Moto X Style (Pure) 2015 Audio Quality - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anybody have anything to offer regarding the audio (headphone output) of the 2015 Moto X Pure Edition (Style)?
I cannot find any detailed reviews or comparisons.
It seems that audio is handled by the Snapdragon 808, but I can't find concrete details of this area of this phone.
I ordered a MXPE seeking better quality audio than the Kyocera Hydro Wave (I know, I know...), but now I'm reading that some other phones have better audio quality using dedicated DACs from audiophile-name companies.
TIA...

I can tell you this, vs. the Samsung Galaxy S6 I owned for 4 months the Moto X Pure 2015 is much better.
Exact same songs and player used on both. The output is louder also when I am sending via bluetooth in my car.
The sound overall seems richer with the exact same settings. This is based on Bose QC headset, streaming wirlessly to a Klipsh speaker, or streaming in my car.

Sound on this phone is awesome!

I turned the moto audio enhancing off. My opinion is that the mids are really punchy. The lows mids are there but can get lost depending on type of music.
Highs seem to be the worst. Cymbals can be overpowering. Heavier music suffers most from this. It's probably a combination of how the phone handles loud music (mastered loud).
Overall I like the speakers and the audio experience that 'my phone' gives me. I came from Oneplus One, Note 4, Original Moto X.
Moto phones have the loudest speakers I have experienced in a phone.

How did you turn of the Moto Audio?

Sounds pretty good. I'm not much into reviewing and A/B'ing and using descriptive words, but to my ears they sound pretty good. Though normally I'll be using mine with an AMP/DAC and mine in particular is the FiiO E18.
I just did a quick 5 minute A/B for you even though 5 minutes will not reveal true differences well enough. I placed my Moto Pure up against my Note 2 (I'm not sure if the T-Mo Note 2 had the Wolfson chip as did the international or not) using Poweramp and defeated the EQ on both phones.
They both are loud and handle my Philips Fidelio X2's well, which are easy to drive cans. I left the FiiO out of the loop. TO ME, both phones had decent bass reproduction and trebles sounded clear but the Moto did SEEM to sound more airy. There seemed to be a bit of a "veil" over the sound of the Note 2, but to my surprise, I preferred it. Mind you, this difference is not large at all and again, 5 minutes isn't enough time to compare, but it is what it is.
So, if I were to use one purely for the headphone only output, I'd probably reach for my Note 2, but I would have ZERO issue getting great sound out of the Moto. Listening output is very subjective. What sounds good to me may not sound as well to you. Also, our minds need proper adjustment to the different sounds so as time rolled on I might just prefer the Moto Pure. And as always, YMMV.
ETA: Forgot to mention this was using a flac file and not just an MP3.

What about audio quality through the earpiece during a call?
Is it loud, clear? Can it be set too loud? Many smartphones ear piece audio is poor, especially in loud environments.

It's an option in the sound and notification setting. It opens up the eq section.

I can barely remember having only radio until we got our first B&W TV in 1953. It was a huge deal going from a party line to our very own telephone line around 1955. I watched Sputnik going over at age 7, along with every other person in my town (many thousands). My first device was a **** Tracy wristwatch, circa 1959. So I'd have to say the audio quality of my Moto XPE is pretty darned good!

The OPO sounds like a blown speaker. The Moto X PE has FANTASTIC speakers. Better than I thought possible, this is the GOLDEN standard.

Chiming in on my original question, now that I have the phone.
Headphone audio is MUCH better quality than the Kyocera Hydro Wave. (As might be expected.) MUCH more clean power, better clarity, less distortion.
I did not do any kind of exhaustive AxB or technical analysis, just a subjective listen.
If anyone has further info, especially technical/test data or controlled (blind AxB listening tests, etc.), this would also be cool to see. But I'm very happy with it.
Thanks...

Compared to the HTC One M8, how does the quality of speakers and headphones? I'm thinking about replacing my HTC and I really like the new Motorola.

From what I remember from my m8, which I haven't used for 7 months, it sounds just about the same. I do think the volume on my moto x sounds louder. I almost never have anything playing full volume through the speakers due to that. Haven't had any distortions either.
Haven't tested the headphone jack other than in my car once because my bluetooth got a little messed up. Definitely sounded better than my note 4 on both aux and bluetooth.

Compared to the Nexus 6, sound through headphones is much richer. I also disable the EQ.

Note that to get the best sound quality, the Audio Effects must be completely turned OFF (disabled completely), not just set to "normal EQ" or "EQ off" or whatever with Audio Effects still on (enabled).
I have to wonder what sort of wooden-ears Motorola manager approved releasing this phone with Audio Effects enabled by default. It significantly degrades audio quality.

Audio quality over BT?

Hello!
I am reading more and more bad reports about the audio quality and loudness over BT, if you tried it (car specially) is it really bad and not loud enough?
The only thing I like in my One is the sound quality even on BT of my car (though it has aptx)
as far as i know, the g2 has aptx. ive used it for my bluetooth (through aux) and its the same loudness as my htc one. cant say there is a difference.
I can say coming from from an iPhone 5 to the G2 there is a little bit of audio quality difference. I wasn't sure if it was just me paying attention closer since its my first full time android phone.
The highs tones are very high and the rest of the sound is kind of neutral compared to the iPhone 5. In sound its like listening to a 128kbps song versus a 256kbps. If you listen closely enough you can hear a tiny bit of distortion/noise but I think if the equalizer was able to be adjusted that would not be noticeable.
Seems the same as my GNex. No complaints or concerns.

same for me coming from a gnex. sounds the same to me. if anything the bass seems stronger than gnex. i'm using jaybirds bluebuds x earphones though, not plugged in through aux in car.
I will try mine on the way home from work today. My Lg spectrum 2 Bluetooth audio sucked compared to my DNA, so hopefully there not the same
One of my favorite attributes of the g2 is that on my Jay bird bluetooth headphones, the sound quality blows away my ip5

Earphone sound output/quality discussion

So there's a lot of discussion going around about the device, minus the sound output. Can the users (if there are any audiophiles out there) please share your reviews about the music quality output from the device. This is purely with earphones plugged in and not the boomsound speakers. How is the bass, treble, mids, highs, etc. How is the earphones quality that is provided with the m8.
The z2 seems to be getting mixed reviews, hence i am eager to know about the m8. I know gsmarena has posted a review but i wanted more inputs from actual users. Will appreciate any inputs.Thanks.
The M8 reviews all say good things about the headphone output. Personally I think it's fantastic, highs, lows and mids are all very clear and well balanced. The M8 drives a lot higher voltage output compared to the M7 too, I read someone who measured it.

I can confirm that the output quality is amazing. Partly due to there being a 2.5v amplifier next to the headphone jack, is this correct regarding the amplifier?
i don't miss beats much as the m8 has sound just like it and due to hardware not an equalizer
Yea the m8 has an amplifier for both headphone jack and loud speakers

I, too, can confirm that the sound output quality on headphones and speaker are phenomenal on this device - even without any sound mods flashed.
Tested the HTC in ear buds and as well as a sennheiser headset and a pair of pro Beyerdynamic headphones. All sounded absolutely clear and nice, even on Google Play Music All Access streaming.
So far, I am VERY pleased with audio quality on this baby.
i purchased and use regularly a set of jaybirds bluebuds (wirless stereo ear bud type headset) when at work. i havent used these since getting my htc m8 (used them with my htc one x) only just paired them. reading this thread i decided to try the included wired headset that are usually rubbish. long story short, they are incredible. i can honestly say that they sound like im in my lounge room listening to my harmon kardon amp and denon dvd player with the bass of my 15 inch sub. they sound that good. just a shame about the wire.
wow so many good reviews... htc seemed to have nailed the sound department with this phone...
Perfect speakers, useing earphones is very good the loudest output I've heard.

Does anyone have a slight hissing sound when playing music on low I can hear it. Or after music is done playing its there.
Also, if I'm playing music and I turn the volume off I can hear hissing through the loud speakers
I have a small dead pixel, and I didn't want to return it just for that.

I use a Pair of Logitech ue900 (399bucks on Logitech), with Quad Drivers (and those are pretty sensible on bad outputs, or too high output impedance).
I hear absolutely nothing which lets me wich for a better quality. You will probably have to buy in-ears/headphones for around 700-1500 bucks so you might complain.
I read on head-fi.org, that viper4android is just an Equalizer which mostly raises the amount of bass (NOT the quality of bass), and most people think "more bass = better soundquality". So tonality gets changed. A bit like when you activate "Boomsound" on the settings with headphones plugged in. This raises bass, treble, and the volume level, and in direct comparison (mostly with bad/cheap headphones) it might sound better.
But its not, the soundquality gets worse with that.
I personally use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39672554
But i cant tell you, if it really improves the audio quality. I only tried a half song with my ue 900, and i didnt really heared a difference. Maybe because the difference is too small, or that you HAVE to have a 2nd device to compare both at the same time, to hear any difference.
i also didnt heared any hiss or any distortions.
But i think.... Alot people are not turning "BoomSound" OFF, so the Treble is way too much, and this can be that hiss, people are complaining about.

+1 its similar to the beats on the one x... it just increases the loudness... of course the bass itself is not that bad but are you saying that boomsound is amplifying the sound similar to beats??
I only had "Beats Audio" via Mod on my desire HD like almost 2 years ago. So i cannot give you an exact comparison. But yes, it should be pretty similar.
At least, on my headphones (Beyerdynamic T90 / UE 900) with boomsound activated, it was un-listenable, because of TOO heavy treble (due to boomsound). Without the treble changes on that setting, it might even be nice, to make the sound on neutral headphoens more fun when needed.
I haven't tried the earphones that come with the device ('cause I already had a pair I use and I've never used a pair of packed-in earphones in the past), but the audio quality through my Sony earphones are fantastic. I switched BoomSound on and off and it does make it noticeably better if you're comparing them "side-by-side" like that, and despite what others say, I didn't notice it raising bass all that much. It felt like the audio got a bit less tinny and...hollow, and sounded like it was more surrounding my head, instead of sounding like it was coming from the sides and slightly farther away. A very...untechnical explanation, but that's the way I heard it.
Some extra tinkering in PowerAmp and having moved from an iPhone 5 to this baby, the pure giddy bliss I dive into every time I listen to music with this device is unimaginable.
Earphone sound quality-wise, you can't get much better than this.

Totally agree...i use Gear circle and Gear level U wireless buds and the sound is amazing and so much louder with my note 5 compared to my Note Edge...love it
Any idea if the boosted headphone sound works for bluetooth enabled headphones like the JayBird X2?
what about the call quality? In ear speaker loudness, loudness over speakerphone etc. I don't understand why these things are always almost not mentioned in any reviews, it is a phone first of all, right?
I also noticed that the sound in my via Bluetooth is much louder and clearer. I'm very happy with it.

Yes just got my Note 5 yesterday also and did some testing between my iPhone 6 plus and LG G4 and the Note 5. The Note 5 is definitely the clear winner. Not sure if this helps you since I don't use BT, but with IEMs via the headphone jack I find the Note 5 to be warmer and fuller sounding with less emphasis on treble like the S6 Edge I have. Also, while I initially thought the "UHQ Upscaler" was going to be a gimmick, it adds a surprising amount of punch to the audio! Overall, I'm like a kid in a candy store with this thing. I should also mention I use several high-end pairs of IEMs (Sony XBA-A3, MDR-EX1000, Dunu DN-2000j, etc.).

Love the audio quality I am so happy. So happy.
The UHQ setting is actually enabling 192khz hardware output on the audio chip.

Hi there - I'm not an audiophile, but I do appreciate a good, quality output. I actually haven't used a dedicated player; the most I've done is got an E17 DAC/Amp for headphones, but it wasn't worth the trouble for me personally.
The DAC is anyone's guess, but it should be Wolfson (as were most, if not all the Samsungs before it with Exynos processors).
Cheers,

Audio through headphones surprisingly good

I'm not going to lie. Coming from an iPhone and a Galaxy S6 (my Moto G is sort of an interim phone while I sell those two to afford new stuff this fall), I expected the Moto G to sound considerably worse. And yeah, it's not quite as good. But it's certainly far from the worst I've had and I've only owned expensive devices in the past. The bass is punchy, the treble is fairly decent, and the volume levels aren't awful (although I may increase mixer_paths at some point to gain a couple levels). I've actually been listening through fairly decent earbuds for the past 40 minutes or so to various types of music (alternative, acoustic, heavy stuff, rap) and I could definitely live with this sound quality if I had to.
It is pretty damn amazing what ~$200 buys you today.
I've noticed this too! Big upgrade from my n4, no more distortion!
the earphones are 'good' for the price ... cant expect more at this price point
My ear is in a full moon party.
Yeah, this is awesome.
I'm using CM12.1 With a Dolby Atmis and Jet player.
After a hour to configure the player, my brain explode with the results.
Quality-wise, yes...very good. Volume-wise, I'd say it's extremely subpar. It's easily the lowest volume of any device I've ever had. Speaker volume is phenomenal...headphone volume is god awful!!! And I'm comparing this to my Nexus 4, just as the OP says.
You can mention the speaker which gives a quite punchy sound compared to many phones from this category which are mostly ear hurting with middle and high frequencies only...
If anyone's looking for a little boost without messing with viper, etc, I made a mixer_paths.xml mod here

I'm getting the same thing. The audio through my IEMs (Hifiman RE-400 for active/gym stuff and Yamaha EPH-100 for normal listening) is freakin' excellent, but the volume is indeed low.

The mod thread I linked above makes headphone volume LOUD!!! It can go a few notches higher, but I think it sounds great, personally...it also boosts speaker volume pretty much to its limit. It may get slightly distorted occasionally, but it's definitely a good bit louder, as well!
Motorola has done an excellent job. the sound is excellent. the happy moment. :highfive:
Walkman
You can install Walkman to get the best out of the earphones.

Speaker and headset (3.5mm Jack) - audio quality

Hello. I'd like to buy Moto G5+ but I read so many negative opinions about sound from speaker and headphones (Jack 3.5 mm). I'd like to know what do you think about speaker and headset in G5+. What's your opinion about audio quality, volume level, etc.?
It seems to be about the same as my S6 was. I have no complaints at all.
Dolby Atmos!
I think we must do something so that Lenovo owned Motorola must also give us Dolby Atmos in the next update!!
The speaker in my G5+ is pretty good, imo. Gets fairly loud, and generally remains clear even at high volume levels.
The headphone jack, however, is a little underpowered though. You have to turn up the volume to higher levels as compared to the G3, and even the E2. 3 volume up clicks above 0 was my staple, and now its 4, and sometimes 5. The audio quality is ok though.
I'm using black player and the sound quality is way better than default play music.play with 3rd party players u"ll get some excellent music experience.
Does the job well
I agree with all the answers in this tread: It gets fairly loud and clear. It's not the best but it gets the job well done. The quality of the 3.5mm headphone jack is also fair.
The audio quality depends on the type of hearing aids you use, usually I use some that mark the bass
For whatever reason, using Bluetooth audio (Moto Surround), I am getting an unusual distortion at higher volumes in contrast to my Moto X Pure Edition and my Droid Turbo. Turbo was spitting harsh treble on some songs but the MXPE held up fine in both regards. Interesting how even Bluetooth audio can vary.
Over 3.5mm though, it seems a bit "spacious" to me, like there is almost a slight reverb and a tiny muffle. Still more than listenable, it's something I can adjust to.

Never heard of Moto Surround. Things sound fine via Bluetooth via SoundCloud and also Poweramp (app). It respects the equalizer settings when using PowerAmp. For SoundCloud though i have no power over the sound signature but it is similar to what I had for the MXPE and MX2014. That said my reciever has APT X driver, but even when connected to one that doesn't it all sounds fairly standard. Little to no difference so I'm curious about your statement for sure.
For me headphone volume via 3.5 jack is loud (and you can use the preamp in Poweramp to give it a significant boost for your audio). Regardless, I'm fairly pleased with output and I have it at around 75% volume to listen to music in the New York City Subway.

aptX support is in full swing here too, this is why I share your confusion. But I do recommend the Surround, it's not advertised to have noise cancelling but it makes the harsh screeching the 6 train makes at 14th Street bearable when listening to music.

I wonder if Motorola has included a dsp to enhance the sound signature... that would explain the change in sound. I found the product on Amazon's site. Its pretty inexpensive now, I might just buy it just to test out your notion. lol.
Sound very satisfied

I've purchased the phone and the sound of speaker is loud , clear and higher than my previous sony z3
For the headphone I didn't try it but from the reviews, comments and it's build I think it's not good
But I'm using third party headphone called panasonic you will find it in this link :
amazon/ Panasonic-RP-HJE120-K-In-Ear
The best ever headphone I've used , better than my apple headphone and working charm ,loud and ultra bass on my moto G5 plus
Now I'm very satisfied with my moto

I agree. Comparing to my Moto X play the G5 Plus is much more bassy, too much like a bass boost option is on and it does sound a bit harsher. Yes it does sound a bit spacious too. The X play sounded just like a line out, as it should. There is something going on here with the G5 Plus.
