Got my phone today and have been setting it up all evening. 2 questions come up. I've always used better keyboard, when I install the apk, the keyboard is huge and not usable. No idea why? The other issue is, is there a setting to use one wallpaper on the lockscreen while using a different one on the home screen? thanks

im looking for a good today screen launcher...ive looked through tons and tons of pictures of today screens on here, and found a couple that look close to want i want, but i dont know how they did it.
im looking for an app so that my today screen is a launcher like the iphone/ipod touch kinda layout...
or like the programs folder but with a custom background.
ive used spb plus and clauncher but you cant use decenct quality icons, and there always small...
also...when i use a background image on my phone, it always adds a transparent white layer over top of it, how do i just make it my image?
The HTC Home plugin combined with the HTC Home Customizer is pretty widely used and allows for a lot of customization.
i installed that but i didnt have much time to play with it.
didnt like it that much, and i accidentally called a friend of mine at 1am...i think i hung up before it rang but im not sure
is there a way to do what im walking about with the htc home customization tool?

you could try something like wisbar advance desktop. you can create whatever icons you want or use the high quality ones already built in. check out my today screen here: link. i use it in conjunction with htc home as well
i got the htc customizer to get close to what i want.
i removed all the other tabs exept launcher.
is there a way to remove the bar under the icons?
and maybe add another row of icons?
the htc home plugin puts some weird icon on my taskbar to show battery charge but it looks really weird and removed my time/date :S
and it slows my phone down, smaller alternative?

Take a look at some of these, you may have to do a little work but you should be able to get what you want.

p.s. There is a reg edit for the battery icon/time/date issue. I will see if I can find the link.

Hi there,
Is it possible to just change the lockscreen background but leave the rest of the lockscreen the same?
I know that there are several applications which will provide an alternate lockscreen but I would much rather keep the original if possible.
Cheers.
I'd like to know this too. Even my HTC Tattoo could have separate wallpaper and lockscreen backgrounds. Why not on the desire?

At a guess it's something to do with the live wallpapers.
search the market for WidgetLocker.

lockbot is a good alternative, you get several styles of lock screen and all are customizable
Just installed Lockbot Free to check it out, not very impressed to be honest, the original lock screen appears for a couple of seconds before the Lockbot one which ruins the whole appearence.
Have I done something wrong or is this just how it is?
EDIT
OK, bought & installed WidgetLocker which seems much better. There is still a delay if you lock the phone & then turn the screen back on straight away where it shows the original lock screen but it is negligable. I haven't experimented with all the options yet but it seems pretty comprehensive.
just noticed the wildfire has the option to change lockscreen
Hi,
I've been with WinMo since 2001 until about a week ago when I switched to andriod. I have many questions and was unsure where to turn to. I will try here. If there is a better place, please let me know.
I have a Desire Z that I got with ATT 3G bands. I have successfully rooted the device, overclocked it, and installed Cyanogen 6.
1) When I hit the power button, I still have to swipe my finger across the screen to unlock. How do I make it so I don't have to do this?
2) I had some difficulty upgrading to Cyanogen 6 and was unable to get 7 to work. IfI want to mess around further with roms, is there some way I can backup EVERYTHING so if I screw up, I can make my phone exactly the way I have it now without a whole lot of work re-installing stuff, etc.?
3) The link to the phone, app, and browser are all stuck on the bottom of the phone. Can I get rid of this?
4) When laying apps out on the home screen, there seems to be some kind of grid that they are locked into that makes it hard to move them exactly where I want them. It will let me lay them so they overlap each other, but not very close to each other. Is there some way to overcome this?
5) I can't seem to arrange apps close to the top of the screen because the garbage can overlay slides down and when I move the app near the top it thinks I am trying to throw it away.
6) Is there an app that will show both the current weather and an icon for the weather conditions in the status bar?
Wow, a lot of questions...
1, Go to Settings->CyanogenMod Settings->Input Settings and select Trackball wake/Trackball Unlock or Menu Unlock and after that you will be able to select Disable Unlock Slider
2, Try Titanium Backup (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup)
3, As far as I know CM6 uses ADW.Launcher as default launcher. You can change it to LauncherPro (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fede.launcher) which is fully customisable
4, There is a grid which can't be changed
5, LauncherPro has the trash icon at the bottom
6, Sorry, I didn't find any
Try beautiful Widgets for the weather

Hello Everyone.
I went and found some of these answers on my own. I also was able to upgrade to CM7.
1) I found an app for it but will try PsHeger's solution.
2) I found that the bootloader/Rom manager do a good job of this, too.
3) I was able to remove it in the app launcher rather than using pro.
4) This absolutely pisses me off. I have a Winmo 6.5 phone that lets me have a nice, organized home screen. I can't believe there isn't a better solution to this. Good lord.
6) Go Weather App does this.
if you set your grid settings to 10x10 rows and columns in launcher pro, you can put the icons and widgets pretty much anywhere.

You can try this, but you will need to buy a pro key for laincherpro to strech the widgets or they will look really stuid

I found that the auto stretch check box pretty much solved the problem with layout.

I have a rooted kindle using Go Launcher. I've picked a Go Launcher wallpaper but when I swipe to different homescreens the wallpaper does not scroll. Is there a way to get it to scroll?

Were you able to find a solution for this? I know what you mean. I'm running the fire with go launcher, i fixed it so the wallpaper doesn't reset or anything and live wallpapers work. However they do not scroll when switching screens left or right. Anybody out there know how to fix it?
...Didn't want to repost so I just put it down again here.
I've been trying to figure out the wallpaper scrolling since mid december. Sadly I don't know Android well enough to know where the control for it is hidden or what might be missing from the Amazon stock rom that breaks that function. Still poking through CM7 and trying to see which of the thousands of differences is responsible.
Yeah I have been looking it up for a while now too. Will post if I find an answer. It would certainly be welcomed.
Hi
As a complete newcomer to the Android opertaing system forgive me for asking what might be a couple of silly questions!
Firstly, there seems to be a few (three?) home screens. Can I make one of these always appear first when I switch on the Nexus7.
Secondly, when I purchased it a couple of weeks ago there seemed to be a whole host of widgets present, some of which seem to do nothing. Where do these widgets come from and what are they supposed to do. I have tried searching the web for information on this but have come up with nothing that really explains what widgets are.
Any help would be appreciated.
There should be a stock 5 home screens on Jelly Bean. The one in the middle (3rd) will be the default one. This can't be changed unless you use a custom launcher, like Nova Launcher. Then you can play around with them however you like.
As for the widgets question - which widgets are you talking about? As far as I know, there are no widgets which do "nothing"
I am not entirely sure about what you mean when you talk of widgets, but here goes:
Widgets do all sorts of things, from being toggle switches to news widgets. The ones on the screens when yo first get your tablet are Google widgets. If I remember correctly they are mostly play store and media related. You can remove them easily by touching and holding the widget for a second and dragging it to the 'remove' icon that appears on the top of the screen.
Yo can install and remove widgets the same way you would install a program from the play store, widgets can be accessed through the apps menu and dragged onto any of your virtual screens.

Thanks for the information. IT doesn't seem like 5 screens but I will move my icons to it and see if that does the job.
As for the widgets, this may have been covered in the next reply. Some of mine do nothing if I "click" on them and look like web pages or similar.

There are definitely 5 home screens but only 3 have widgets placed on them when you take it out of the box for the first time.

Sorted, thanks. Moved my widgets to the third home screen which now opens by default.
