I always keep my G4 in a clear tpu case, but when I took it out of the case to change the battery, I dropped it, and I cracked the lens cover. I was terrified at first since one of the main reasons I bought the phone was for the camera. But, after I took the battery cover off and looked at the camera lens housing, it appeared that the lens housing would come off pretty easily.
So I went on ebay and found a $15 "OEM" replacement cover.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/151794398884?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
Who knows if it's actually an LG part, but I put the replacement on last night:
I accidentally ordered a gray colored one instead of the silver, but I think it looks fine.
The only issue I ran into was getting the part back into place. I can only tell you that you need to put the top of the piece in first, and work your way down.
PS: Wow, I just realized how different those pics look. The first pic (the cracked pic) was taken with another G4, and the 2nd pic (the repaired pic) was taken with an iPhone 6s. The shot taken with the 6s really misrepresents the case/color of the phone.

The question here is how did you take the photo with the 6S ?

Its kinda ironic that this happens only when it was out of the case. which case was it btw ?
Could have been worse and been the screen.

You ordered the silver one instead of gold.
But otherwise well done. its easy to repair this thing

i turned the knob. it's cumbersome, but it was a design choice.

I think the point is that the 6s was only just announced yesterday and won't be available for pre order until this weekend/next week?
Mr. Pedantic is highlighting that you meant 6 Plus??
Ps. I spotted that too and wished I was the first to pick it up ?
To keep this post somewhat on topic. I have to say one of the reasons I bought this phone was because of the iFixit review highlighting how easy it is to repair. My last phone (HTC One M8) basically required i remove the screen from the case and then split the screen from the circuit board to get to the stuff I needed to repair.... Well that went so wrong I had to buy a new phone...

Definitely, ease of repair is a selling point with this device. Not one that is mentioned very often by reviewers who only want to praise or bash the designers that only come into the picture after the engineers are done with their work.
I think the LG engineers who built this this thing should be proud
There used to be another korean company that until recently had the same philosophy, sadly they seemed to have lost their way this year. Was playing with various S6 variants in the shop yesterday and i hate the way the camera lens protrudes from the back, that lens is just begging to be scratched, smudged or cracked. but no, thin is in (!), its got a glass back so thin and slippery is a good recipe for dropping. Will be much harder to fix that thing by yourself.

Taking this baby apart....

hey everybody i got a G1 the black one and one of my buddies just got the brown one that tmobile started selling and i am so wishing i had gotten that one. The finish on it is i think much higher quality than the black one. So i was wondering if anyone has taken apart a G1 yet and if it would be hard to do the conversion. I wonder if tmobile will do a replacement on the phone so i can change color....
WTF are you asking about a conversion?
I'm on 5 different g1 forums and haven't heard of anyone taking their's apart yet. I would assume it would be a tough task to switch out from black to brown casing. Maybe possible though...
i dont understand. what are you swapping? swapping his case and yours? why dont you just trade phones.
its just a question anyway i went to tmobile and they replaced it for the white one with no problems...so im happy now. But i was just wondering if anyone had taken a G1 apart

oh i thought so. thanks
hi, i took mine apart, was sick of it creaking and the screen not being tight on the device.
wasn't brave enough to take the components off the housing though (yet!).
once you get the outer shell around the battery (once battery cover is removed), it's all there for the taking. a wire either side connects seperate pcbs.
quite a few screws, and just undoing one by the microsd slot, the housing pops apart, so stopped doing that lol!
the whole thing is plastic, with a metal sheet under where the battery goes. all pretty flimsy stuff. there doesnt appear to be a screw on the pivot pin so dont know how that comes off or tightens. and unless there's a hole through to screen housing, how do you get the final fourth screw off as its hidden by keyboard?
will take a photo tomorrow if i can be bothered to open it again, but as i say. all pretty flimsy stuff. hence why if you look down the line where the volume rocker is, you should see the case is 'bowed' just from taking the battery cover on and off!
the keyboard surround should have been made of steel or something stronger.
i actually did take it apart once~~i also manage to not break the VOID sticker~~its not that hard~~as the way i see it the housing should be able to swap with no problem~~
replacement housings have hit eBay, might want to give a look at the individual components for the answers on how to disassemble:

you can return it for 14 day "buyers remorse" and get the bronze one... its not bad it almost black as I recall from opening day when I bought mine but I went for black since my first choice was the white and there were no white ones atleast in my area, (philly metro)

edit:
as a general rule I dont like to take sh1t apart thats still covered for defects by the OEM...but thats just me.

what awful crack!...
Strange that the "new" redesigned case has date of manufacture -> 08w39 and the "old" cracked one is -> 08w44... Could it be that they knew it all the time that these cracks will be happening, but instead of mass recall the "cracky" cases they sold all of that saying "What will be will be...."

Thats because it is a sticker on the phone. Not the case.
somehow i dont think its the redesign issue, something else thats unknown must be the problem, my xperia date is 09W08 with the same design as the second pic, still no cracks...
Uh... where's the difference in the design? Can't really tell.
Had a crack in the same place, and now also have the "new" redesign case replacement.

No sharp corner in the new design. The first thing you learn to not have when you study design. Everyone learns that except the tossers at SE

yeah bro SE has the worst designs...
Does somebody have the old design on pic without the crack so it will be easier to see?
Edit: Fixed it. Nobody can miss the difference now.
if you look closely you can see the difference. the corner where the crack starts is different from the one without the crack. the corner is filleted (ie. rounded) where as the corner with the crack is pointed.
i was gonna wait before i send my x1 to get the housing replaced. i didn't see why people would send the phone in for repairs when SE haven't even come up with a redesigned housing yet and just end up getting cracks all over again. but now, it seems like a good time to do so. btw, i've counted a total of 8 cracks on my x1.

Good choice. This was my second time I had it on service for a cracked case and if you put it all togehter (had it on service three times) I have had my phone on service for 63 days. That's 2 months on a phone that isn't a year old yet.
time to repair
I have the problem where my phone won't charge unless it's turned off.
But now I also have the cracked case problem.... So I think it is time to repair.
I really love the phone... but at that price, I expect better quality. I just hope they don't keep it too long.

[I9000][I9000B][MOD] Camera Glass (replace scratched one)

[IM NOT RESPONSABLE BOUT PROBLEMS OR DAMAGES IN YOUR DEVICE USING THIS PROCEDURES!]
Im a photo enthusiast and i take a lot of care about my Nikon camera and its lenses to ensure its exelent quality and functionality. With my SGS I9000B isn't different!
I saw some dust inside my lenses and decided to clean it up because it interfere directly on the image quality.

In the cleaning process i scratched my SGS lenses from inside! (yes, using twizzers+loose cotton). Was a bad idea.
Thinking bout a replacement of entire housing, didnt find it at eBay because I9000B has a Digital TV antenna and a hole for it. Its a special housing.
Decided then to buy another international housing to take only the lenses, but no money at my paypal account :-(.
Without money, finally decided to take apart my dead Nokia N95-1 and use its CarlZeiss Vario Tessar lenses!!!!!
After opening the SGS again, take that steel frame that protects and decorates the camera lens was a boring process. Three bent fins through the housing, which are hidden by a plastic cover:
After removing this frame, I saw the lens is very well glued to the plastic. Which requires some work with tweezers to avoid damaging the substrate that has outline (it was used as a guide to the size of the new lens).
After that, I put a lens on the other (the N95 but is wider, same thickness) and made the cuts using a sharp scissors.
So now just put everything in place, clean the lens again, polishing and close the device.
Not intend to leave this lens for a long time. Only until i can buy the official Samsung (taken from a new housing).
This Nokia does not have enough glue to adhere to the plastic housing. This little space between the lens and the plastic inferfere directly in autofocus and the inhibition of reflexes = photo as ****!
The results:
Photo taken with SGS I9000B with my new lenses:
Hope this helps people that as me didnt found anything bout Samsung Galaxy I9000/I9000B camera glasses/lenses replace.

Yes. Like all hardware mods in PCs, Game consoles, notebook systems or IT generally, some electronic/engineer knowledge and creativity are very appreciated.
Or, assume all the risks trying "blindly" the procedures(for me, the best way to learn something by yourself).
Great info, thanks!
Does anybody have any idea weather there is a way of polishing that lens? My phone is already a year and a half old and the picture quality is really really bad, since I was not taking care and had my phone in pocket with keys and everything all the time
I was thinking of some method like used for polishing front lights on cars. Do you think it would work?
Never never try the polishing! I've tried today but i fu**ed the lens and the photos was blurred. But i had an "old" nokia 5610, changed the lens and now the photos are too much better, almost like new!

Could be residule dust in the housing being knocked about and ending up on the cam lens from static. Sorry to see that on your week old device man

If it's any consolation, my little Jiayu G4S has exactly the same problem with BOTH cameras. I've come to expect it from these relatively cheap phones. I'm also fairly good at taking my Jiayu apart now - looks like I'll be doing the same with this one too soon
Also, after just a week my back cover is very creaky indeed. I think I've taken it on and off six times to swap SIM cards etc. My Jiayu is a solid as the day I got it almost two years ago.

That's really frustrating
people say there are holes between the 3.5mm phone jack and the camera, that's where the dust came from.
Yes, my back cover is not tightly fit, the battery is the same. People call me insane, but I could feel the battery rocking left and right when I shake it hard.

Yeah, same for me. Had not noticed it before, but that's not anything major though. I'm more concerned about the dust in camera, although I don't have this problem yet (and I hope I won't).
This made me remember a problem with LG P500 when dust would get under the digitizer.

There is a dealer called "Xiaomi Home" on Aliexpress who apparently offers these. Whether "Xioami Home" is an official subsidiary of Xiaomi, well, who knows. But anyway, supposedly original Xioami back cases are available at http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/100-Original-XIAOMI-Redmi-Note-2-Case-Protective-Cover-Case-For-Redmi-Note-2-phone-case/811568_32446023315.html. I noticed I have similar dust like things under front camera hole I think they were not there when I just received phone. Seems like dust came from somewhere, any ideas what we could do with this sh.t?
If it's coming through the headphone jack like some people suggested, you could try getting a can of compressed air and spraying into the head phone jack, should unseat the dust without damaging any components.
Possible fix..
My RM Note 2 had this problem too!! After 4 days! If you blow in the headphone port the ff camera steams up.. So that's definitely the problem. I fixed it quite simply.. Took the phone apart.. (easy for anyone with basic phone tools and a little experience..) Just took the shielding off, no need to remove motherboard.. Then lifted FF camera module out and used a very lint free cloth to get rid of any dust etc..
I then used a tiny tiny bit of blutac to form a gasket around the camera module, making sure that no Blutac is visible through the front of the phone.. Pressed the module in to place gently, and did the blow test to check it was successful.. And yes! 2 days later and no dust at all.. It's just a slight design oversight.. The camera housing isn't well sealed enough.
Hope this might be helpful to some.. It's probably not very well explained.. Sorry. Annoying to have to do this on a brand new device.. But my HTC one M8 had a similar problem.. Can't be fixed.. And it cost £550.. So an easy fix on an otherwise flawless and awesome £100 device is very forgivable.
This probably ends your warranty and could well break something especially if you don't really know what you're doing. I'm not responsible for thermonuclear war or anything do with your phone. Proceed with caution at your own risk.
Regards, happy Chinese bargain buying!

Still no problems.

i hope that xiaomi will fix this problem in a future release...who knows..
If you see dust on the front camera, try put your mouth over the 3.5 jack and start to aspire with force. The dust will magically disappear
However dust doesn't affect photo quality

Sorry, But I dont think this looks like frosted glass at all.
That backside doesn't look like mine for sure.
If this is an issue to you, return it to Sony or call customer service........very simple
Did you buy a secondhand phone? Seems like it was replaced
Looks like a screen protector. Can you feel the raised edges of the plastic sides or camera lens? If not it's most definitely a protector. All the replacement backs I've found have been frosted.
I admire the skill of the guy that put that screen protector (if is one).
I believe the back cover has been replaced since there is no sign of a screen protector. But what kind of manufacturer manufacts fake cover that looks nothing like the real one...
I replaced my back cover due to a scratched lens cover, which is glossy as opposed to frosted, so agree with suggestions that it could have been replaced at some point.

Sure thing! I'll PM you the link and you can post it if anyone else asks? Having been on XDA for 5 years, I've never actually posted anything so the 10 comment limit still applies

I tried to order one but they don't ship outside the UK. Maybe I was wrong in assuming they were all frosted simply because they look like it in the stock photos they use to sell it! Are these glass or plastic?

Ah, sorry didn't realise they were mainland UK only.
I actually had no idea it would be glossy until it arrived - it was a quick purchase so I could replace the plastic camera cover and get back to taking pictures without lens flare. To be fair though, all reviews etc. I've read all talk about the frosted glass back so I'm pretty certain on closer inspection that it is plastic.
Not a deal breaker personally, I imagine it won't shatter as easily and I have put a vinyl cover on it anyway. Came with adhesive already on it too which seems to be a bonus looking elsewhere, though I'm not convinced the waterproofing will be guaranteed with it any more. But Im not in a hurry to test that...
Finally got my glossy back in the mail and figured I'd follow up with y'all. Someone may gain knowledge from it.
Purchased from here:

It is a bit of a weird white compared to the frosted back but similar to the front.
It's glass, and extremely fragile. I cracked it taking it out of the packaging. It's probably as fragile as an egg shell. I'm still on the hunt for another to strip to clear and expose the electronics. If y'all know of any plastic ones let me know.
