Hey all, just wondering what the Fire experience is like in Canada? I just ordered one today, and having second thoughts after reading that Canadians aren't able to get through the registration phase on the device.
All I want is something that I can surf with, run apps/games that I install myself, and music/video streamed over wifi.
So, did I make a mistake, or what? I'm sure at some point soon there will be a custom Android ROM and everything will work then, but am concerned that the stock ROM won't be useful for me.
Thanks!
I have a kindle fire and I'm in Canada as well. I had no problems registering any US only kindle devices in Canada. I even got Prime to work, but I'm using a DNS re-routing service called Unblock US. You can install any apps that you like, however I couldn't install any apps from the amazon app store as it said that it was not available in my area. It must be because I didn't have a US credit card as my 1 purchase 1 click payment method. I installed Google's market and sideload everything that isn't there (facebook, twitter, etc). I'm using it to listen to Pandora and Netflix US in Toronto and I'm using Go Launcher EX. It's great! The kindle is a great device for Canadians, assuming that you're a bit technically savvy and you're willing to root the device. As Amazon released the source code for their port and ICS is also open source, it's only a matter of time until ICS is ported to Kindle Fire. You didn't make a mistake. I'm sure that you'll enjoy the device.
Thanks! I hadn't seen the Europe or Australia threads when I posted mine. Thanks for the confirmation though!
MBought the kf for my wife today and I took one look at the launcher and was confused to put it politely. I'm an owner of a transformer prime and galaxy nexus and I love ice. I'm wondering if there is a post you guys could point me to or tell me what the pros and cons will be of rooting this device and running a custom rom? More specifically, there are certain books, NY wife tells me, that say ''kindle fire edition'' or something like that. Would you lose the ability to get those books after a root?

Just some of my opinion :
After rooting the device (not installing a custom rom, only root, you will still be using the Amazon version of Android), you can install full Android Market, alternate launcher(can be switched between Amazon Launcher and alternate launcher you installed.) So in this case you can still enjoy services / app that amazon provides for kindle fire.
If you install a custom rom (CM7[GingerBread] or CM9 [Ice Cream Sandwich], you may gain some more performance but some Amazon services may not work perfectly.
I installed CM7 before and now on CM9, CM7 has less bug and more functional than CM9 I think. Right now CM9 for Fire is still under development and not a stable version for everyone to use. It cannot play HD Youtube and the Hardware Acceleration is not functioning, it also has SOD(Sleep of death) problem that may halt the device and require a reboot.
For more information on custom ROM, you can visit this for the post for CM7 and CM9:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1309
You shouldn't lose the books if you install CM7. Just download the Kindle App and it's pretty much the same thing as using a normal kindle. All of my books that I purchased for my regular kindle transferred over to the Kindle App. Also all the books I downloaded from torrents also showed up in my kindle library when I installed them in the Kindle folder on my KF.
You can install go launcher ex without root and make it look more androidish. That may help
Rooting will disable your KF's ability to stream Amazon video content. To get around this, you can use OTA rootkeeper to unroot or root your KF with one click (though it won't do the initial root). I suspect that installing CM will permanently disable this capability. So, if Amazon video streaming is important, be careful about switching ROMs.
So I bought the 4th gen HDX 8.9, aka "saturn", started looking around the forums, and to my surprise there is 0 development for this model. My guess is nobody was willing to upgrade to this device due to the fact there is very little difference from the previous model(couple of hardware upgrades). The only reason I purchased is Amazon gave me a no interest 5 month payment plan to buy. There are probably a lot of members(new members) looking on this forum and thinking their 8.9 is the same as what is being discussed here. There is not enough clear information to distinguish the two models. Now that Fire OS 4 is out there are no prefixes to the system version, ie: xx.4.5.2, it is just 4.5.2 across the board. As an example there is a thread in the QandA, here, where I see people calling the 4th gen "Apollo" and giving suggestions of downgrading or rooting using apollo software versions. NOT COOL. so as a warning:
BE VERY SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE A 4TH GEN 8.9 BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY MODIFICATION (ROOT/DOWNGRADE/SAFESTRAP) PROCEDURES POSTED ON THIS FORUM
Now to get to the real reason for my post. My 8.9 is currently on software version 22.4.5.2(SATURN) with wifi disabled. I would love to work with some other members to get this rooted and open the door for more development. I have tried the new method using the cve apk to no avail. I think it should work since it does on the older gens. And the only difference in the software versions would be hardware related tweaks. But, maybe I'm missing something. Any suggestions?

In terms of hardware only Chipset or to be precise CPU is changed rest all is same i believe...
For rooting try CVE Rooting apk for Apollo to my knowledge that should work & root device.
Due to locked bootloader and efuse your device future is limited to safe strap that needs to be built for your device yet.
There are some developments going on with APOLLO so that can be or should be implied to Saturn as well (atleast with little modifications)

The underlying exploits should still be viable on 4.5.2 for the saturn, the APK probably just needs some tweaking for other devices.
Anyone willing to test it? I just got my new HDX(got Best Buy to take it back and trade it out) and they gave me a Saturn.... urgh...
Same boat
I too purchased a new hdx 8.9 for the no interest payment system Amazon offers. I've been monitoring this forum for a couple of months, waiting for someone to crack into it. If there is any way I can help any devs working on the device/software, feel free to let me know. I have no development experience, but I don't mind testing and what not.
Whatever helps speed this process up.
I am of course running 4.5.3. Fun.

I'm waiting patiently also. tried every method under the sun on my 4th gen Saturn with no success. boy was I pissed when it updated on it's own. using saferoot installs the supersu app but it's not granting apps superuser permissions. tried downgrading etc. my next step is to open one of the rootable updates rename the binary etc. to see if I can trick it into accepting it.
I have a Saturn with "Fire OS 4.2"... Build Date of September 2014... Can I towelroot???
Scratch that, it updated as I was typing that
Anyone willing to tweak the apk? I'd test, but I have no warranty on this new one...

Rooted Saturn waiting for Safestrap
Hi all,
I have an HDX 8.9 4th Gen (Saturn) device that was updated to 4.5.5.1. Rooted with Kingroot following directions in other parts of the forums. I also had an HDX 7 (Thor) that was updated to 4.5.5.1 and also rooted with Kingroot. I installed Safestrap 4.01 on the 7" device no problem and loaded the Nexus 4.05 custom Rom. Buttery smooth works like a charm. I am waiting on the update to FireOS 5 for the 8.9 as Kingroot is supposed to work to 5.1. Real question here is, will any of the fine Devs here be working to update Safestrap to work on Saturn 4.5.5.1 or will they be waiting for the FireOS 5 update, or doing nothing at all? I truly appreciate all the work they've done in keeping these great devices relevant, even if Amazon has not.
Fire HDX 8.9 (4TH GEN) hacks/work arounds
I just purchased a used Fire HDX 8.9 4th gen. from eBay and although it could not be registered with Amazon for whatever reason (lost, stolen, or ?) I hacked it to work as a regular Android tablet with Google Play Store and Alexa access.
NO ROOT REQUIRED
First I upgraded the Amazon firmware to the latest build by downloading it, renaming the .bin extension to .zip and side loaded it with the native Fire recovery. It loaded and worked fine.
Next I installed the Google Play store and related apps and they work fine.
Next I installed Youtub and it works fine.
Next I installed an e book reader (I like eReader Prestigio) and it works fine.
Next I installed a second launcher (Nova Launcher) and deactivated the native Fire launcher using Launcher HiJacker app and it works fine. Boots to Nova fast.
Next I downloaded the the upgrade to the Alexa app for android and it works even without a registered tablet.
Finally I downloaded and installed the Windows 10 application "Debloater" and disabled many native Amazon Fire apps that will not be needed because I use this device to watch Youtube videos, movies, surf the net, and to read and play on-line chess. It is a great tablet when hacked out of the Amazon echo system.
You can do this also .
Goodluck!
Oh the stock camera didn't work but the "open camera app" works fine.

Could you detail which versions you used? I'm assuming you installed Google Play Services before the Play Store. Which versions did you use? Did you have to install anything else before you could proceed to the next step?
Thanks!
I used the Open GAPPS 7.1 Pico
Hi,
Any ways I can install a 3rd party fresh ROM on my Kindle Fire HD 8 2017 edition? I am sorry for any confusion but did not find anything myself here.
I would like to know this as well as I just purchased one and while I like Amazon FreeTime for my kids, the lack of a REAL YouTube app makes the tab useless IMO as I'm a YouTube Red account holder and need to be able to save video offline for my son to watch while on the road. Standard Android parental controls are the best as I get to pick and choose what apps a child can use.

Currently there is no root for FireOS 5.3.2.1 or above. Without root, you can't install a custom ROM. When, or if root is found, it will be some time thereafter before a custom ROM might be available.

If YouTube is your only intention, then follow this thread. This will let you install All Google things without any problem.
If you understand things properly, you can also install newer version of those from the sources. Working fine for me. My intention is not to register my tab with Amazon but to lock apps so that my kids to not go anywhere wrong.
I just brought my Fire HD 10 2017 (12/15/17). I have it looking/ running almost like stock android. I have the play store, a few Google apps, an app draw & no adds on my lock screen. All without root. Iam still, however, fighting with getting live wallpaper to work & the lock screen wall paper changed.
Ahhhhh man I got so excited when I saw this thread then what a major let down. Any progress on root for the 7th gen. HD 8? I know you guys figured it out for the 10", but I 'm stuck with an 8" I got for Christmas so I went out and bought a SM-T580 10.1" Samsung Galaxy Tab A so I can have fun with root, custom ROMs, etc etc. I hope somebody can tell me some good news on the progress of rooting the 2017 7th gen. Kindle Fire HD 8. What about TWRP for it? No chance bc no root access I'd assume but I'm a noob, lolol. Cheers

Hi, this is currently the major thread looking for root. And, I'm really sad to say this, but the odds are very very high that there will not be TWRP available to this device, ever. Not because it's very hard to compile TWRP for MediaTek, but Amazon keeps their bootloaders locked down, forever. It will be impossible to install TWRP until we crack the bootloader, which is one of the hardest things in Android Exploiiting.
I'm debating on picking up the Fire HD 10 2021 edition during Prime Day sale. Are there ways to put actual android OS rom on it or just adding Play store, google services and stuff with the toolkit. Typically I'd try to do more research but time is a bit limited on the sale so any help would be appreciated. I use to flash roms on phones in the past and just curious if there is any support or ability to do that with the Fire HD tablets. Thanks in advance!

Here's the thing with loading custom roms on any 2019 or newer fire tablet nowadays. No one's been able to find any exploits on the tablets because Amazon has been cracking down on the MediaTek exploits that we would usually be able to use. Especially with the newer OS, I really don't think that anyone will find anything that they can do with unlocking the bootloader and flashing a new ROM since it's basically all been patched.
In terms of Google Play Services and apps, I haven't tried this on the HD 10 2021, but it is most likely possible because I use them just fine on my HD 8 Plus 2020 running the same operating system. So Google Play Store is (most likely) achievable. Hope this helps!
Are the Amazon Fire tablets rootable at all? Able to Magisk? I would like to get into rooting and was hopping we could with this device

Well, yes and no. I know that sounds pretty vague, but it's because it really depends on the tablets.
So recently, people haven't been able to find any exploits that will give them root access to newer tablets, and without an unlockable bootloader, Magisk is definitley out of the question.
On some of the older tablets, as you probably have already seen, there are unlockable bootloaders, but this involves a lot of work to the tablet in terms of software and it isn't as simple as a command like "fastboot oem unlock" (unfortunately).
Basically, I don't think that root will be possible on the HD 10 2021, or at least anytime soon, because the rooting on the older tablets were done by finding exploits in the CPU and Preloader, and then using those exploits to use a hacked bootloader and recovery, and then those would patch the OS to allow you to mod those as much as possible, including giving you the ability to root. Amazon has patched these exploits and no one has been able to use one of the more popular "temporary" root solutions (mtk-su) with the newer tablets since the 2019 HD 10.
So, for now at least, you'll be out of luck.

Did you buy that Fire? I did. Then I immediately ran Fire Toolox (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/windows-tool-fire-toolbox) to make it run like normal Android.
One thing you'll find is that, even though you're able to install the Play Store and do a few more things with the ToolBox, any Amazon tablet running their Fire OS 7.x.x.x versions won't be able to do much with Google apps having to do with communications, that use push notifications (such as Hangouts or Chat). Something likely to do with how Google Play Services is working or interacting with Fire OS. It just won't allow it to work.
I've got Google Chat installed on my 2019 9th gen HD 10 and it had been able to be used to read and respond to received posts, just no notifications on incoming (I relied on another straight Android device for alerts). But sometime in the past two weeks an update to either Chat or (probably) Play Services occurred that makes Chat immediately close when I attempt to open an existing conversation. Bad news since Google is finally announcing the impending shutdown of the IM portion of Hangouts. Hoping to find out more about that on this forum.
