Hello, welcome to my to my guide on how to unlock your Kindle Fire HDX 7's bootloader. This guide is for mac.
I will be nicknaming the Kindle Fire HDX 7 as thor.
I will be assuming you have TWRP and flashed the .3.2.3 bootloader upgrade and ADB/Fastboot.
Steps:
Go and get python 2.7.X (X = Doesn't matter.)
Open up a terminal window and paste this command in:
ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"
Click to collapse
Now, press enter.
So, now what to do? Well, heres the next thingy
Type this in the terminal:
brew install gcc
brew install mpc
brew install mpfr
Click to collapse
Done.
Now type:
pip install gmpy2
Click to collapse
BAM! You should now have GMPY2 installed.
Now, download this:
cuberHDX.py
Place on desktop.
Open up a ADB Window and type:
./adb shell
cat /sys/block/mmcblk0/device/manfid
cat /sys/block/mmcblk0/device/serial
Click to collapse
Now, type the last 2 digits of your manfid and serial.
M = last 2 digits of Manfid Serial = Your serial code
MMSERIAL
Okay, now open up a terminal window and go to your desktop/folder with cuberHDX.py
Type in this:
./cuberHDX.py 0xMMSERIAL
Click to collapse
This will make a file called 0xMMSERIAL on your desktop, if not do a search for it on your computer.
Next drag that file into where your fastboot is
Now, type in this:
./fastboot -i 0x1949 devices
Click to collapse
Your device should pop up.
./fastboot -i 0x1949 flash unlock 0xmmssssssss.unlock
Click to collapse
Next, wait 5 seconds.
Now, check your screen if it says UNLOCK CODE CORRECT, or something similar. If it doesn't, make a new file with the correct MMSERIAL Code.
./fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot
Click to collapse
BAM! you now have a unlocked bootloader THOR.
If any problems please type in the comments below.

I should have left well enough alone. Bricked it.
Thought I have all the requisites.
Welp, now I have new search term! Unbrick

Judging by your sig, you must of had 13.4.5.2 installed. You can't unbrick now, cause you fried your device not reading my guide right.
Little help please
haven't done anything on android for a while but I'm not completely hopeless i promise. i understand everything necessary in this guide but i am a little confused, i have 13.3.2.2, what is the best procedure to get to a rooted 3.2.3 and TWRP installed? i don't want to accidentally go over 3.2.3 and not be able to unlock.
another note, are we talking 14.3.2.3 or 13.3.2.3? Mine is 13.3.2.3, just an fyi

Make sure your device is in airplane mode so it won't attempt to download any OTA updates in the background.
For root access, you can just use towelroot. From there, you can find instructions for TWRP on this thread. thor is the codename for the HDX 7, while apollo references the 3rd generation HDX 8.9 (so you'll obviously want the first one). Alternatively — instead of using adb — you could also flash it straight from the device itself using Flashify.

You should obviously be fine if you enabled WiFi for a few minutes, but you can install apps directly through adb.
https://developer.android.com/tools/help/adb.html#commandsummary
Getting there
So i have rooted and installed twrp... i am to the fast boot step. I enter the first fast boot command and it does not return anything. just goes to a new line like nothing happened.

Hello Everyone,
I am thinking about buying the nexus 7, however I only want to do so to root it.
I have rooted my HTC Incredible and my Kindle Fire, both of those were pretty easy to root.
Is the nexus 7 just as easy?
I have done some looking around I know there is a utility for the nexus 7 similar to the one for the kindle fire.
I have some experience with rooting but am definitely not an expert.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thank you,
There are many ToolKits available, check the Android Development sub-forum and look for "Nexus 7 ToolKit", I'd post a link but I need 10 posts.
dont use toolkits.
without a toolkit.. fastboot oem unlock, flash a custom recovery, flash a custom rom or the su binaries, reboot, and profit. thats all. never any need for a root toolkit on any nexus device.
Your be wise to listen to the senior member than the junior member who uses toolkits.
Especially since he has a similar thread askmg the same thing.

toolkits generally are easy. but its also easier to mess things up. and if you dont know what you are doing in the first place at that point, its easy to turn your device into a real brick. taking a little time to learn the right way will also save you when you mess up your device too, since its generally easy to fix things if you are semi familiar. plus, the people that make the root toolkits also mess up sometimes. so you can do everything right in a root toolkit and still mess up

That does sound pretty easy.
I am going to come to you for help when I get my G7
I keep reading people's posts about their G7 C90 and other numbers, are they talking about serial numbers?
Are we able to look at the package and identify by the serial number when it was made?
So, if we look for a newer serial number we wont run into some of the QA issues people are having?

ive got mine from an older batch, no issues here.
honestly, it doesnt make a difference to me which method you chose to root your device, its your device. im just tired of reading new threads that people have started because they messed up their devices using a root toolkit, then really messed it up trying to fix it(because they didnt know how). yea, helping them increases my thanks and post counts, but id rather they didnt need that help to begin with :silly:

adb/fastboot. this works, its not the most recent but has all that you need. adb for dummies(both adb and fastboot are included) http://www.mediafire.com/?qrjo6bi8ayblj1r
and the driver for your device. when i plugged my device in via usb while it was in tbe bootloader, the android driver installed all by itself(windows7).

So, just out of curiosity, is it possible to root any android device using command lines?
I was thinking of buying an off brand android tablet on eBay just to tinker with.
Can I use commands to root that as well?

well, the "fastboot oem unlock" is only for nexus devices. google made it easy to unlock the bootloader of any nexus, they made it an option. once you enter that line, you will have a popup on that device that explains that you will lose whatever data, then you press either yes or no. also, you can relock any nexus device with "fastboot oem lock"
I used a toolkit and didn't mess anything up. Took me 30 mins from getting it out o the box.

Root 4.2
METHOD 1 (RECOMMENDED)

thanks to Gnurou
"So, I have finally updated my SHIELD rooting method to support Tegra Note 7 as well, so you guys don't need to install weird programs on your PCs:
https://github.com/linux-shield/shield-root
Rooting by itself is quite easy, you need to have adb and fastboot on your system then:
1) Enable USB debugging in the developer options and plug your TN7
2) Download https://github.com/linux-shield/shie...7.img?raw=true
3) In a shell, issue "adb reboot-bootloader"
4) In the same shell, go into the directory containing root_tn7.img and run "fastboot boot root_tn7.img".
Rooting will take ~15 seconds and the tablet will reboot. You should then have SuperSU installed and working.
Note that these are not exactly the instructions mentioned on the README file of my Github repository. That's because TN7's bootloader is not interactive as SHIELD's for the moment, I hope this will be fixed.". All thanks to Gnurou
4.2 Chinese root method
METHOD 2
______________________________________________________
Ok so for starters the tegra note does come with an unlocked boot loader so that a big plus. To root I followed these steps..
"There is another method to root the tegra note easily if you know chinese......
You may download the software called Jin Shan Mobile Assistant at the site below:
google it --> (zs.ijinshan.com)
EDIT: HERE IS A DIRECT LINK TO DOWNLOAD THE ROOT TOOL
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2Sc2UBbSHchb1pBUGpPN2N1Sm8/edit?usp=sharing
click and download the PC ver. setup file at right handside.(wrote 支持设备:安装win8/Win7/Vista/XP系统)
After installation, plug in your tegra note via USB. Press the ROOT大師 at the bottom left corner.
It will checked your device model as P1640. Then press "確定". It will simply root your device immediately.
:good::good::good:"
Thanks to hotsuma2000
Once I was rooted using the method above I installed Supersu from market and it replaced the superuser from the above method.. I then removed all apps that were installed from using the Chinese root.
STEPS
__________________________________________
The .exe file to download is about 30mb.
Once you download the file run it using Windows.
Open the program after installation.
Make sure USB debugging is checked on your device. (FYI to get developer options go to settings about tablet and press on build number until a message pops up saying you have Dev options.)
Plug the tegra note into your PC and the program should then recognize your device at which point you will see the root option.
Click root and magic...
The root program will install it's own version of superuser but don't worry I will get to that.
Once rooted go to Google play and download Supersu by chain fire then open it. You should then be prompted to install.. It will say another superuser app is detected and ask to replace..
There you have it feel free to ask away anything on your mind
If I was a help to anybody please throw me a thanks

Where's the info? Please post the solution you found. I've been digging through forum after forum and have tried 3 or 4 "one-click" root tools. So far nothing has worked. I really want to use Titanium Backup on this device.
UPDATE I finally got root on my Tegra NOTE 7!!! The process was a bit haphazard and inept but after enough tinkering I was able to get it done! Since the method is a bit involved I would recommend waiting for an easier solution. That being said, for those, like me, who just can't wait feel free to PM me and I'll point you in the right direction.
feel free to pm me for instructions or direction
I would be interested in directions for how to root. Why not just post them in this thread?

Fantastic! It didn't work the first time I tried it, though I think that's because the program hadn't detected the tablet yet, but the second time it worked like a charm! It's a shame that PC program is in Chinese... it actually looks pretty cool! Tried on another computer and it worked fine, installed SuperSU and cleaned up the extra apps. Thanks!!
Now next step is getting a custom recovery so we can do backups

Have not tried this yet but sounds ok.
Think I will wait for recovery as I want to try the exellent xposed framework on the note.
And then the wonderfull gravity box module.
Should be ok but safer to have a backup I think.
Thanks for finding and sharing this with us.

These instructions will work for the EVGA TN7, correct? Sorry to ask the question, but I had a thought there may be differences between the EVGA and AV models. Thanks for any reply.
Yes, I've searched and worked for hours on this. I keep hitting a brick wall.
D800, rooted, TWRP, KK rom.
Even though I didn't ask for it somehow the OTA must have installed because my phone rebooted and then was stuck in recovery boot-loops. I can't boot into download mode which means I can't restore to stock or do anything. Do I have any options or is it time to head to the ATT store and try a warranty replacement?
Thanks in advance.

Note: If you ever need to upgrade back to lollypop, you should follow these steps so you do not brick device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/tools-fire-hd-67-rooting-gapps-t3371242/page4
Awesome find !!! Here is a direct link to the 5.2.0 update file:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/lolipop-ota-capture-t3141810
After the downgrade, install TWRP, and upgrade to 4.5.4 but this time with root and fully working GAPPS:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/root-v2-0-fireos-4-5-4-gapps-t3150613
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/how-to-upgrade-to-4-5-4-twrp-root-t3141648
This way one goes directly to SuperSu, and a clean device with no traces of KingRoot.

ah yes good idea. I'm hoping someone with ROM development knowledge will start a build. We've got just about everything setup so that a custom ROM can run

The tricky part is that the unlocked bootloader still needs a signed kernel. Which is pretty constraining. It'd be interesting to replace the boot preloader, but the risks are high.
Upon boot (if connected to PC), the system flashes MT65xx pre-loader. Which seems to indicate that one could start looking into programs such as "Smart Phone Flash Tool" and "MTK Droid Tools" for MTK chipsets.
Another hope is that the 5.0 version would be sufficiently buggy, such that the bootloader can be made to boot unsigned kernels.

Hashcode has gotten around this issue multiple times with something called a bootstrap but I'm not too sure how it works

Btw, any chance you could post the direct link to 5.0 preview (for non-developers), since it's probably behind some registration page or something ...
i just signed in with my amazon account, you will need to unroot your fire and reset it as 5.0 is a OTA.

I wish I could find that bin file link... I looked for it but could not find a link to the actual bin file.. If ota's download to the sdcard then It could still be accessed but I don't know where it downloads to. If it downloads to the data dir of the app it would be inaccesable since you need to be on the latest update in order to download the 5.0 version and on the latest version we have no root which means no access to data dir

It worked perfectly. Thanks
Despite really wanting root and the possibility of using my already paid for apps from the Play store, I really like the lollipop version of fire os. I do think it's a bit ridiculous they haven't retained the old kindle skin because it's exactly how every real android tablet looks but at this point they should be forced by law to let people use the Play store as they wish. Sort of like how Verizon was once forced to allow tethering without a subscription.

does adb devices list your device. Maybe try re-downloading the update in case of corruption

Perfect timing! Lost root last week and hoped for a way to get back. You the man
I wonder if there is a way to stop the update once it's downloaded, in order to grab the 5.0 update bin from /cache.
This would help to re-pack the update in a way that does not re-write key partitions, then one can have TWRP and root on 5.0
It does sound like 5.0 is a nice update, since it provides stock Android. That's what custom ROMs are usually for, but Amazon will give it away !

I was wondering the same. Seems like you could rename the otaverifier apk back to (plain) .apk and get the download but by keeping com...otaverifier blocked it wouldn't install. I'm just not sure these developer updates are handled like any other.
Does anyone know how to root the ZTE Maven 3 (z835)?
Need the same info.
Looking for a root confirmation for either this ZTE Maven 3 (z835) or Pixi Avion (STALA570BGP4P) both under $30 android phones I want to use as sort of an iPod touch alternative.
Can't find solid info on either one.
Bootloader unlock
I just want to unlock the bootloader I want to Port a rom to this device
I think there is some new protection they added to prevent developer mode the usual way. When I tap the build number several times, I get this big N in the middle of the screen.

Have you tried the old write protection method yet?
---------- Post added at 05:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:29 PM ----------
Run this command in adb shell or terminal
Adb reboot disemmcwp
status update
Any updates on this? Did the adb reboot disemmcpw command work?
Idk I don't have a computer I've seen that command on a couple forums so I thought someone could try it out it is to disable write protection

Not sure - I think this is useful to gain root persistence from what I'm reading. ADB and root tools (like kingroot on pc/android) don't have any more permissions than they did before. We need to somehow exploit FTM or EDL mode for unlocked bootloader, like how the Axon 7 was unlocked. I don't think we'll have any luck with regular userland exploits on Android 7.1.1 with July security update...

Yeah the axon 7 was great to root with exploits I wish so i wish someone had a bunch of free time to make one for this phone
Whatever you guys want me to install on this phone; I'll be happy to. A year ago I got the Alcatel Ideal 4060a for $10 on Black Friday, unlocked it for free right away, (this was before AT&T required 6 months of active service to unlock) and now "that" phone is rooted, has it's own TWRP recovery, there's a Custom Rom for it on XDA, etc.
1 year later, I picked up this ZTE Maven 3 on Black Friday for $8, unlocked it for $1.70 online. I hope the similarities don't end there. These phones are great casting devices.
The ideal was a great phone but this zte is stubborn try the write protect command with king root on the first post in this

Disabling system write protection before rooting didn't wok. The Maven 3 is recognized by ADB just fine, reboots fine after "Adb reboot disemmcwp", Kingo ROOT completes the root-check to 100%, but it shows the dreaded "ROOT Failed" message.
word?
I have 2 of these sitting on my desk, unopened.
Would like to put in service, but not on AT&T rapine.
Try putting the phone in FTM mode and plugging the phone into your PC and run the root program. The only issue with that is it works until the phone is rebooted. That's worked on other ZTE phones I've had. I haven't seen a stable solution yet.

That doesn't work either.
If I could just remove those stupid "Play Movies & TV, Play Music, and Gmail" apps I never use, I would be happy. Those apps alone take up around 200mb of storage just being installed, you can't disable them either.
