ive searched and searched but am having problems finsing steps to get cm12 onto my s5900 w8 (bell)
finding there is limited w8 support or its foud across so many forums and not mentioned if items work or not with others that do
curent fone
galaxy s5 900w8
android ver: 4.42
baseband g900w8vlu1anf3
kernel : old (2014)
build: kot49h.g900w8vlu1anf3
I want to have a fast light install with abilities to turn off all the google and samsng bloatware (if they even need to be installed at all)
bell modem
searching for all these has become confusing and i dont want to brick my phone
not really concerned about knox but it would be kool to keep it 0x0
battery life
everything should be working (gps camera etc)
i have two old galaxy s and xda has been amazing, but not having a dev phone anymore, i cant afford to be down, phones have advanced beyond my abilities and i need to get it right
pointing me to threads/posts should be sufficient as im proficient in figuring, just hard to find w8 stuff
thanks in advance!!

Hello, and thank you for using XDA Assist!
I am connecting you to the S5 Q&A, where your device experts can be found:
> Samsung Galaxy S 5 > Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting
From what I read, I see enough reason not to go with a custom ROM (Knox would get triggered the moment you install custom recovery IIRC - if not sooner) when you can just root and freeze the bloat.
Concerns about stability and battery life are valid concerns as well. My experience with custom ROMs is that it is hard to get that (yet I still keep coming back ).
Your modem should stay intact during a custom ROM flash though, but there have been cases otherwise I suppose.
Anyway, hope this helps, and good luck!

great,
thanks for the quick reply...
but the first heading i see is root[ALL VARIENTS]... but within the first post it says "MAKE SURE ONLY 'F'"
and for freezing, titianium backup?
i'll keep researching, but would really like to go back to one of the CM builds.
thanks again

Yeah, that's for recovery, and what is quoted is one of the options within ODIN. But for the recovery option, you will need a "ODIN flashable recovery for your device" which I did not see.
If you just want to go with the root and titanium backup for now (btw, "app quarantine" freezes apps too and may still be a free alternative), looks like, based on the thread, that towelroot is the way to go. Just to be sure to install SuperSU afterward if towelroot does not for you.
Hope this helps.
I'm on g900w8 Telus it uses the same towers as bell. I've used the cyanogen 12.1 version. Just make sure to grab the correct version of rom. And make sure you flash lollipop kernel and modem.
I believe u want the ktle version for gsm

Hi everyone, I need advice on restoring functionality to my i9505. I Odin flashed the NA1 stock leak because I thought it was required for echoe v16 rom which seemed to work but I had no wifi so I flashed the wifi fix from the i9505 stock rom thread for the 4.4.2 stock rom but it broke the sound and I still have no wifi now I gave a buggy stock rom with no wifi no phone no messaging amongst other issues and my Knox flag is 0x1. I have tried Odin flashing all sorts of bootloader modems etc but they either don't fix anything or they have an error while trying to flash saying FAIL! (Auth) in Odin and device says SW REV. CHECK FAIL : fused : 4 , binary 3. If anyone can please help me with a solution I would be very greatfull. I have Googled and looked through a lot of threads but still haven't found an answer. I know I've made a stupid mistake, just need help now.
1. Stop of flash things without read before. Flashing old bootloaders is horrible idea. This will create a paperweight soon.
2. The unique solution u can do is:
- Flash I9505XXUFNB9 (NEE) Nordic Countries-> HERE or HERE by Odin :fingers-crossed:
thanks Joku1981, im downloading now, it was a stupid mistake, I have been flashing and modding phones for about 10 years since flashing monster packs on a Motorola E398, I don't generally make these mistakes, I did a lot of reading before attempting this and it looked like others were having success but I just misunderstood the process. I am in Australia, not sure if that matters, is there any specific process to flashing this? will there be any steps to follow flashing with oden?

Im flashing for about 10 years too. But the Samsung bootloaders are one new big **** for all the people that love modify their phones
I know, its really disappointing, they should understand the potential of letting developers have access to the devices software by now, there are developers out there making way better stuff than the OEMs are. its almost starting to go backwards, you never used to have so much access as you have with the open source Android OS but now companys are clamping down on more and more of the device specific code etc.

Samsung devices now: If you was lucky and you received one Samsung with android 4.2.2, DONT UPDATE IT PLS
I flashed the file successfully, but I still have no sound and no wifi, things like phone and messaging are still buggy, any other sugestions?
yes my original bootloader was pre KNOX, I know, I have already ruined it now, no going back, almost enough to put me off modding all together, think im going to be up for a new phone by the look of it.
also my android version still says 4.4.2 and baseband still I9505XXUFNA1

thank you to both of you guys, you have restored my phone, I am so greatful for your help and generosity I have thanked you both and I will make a small contribution for your efforts, please advise Repulsa if there is some way I can make you a small donation for your help. one more thing, I am confused now as to which roms will now be compatible with my phone, will it be safe to flash Echoe v16 now? and what roms will I have to stay away from? thank you both again so much for your help.
OK so I'm coming from the galaxy note 1 which I had no problems with due to the unlocked bootloader I presume and. I've been trying to figure out things on my own but I'm having trouble finding reliable information on some things and some other stuff I just don't know how to research even 1/10th as fast as asking about here. Any help or links to info are greatly appreciated. So I grabbed sm-n900v and not sure what may have changed since rooting installing SS and flashing alliance rom but rest of current info is kit Kat 4.4.2, N900VVRUCNC4, kernel version 3.4.0, hardware version N900v.07. Now the phone is unlocked and I'm using it on AT&T, I've got it all working with only couple issues. First I can't get any roms except alliance rom to work which is apparently related to kernel, baseband, firmware, or god knows. Then I've read some threads discussing either unified firmware or a leaked firmware being ideal and some stuff about certain modems/bootloaders/radios/firmwares/recoveries being better between NC2 and NC4 and even combinations working best I've followed some guides to just installing other roms but they don't work for me and have resulted in soft bricking so now I just need an full answer all in one instead of trying to figure it out from so many different sources. What modem/radio/bootloader/recovery/firmware/kernel should I be using to try out some roms keeping in mind I'm with ATT. Also should I be looking at ATT roms I assumed not to but figured worth asking. Also any other recommendations would be great I'm really just wanting a slim, stable, fast experience thanks for any help again.

Some use Verizon roms on att and t Mobil for roms on NC4 you need to Odin NC2 try looking up some instructions it helps. Safe strap is what you can use for recovery have busy box it's needed for it to work. Modems is for your signal I wouldn't bother. Firmwares are for ppl wanting to go back to stock mostly ect. But I'm sure the step you skipped was getting NC2 on there. Be careful before you do anything make sure your 100 percent sure or you can't have a bad day.
Sent from my SM-N910V using XDA Free mobile app
Last week I received a brand new S5 G900F, no carrier, and want to have administrator privileges in order to remove bloatware. Plus, it would be nice to have adblock and apps to back up the entire system, both which aren't available in the phone's stock form, and maybe a custom ROM and Kernel.
I have never rooted a phone nor messed with its system files, so I'm a complete newbie on this. Also, I haven't connected it to the Internet yet, so that the phone is in its stock form before rooting it.
What's the simplest, safest yet effective method for rooting my phone? Afterwards, can I just update the phone to the latest version using the regular system settings menu, or should I do it externally (downloading the update on the PC)? Any particular tips on what to do next, such as what apps to remove, which to install and so on, if possible while keeping it simple? I read that CM 12.1 (ROM) + Ktoonsez (Kernel) is the way to go.
Thanks in advance.
Hi Avensvvvvvv
The best, safeest way to Root? - Have a look in the Q&A Forum, its mostly all here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2700073
Some people use TowelRoot...
I used CF Auto root and found it easier. You can find here at XDA or at http://droidors.com/2015/03/24/root-samsung-galaxy-s5-sm-g900i-android-lollipop-5-0/ be aware that this link is for the g900i ot the g900f.
As for updating etc....a lot of the latest ROMS come with OTA (over the air) updates. Which ROMS? There is kind of a rule here that you dont ask which ROM is best because the idea is that you do loads of reading and try them out for yourself Lately Ive been playing around with PhoeniX ROM, Alliance ROM and some of the CM stuff...but all are good. Removal of Bloatware is pretty straight forward using Titanium Backup - or some ROMS supply their own method for doing do. Just be sure to not mess around with any of the system files while your still learning. Search Bloatware and you should find some good advice.
Thats about it mate - the main thing is to read, read, read and ask lots of questions before you do anything. Otherwise you'll have a very expensive paperweight on your desk Most of the people here are cool with Noobs asking questions in the correct forums....by the way this post should really be posted in the Q&A forum
Good luck flashing and rooting...and most of all....have fun!
Mugsyfied
You have a good answer in the above post.....
But in future, you need to give us more information about your device so that we can offer advice that is suited more exactly to your circumstances....
The version of Android currently running on your device is one critical bit of info you didn't provide.....
Some things to bear in mind about your phone....
1) Samsung have included something called Knox on these phones....it is basically an un-resettable 'eFuse' which 'tripps' when you flash any custom software to your device. Samsung are using it as an indicator to allow them to deny warranty claims.
2) when you root your phone you WILL trip knox, this will probably prevent you from receiving OTA updates to your device....and even if (by some miracle) you did get an OTA, it will remove your root access, and you'll have to start again....

Hi Guys,
semi-noob here. I have a galaxy s4 (sprint) model sph-l720 that I have activated on Boost Mobile carrier. I got it used and it works fine. I was very unhappy with battery life. I saw a way to convert s4 to s5 by flashing customer rom and thereby getting the ultra power saving mode. I followed the guide but since I'm new I can't post the URL the ROM is echoe rom v29 s5 port part v
kernal 3.4.101-v5.1
I could not root it using there method and even though twrp installed it would not initialize. I found an autoroot file that I installed with ODIN and it worked, phone was rooted. then I installed ROM manager from the play store and installed CM Recovery. that worked. then I installed the echoe ROM from that page. it all worked but now some things are not working. getting xposed not activated messages, mobile data shows a connection but I can't access the network. some other things now wokring either. it also changed my model number to GT-I9505, which I thought was weird...should I be concerned about that? . also it's android 4.4.2 and it might be better to have 5? . So, after all that, my question is to recommend a ROM that is newer but still have the power saving mode, that hopefully fixes the things that are not working. my main concern is battery life and performance. I don't care about things like themes. I hope that makes sense and I appreciate any help. Thanks
Yeah you got a long way to go.
You cannot and should not flash roms from other devices to your device. Unless it's stated that it will also work on your device. You also should not follow guides on those wannabe tech blogs unless it on XDA. If the guide is a Youtube video, then skip it. All those guides suck and are usually incomplete or outdated. For example you flashed a v29 version. When I look on the website of echoerom their latest version is v58.... And besides that there isn't even an sph-l720 version available.
Bottomline:
You flashed an outdated recovery, you flashed an highly outdated rom that's for the I9505 and not for your phone. No worries, you didn't brake anything.
This is the section for your phone.

1. Use TWRP instead of CWM. CWM is outdated and should not be used for our phone anymore.
Hi guys, Newbie to forum and rooting here! I own a Galaxy S4 i9505 android version 4.3 and want it to upgrade to a higher, better and stable version. I've been doing a lot of research and found that the latest 6.0.1 gives issues with wifi on s4! I always wanted to root my phone but never did but since pokemon go doesn't run on 4.3 I'm glad that I'm forced to root it ! So, which is the best ROM and android version that I should upgrade my phone to that'll not show any bugs or issues! I don't care if the android version's not latest..I own only one phone! Just want to run pokemon go and exploit some features that rooting will provide! Thanks for help~
There aren't any ROMs that are 100% bug free. Even Samsung ROMs have bugs.
Also, the matter of "which ROM is better" is subjective.

Hey thanks for the reply! I'm aware that no ROM maybe 100% bug free but maybe there are some which have insignificant bugs?? and also perhaps the older ROMs..say the ones with android 5.0.x maybe so because of more updates? In that regard, I would really like if you would recommend one such ROM to your knowledge! Thanks!

Me, ive come from many years of custom ROMs on my S2, and due to all the issues with CM13 which was the last ROM i ran on it, i retired the S2 the other day and got a cheap second hand S4, and i have to say after all the drama of custom CM13 on the S2, i am actually enjoying the stock 5.01 LP ROM on the S4. All ive done is run CF Auto Root and then run this debloat app on it Until i do enough research on what a good custom ROM to install, im just going to stick with the stock 5.0.1...
Stock 5.01 is available here at sammobile
It should be enough of an upgrade over 4.3, plus you should probably flash this at least once before going to a custom ROM anyways...for reasons i wont bore you with
You can try this first up as an alternate to sammobile.com (because they limit your speed):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/tool-samfirm-samsung-firmware-t2988647
This backdoors a fast download from Sammobile...much faster
I just got it to finally work to download my ROM!
Or if you try the main sammobile.com website
If you choose to go this route, pick your country, and if you want an unbranded, no carrier bloat version, pick the one form your country with no carrier name after it in brackets, i.e. pick the one with just the 3 letter region code in brackets after it. Note: its about 1.4Gb to download, and unlike the old days sammobile will make it fricking painful to get without paying them...they throttle the download. Im on my 8th go trying to get my ROM, every time it fails you have to restart, so they soak up your data allowance the bastards, but theres nowhere else i know of to get my ROM
Or another alternate:
http://fw.updato.com/
Ok so I've decided to flash this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...om-untouched-google-play-edition-5-1-t3198177
But I'm getting confused between the meanings of rooting and flashing ROM. Do I need to "root" my phone (I would use Super SU) before flashing it? Because I'm following this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDlV3plfnVA
and his recovery screen looks different than mine. Apparently, he's using clockworkMod CWM but how do I do that? So, if I root my phone first then will my recover screen look similar to his? It's confusing! Please help!
Like i said id flash a stock ROM first before going custom....GPE still counts as a custom ROM
Be sure to read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67514801&postcount=1380 and more than just the front page of any ROM, this one has a few issues, i assume fixed.....
As for recovery, you should forget about Phliz (it can have issues with newer ROM's) and use TWRP instead (i used to hate TWRP, but CWM based recoveries seemingly arent being updated to fix issues lately)
I did a quick post about installing it (and fixing a potential niggle) here earlier: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67769031&postcount=6
