bottom and middle finger on top, and fore finger used for navigation and link clicking.
Turns out I can effectively do this with the Note as well. And I actually do use the larger, higher res screen. 1/2 to 2/3 of the time I actually browse the web NOT zoomed in. It's just barely large enough for me to browse without zooming in. A higher res 4.3" or 4.6" screen would be tempting (galaxy nexus...) but I think I'd still have to zoom in for comfortable viewing.
I'm probably going to get the galaxy nexus for my girlfriend (the international version and put her in straight talk, not the lame ass locked down Verizon version) and switch phones with her for awhile, but I'll probably be fiending for my Note before long.

S-Pen Sensitivity

So I'm in love with my Note. I bought my wife the N7 for books and social media, but I really needed a productive tablet.
My question is about the S-Pen. I've never used the Note "Phablet" or any worth while stylus so I'm not sure if this is normal behavior or not.
When using S-Note, I cannot start a little line with a light press, it requires a firmer press to "activate" then I can adjust. It will also sometimes "skip" when trying to draw thin lines. I don't believe I'm pressing to lightly, because when it does this it isn't as the lightest line width, I'd say the line represents medium pressure, skips, then picks up low pressure.
It is also not registering if the angle I'm holding it at is to sharp. Anything after maybe 25-30 degrees off center is unreliable.
Just wondering what experience others have, and if this is considered defective.
EDIT: Wrong section, sorry everyone. Mods please move.
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2
Ive writen using many different angles and i havent pressed hard for it to show up you can change the width of the line in settings
Sent from my GT-N8013
if this can help you, i posted something similar a while back: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1876108
the answer is: you may have a defective unit. the nib shouldn’t move more than 0.2 mm. i got my Note exchanged, and th experience is now a bit better. sample variance could be quite high.
You may want to try switching out the tip to a plastic one. I get better results with that.

[Q] Disable completely the s-pen features

Hello to the community
I want to disable S-Pen completely and permanently on Samsung Galaxy Note 2 or Note3. I dont want the electro magnetic field of the wacom digitizer of the screen to be turned on even if the stylus in not in its silo . Is this possible with some hidden option or some extra app?
Thanks
So, probably there is no such option or app available for that purpose.
At least is it sure that there is not a emf present on wacom digitizer while s-pen is in the silo and the battery saving option is on?
Any one with emf meter (or second adnroid device with the free emf meter application) to measure if the emf desapears with the s-pen in the silo?
Thanks

I don't know if any one of you have any health problems with the produced emf of wacom digitizer. I found this site where people had health problems after long usage of wacom digitizer.

But isnt it more likely that the built in radio's have way stronger E.M.F. than the digitizer?
Else check for the Xperia Z Ultra, or for some tab without radio's so you don't have E.M.F's. at all!

Yes, much more stronger emf but only for a few seconds as i dont talk too much to the phone, and zero E.M.F will in Flight mode

Incorrect, at all times the EMF will be greater from the radios except when they are off.

From the radios sure, but the rest of the device will still be producing a particular harmonic frequency as do all electronic circuits.
If I may be honest I really think this is a fools errand as all devices will produce a certain amount of EMF and in most cases it will be greater than that of the digitiser. Turning flight mode on kills all radios but not all sources of EMF, for that you need to turn the device off, and if you turn the radio and the wifi/bt off there doesn't really appear to be much point in a device with a >5" screen.
Most EMF is harmless in smaller quantities, and there are regulations around how much EMF can be emitted from a device for FCC registration. Also when you turn your phones radio off you are still surrounded by the EMF it receives (850/900/1800/1900/2100MHz radio frequencies are all electromagnetic fields.) Here in Australia there have been cases where people have claimed the wireless spectrum from a tower has made them sick, only for it to be revealed that the tower wasn't even turned on when they made the claim.
Also not to be a damper but you cannot really believe everything you read on the internet regarding things making people sick, there are people who will claim that anything is bad for you if you look hard enough The question really is has a wacom digitiser made you feel sick. If not then don't worry about it. Worrying about something potentially making you sick is more likely to do more harm to your health through stress than the thing you are concerned about
Meaby you are right. Meaby its not harmfull at all. But... meaby. After some years we know for sure. But i dont want to be a member of on of those future statistical resurches...
I would like to have the capability to turn it OFF.
Alternatives
I have had my eye on other brands, not for the EMF reason although if that is your worry use hands free and leave the device in your bag, it's more the knox nonsense + the up & coming Tizen terror Samsung has/will inflict on their consumers.
I like the specs of the LG G2 pro & the one plus one but will have to get my 'hands on' before putting down the Note 3 as I have had the note from version 1 & the digitizer is a boon, pressure sensitivity is not such a seller but the writing & precision is, I have found alternative stylus type implements but again it will be trial & error.

hope my input helps.

Thanks for your reply.
I dont suggest you to do it. I see the screen of G2 and although is good is not compared with the superb AMOLED screen of Note 3. Those unbelievable colors and that deep black is unparalleled to any screen i have ever seen. That is the reason that i want to get the note 3.
I of course use handsfree or bluetooth all the time and the phone is in my bug and away from me. But it is impossible to play some games or see some pictures or anything else fun while the phone is in it's bug. It must be in my hands. And as we talk for inductive charging here for the charging of the stylus the emf will be strong. That is why i want to disable entirely the wacom digitizer, and if this is not possible, at least to know for sure that if the stylus is in its place the emf of wacom digitizer is gone completely.
Or get the Galaxy S5.
Or are there some things you want, that i forgot?
Pretty sure just walking outside provides more radiation and health risks than the E.M.F of any cell phone can ever produce.
Pretty much everything you can do in life poses a higher risk than a cell phone.

Any Motorcyclists in here? How's it working out with our leather gloves?

I rigged my Note 3 so it sits above my speedometer on my bike. I use it for GPS/Speedometer and mostly for tunes and texting via helmet speakers/mic.
The Note 3 has that "high sensitivity" screen mode for gloves. It works 95% as well as normal mode + bare fingers.
How's the Pure working out for you? Can you control the screen without any issues while wearing typical sportbike/cruising gloves?
Nobody in my town has the device in stock, so I can't check it out first hand.

It works ok with a flat fingertip through my gloves. Mine aren't particularly thick as they are summertime gloves. I would guess if the leather was a little thicker you would have a hard time.

I dont have mine mounted so i have to pull it out of my pocket. so only tried it a few times for changing songs and pausing but it has worked the times ive tried it.
if you have thicker gloves, pick up some silver thread and sew some some loops in - works perfect
I had the Note 4 and S5 and ran the screen sensitivity up and it worked ok. I am running my Moto X Pure (on my 1200GSA) and use Nanotips and love it. If you have black gloves I recommended it. Don't use too much, just the very tips where you touch the glove to the screen and it will last forever. I commute daily and am still on my first application since February.
BTW, I am LOVING this screen while riding in the California sun!!!

I had a Note 4 for awhile also.
How would you compare the Note 4's screen vs. the Pure screen out under the California sun?

I think the whites and colors are more true and find it easier to view on the bike n direct sun.
Here are the side by sides

Okay, got the Pure yesterday.
I've got these "racer style" gloves:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00W8W7D2G?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage
Cannot control the Pure screen AT ALL with these gloves.
But the Note 3's high-sensitivity mode does let me control the screen fairly well with the gloves. Not perfectly... I do have to press the screen a certain way with the glove fingertip. But once I've done that, it works great.
So I definitely will be doing something to my various gloves to add conductivity to the fingertips.
As for out in the sun, the Pure is just as easy to read in daylight as the Note 3 when looking directly at the screen (no angles). Neither one is noticeably better than the other (in my limited testing so far). The Samsung does have auto-brightness turned on for that extra oomph of brightness in the sun.
But when looking at the phones from an angle, the Pure is surprisingly MUCH easier to read. :good:
What about in the rain
Moto X Pure is supposed to be water repellent, however it failed the Rain + Commute test today. 30 mins was too much and now the touch screen will not work :crying:
Surprising because it passed the shower test and the washing it with soap and running water test while I was still in my 30 day return period. I guess the direct long exposure to the rain was too much.
JUST FYI. Sorry to hijack the thread
Ugh, that sucks Man, I'm sorry to hear that.
I hope you try the rice bag trick and it works somehow for your display.
