android not detecting internal storage free space correctly - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hay people,
so, today my friend gaved me his phone and asked me to install him facebook application on the phone, because he faild to install it.
so, i thought what an easy task, but it turns out i can not make it work at all.
so, he has samsung galaxy s4 (model: GT-I9500).
he has sd card which is 16 gb large, and his phone has 16 gb of installed storage. (at least phone specifications say so).
i tried to install facebook but i got the error.
the problem is that it says that there is no enouff storage available, and google play fails to download application.
so i went to the settings and some wery odd numbers i found.
so, it turns out that storage section of settings shows that there are three different storages.
first one is sd card.
for sd card it shows that it has 16.53 gb capacity, and that 13.97 gb is free.
second one is internal storage:
it shows that internal storage has 16gb capacity, from whitch (believe it or not) 15.91 gb is free.
furtermore, what is also strange is that it shows that there is third storage called "phone storage", and it shows that this storage has capacity of only 17.84 mb, and that 17.75 mb is free. but mb not gb.
what is even stranger, if i go to applications section of settings to see installed apps it shows that available space for apps is 170 mb from witch about 40mb is free.
i mean wtf, how is that possible?
phone has 16 gb of internal storage, and almost all is empty, there are no installed applications except for built in ones, and still it looks like it lacks free space.
it almost looks like it looks at this "phone storage" for available space to install.
what is that "phone storage" at all?
why is only 17mb large?
and how to make android detect that there is 15.93 gb of internal storage available?
instead android shows that low space icon in status bar and every 5 minuts displays popup saying "internal storage is full".
please help to solve this.
why those 15.93 gb are not available for applications?
also, phone has an option to choose where to install applications.
and no matter what i choose (sd card or internal storage) it says there is no enough storage available.
please help.
i really want to fix his phone, because if i do not, you know, he would think that i do not know how to install facebook app.
any help?
how to solve this?
is this normal?
is there any system reserved memory or something?
if this is normal, than can someone explain why, what is all that free memory used for?
for far as i concern, i am down with ideas only to reset phone. but, i am hoping there is some better solutions.
for anyone who reply, thanx!

He has a significant issue with storage. The internal storage should have about 6GB used by the system with about 9GB free. There should not be a "phone storage" drive. The device may need to be repartitioned to correct this, using a PIT file, the correct firmware for your device, and Odin.

[Q] Note 3 Miscellaneous Files taking up 29GB - rooted Jelly Beans Rom

Hello,
I've done a big search to solve this issue, but none that helped. I just bought a Note 3 32GB version Verizon, and I rooted it immediately and added Jelly Beans Build 4. I've barely put anything into internal memory. I look at the Storage and it says I have 29GB used up as Miscellaneous Files. (To which I clicked on and it at most lists 50mb of miscellaneous files) I then used DiskUsage and scanned and saw that my internal SD card only has 2493 MB of storage total. There's some type of issue with it that doesn't allow me to use up all of my 32 GB of internal memory. Could it be the root or rom preventing it?
How do I fix this?
Now that I think about it deeper. I did use Safestrap to root it and I had to create my own partition. Could it be the fact that I just created the partition with the default settings (as in the amount of memory used)? Should I have raised this to 32gb? I think Default was 2.5GB.
To further try to solve this issue, is there a way to increase the amount of data allocated to this partition? Or is there a way to copy everything in this partition to a new one that I would create at 32GB? I would rather not have to restart and redownload everything again, etc.

Your problem seems to be that you need to read a little more - you are not in the correct forum, this is NOT the Verizon Note 3 forum!
Oh I'm sorry, I Thought this was a general Note 3 forum. And I thought this would be a general Note 3 issue, but I guess it seems to be a rooted and ROM issue.
Your search failed you. Put the rom in the stock slot and your memory readings will be correct. Otherwise, ignore them.

Safestrap does not show your free space correctly, it has to do with the way Safestrap creates its partitions. If you use a file browser or switch to your stock ROM you will be able to see the correct amount of space. If you want to maximize your free space and if you want everything to show correctly the only way to do it is to flash the ROM to your STOCK slot. There have been numerous posts about this and I advise you search a little more. Anyways, it isn't anything abnormal and it's perfectly fine. Not something to worry about.

[Q] Question about phone memory

Hello everyone,
I put my questions in bold so they're easier to find and address, I'm not trying to shout.
So, I'm getting ready to create a rom slot using Safestrap but when trying to free up memory for a new slot, I'm having trouble understanding where some of my memory went.
I opened up the application manager to view the usage and it shows I have 5.42 GB of space available (see Phone Memory attachment).
This seems to be consistent as when viewing the available memory in windows, it shows I have 5.41 GB of 9.61 GB free (see PC Memory Analysis attachment).
So the first question is where did 6.39 GB of my 16 GB device go to get down to only 9.61 GB left (I can only assume Android's OS)?
I went into explorer to find out what's taking up all the space and what I can remove but when I set my computer to read all hidden files, selected all the folders and then click properties, it can only seem to find 1.5GB of data on there rather than the 4.2 GB (9.61GB total - 5.41GB left over - 1.5 GB found on the folder) it says I'm using (see Explorer Analysis).
Any idea what happened to this 2.7 GB or so of data?
Also, does anyone know the minimum space I should reserve on the internal memory for the phone to operate or is that already considered in the 7 GB or so of Android data? I know when you run out of disk space on the OS partition of a hard drive, you see a significant speed decrease and I want to make sure I don't do the same on my phone. If I can fully fill up the disk space without any performance decrease, that works too.
Thanks, everyone!

[Q] Missing Internal Storage

I seem to have lost some of the little 16gb's I had. seems like after pressing security mode I am only showing 10.3GM of internal memory. Anyone know what up with this? I have tried searching the forum, but getting error msg's trying to find the answer....
I do have on safestrap, but think this happened befor i installed it. not 100% sure.
10.3GM or 10.3GB? And that seems normal you don't get to use ALL 16GB. The "lost" space is reserved for system
are you referring to "private mode" with the security mode you are talking about? yeah it seems to format a little over 4GB for the "private" encrypted folder, I recently rooted and installed cyanogen and now I seem to have lost that 4GB completely it only shows 11.3gb of total internal memory. If you turn private mode on and plug into a computer does it show 4GB approximately for private and the other 11.x for internal storage? trying to find out if I wipe everything in twrp if I'll brick my phone or be able to reformat internal storage to one partition and have all 16 back minus the little bit that gets eaten up but should still be 14.5 15gb of total storage space granted it wont all be available.

Internal storage way more full than it should be?

Hey I have a weird issue with my internal storage lately and cant figure out what the issue is or find anything really online about it.
I have a Galaxy S5 with Android 5.0. The problem right now is, that im having way more internal storage occupied than it should. If im connecting my phone to the PC, it says that 2,04 GB are free from 11,6 GB (so around 9 should be full). This is ridiculous though, as currently I only have a few apps installed and some fotos. The weird thing also is, if I copy all the files to my computer, its only 101 MB ??!? When im looking in the storage menu, it says that 9 GB are from applications (also listing internal ones), but how can this be? Is there anyone having a fix or a link where this was already described maybe?
did you try emptying the cache?

If it says 9GB is taken from apps, then find out which ones are using up most of the room and remove them...
Android itself takes up a fair whack, along with touchwiz and bloatware cr4p
Okay I managed to remove some of the data from google services apps, like chrome and maps, but actually a phone restart after that freed a lot of internal storage again. I cant remember having this happen like that before.

You only can copy 101MB from your phone due to file name restrictions...the file path is too long somehwhere in the Android folder app data, use smart switch to backup and it'll backup all used space (idk about app data)

Storage Space Running Out Bug - Old AC8277

I have an old AC8277 Head Unit I got from Panlelo with 1 GB of Ram and 16 GB of storage. It is running Android 5.1. It will periodically tell me I am running out of storage space, even though the storage stats show several GB free. I used the Disk Usage app and it seems to show 2 partitions from there:
Storage Card
/vendor
As soon as my "Storage Card" partition goes above 1 GB, it seems to throw the Storage Space Running Out error.
There was a 3rd party Navigation app on the device I wasn't using and tried deleting that 4 GB folder to see if that would help, but the error remained. Only after I uninstalled a few applications that were in the "Storage Card" did the error go away and the used storage there was less than 1 GB.
I previously tried a factory reset per the vendors advice but the problem came back after some time.
What would be the easiest way to fix this issue outside of deleting apps? Ideally I'd like to be able to keep over 1 GB of apps on this device and I can't understand why this limit is in place.
