Janky scrolling - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got my phone on Friday and got it all set up. Noticed on Saturday that my scrolling is stuttering; animations seem to be laggy, and overall the phone feels slightly sluggish.
Any ideas? My Nexus 6 is buttery smooth and that's what I was expecting with this phone too.

My experience in just two days of use is similar. Not nearly as smooth as my N6. Scrolling in Chrome is where I see the most..... jankyness

Just a basic trick is animations under dev option
Speed it up or turn off. Cause I have none of these issues. Are you rooted and using kernel apps. Maybe something you changed. I used kernel auditor and tried powersave but really bogged so went to on demand. No problems underclocked a couple of steps on cpu too.

Nope not rooted. Speeding up animations won't fix the stuttering, especially when scrolling. The phone feels like it's running in battery saving mode all the time. Same apps I have loaded on my Nexus 6.

CPU Spy only sees a max frequency of 1440 for me. Maybe there's an incompatibility issue with the app as I swore this phone was 1.8ghz

Op stated animations laggy. First I have heard of these issues. A lot of users are waiting for phone still. Plus development is gonna start rolling out this week. Can only get better. Hopefully. Lol

Is that only the "little" cores.
Edited. 4 Little cores max out at 1440. 2 Big are 1824.

I removed it and rebooted but the lag still exists. I'll try a hard reset and see if that fixes it

Scrolling performance for me has been noticeably worse than my ancient Galaxy S3, especially with Chrome, with only a small set of apps installed. No SD card is installed at this time. I'm chalking it up to having no ad blocking yet and the shear number of pixels being pushed but it's still a bummer.

I'm still on the fence, more concerned about my audio issues, but you're absolutely right.. I was expecting a nice upgrade, not a marginally worse Android experience on a larger display.

Oh lolly how much do we love you.. Pure lolly.. But i do love you and hope marshy is better

I got mine in today. I'm super disappointed.. Everything lags..

[Q] Why doesn't my N7 feel as fast and snappy on 4.2.1???????

Hi all I just purchased a new N7 16gb I updated it to 4.2.1 prior to making the purchase I did my research on here other forums including YouTube. And I'm not to happy with the outcome as far as the speed of the N7 others that I've seen out there as I mentioned seem faster and the videos I watched were stock N7`s running 4.2.1 I even did a quadrant test and scored a 3616 or so. I do understand that is a rough estimate but I was expecting a higher avg then that for a quad core T3. Any help or insight is appreciated

root it, install a custom kernel that allows for increased performance and faster cpu speeds(and other tweaks). if youre looking for increased performance out of the stock kernel, you wont find it. also, even with stock(rooted) you need to bench correctly. you want to set your cpu speeds as the highest speed for hi and low speed. that way it doesnt scale cpu speeds(if you let it scale, youre actually testing a lower speed since quadrant doesnt max out the nexus 7). disabling fsync also helps immensely.

take a little time, read around here. theres lots and lots of info. the process is actually very easy. it does appear intimidating at first, but the intimidation is all in the terminology. once you pick what everything means, itll be less intimidating. and once you go through the process the first time, youll be kicking yourself when you realize how easy it actually is. and dont fall into the root toolkit path. ot might appear easy, bit you will be worse off in the longer run. especially when itll come to upkeep or fixing issues. root toolkits prevent you from learning the right process, which could have harmful affects when it is time for maintenance.

The answer to your question is actually pretty simple. Just open the Google current app, go to menu (the 3 dots on the top right corner), go to Settings and untick the enable background sync, finally reboot your n7. I found the solution and applied it myself. I now have absolutely nothing to complain about my tablet

Hi!
What do you in fact disable when disabling background sync? Is it email notification and such? Because then it is not worth it I think.
You're preventing Google Currents from downloading new articles and whatnot while it's not the active app. If you, like 99.99999% of the world, don't use Currents, there's no reason not to disable it.
I agree.

Is the overheating issue common or only on some phones

I set my screen off of auto and up to 90, i cant do dim displays, and every time i run antutu it shuts down. could it be this one device or is it all the g3's

I have very hot weather in the office (AC works bad). And after OTA update my phone was constantly rebooting like 2 min. after startup. I turned it off, waited 5 min to cool it down and then it worked fine...

wow, such a grown up and not childish reply.
I starting playing golfstar which works the phone pretty hard. At first I noticed how much better the frame rate was compared to my s4, after about 5mins the frame rate went to crap. I can only assume the phone was throttling due to heat. I never got any warnings though
I dont have this problem at all. Was running antutu benchmark two times in a row yesterday with 100% brightness without auto activated, AND charging, and it reached 36C. And its about 27C in this room.

ya i think im going to the s5 or the nexus 5, it keeps happening, so im done.
Are you only having a problem trying to do a benchmark at high brightness or are you having problems with regular use? I use Lux for autobrightness and it's bright enough for me and I have no issues with over heating.
Also, I wouldn't downgrade to the Nexus 5 if you're giving up on this phone. Not saying it's a bad phone, but it's comparatively a downgrade. A G2 would be a better downgrade than that or side grade to the S5 or M8 or whatever it is the HTC phone is called.

it was during the bench. But i did a battery pull and ran 3 straight benchmarks with no overheating issues. But then i did the no lag trick and tried again with it powering down
So the next best device is the m8 you say?

I'd first suggest you just use the phone and not worry about the benchmarks. Benchmarks are meant to push the system so that could be why you're having problems. With daily use, even with the screen as bright as you have it, you may not notice any other issue. Give it a chance first.
And from reviews I've read, it does sound like the M8 is the next best. I almost considered it, but it's about the same size as the G3 with a smaller screen. Fortunately, I'm loving my G3.

Mine's never dimmed but it gets warm enough such that it starts throttling back to ~1.6 GHz. Definitely not hot though.

The no lag trick, is no real trick, it turns off stuff to keep your device save from overheating, so, that's why it turned off afterwards.
I've kept the stock setting and never had any shutdowns or noticed any performance problems at games or dim, it gets warm sometimes at long gaming, but that's it.

If you are returning a phone because it will shut down during a benchmark, then why did you get the phone in the first place?

You are not alone. Mine can get very hot when playing games (especially when charging), and I have to stop game to cool it down.
The situation gets worse when dual layer case installed. I have to remove the case to cool the phone down.

I am sure mine does "thermal throttling".
When the phone gets hot, Quadrant goes down to 12,xxx.
When the phone cools down, Quadrant goes back to normal (23,xxx).

sorry, your question does not make sense.
I bought the phone because it had nice specs. i returned the phone because it was apparently defective. My new LG G3 has not overheated to shut down. got a little hot but not bad
I'm still wondering how are NOW the LG G3 are this moment? do they still have overheated issue?
How is the camera in 4k recording? is that fixed?

A bit low if you ask me. If you can get a replacement, I would replace it. I don't have lag issues even on many apps and games. Sense UI smoothness is superb and even Chrome is smooth unless the websites are loading while scrolling, but even then it's still far smoother than any non-HTC one phone I've used.
Your getting throttled my friend, take phone off charger for a few minutes, let the phone idle then retry, that score is definitely throttled

What's the deal & issue with pointless benchmarks.
You all get in such a twist over them.
I had my note 4 first ever test (out of curiosity) scored in the 20,000 range can't remember specifics, immediately after it was 52 ish thousand, now that's a big difference, same conditions for both tests.
This is why I see them as utterly pointless and give no accurate readings what so ever.

Them being pointless is just your opinion, but nobody here claimed the readings are accurate.. They just give us an approximate indication as in comparison against other phones/roms/kernels.

So because YOU had one bad instance of a HUGE difference, suddenly EVERY benchmark is bad and useless and we should just ditch them all?!

It's not just a one off, this happened repeatedly over many devices, that is why I now just ignore them.
Sorry if my posts offends your strong stance that's not my intention, nor is it to rile a reaction.
Perhaps my statements are direct and my sincere apologies.
But it is yes just of my opinion that I won't even use them as a guide because of such in accurate results over as stated many devices.

Benchmark scores

I'm just curious if anyone has performed benchmarks recently? I never bothered, but was curious if my phone had slowed down at all in the 15 months I've used it without any wipes. It feels just as fast to me but sometimes things can slowly degrade and not be noticeable to us.
Anyways my benchmark scores basically all came out much higher than the scores reported for the OnePlus 5 when it was new. So I'm assuming maybe updates have done something to improve that? My phone is 100% stock and never even rooted.

Benchmarks aren't representative cause manufacturers can cheat like op did. If your real life performance decreases, a wipe of caches can be help in the first time otherwise a factory reset.
As I said I haven't noticed a performance drop but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't notice a big improvement if I wiped everything tomorrow and started fresh (which I don't want to because obviously it's a big hassle. Also I'm not sure that I am on the "OnePlus cheated" bandwagon if the device was running maxed out for games also (not just bench marks) than I can't personally see how it's cheating. But lots of people will disagree on that.
What I'm trying to see is if other phones are also scoring over 200k on AnTuTu on the latest software because that would make it seem like my phone is in line with others. If they're getting 220k on a fresh install than maybe my phone could benefit from a full wipe. Does that not at least make some sense?
I never ran a benchmark on it before but I'm getting 203k now and when it first came out others were getting 170k according to my Google search.

So yours scored almost the same just slightly higher than mine did. Can you tell me what you're running and how long since it was installed? I'm guessing now they're going to be pretty close together and probably all getting higher scores than when new for whatever reason but I'm still curious.

Microstuttering/lag

I'm experiencing stutters/hiccups on animations when going from an app to the recents menu on the animation, it also starts to stutter on the ripple effect on the fingerprint when the screen is completely off and on a lot of the animations that come with the device is anyone experiencing this or is the problem related to just my phone ???

Drop the animation from 1x to .5x in developer options i find it pretty much eliminates any jitter or lag , also clearing cache in recovery can help

That doesn't really fix the issue it just hides it I really want the animations at the same speed but smoother do you have the same problem at 1x speed ?

This phone hasn't stuttered once since I've gotten it. You have some rogue app or issue obviously causing this.
First thing I've done since my first Android is enable dev options THEN set ALL animations to 0. Makes things lightning fast. I don't get animations whether on a PC, Mac or phone. You are intentionally slowing down your interface! When you click on something you expect an INSTANT reaction, right? Try it once, you may like it!
And yes I have a S10e and S10+ 1TB and both are the fastest Android devices yet as far as response goes. That includes prior devices that were rooted and/or run custom roms so that it definitely saying something.

I mean sure you may prefer no animations but i kinda prefer having them and also no the lag/stutter does not affect the response the app still opens at the same speed just the animation lagging and i expect a buttery smooth experience on a phone worth 1k$.

Is it an Exynos rooted model or Snapdragon non-rooted? There was lag when I used dual sim and micro SD patch on my rooted Note9 that only one dev was able to fix(Dr.Ketan)

Non-rooted exynos version almost brand new got it 4 weeks ago
Hmm, not sure then what could be causing it. I have 128GB Exynos and it seems faster than my Note9 Exynos and S10+ Snapdragon to me in app/UI response times. I'd try removing microSD card to see if that makes difference, if not then factory reset would be worth a try.

I tried factory resitting nothing works I've seen this issue being reported on reddit as well people said it started after March security patch.
I have some microstutterings and lags here and there too in my S10+ Exynos 128 GB/8 GB Variant. Tried reboot, clearing cache from recovery and all sort of things but it has slight lags/stutters here and there, mostly during opening of app drawer and switching quickly between apps using double tap of recent key.

No that never helps
On fast phones you should never use this option unless you like ugly too-fast animations
I set mine to 1.25 on all 3 using SystemUI Tuner or ADB.
I’m having the same issue....I don’t like the way it looks without animations and neither with reduce animations turned on. But the way the phone stutters is unacceptable. It’s really fast...it’s the fastest phone...everything opens instantly...but the animations are very very very bad...at least comparing it to my iPad 6th gen. It’s just not that smooth. Even if the hardware is much powerful. Tried every solution that I found in internet...wiped cache..turned on high performance mode..turned of battery optimization for the one ui application...nothing worked...and also I think that with 0.5 from developers options it stutters more...
Without animations it's as fast as you want!
I don't get this fascination with animations. They intentionally add lag!
iOS is different and Android most likely will never be that way.
I wish they could be turned off in iOS too!
Personally I blame Apple for all of this whether it was losing glass icons or all blinding white menus...
OSX animations were bleh and when MS tried copying them in Vista...ugh!
The CPU runs essentially at light speed. When you click on something it should respond similarly.
No animations is like swimming in water.
Adding animations is like replacing the water with molasses.
Not sure why anyone would want that.
But to each is own.
