According to John Legere, today is the day he will start cracking down on an estimated 3,000 heavy abusers, some who are using up to 2TB a month of data, by means of hacking the tethering ability on their phone. I wonder how many of you here will be hearing from John and the Executive team at T-Mobile?

Game over...
It sucks that this is happening. I live in a place where I only get 3mbps download on my home DSL.
Comcast refuse to wire my house because it's too complicated. So occasionally I use tmobile and hidden tether. Tmobile provides me about 20mbps download at my house vs DSL.
Yes, I use hidden tether, but I never maxed over 50gb/month.
I dont think you have to worry about tethering 50GB a month. I think it's the people who are using hundreds EVERY MONTH lol. But for those who are using that much, time to figure something else out. If anyone here gets contacted, please update us!
I'm with twe90kid. I've never reached the 50GB barrier yet either.
I have been with T-Mobile for about a month and never touched the tethering option, lol. It won't affect me too much. Wi-Fi and data are around the same speeds for me

From the below quote; I'm hoping he's not going to use this as an excuse to lock down phones or deny service to rooted phones.
"They’re downloading apps that hide their tether usage, rooting their phones, writing code to mask their activity, etc. They are “hacking” the system..."

From his Periscope, this applies to anyone using some means of hiding tether - no matter the overage. Once you go over that 7GB limit, its slow down time and I'm happy they finally did it.
These abusers will probably try to distract everyone by waving their arms about throttling data

Note that Legere is fully aware that thieves will continue to justify their actions and switch the blame to T-Mobile.
I hope he find a way to crackdown on all the data hogs out there.

I agree. Even when I did use to tether hack, I think the most I used was around 50GB. 2TB is complete insanity.
Good riddance
You know who you are people.
"It purifies my heavens, and makes my thoughts Pure"
what's the 7G's he's talking about?
I'm on the truly unlimited with 5 G's of tethering. I have the tether hack app too. I normally tether about 1-4 G's to my tablet thru the built-in tethering. The only time I use the hack is when I'm away from home for an extended period of time, once or twice a year, and have yet to go over 7 G's while doing so. On the other hand I regularly use 40 - 60 G's on my phone a month. What's the 7 G's they're talking about?

Rooting per se doesn't cost carriers money. But what people do with root can translate to lost revenue. From a purely business standpoint, limiting (or outright banning) people that tether truckloads of data is completely reasonable.
I'll keep tethering, these warnings come about every 6 months. Folks will express their opinions, share some misconceptions about what tethering does to network health but never seem dig below the surface and see that the majority of people that tether AREN'T cranking down insane amounts of data. Heck I can easily hit 60gb a month without tethering. Some will say that is detrimental to the network. I would love an objective look at the amount of users and a break down of how many users use what amount of data.. Or ya know keep tossing vague scare tactics our way.
You want to stop tethering stop making it so easy to defeat with client side provisioning and user agent sniffers.
I used to use mine for home internet i would hit like 100GB a month. I was talking to the TMO Rep and he said most of the employees do it too.

You've been throttled my friend. Its still technically "unlimited" but at a lower speed. Its in the fine print unfortunately ...they fail to tell us that when signing up...
There's a rumor there's a fix to it...
Put www.internet2.com in the apn settings...I haven't tried it because I barely hit 4gb/month. Give it a whirl.

wait till your new billing cycle rolls around and stop using so much data.
I think something is jacked with the data collection service. I went from 6.99GB of data on one day, and by the next morning they said i used 2.5GB of data via my phone in one 12hr period. And no i wasn't tethering.
You are correct in the fact that they do not outright tell you this, however, if you read the data usage contract they give you, they state it there. Fair Usage Policy. They never shut it off, so technically it's unlimited, but 5GB throttle down close to dial-up/Edge speeds is what you are going to get until your next billing cycle.

Yah throttled is a bltch...... My billing cycle usually is on the 23rd and supposedly I went over 5gig on the 27th of last month, I dont know how the hell that happened when I used it less than I usually do. I didnt even tether at all last month....

I thought that the standard 29.99 and then 20 dollar loyalty plans limit was 10gb a month before being throttled.

I have been tethering the crap out of my phone this month cuz the damn modem broke, but have not seen any repercussions. It's blatantly obvious something has gone wrong here. Not complaining though just wanting to learn more about how it works.
look at it this way. at least the unlimited cap (that sounds so stupid), isn't 2gb like some carriers. but im not liking this trend of paying more for less.

I still use a lot of mobile data, but don't break the 5GB mark any longer...as soon as I get home I hook onto WiFi.
It is still unlimited, though. Hell, remember old phones and their SLOW WAP access? At least it's better than that...

I'm rooted and do use wifi tether from time to time. But only when what ever it is I'm doing can't be done on my eVo.
I mean 49GB in 2 days is just plain abuse. That's 3.5GB's a day... thats a serious amount of data.
Last month I used just under 3GB's of 3g data for my whole billing cycle. I did use over 40GB's of data over wifi. And I consider myself a power user, big time. I use my eVo for everything, from sending and receiving pictures through mms(I'm a chef and always sending/receiving pics to/from other chefs to try and one up one another), writing and editing daily special menus and regular menus to doing all of my daily cost control spread sheets. Not to mention going online to find at pricing and availability on products I use or need.
Trust me m8, more than likely you have Sprints attention. Keep us up to date on any emails or phone calls you get... Good Luck!!!!

You speak as if Sprint has no idea wat ur doing... u just posted ur usage stats directly from ur account from Sprint's website. Remember karma does not have favorites or exceptions so don't be surprised when Sprint cuts u off like Lorena Bobbit did to her hubby's man-parts. Then we will see a noticeable increase in data speeds since leeches like u r forcefully removed from the network.

Yea some torrents. And @ the other haters, I can't afford Comcast and I think my Sprint bill is a little high. So yeah, instead of paying for both, I cancelled Comcast and use Sprint as my only ISP. So of course the usage is high, who gives a ****, if I'm paying for it. Check your usage at home and tell me it isn't high. And "getting a letter from Sprint", this has been my average usage for the past 7 months, so I doubt it.

I think it is something more sinister, tiered data, look here.
Don't think this will affect me... but why would sprint end their unlimited everything when they put so much into it...
I don't think this nesescarily means the end of unlimited data. I think the everything plans will stay intact and these "buckets" will be small for dumb phone users who want smart phones but don't want to jump from a 69.99 family talk and text to a very expensive (in their eyes) 129.99 plus 10 dollars per smart phone.
A single bucket of say 5 gb for 30 would be a god way to update a 4 phone plan with 2 smartphone with out going to a everything data plan with 2 phones that don't use data. This might be a good way to even power your tablet ith internet instead of paying fcor an additional expensive data plan.
Remmber, this little internal document shows almost nothing. Let's not get all up in a bunch over something we don't ANY details on. I know sprint may have their hads up their asses when it comes to bringing in the popular devices with diverse selection, but they have always been pretty inovative on pricing.

+1 I so agree they are just starting to gain on the big 2 and if/when the Tmobile and Att merger happens they will make a killing. I think if they are going to do that they will not do away with unlimited that is there bread and butter.
Care for me to shed some light on this?
SNAP and FDT were scheduled for maintenance from 11:15pm to 10:15am CST. SNAP and FDT are our ordering systems. The Sprint store is down because everyone is effected by this. Customer care, NSS, and Account Services all cannot order any phones during this time.
We should be seeing the site come back up here very shortly. However, about the tiered data, from what I have read and heard from some of my other Sprint connections they are just making new cheaper plans for people who don't want to pay for unlimited 4G data.
And Sprint is doing this because of one reason, LTE. Remember what I said earlier? 80% of the Sprint towers by 2013 will have WiMax and LTE. They are redoing every single tower, one by one.

Not only that but the Author of that article says this almost certainly means... in other words he has no clue and is guessing. Plus Sprint did not comment. I believe others here are correct in assuming it is for those without some type of unlimited data plan and want to share data between other phones in their plan. If anything these "buckets" of sharing may have limits. But just use Bluetooth file share and no network data is used.

At least we know that if data is eventually tiered we won't be charged extra like ATT and VZW customers.
Throttling is by far the lesser of two evils.
What's sad is this wouldn't effect me even if I went over. I average ~256kbps anyway
Well...I wouldn't mind 256k speeds right now! They need to fix some stuffs, ASAP. I'm burnin up the interwebs @60kps on 3G currently.

Let's just hope sprint does not bring anything like this to their main front... This would make me sad

I have yet to hear anything about that, BUT that's not to say it won't happen eventually.. Unfortunately. Ready assured if I hear ANYTHING AT ALL, I will post. If anyone else has some deeper insight, PLEASE LET ME KNOW

I wish I could get 256kbps....at least on a Verizon PRL I can tether and not pull my hair out just to browse a forum or two.

Its possible that they are only going to do it to the prepaid virgin mobile and possibly boost mobile eventually too.
It makes sense.
Encourages you to go the route of going with Sprint itself.

I do the same. I might be a homer, but man, the incentives are just too good when compared to the sheep headers.
If my signals bad for a few, or I can't get wimax... peanuts!
The plans + phones / money can't be beat!

agreed lol doesnt bother me to have bad signal usually only for a minute tops lol deff best phones and plans
I just don't get why everybody is so worried about faster speeds when everybody caps or throttles. (Yes, except for Sprint. So far)
It's like, "Hey, I can hit my cap in 2.5 weeks!" "Oh yeah well I can hit mine in less than 2 weeks!"

Nice, but will they also buyout your contact if you are stuck in one?
You need to switch to a Tmobile 1 plan

Any idea if you already have t-mobile unlimited but want the pixel xl if you can still get a money back?
tmobile is pretty great, but this plan is pretty terrible
Pretty smart of them. They know a Pixel user is a power user, and trying to get them on this horrible plan.
From the fine print, you can only tether at 3g on this plan, compared to 4g/lte in my current tmobile plan. no thanks

John Legere stated on his Twitter that anyone can do it; even if you already have a Pixel AND the T-Mobile One plan. So I don't see why you wouldn't be able to. I confirmed with online reps that I can do it and I have both already. Pretty exciting to get a little back from the big cost. And I love my Pixel XL so it's worth it for me

When you're out and about yes it defaults to 480P, but you can go higher. On Wi-Fi it goes to normal viewing instantly. Seeing as how I do music more than video, it doesn't bother me. Plus I'm STILL paying less on T-Mo than I would be anywhere else. Still doesn't change my camera, screen, speeds, fingerprint scanner, etc.
You may want amazing quality all the time, but there are pros and cons to everything. Go "SYFH" at someone else... you're not discouraging me. :good:

All I see is more options, competition, which is better for us the consumers. :good:
Wonder if Sprint will jump in to the fray too..
AT&T with its 5 year exclusivity on Apple iPhones created a whole new industry. With its monopoly people worked on way to use them on other carriers and mvnos..
Ya...

How much data do you use in a month? I'm just curious; I did my research before switching to the One plans and I only use 10-12 so I was ok... my GF on the other hand is a champ and sometimes hits 20, but even then it's not the full 25.
The plan works for us but I can see how it wouldn't for some others.
I think I might do this. I never watch video on my phone when I'm out and about. Just audio. And I haven't used hotspot in like 2 years. Are there any other gotcha's w/T-Mo One?
Driving down the value of the Pixel in order to get people hooked into a ****ty service... this is only a win for TMobile. Been there done that. I used to travel a lot with two phones from different carriers and no Sprint or TMobile phone over the last decade came anywhere close to the level of quality my Verizon phone had. Cingular which became AT&T was the runner up. What's funny is people justify it by saying they pay less but it's not that much less. Just last year we switched 4 lines to sprint, they paid off all our VZW lines, gave us all new top of the line phones, and gave us twice as much data... but the bill was only 20 bucks a month less and the service was just as bad as it was years ago.... that "within 1 %" commercial is bogus as hell.

Yeah I haven't used tethering in a few years tbh so that's not a factor for me.
For those going over 25GB/month, what do you do on your phones?
I'm assuming the average smart phone user, works a 9 to 5 job and doesn't have time to view their phone all day. Then when they get home, I'm assuming they connect to WiFi.
