Just received a replacement device from VZ and its already on OE1. All the threads I've seen show this to be unrootable (at the moment). When root techniques come out, I'm curious where they they "are" while working toward a workable solution. Would like to see what progress is being made and if there is any way to know "are we there yet" before we get there.
BTW - Thanks VZ!

It's a yes or no question. The answer is no. You are asking for a maybe, when it's a no. If all the threads say it's unrootable, what makes you think making another thread will change that fact? Read the following if you want to know why:

Root mostly comes from sources off of XDA. Very few attempt solutions in threads on XDA because of the constant "are we there yet?" posts. Most developers work in private chats.

Sorry the internet as you perceive it is 'full'. If you don't like what you see, stop looking at it. If posts such as your reply, which add no value is your concern... stop typing.
Thanks for the 404 links...
My question relates to where are those working on rooting it discussing the subject so I may read more about the progress.

Do you believe something you read on the internet today remains true for all eternity?
Contrary to the evidence you've provided, I believe you are not that dumb... (am i wrong?)
Forums exist for a reason, and things change over time... its like magic.

Dude, get over yourself. OE1 isn't rootable and probably never will be. He gave you the answer. Too bad for you that it's not the answer you're looking for. Stop asking and accept that. All you can do is watch the thread and hope someone decides to work on it (good luck with that). You're asking for an update on something that doesn't exist. There is nowhere to follow development on it, like the MOD said, it's in private chats. Private means you're not invited, mostly because they don't want amateurs asking questions every minute. Just let it go and stop getting unnecessarily defensive when you get info you don't like!:good:

I respond because I like helping people and providing useful contributions as one should try to do when participating in a forum.
You say my post has no value, yet when I say your thread has no value, suddenly I'm an ass? Such hypocrisy. Not only does my post it address all of your questions, your theoretical maybe and your question of remaining the same for all eternity, it does more.
Even if this thread is "useful" to you in terms of information, not only have I provided you with sufficient theorycrafting which makes perfect logical sense (feel free to correct me if I am wrong), but you are looking for updates to a yes or no question, therefore, you are not providing any usefulness to those developers who may (yet very unlikely, see my links) still be working on root. Rather, you are bugging them. Your thread is useless, you only see my post as useless because the permalinks weren't working, which I fixed. Yet you still reply, and obviously didn't read the post because that post answers your question that you asked me after.
Also, you posted in the wrong section, in which, your thread was answered multiple times. Not only did I respond to you with valuable information, I originally said nothing about your faults. The moderator has moved your thread and has given you the same TL;DR answer I gave you. So you are still asking for a maybe to a yes or no question, which is currently no. So explain to me again, who is the one being rude here?

Your last reply is the only one which is slightly helpful... Odd you make snarky comments then get offended when others do the same. I didn't ask if it is rootable ( which would be a yes/no question), I asked something else. Your premise the post required a yes/no answer is a misunderstanding of the question. Clearly you don't know the answer, and that's OK. Why piss and moan about me not liking your snarky comments. If you're going to dish it, be ready to take it.

Snarky comments? Are you talking about yourself? Look at your first response. I've even underlined it for you. Now look at the second underline. That's what you asked. And I answered your question in detail, in those links, which I'm sure you haven't read, because you wouldn't be continuing your redundant discussion. Even the moderator answered your question, and you still are insistent on pursuing a different answer just because you don't like it.

You need to read what the moderator wrote in post #3. I've quoted it below in case you missed it or just have reading comprehension problems. There is nowhere for you to read about the progress of developers working on root for this phone because if it is being worked on, the work is being done in private chat rooms which you won't be able to access. That is because they don't want to be bothered with the exact kind of "Are we there yet?" questions you are asking in this thread. And I will reiterate what has already been written in this thread. It is highly likely no one is working on root for this phone now, and it is highly unlikely anyone will be working on root for this phone anytime in the near future. You may not like the answer you are getting, but it is the only answer to your question at the present time.
This thread is as close as you are going to get to what you are asking for:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...lausible-to-jtag-to-rewrite-unlocked-t3184952
And the OP in that thread is technically not working on root for the phone, just an experimental and risky thought on a way to bypass the locked bootloader.

He likes ignoring facts too, but I answered this in his other thread about petitioning for the FCC to unlock the bootloader:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62406501&postcount=4
or as quoted here:

Which would nullify his entire thread of him trying to brick to unlock the bootloader.
Considering he's having "issues" bricking the phone... he doesn't have enough knowledge, just free time on his hands. He's probably going to just waste time soft bricking his phone.
But there's a simple logical explanation. If you have to unlock the bootloader to write unsigned code, i.e. a bootloader/custom rom, how would writing an unlocked bootloader work? That's like asking, how do you get the key to unlock a safe (if the key is inside the safe) so you can get your money? Replace a safe with an unlocked one? What happened to the money? Edit: on second thought, this is a slightly bad analogy, replacing the safe would be like getting the unlocked dev edition, but it still should get the point across.
He may as well just try flashing all the developer edition roms to his non dev phone (Note to new people: DO NOT do this), because those are all "unlocked firmware", exactly what he's trying to do.
He seems bent on arguing semantics, which is why I went back and forth with him but eventually stopped in his petition thread. But he's not rude like this guy, he just has a mindset that says, this is what I feel the answer should be, so it should work no matter what.

hello,
how would I go about setting up HTC Home to shortcut to PocketCM for SMS instead of the default wm6.1 SMS app?
I have dcd 2.3.2 installed. I still like the HTC Home plugin and it works very well for my needs, however it is a pain in the arse that the shortcut "notification" points to my old app. Not sure if I am explaining this correctly. On the HTC Home plugin, there is the Email notification, the SMS notification and the Missed Calls notification right under the clock. The middle "number" points to the SMS app, I want to change this to point to PocketCM. And yes I have the option unchecked in pocketcm to "use old application for sms".
Thanks.

This has been discussed countless times on this forum. Please use search at the top of this page. Try keywords "HTC SMS", "HTC HOME SMS" or any others you can think of. When you find the thread that best fits, and there are a few, post your question there please.

If I did that, then every time you need something you didn't want to spend more than a few moments looking for you would just simply start a new thread and ask a question. It would be your trained response. Thats not acceptable here. The answer is on this site. It may or may not be the one you want but I am not willing to give it to you. You must search for it. I know it exists because I searched for it.
Thanks

Father?!? Is that you...?!?
Try checking the links next time; even though the results don't specifically say "PocketCM SMS" or whatever in them, they are related. I searched "HTC HOME SMS" and the 3rd, 4th, and 5th results are all the same request that you have, except with different programs.
No harm done, though, now you know.

OK Curious G... now that you've gone against your own statements by perpetuating an extraneous thread. Yes I did just perouse some of your previous posts and I may add that early on you did have a few less than stellar posts of your own. Dont forget that we were all once noobs and needed a little guidance. If everyone that achieved Sr.Member status stopped answering arsenine questions then there would be no new development and we'd all still be using locked phones with only the junk the carriers put on them.
In any case getting back on toppic.
I do believe that the question was asked, if the SMS button on HTC Home could be redirected to use another application.
The short answer is NO it can not. It is hard coded into the signed DLL file. There is a thread where someone was attemting to HEX edit the DLL file to redirect the functions. They had minor success but nothing that would enable what you and many other are looking for. The other problem was that since the app is signed, altering it would break the signing and result in the app not functioning.
This concludes our special report.
We now return you to the previously scheduled flaming.

I told him in the second post that the answer may or may not be to his liking. I already new the answer was no. I didn't want him to have that answer here becuase he would and will just continue to post questions as he sees fit instead of being conditioned into deep searching first.
Ah.. I see. It was learned behavior. As a noob you were repeatedly instructed to search for your own answers and as such you propogate the cycle by disceminating the same attitudes toward other noobs.
I also see you contradict yourself within the same sentence by stating that you care nothing of the status indicators yet call out that I am still just a noob. While yes my post count is extreemly low and my join date is October of last year. I have in fact been coming to these forums for quite a long time and on average spend hours a day reading the posts. On average I rarely post and typically find my own answers. So while in title I am still classified as a noob I would in fact be nothing close to noobish.
With respect to "it is about the expectation of people to be their personal answering service in a hacking and development forum."
Definitions of forum:
a public meeting or assembly for open discussion
a public facility to meet for open discussion
I do believe that by expecting people to come here and answer their own questions that would completely undermine the definition of forum. As such this would mean that the devs should not share the information that they have gained and tell everyone to go find the answers themselves.
Some forum that would be. Post after post of go search for the answer.. Oh wait. No one ever shared the answer therfore there is nothing to search for.
Finally. If you already knew the answer, then would it have just not been simpler to post NO IT CAN NOT and have been done with this?
As for
"I didn't want him to have that answer here becuase he would and will just continue to post questions as he sees fit instead of being conditioned into deep searching first. "
I guess I missed the part in the forum agreement, when I signed up, that stated any question can be asked yet Curious Gerorge reserves the right to determine if you deserve the answer.

almost every thread i've clicked on in the past few weeks has a response from Curious George saying "try the search button". did you get all 350 posts by repeating this same response to every thread you've chimed in on? its really annoying. almost annoying as it is for you to see these "reposts". so just calm down dude. its not that big of a deal

Actually, they are are to make an honest attempt at answering their own questions. That is done by searching. In this Forum the developers post programs and support is provided by both they and other members who may be able to lend a helping hand on that topic in that thread. Others may lend a suggestion towards a development idea but only after it has been researched to confirm they are not double posting. As for the dictionary definition you have quoted; well, for here, your just plain wrong. Probably has to do with that fact that you are noob and haven't read the forum rules yourself. This forum has a clear policy stating a member of any calibur should detail search before they post.

Yes, pay it forward by directing people to post were they should and answer their question there. As to eliminate the excessive amount of repeat threading that occurs in this forum of this site.
Here is an attempt at my ability to impress myself with big words, HeyCrop, Your feable attempt to participate in any intelligent coversation only goes to exagerate your already pathetic lack of mental ability.

None of the above. I'm an Integration Engineer for one of the leading global companies in component and systems manufacturing and distribution. My primary task is to write assembly/configuration documentation for hardware, software and various OS's for our production lines.
I basically get handed a pile of components with details on how a particular customer needs the system to function etc. I then build, configure and document it so that it can be reproduced hundreds or thousands of times without error.

Save yourself the embarrassment and leave the forums now.
Use the search tool or go to the Android Development.
Have you not read the thread about respecting all members?
You owe him an apology and a helpful hand to direct him to the right path.

I don't owe anyone an apology.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=438
Read the FIRST item in post 2.
Telling him to leave isn't respecting him...
1. Search before posting
Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news.
2. Be polite and respect your fellow xda-dev user.
There is no need for cursing, flaming, racism or personal attacks. There are a lot of different nationalities on this forum all with different cultures, this means that no matter what you're like, you'll have to adjust to people that are most definitely not like you. It will gain you a lot of respect if you help to keep the peace. It's disrespectful and therefore not permitted to create Alias Member names in an attempt to deceive others.
3. Post only using a clear subject and message.
You're most likely to receive a helpful answer to your question if you use a short subject title that describes your problem and a message that explains in detail what your problem is and what you've tried to solve it.
4. Use the English language.
We understand that with all the different nationalities not everyone speaks English well, but please try. If you're really unable to post in English use an online translator, You're free to include your original message in your own language below the English translation.
5. Post a message only once.
As a large forum we don't need unnecessary clutter, You're free to edit your message as you like, so if you do not receive an answer revisit your message and see if you can describe your problem better. Not everyone is online at the same time, it might take a while before you receive an answer.
6. Do not post warez.
If a piece of software requires you to pay to use it, either pay or find your cracks and serials somewhere else. We do not accept warez nor do we permit any member to promote or describe ways in which Warez, cracks, serial codes or other means of avoiding payment, can be obtained.
7. Do not spam.
If you wish to advertise a product, contact us we provide ads. But do not post it in the forums, it will be removed and you're likely to receive a ban.
You are however allowed to sell used goods like your own device, parts of your device or accessories for your device in the marketplace forum, please read the rules there before posting. (This rule includes signatures, if you use a signature it will appear in your post)
8. Donations.
We appreciate all donations to xda-developers.com, it keeps our forum online and well maintained. As a user you're allowed to ask for donations in your signature as a thank you for your hard work. However donations up front are not allowed, this forum is about sharing, not about getting paid to do something, that's what your job is for.
9. Don't get us in trouble.
Don't post copyrighted materials or do other things that will obviously lead to legal trouble. If you wouldn't do it on your own homepage, you probably don't want to do it here either. This does not mean we agree with everything the software piracy lobby try to impose on us, it simply means you cannot break any laws here, since we'll end up dealing with legal hassle caused by you. Please use common sense: respect the forum, its users, and those that write great code.
10. Help others if you can.
If you see posts from others where you can help out, please do. This place exists because people are helping each other, and even if you are relatively new to the matter, there's probably already quite a few people newer than you that would benefit from what you've learned. Don't be shy.

Regardless, you should eat your own advice. Just sayin. Respecting others in turn lets them respect you...
It's more along the lines of where it says I have to apologize.
Honestly - this post is better off locked or removed, as it is clearly off topic and is leading to flaming and unnecessary disputes.
Yay, another thread that has nothing to do with the OP.
I'm not flaming. I was at first curious to why you felt the need to be rude to him when he asked you a question when instead, you could have directed the way for him and it would have been solved.
You guide me to read the rules and yet, it seems like you yourself have not quite understood them.
Now I don't mean any disrespect in any shape or form. I'm just trying to get the noobs back by getting you/everyone to be a little bit more nice around here.
There is no need for the comment, you should leave the forums now.
What gives you the right to tell me to read the rules when you yourself don't follow them? It doesn't make any sense.
Coming from mmus.us, I am disappointed to come to this. Expecting the help and kindness I received from there was obviously a mistake.
To all members who are reading, I am sorry for any offense taken from this, but the disrespect given within these forums is out of hand at times and I feel the need to speak up...

It depends on which direction you want to take mostly.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=448
this is where all G1/DREAM ROMs reside and it's up to you to choose which one.
There are also guides that will teach you how to root, unroot, etc...
I personally chose CyanogenMOD for the simple fact that it was really easy to get everything setup and done.
If CyanogenMod is the road you want to take, then go here
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Main_Page
This wiki will guide you through the ENTIRE process and them some.
The odds of you messing anything up are really slim with this road.
Hope this helps you after all the wait...

Don't take me personally, but I've seen a lot of people that come here, register, post their main question that has been answered a million times, and then just leave.
If they actually put the effort into searching for the solution, as opposed to having someone hold their finger, the "person" will learn a lot more.
My "harshness" was brought about my Mr. 1 post - figuring that he's just like the rest. If I'm wrong, and he turns out to be the next moderator, fine...
But chances are - he won't.
You have every right to speak up, after all it's on online forum. There is no one stopping you, or impeding on your right to speak - so long as it follows the rules.
Now, in response to your post of "assistance" - there have been issues with DRD20 being rooted. Again, from searching, you'll see that the SG versions are having some difficulty being rooted from stock 1.6
It seems as if the "Gold Card" method has to be used to solve the DRD20 issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=498142&highlight=drd20&page=2
Well thank you and this is all understandable. I see your point and agree. But with the experience I have from mmus, my way of thinking has changed.
I try to help even if it is a 1 post member because if I show the effort to help, it makes me look better and I might even learn something new in the process as well.

I have no direct experience with MMUS, so I cannot account for that; however - I'm sure you had your "thinking changed." Each forum (as we can agree) helps to educate about something, whether that be old news or something new.
In fact, I'll be taking a look on those forums as well.

Put that in the perspective of the OP. Referring back to 2 posts above, the OP [most likely] put minimal effort into finding a solution. If he "didn't do anything about it," "how will [he] know."

I see your point and it is one that has been made many times over on this forum. I know. At one point in time, I also had a hard time finding the search button on the top bar of almost every forum I went to. I also, didn't like to do an "endless" scrolldown of the topics. But as every other high posting member, I learned.
It is frustrating to deal with, I know. But guidance only takes about 5 mins max to type out and then you move on to the next thread.
Sorry for the off-subject conversation here...
Can anyone explain what causes a galaxy to have a MF3 firmware. Mine has that at the end of the CSC codes and the other two codes in that list. It seems that specific coding in y firmware is preventing me from getting the Jellybeans 4.3 update from AT&t (THE MK2.) i CANNOT GET IT VIA kIES OR VIA ota. Can anyone offer some insight into this or point me to somewhere I can get some info regarding it. I'd also like to know if there's a [safe] fix for this or a way to change the firmware [without rooting it]. Just need some into. Thanks.

Scott, are you a moderator here? Your red bold statement in your signature is a little condescending. If someone does in fact read the pinned threads first, but doesn't understand them, they can't ask for help according to your logic. You are demanding they read and understand before asking for help. If everyone understood everything we wouldn't need forums would we. Take a chill pill dude.

The answer was sufficient and without any form of attitude or condescending tone. You have no room to be telling people what to do.
If the OP does not understand what they are reading, they need to make it obvious. From reading the OP, they are not doing the research. It is pretty obvious. I have been here long enough, I am experienced enough and have experienced enough to know when someone is not helping themselves.
Until you are more than just a junior member, I suggest you not tell people to chill when they do not provoke any member and provide the correct answer.

You should read the rules YOU agreed to when you signed up. If you don't like it, take it up with the site Administrator.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=263
All members ARE expected to read and search before making posts. Providing people with the information I posted is the correct thing to do as ALL people are expected to read the "Pinned" threads before asking questions that have already been answered several times. The answers (and many more) are there. If you don't like it, maybe you should start another development forum with your own rules? And I personally don't care if you think repeating the forum rules is "condescending. People like yourself are part of the problem because you don't direct people to the information they need (and should have already read) instead you "question" those that do so, Replying to people like you is a waste of time, but, unfortunately, it has to be done from time to time so people can see the correct way of doing things. Have a good day.

I read the rules back in 2010 when I signed up. I have no problem with the forum rules being repeated in signatures, I think it's fine for those who wish to do so. Modified forum rules in signatures, is another story. This becomes an interpretation of the rules. As far as me being part of some problem, you already directed the OP to the pinned topics, should I have concurred in my post as well? I simply asked you if you were a moderator and thought your signature was poorly worded thus giving it a condescending undertone. I may have gone overboard telling you to take a chill pill which I would retract, but after you suggesting that I start another development forum, and that people like me are a waste of time I am not so sure now. I guess I am more of a rule 10 guy then a rule 1 guy.

What scott is saying is that, this question you presented has been asked not 50 times, but 100 times, and starting another thread with a repeated question is not needed, he gave you the location to read on the subject, so if you have questions then it should be addressed within that thread, that is the whole reason they were created. And 99% of your answers have been answered already. Not to direct this at you, but alot of people just start a thread to get a quick answer to which they are to lazy to read and see that the answers are there already.
His signature is just a reminder to people that, hey, look before you ask.
I see nothing wrong with Scotts answer.

The issue wasn't his answer it's his signature. I sort of feel the same way. I don't even see a problem with the text, bit of an a hole move to have it huge and in red. Especially since it shows up on all his posts. So even following a thread that is going good, if he is actively posting you have to see it every few posts for no reason. It jumps out at you too. As the first guy mentioned it would be different if he was a mod, but just some user, no matter how long they have been or how active they are, to not only take it upon themselves to be so serious about it, but to shove it in everyones face everywhere because the huge red text just jumps out on a page, is taking it a bit to far.

I tried it and it will not work as @CyanideHD already said. The phone will just bootloop because the rooted kernel is for 6.0 and not 7.
Since it is a beta, it wouldn't surprise me if there is another engineering kernel available, just not leaked yet. I wonder how the original was found.

Many people told you and explained to you in the Nougat beta threads that it will not work yet you continued to ask when you didn't get the answer you wanted. You were no longer asking a legitimate question when you ignored the answers that you didn't want to hear and kept asking anyway. There might not be much to talk about on these boards but when you ask the same question over and over even after hearing the answer it really is just unnecessary. No one was trolling you, no one was lying to you and no one was hiding any information from you.
It sincerely boggles my mind that you ignored everyone who said it wouldn't work in the other threads. I wish there was a way to achieve root on Nougat but currently there is not and until someone far more capable develops a way, there will not be one. Continuing to ask about the engineering kernel will not help, neither will ignoring other people who are more knowledgeable than us on the subject.
You have been told multiple times that it will not work and that there is no root method for Nougat. Getting upset and offensive towards others will not help you by any means so please wait patiently as the rest of us are.
Also, Nougat is currently in closed beta. Until it is released there is almost 0 chance there will be a root for it. This thread would be more useful after it has released fully.
I wonder if the same vulnerability is in the nougat beta kernel, if so I wonder if that could be used for root on nougat. I doubt it is still available but worth a shot for those already on the beta.
I didn't get a response in the other thread so I started my own, quit being a baby about it.

To be fair, you got several responses in the nougat thread. And if you didn't see them, its because you didn't read...
There is nothing wrong with asking questions, and its encouraged once you've attempted a brief search to make sure the question hasn't already been asked and answered. However, to ask a question several times in a thread, have that question answered by several people then start a new thread asking that SAME question, is looked down upon and for good reason. Just because you didn't get the answer you wanted to hear doesn't mean your question wasn't answered...
You've been around longer than I have, figured you'd know this.
Tell me kind sir, why would I want to hear what I want to hear? So I can get the worst possible outcome? I was asking TO hear an answer. I apologize that I didn't see the response, or maybe didn't validate someone who said 'wont work' with a post count of 5.

Who made you ruler of XDA? He who is also infamous for criticizing. He who believes he is above the rules, blames others for his troubles, and continues to be disrespectful to users, devs and moderators. He who holds the record for bans both on XDA and on telegram. He who can't read a thread without posting some worthless comment in it.
runninghamster has the freedom to ask and he has the freedom not to post an answer. This does not break any rules. You preach about the freedom to say what you want all of the time, so you should be able to understand that. Even though the things you choose to say are against the rules and get you banned.
If you feel you could find the answer, or know the answer, then be helpful and post a link or give advice. Your post does nothing. Only trying to start another one of your meaningless fights that you have quite the reputation of doing.
