I'm coming from using a Nexus S for two years where I did a lot of ROM and kernel flashing. So far, the N4 has been solid and I haven't found a reason to root it or flash a new ROM yet. For those who have rooted and flashed a custom rom, what are your thoughts? Any notable improvements over the stock rom/kernel?
I asked this question here as well.
Pro's of rooting; adaway, better toggles, aosp browser. (watch paranoid android for buttonless navigation)
Cons of rooting; less social life due to flashing things constantly.

I have had also used nexus s for 2 yrs,its a small phone compared to this I remember friends telling me nexus s is a big phone. I am also proud owner of nexus 4 for 2 weeks
My nexus 4 is rooted, before arrived I had all setup on my PC all the drivers, adb, clockwork, it was rooted before I opened the box
Its rooted mainly because of ads, i hate ads, and firewall, and titanium backup, few network tools...
I had flux kernel to try changing colors.
I have stock kernel and rom now and planing to flash AOKP JB4.2 v2 when it comes out.
I would root install a kernel of your choice to get better battery life. I'm on PA with Franco r31 and get over 4 hour of screen time. O. Stock , my screen time was under 3 hours

Go for it. If you like stock ROM then just flash kernel since franco and others have patch the wake lock bug that was killing battery life. I wouldn't go for a few custom ROM out there since it is unstable and could be unpleasant to use. Those ROMs are usually the ones with Linaro optimizations. If you want stock experience with customization, then try AOKP. I'm very impressed with AOKP so far.
I've read on this forum that some well-respected users* hypothesizing that LS8 may actually be just another test rom based on the following things:
- Only released in Spain (FOP) [not sure what the other 2 Chinese releases brought to the table)
- Bootloops/freezes seem to happen even while using the stock rom (this seems to happen to all users eventually)
In my experience, I had one freeze in which I couldn't wake the device. I turned it off, removed the battery,
and it got stuck on boot. Then I turned it off (by holding the power button) and turned it on again and it work. Hours later the same thing happened. I thought it was Jeboo Kernel 1.2's fault, but now that I read this I am uncertain.
So what do you guys think? Are we running a test rom? Did Samsung release it so that we would shut the hell up for a while? Or is it the real deal and it is the best we'll get?
*not mentioning them just to avoid them getting hatemail (actuallly hatePMs) if this proves not to be true

I would say so, why would they only release it in one country? I has to be released only in Spain so they can iron out the rest of the bugs, including the annoying freezing/random turning off ones that kill your battery. Battery drain has to be sorted also, so some call it the final build, but I reckon it will another month or two before we see the true "final" build, hopefully with all the bugs ironed out.
Question. ...are people getting these bugs you talk about if they run the rom bone stock no root? I do believe this was rushed out but not that its another test rom. Staying on my rock solid neat rom 4.0 with siyah for now. Something better is coming....fingers crossed.

Perhaps, but doesn't that make it a test rom by definition?

This dev claims that the first time he installed it (straight from the sammobile odin file) it caused him bugs. I haven't tried the stock, untouched, unrooted version.
I've said before that LS8 feels unfinished.

I don't have any bug or freeze. I'm on LS8 with PhilZ kernel btw.
Until UK's XEU is out, I won't call anything "final".
I have the spanish rom, clean install. Without root, pure stock, odexed, not zipaligned... I had thoose problems using custom kernels and rooting my phone! going back to stock, everything is fine. I think that the problem is that some files are changed, I tried cooking my own rom and it didn't worked (ok a "first try").
I think that we must wait some weeks for good kernels, because the development of a kernel requires time. You can make one that boots in a short amount of time, but one without freezes... It should need some weeks.
No freezes, stucks nor bootloops for me. U'll get the best of it if u actually did total wiping rom & kernel by wiper scripts provided by hawkerpaul's especially if u ran custom rom & kernel before.
And u'll get worth battery savings if u wipe the bloatware by TiB & slimmin down ls8 at ur taste, those will grab out crappy ware from ur ram & kill the batt eater. Disable gnow, syncing at certains need & disabling fast dormancy if ur operator doesnt supported.
Just one so annoyed for me & does anyone has idea why : stock browser didn't run & got FC at custom dpi ??? and pls provide me a link a multi dpi playstore to install at stock recovery, the one I had got unsigned to install.
Please give me some respect for useful answer..

Never had this sort of issues with any ROM before. Sure I had buggy ROMs that crashed apps left and right, but never have I had to worry that forcing a reboot will corrupt the system.
So in my opinion there are two issues here. One being that the phone can freeze in pretty much any app. The other being that holding the volume and power buttons down to force a reboot will ruin the boot sequence somehow.
In some ways, the inevitable freezes bother me the most. On my old 4.0.4 RR AOKP ROM I just to have this issue where scrolling too fast in lists in certain 3rd party apps (like Amazon, Techpowerup, Ebay etc) would freeze the phone and I had to reboot. Well, at least it never broke the OS ...
I got the tip from the official Jelly Bean thread that backing up, wiping and restoring an installation with a boot freeze / loop will in fact bring the system back to life. As to why this works I have no idea.
I also noticed someone talking about possible issues with restoring apps via Titanium Backup, the Android ID and some mismatch. I have never seen the Android ID pop-up in TB though and I assume this is just another developer mantra, like wipe - reinstall - wipe - reinstall. In truth they seem to have no clue what is going on.
Good job Samsung, good job ...
Well. I too think that this is a test release. One for Europe and one for Asia (China releases). We'll have the proof when we will see the next releases in other countries (like UK XEU and/or Nordic NEE). I assume that there will be different PDA's with newer changelog.
But, from my experience, this release is very good. I flashed it from the first day it has been released via Kies and I kept it unrooted since (only disabling some apps). I haven't experienced any of the issues mentioned time and again in this forum and the battery is on par with ICS 4.0.4 LPY for me. 2d10h with 2h screen on.
Maybe I'm lucky or maybe this is the way to go for now (kies and all stock), until the dev and optimizing process matures itself.
Compared to CM10 and LSJ, this ROM have been the the most smoothest and most stable ROM. I haven't encountered any freezes or instability since I installed it last week. However I did loose service last saturday, presumably a RIL crash, but since restarting it have been running problem free for 69 hours.
I have kept it completely stock, but it is rooted through Mobile Odin.
LS8 is not a test rom, Its available via kies so its public final, The fact that its only been released via Spain so far is irrelevant.
All the people moaning about problems are also irrelevant since you will always have some people who have issues after updating to new rom whether its Sammy official or a custom.
LS8 is very stable and very smooth for me.
i never seen such an crappy rom, its unstable.( xwls8)
First, format my card, rom, etc, put xwls8, default kernel.
After 1-2 hours the bugs appears: when i click on almost anything( like any game, my file, es file explorer, stweak, etc), it freeze, then i was force to close and start again the phone, then bootloop.
Or after an force shutdown i stuck at samsung logo.
I tried siyah, dorimanx, etc, wipe cache, etc, etc
Then after 4-5 days of bugs an unlimited shutdown, freezes, etc, i wipe everyting an install 404 xwlq3, stuck at samsung logo, force to install the rom again, etc.
Now im on xwlq3 and dorimanx 5.92 till a new rom appear. This 4.1.2 is not usable.
Previous one, xxlsj, except lag on lock screen, i dont seen serious bugs.
Boy this xwlq3 rom it feel so nice and fast. And no bugs.
If any of you read on siyah , dorimanx, philz, rootbox, etc,etc thread you will see that a lot of us have this problem.

LS8 feels unfinished.
Yes, people may have issues after upgrading but those people are silly and invariably don't know what they're doing. I am however sure that I don't fall in to this category.
Yes, it may be an official release but even so it seems rushed out to appease the masses who were getting sick of waiting.
Yes, it is you lot who're at fault for rushing Sammy in to releasing sub-par, unpolished updates.
I hope you're all happy!

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but is it necessary to change the CSC after flashing this ROM?
I've been using LS8 + Siyah 6.0
Not getting great performance. No hangs/freezes but my battery drains pretty quickly.
When i see that phone restart from an app, like gplay, maps, etc, and it does this every day, i know that it's rom fault. This new phone have this problem. Brand new.
Other note i own, on 4.3 its super stable.
What rom could i put on this note with 4.4.2 to be super stable?
An rom with good battery and quite stable.
Thanks.
I take the risk and update with mobile odin on xxuend3. Seems ok for now. Root, xposed remain, knox 0x0. Old bootloader remain, as well the modem.
If anyone know an better rom then xxuend3 pls post it. Don't want any newer then this, because i need root.

You could update it to the latest NG iterations. But tbh the battery is even worse there.
You can flash custom ROMs that fit your liking in the Android Development forums. I used Xnote and I didn't have random reboots because of the ROM, but because of the kernel.
Compulsion Kernel or ColonelX kernels are what cool kids use nowadays, mainly because of stability.
If I were to ever go back to TW ROMs however, I'd use the S5 ports.

ok, we have a nexus, so we deserve updates and we have them....that's why we bought a nexus no?....
yes....but every update is a hit for our device's performance...I thought that last one would fix performance issues, but is not .
so...I bought one of these to my gf, sure that it would work well, I owned one a year ago and it was very good! nope....is slow, lags, remembers me a 100$ cheap tablet.
I considered to downgrade....is frustrating...what version do you remember as stunning fast, like a nexus should be?
4.1? damn, is too 2012-ish....
4.2? old but at least we have tiles on notification drawer...
4.3? good, some performance goodies, hw vsync...
4.4? I thought this would be the best choice because in theory is optimised for 512mb ram devices too....but was not performing well
5.0? don't say nothing...pff
I also read about f2fs as a revolution, but is not my tablet and my gf uses it for study and I can't take it to test...
thanks for reading and answering
My 2012 Nexus 7 (wifi) I had been on Android 4.4.4 when I updated to Android 5.0 using Wugs nexus root tool kit.
It had been sluggish on Kit Kat, but got more so when I went to Lollipop, even with a full wipe.
After about a week on 5.0 I rolled back to Android 4.3, and have been happy since.
Everyone is having different experiences and mine personally is that 5.0 is running greater for me then 4.4.4. That was with a complete full wipe (including data) when I flashed the image through wugs toolkit. There were initially bouts of lag (waking up screen, lock screen, etc) but the lags pretty much gone bar a few occasions. 5.0.1 will hopefully make the system more stable and not repeat what happened with 4.4.4 because my n7 ran like a pig after that update.

I will try forma the last time a full wipe and factory image, and then downgrade until I'm satisfied.
No words about f2fs?
I have just updated my n7 to Slim rom 5.0.1.
I have been frustrated by not being able to read a simple email using gmail application. Lags, lags, and "gmail is not responding do you want to close it"
I need to have two accounts for me and my wife, so the performance was even more slow.
Now with f2fs it is a rocket. I have installed every toolvI wanted and now also the Godfire game, and I must admit that it was a hit.
So thank you google to slow our machines to force buying the new ones, but my nexus7 from 2012 acts lighning fast now.

No, I don't have it. I just asked is there slim lollipop on f2fs, because I tried rastapop and SleamFreak which are on 5.0 and have f2fs support, but I had problems like rebooting, problem with installing new apps, etc.
So for now, till I get answer from user emmyhi, I back to slimkat KK which run fantastic on our Nexus 7.

Yes, I can agree with you that is really fast, but I had a problem with gapps (downloaded one's give in thread) and I couldn't install Google play store (it wasn't installed with gapps???)
I couldn't resolve my problem with that, and also, even I did clean install I haven't got screen like I first time use this rom. I haven't got possibility to chose language, and everything else. Rom just moved me to homescreen. Maybe this is not for this thread, but, I'll wait some other version of slim on 5.0.

Did you try SlimGapps Normal one from the op link. That worked fine for me. You first flash the Rom. Boot. Go to recovery again. than flash Gapps. Boot. You will get the initialisation screen.
too much beta, I can't take my gf's tablet everytime she has a problem ahahah
I will try an evening every factory image and a kk f2fs rom to see which one performs better...then I'll let you know!
I'm running stock rooted 4.4.4 kitkat on mine with Lean Kernel 4.1. No lag, no issues with apps not working like on 5.0. Good battery life ,watched over 5 hours of movies last night and still had 49% left from a full charge. Standby time is excellent, I've only lost 2% over the last 9 hours.

that stock one with f2fs?
No, not here. Pure stock, rooted 4.4.4 KitKat. Removed a few Google apps I don't use, but still ext4. Lean Kennel really make a difference.
and....after a flashing afternoon....
4.2.2 stock was damn fast....
4.3 stock was even faster and smoother than 4.2.2
4.4 was worse......got better with lean kernel, but wasn't just fast and responsive enough.
the winner is....4.3......that's what I left on my gf's tablet....
everything runs good, apps opening instantly, look much 2013 but google launcher and google keyboard help...
this is my suggestion after my tests. good luck and hope next LP ota will fix some performance issues, not only on this one but for every phone which got slower with this update
Every phone I've owned ran a custom Rom. Since selling my 1p1 for this a month ago, I've been extremely happy. Just rooted and recovery.
Favorite feature is the ability to delay/time my text message with the stock app. Silly but i work shift work shop it's handy.
I use a Windows phone launcher.....I know....but I like it
Stock keyboard is great too however the swipe feature is hit and miss. No issue with speed either. I know everyone wants lp updates but I'll be holding off.
Good job LG.....especially with the way it feels in the hand.
I'm currently the same way, I havent had the need to rom or root this device, LG has done a great job with the software, no lag, fast, great battery life and your right about the stock lg keyboard the swipe feature with it is terrible
Me too, first thing i usually do is slap a custom rom but love stock features like keyboard launcher knock code i like and DT2W / DT2S PS Glad to see a thread where someone ismt complaining love this device

On my D852 I've tried the only fully working custom rom (CloudyG3 rom), And I tried the only custom kernel that exists too (Rin kernel).
From my experience stock rom + stock kernel gives me the smoothest + longest battery by far on the G3.
Which is weird because custom roms + kernels usually give more performance & battery life, But for my D852 everything that currently exists in the custom community is just worse.
For example:
Ktoonsez kernel on my S4 INCREASED my screen on time by 30-50% over stock.
Rin kernel on my G3 DECREASED my screen on time by more than 30% vs stock.
At the current moment there is NO custom kernel for the D852 that has better battery life than stock.
Same here. Just root and xposed for g3 tweaks. Sadly they didn't do a 4.4.4 as L is a no go because of ART.
Same here, ROM-ed my all previous tabs and phone. But this one is beast by itself. Rooted on 1st week and Xposed , Tweak box has all things i need. Love it.
Just the same here... Rooted it with bumped TWRP, installed xposed, tweaksbox and that's it. No custom rom required. I just love this phone for everything. I didnt, however, liked the stock icons for the apps...so i installed Unicon and flashed an icon pack and voila! Tweaked heavily for lollipop look using tweaksbox though. Doesnt want lollipop cos i cant live without xposed framework.. If ART finally gets xposed support, then i will flash the stock update from LG.. Using even the stock launcher and loving it
Ditto

I like LG's UI but I gotta admit that the Stock Android L UI is much better looking than LG's Lollipop update. I feel they didn't add much "Material Design' to it. I thought of flashing CM12 but then I would lose Knock Code and Warranty.
I wish we had something like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...eme-ics-domination-v4-6-4divine12-10-t1334922
Its a full AOSP theme for Samsungs Touchwiz ROM. I think when APKTool starts supporting Lollipop we will get something similar.
