[Unlimited Data] Did you know? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 General

Did you know that there is basically no more alternate upgrade for unlimited data users? I called into VZW to buy a new device on one of my three lines. My line has the unlimited data, my others do not. I was told that I would lose my unlimited data if I bought a device not at retail price. Of course I said "I know that on my line, but i want to on another line." i was then shocked to hear that VZW has a system where it can see when a device was purchased , if from them, and how it was purchased. If the system sees that a device was purchased on a 2 year or device payment plan, and then transferred to another line, that line will lose unlimited data without notice. Again, this surprised the heck out of me. Seems really shady. I called in a second time and it was confirmed to me again. What are YOUR thoughts on this? Even if you are not on an unlimited data, what are your thoughts from a customer perspective? I do not know by the way if this also applies to data promotions back in the day like my mom has. Personally the lollipop update kinda screwed my phone, so i was going to go S6 Edge+. Thanks guys.

I've been on unlimited for years and I've never ever purchased a phone from verizon. That's the way to get rid of your unlimited is you purchase a phone from verizon I've always bought mine outright from samsung and I use my sims card from my old phone. With no problems

Yeah, like i said your route works. But for people who like to use other lines to get a new phone, they can not.

Thanks form the heads up

You should never, ever involve Verizon if you're going to do something like that. Follow the methods on Slickdeals to get a subsidized phone upgrade if you are on unlimited data.
http://slickdeals.net/f/7743625-ver...year-data-plan-on-a-nationwide-basic-line?v=1
Verizon doesn't give a crap as long as you don't draw unnecessary attention to yourself, and yes going to the store and blabbing about trying to upgrade another line on your account to use on your unlimited data line is drawing unnecessary attention to yourself.

I think it's BS and borderline scamming/illegal.
If you are purchasing it on another line it makes absolutely no difference what line it is used on or how it is used as long as it's still on your lines and activated. And it is none of their business.
Whether or not you switch it to the unlimited data line or just keep it on the others the phone and lines are still being paid for and used just the same.
IN FACT! It's only helping them. Because if you could not do that then all those who want to keep the unlimited data will just buy a phone outside of Verizon altogether. But you are buying from them.
But they are so dead set on forcing everyone off the unlimited data that they are too stupid to realize they are just ruining it both ways with a double edged sword.
They are being so stupid that I was dead set on opening a line with them as soon as I could because where I live I go from full LTE with Verizon to spotty Att....in my home...to dead zone basically with Sprint.
Because of the Bootloader thing and no root if I decide on the Note 5....I'll be getting sprint most likely with some super strong signal boosters in my windows.

I'll wait for next nexus and then I'll decide what to do. If it has vzw radios I'll cop that. If not then I don't know what I'll do. Wait and see I guess.

I just did that last year without issue.

That can't be true. If it was true, you'll loose your unlimited data If you bought a used phone that the original owner purchased on contract.

I ordered an S6 on a tiered line and after activating it on said tiered line and the swapped in the SIM from a unlimited data line and had zero issues. Just don't try a subsidized upgrade on an UL line and you'll be fine.

I agree.
I just did an line transfer upgrade last week without any problem. I have 5 lines four with unlimited data and one with 2gb. I always transfer the upgrades to the 2gb line, activate, then swap phones around. Never had a problem. I always just do everything online and never call Verizon.

Straight talk can use Verizon towers. $45 a month with 5GB of LTE and unlimited 2G after that. That's what I use, and it's been fantastic

Does straight talk use Sim cards now for Verizon?
Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk

@jr_718 yeah it just happened this year. The activation pack at wally comes with all 4 carriers

Ok thanks..had them before I switched..they didn't have Sim that's why I switched to
Back to vzw...am wondering if the only phones that would work specifically for vzw on straight talk is the Verizon phones or any other phones..thanks again
Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk

@jr_718 Activation pack is a Sim pack with all 4 Sims. We've got lte now. I couldn't use my OPO with vzw ST, so I think it must be a vzw phone

Yeah I think so too...CDMA/ GSM combo jumbo crap..anyways thanks again

That's something I hope galena in the future. Phones have all or nearly all gsm and cdma frequencies. Of course the verizon ones are somewhat there, but that doesn't help us much since they are the ones with the worst bootloader issues

How I learned to stop worrying and love the Total Equipment Coverage
Just adding my two cents/story. I've been on UDP for almost 11 years, I think? Never did an upgrade, on any of my 4 lines, ever. Always bought phones from other people after checking the blacklist.
Probably almost as long as I've been a Verizon Wireless customer. I pay for the Total equipment coverage so if anything goes wrong with my phone (even if it's after the 1 year since release of a new device) they replace it with the deductible, or within the 1 year, replace it free. This actually included phones that have been reported as stolen AFTER I activated them on my account (cragislist, damn you!)
If you're a little tech savvy like me and you want the newest (within a few months) phone that comes out, here's what I did to get my note 4. YMMV, of course.
I bought a water damaged note 4 on ebay for $200 about 2 months after it's release, had to purchase a new battery and s-pen from samsung's store.
After putting in the battery, nothing, black screen, but it did play the startup jingle. Dismantled it and dried it out, mobo had the water sensor tripped, soaked it in isopropyl overnight, let it air dry.
Rice is useless for water damage, it's no better than leaving it out to dry since rice will do nothing to remove trapped water molecules under BGA chips, etc.
Want to get it actually dry? wrap it loosely in aluminum foil with a few top cuts and toaster oven it at 175deg. I use a k-type thermocouple to fine-tune the toaster oven temps, but that's just me being me, since the oven held its temps perfectly fine.
Anyway, after getting the mobo clean, we had a working picture and touch, I activate the phone and make the required 1 minute phone call to bind it to my account (required by verizon to consider it activated). The screen had some water stains, but surprisingly you can actually boil SAMOLED screens with no damage (couldn't believe it until I tried it) which drove out all the water spots as it cooled and the steam evaporated and since the water stays a balmy 212, no electronics damage either.
This also has a good use for separating samsung screens from the frames (after removing the mobo of course) I don't think any of the screens since the S3 are capable of separating the digitizer from the top glass, although I may be wrong, nothing bad happened on the note4 except for the pen layer peeling back a little, but it was still electrically intact (pen works fine, of course)
So a little RTV silicone later, mint condition fully functional note 4. Total expenditure for a phone that retails at $600? .... $255 and a couple hours of time.
If any of the process had failed after the test call, re-assemble, pay the deductible and get a new phone. I think it would have been $150 for the deductible making the phone cost $400, still cheaper than new, and no upgrade BS.

I've had unlimited data since the beginning and have never had a problem getting the latest phone. Of course I'm on the family plan so all you have to do is use the upgrade on the non unlimited data phone or dumb phone then switch the numbers before activating. VZW Customer Service each time is well aware what I"m doing but have never given me problem. You can even do it online without even talking to a VZW rep, I've done that too. Yes, follow the slickdeals thread for details how to do all this.

Wow, how lucky am I

Long story short, I changed my cellphone to N1 last month from my old Nokia 5800 XM with the unlimited $15 data plan. Not surprisingly, they forced the $25 dollars smartphone data plan on me soon after I swapped the sim card.
But considering I use wifi mainly on my phone, I called today to downgrade my data plan to the $15 200mb tier as the option doesn't show up in my online account feature section. And apparently, the lady on the phone doesn't know her business too much. She asked me what phone model I was using several times and asked me if it's a smart phone. I had to articulate word by word "google. nexus. one." to her so she could put it down. Before that, she just assumed I was using an iPhone, lol. And also she sounded quite confused about the data plans AT&T has. After some long wait on hold, she cheerfully told me she successfully changed my data plan to $15. So I logged into my account and surprisingly found out the feature of my data plan is:
Data Unlimited: Quick Messaging/Basic Phones
AT&T Recommends $15.00 N/A Unlimited Current
Didn't the honest me just tell her that I was using a nexus one and it's a smart phone? I guess she really doesn't know too much about phone tech even though she works as a customer service rep for AT&T. But I don't blame her for that. Well, even though if somehow in the future they find out there's some mistake and revoke the change, I wouldn't mind because I don't use that much 3g data anyway.
I wouldn't go out of my way, but if that force you to upgrade or realize the error just know it's the correct charge.
Wow you got an awesome plan that is hard to get anymore. Nice
Not a bad plan! Hopefully it will last...
yea i hope it lasts for you too. hey guys on a side note. is that whole "Google charing you on your phone bill" option in place already? because im buying apps and oddly enough, my AT&T bill is coming up $10-$40 dollars extra for the past 3 months
also....since we both got AT&T.....you happen to have her rep number? i wanna call and try to get her so i can try my luck with her
Oh everyone, I guess I spoke too soon. This morning I found out they changed my plan to $25 again. I guess it's the system automation.
I called them again and this time the Guy there apparently know I'm using a HTC phone. But still he couldn't change my plan as he needed me to call from another phone to get the IMEI number. I guess I'll try to call again then.

Yeah that's what has been happening to everyone else. The system automatically sweeps accounts and puts the correct data plan. Oh well.

Not if you're on an old att "blue" plan
* Orig att wireless, pre cingular
best of luck in getting it changed, I was tempted to jump to iphone 4 but would like to have the unlimited data. On local carrier I have the nexus one with a $14.99 unlimited data & unlimited text, tough to find another carrier that can do that.

Sad day for me...

So I was going to buy a G2 today. The guy that was selling it to me works at a T-mobile kiosk in the mall (actually, he said that he owned them at that particular mall), and I wanted to test out the data speeds with my sim card. I currently have a nexus 1. Well, I am really glad that did that before buying the phone because I found out that you need to upgrade to a 4G data plan after trying to browse the web on the phone. I don't know why that never occurred to me in the first place. I am off contract right now and didn't want to recommit to another two years, plus being able to tether and use as a wifi hotspot for free is a nice perk, haha. Granted, I guess COULD change all that with rooting, but the whole process confuses me and I have yet to take the plunge on my N1. Also, I am currently testing out whether I would get throttled with my current plan because I have 3 days left on this billing cycle. So am doing everything i can to use data. Anyway, the guy wanted $290 for the phone, but it was a little bit more dinged up than I would have cared, plus some very light scratches on the screen. The spring was also very VERY loose.
Tmobile doesn't not charge extra for "4G".
There is no 4G data plan and it isn't extra. That kiosk does not sound very reputable, either.
Also, the n1 is super easy to root since it was basically made for it.

If you are off contract all you need to do is call customer care, shout "retention" until you get forwarded to a rep and have them add a $10 data plan to your em+ plan. Even better, get onto the internet live service rep directly & explain what it is you're trying to do. I have found that they're much better at directly answering questions & implementing plan changes than the telephone jockeys.
This guy is trying to jerk your proverbial chicken.
I also find it hard to believe that you haven't rooted your n1. What rock have you been living under?

Lol I just haven't had much need to do it until recently, I guess. Plus might send it in for a warranty exchange because I have some dust under the screen and I dont want them to squawk at me for rooting the phone.

I pay $35 per month for unlimited text and data. He said I would have to sign on for a $30 per month 4G data plan and then $15 for unlimited texts because I didn't want to renew my contract. $30 + $15 = $45, or ten dollars more. I reckon I could call tmo directly, but I just haven't put much thought into it.
Answer is simple, send it in for an exchange and if they can't give you another N1, have them send you a g2.
If it is to much of a concern, you could offer the guy $290 for the physical phone, get tmo to change your plan and replace the springs with the recently posted guide. Even with some scratches, $290 is a hell of a deal for a g2.

Verizon force removing grandfathered "Unlimited Data"

I should have posted this two months ago when I found out, but got lazy. The now $30 fee reminded me and I decided I should pass the info along. I had a conversation with:
Handsets, Product Distribution, Business
Brenda Raney
908-559-7518
[email protected]
This conversation was about the NFC blocking but I baited her with a comment and she responded by saying something along the lines of "Unlimited Data would no longer be an option on "Advanced" handsets released later this year (2012). When you upgrade to one of these new "Advanced" (IE Smartphone) you will have to give up your unlimited data plan and pick a paid package."
She would not tell me when it would happen, but said that Verizon was not under any obligation to continue to grandfather people with unlimited data. I fully expect this to happen as soon as Quad Core phones hit the market.
Just one more drop in the bucket. Removing unlimited data packages for new subscribers, removing early upgrades, every two discounts, blocking Google from releasing direct updates for developer devices like the Galaxy Nexus, and now the $30 upgrade fee.
No, I did not record the phone conversation but the removal of grandfathered unlimited data will happen, and sooner then later. Feel free to chalk it up to a rumor if you don't believe me but when it happens, don't say I didn't warn you.
New Verizon devices use Sim cards, welcome to the world of buying off contract devices.
I wonder if this will let you break contract.

Sounds like it would to me
It seems like something they would do. I think I know there "plan" to get every one off unlimited data.
I have herd some things, but not like this. I think this is about spot on.
Now I will hold on to both of my unlimited data for dear life.
Edit: yes they do throttle 4G and will be doing more and more intill the next iphone and then will pull an AT&T X2. They will likely force you out of unlimited when you upgrade or if you you are on a "old" 4G phone they will throttle you on 4GLTE. I know, becuase I was throttled on 4G and then I stoped using the phone for 3 days, now I am unthrottled and sit at 90+hours of uptime with 2GB of use.
Link to some one who got throttled on 4G:http://www.phonearena.com/news/Is-Verizon-throttling-4G-speeds-too_id22818
Now he did use a crap load of data and I think he got what was coming, but I know when the new iphone with LTE comes out, WE ARE DOOMED. I have a 2nd line with unlimited data on AT&T, thats my back up plan. If not oh well.
Once again Verizon showing how little they care about their customers. From a legal standpoint they could probably do this because when you get a new phone you are under a new contract. But what if you buy the phone from ebay, etc and just add it to your plan. You are still technically under the same contract but they could track ESNs and force your plan to switch.
I hope they don't do this. I just left att after months of looking to take over someones Verizon contract. I found a person with 2 unlimited lines hopefully its not short lived. I really don't want to go to sprint

Verizon is CDMA only. The SIM cards are used for LTE, not GSM (a few phones have SIM slots for international GSM, but they're useless while on the Verizon network). So no, there is no buying of unlocked phones from Verizon.
Speaking of this, in China and other Asian countries, CDMA devices have SIM cards called R-UIM cards that work exactly the same way as GSM SIM cards, but CDMA carriers here in the US want to be able to stranglehold you in terms of what kinds of phone you use.
Hopefully Sprint still has unlimited data and their act together when my current contract is up in two years. Verizon charges an arm and a leg for their services and it's not enough? They have to nickel and dime us every step of the way. Aside from decent service I can't say that I feel like I get a whole lot for my money with Verizon. I've just had enough bad experiences with AT&T, and Sprint that I've been afraid to go back to either of them. Maybe it's not so bad these days?
I hope so too, becuase I need a 3rd back up plan and for every one elses sake.
My experience with AT&T has been very good, but I don't think that would be true if I was locked in for 2 years. Sprint has really come up in the last year or so and they seem like they are upgrading fast. (NV and LTE)
Not surprising in the least. Sprint will have to soon end too and remove grandfathered unlimited. Aside from that though, thanks for this update.
I wouldn't read a ton into all this stuff. And I don't know how good of an idea it is to publish someones personal/professional contact info for them on any forum...
I worked with verizon for a while, and on a daily basis I was upgrading phones and allowing customers to keep these 5 or 6 year old alltel rate plans.
It is absolutely correct that verizon can remove unlimited from grandfathered accounts if it wants to, but verizon's course of action with old alltel plans and the like, suggest that it won't happen.
I'm not saying it will or wont happen, all I'm saying is that its definitely possible that they will allow you to keep unlimited data, as long as you are playing nice and not DLing 100 gb's a month on their network.
I love all the misinformation, conjecture, an the posting of a professional email, signs of the derogation of society.
First: Yes VZW is charging an upgade fee. To say everyone is doing it is a cop out. To say that they are loosing money on equipment subsidies is true and the fee helps recap som of the cost while keeping prices competitive even with their own indirect partners.
Second, the only time you can loose a grandfathered plan per contractual agreement is a) older Altel devices that upgrade or change devices because there is no longer an Altel contract. b) you change to a basic (from smart) phone for over 30 days or c) you agree to it.
There are no exceptions to the three listed above. Don't believe me: 1800-922-0204 and ask for the loyalty department.
I love all the verizon fan boys who think they are the best and they would NEVER pull some thing over them like: taking away unlimited data, THROTTLING or the $30 "upgrade" fee.
The contract only lets you keep grandfathered plan's for the lenth of time you signed up for (AKA 2 years) and then They can make you sign a new contract with out unlimited data if you want to upgrade and if you don't upgrade, then they can just take it away.
Why is so easy for me to type this you may ask? Becuase they throttled me at 12Gb and now I can't go over about 10-15gb with out ricking this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCbvDEewcJU&feature=channel&list=UL
P.S I sit at 65GB on AT&T and no throttling. Eat that verizon
I really came in under the wire on this one. I upgraded about three months ago; still have my unlimited data. I never really understood why providers are simply eliminating unlimited plans rather than charging exorbitant amounts of money which plenty of people would pay.

Nope, this is what I think they will do. They are thinking about razing the price up as well to get every one off of it, like AT&T did the $20 unlimited to 30, but with more kick. I have herd every thing from 30 going up to 50, all the way to it replacing the 20GB plan.
Any way: They are going to do some thing soon and well I will just say it's not likely going to be good.

Pretty much the exact thing I heard when I called them a few weeks ago. I've been out of a contract for almost 6 years now (just lucky that my phone breaks when they dont have any more and get a free upgrade). I currently have a HTC Trophy with Windows Phone 7 and dont have a newer one because they have not gotten newer WP7 devices, YET.
I called them up and was asking on new devices and presented them with the same question. According to Verizon, I can buy a new Smartphone today, sign a new 2 year agreement and I still will not lose my unlimited data plan according to them.
Of course the day I do it, that will be my first question and will ask for it in writing
As of this moment you are not forced off of your unlimited plan when upgrading phones or switching between current phones

So it's ok for Verizon to publish her information on their public website, but not for me to copy and paste it from that site to this one? I will edit this post later to provid the direct link to Verizon's corporate PUBLIC website that lists this PUBLIC information. As a "former Verizon employee" you should know all about their public site and what's listed on it. Even if it wasn't Verizon does not respect its customers so I have no respect for their employees at the upper level management.
I will get you that link tomorrow (today really, but later). My nephew is having a bad night teething and is co sleeping next to me so this post is on my device not a pc or I would do it now.
Fyi I have never gone over 5gb on my cell. I don't abuse my unlimited. Oh and I am rooted and can tether for free. Not everyone deserves to be ppunished for the crimes of a few. Wish VZW would figure that out but in reality people abusing unlimited is just an excuse to increase profits, which gets their CEO a bigger bonus. It's all about the money. Corporate Greed.

I got unlimited data on att

yep, thats right unlimited data off their premier website, activated today for $35. with my 25% discount it comes to $26.25 per month, two year contract. I was on the phone with them for 4 hours last thursday beccause I only wanted the plan because I have a Nexus, but it wouldn't check out without buying a phone, then the phone was supposed to have a $100 discount and I couldn't get the discount to show in the cart. Never did, but when i got pissed and told them to send me to cancellation, the clerk gave me a $20 dollar discount for the next three months. Good enough, so i now also own a samsung rugby smart. I talked to about half a dozen ppl there, and they all said there was no unlimited data plan. I had to give them permission to signin to my account and walk them through the process. ---->
They sent an email saying i needed to renew my plan to continue to receive the 25% discount. I followed the link to the upgrade site which started with choosing a phone. I selected smartphone link. off to the right on the next page is the cart where they have phone, accessories and data plans and something else i can't remember. Instead of selecting a phone I selected the data plans first. next page had 4 tabs, one being individual plans. all the way on the bottom is a plan "smartphone personal plan for 4g devices". This is listed as unlimited data. I put it in the cart. I couldn't check out, there was an asterisk next to the phone selection. So i had to select that, and it showed three phones, the rugby, a captivate, and some pantech phone. The rugby had the $100 discount that wouldn't show in the cart, that is when i said send me to cancellations, where I got the monthly relief. Not a hundred bucks, but close enough. i completed the checkout. Phone arrived yesterday, I activated it, and today it shows the plan on my account.
Crazy that nobody at att knew anything about the plan, and were amazed when they saw it. I was even told at one point that it would not be honored. Woo hoo..........
I find the unlimited part hard to bealive the only people that can offer that is Higher up people or if your on Media net otherwise not possible. Also I have heard Reps and people at the store call the 10GB plan Unlimated as most people 99% of the time wont know or use that much anyway
I know its hard to believe. As you can see in the OP all the folks at ATT that signed in to my account and I walked them through the steps couldn't believe it either. I just looked at the site again before reposting, and sure enough it is still showing the SMT personal plan with unlimited data. I haven't used more than 2 gb since I lowered from 4gb almost a year ago, cause i wait till i get to wifi to do large downloads and didn't like paying the outrageous costs for their darn data plans. Its a wait and see if and how it goes in the future. This is not medianet by the way.
Did you have a smart phone with AT&T before? Did you even have AT&T before and what link do I need to go to try this?
Thanks
Dial *DATA#
I have been with att forever, back b4 they became cingular, probably about 30 years. yes, i can remember the "cell" phones that had the giant battery pack attached. I currently have a Nexus b4 this phone. I only bought this phone cause it was the only way to get the plan. Pain in the ass trying to get cwm on it too.
As stated in the op, when I went to upgrade i really only wanted to update the plan because I didn't want to pay for another phone. when i went to the upgrade, it directed me to the phones first, but i skipped and went to data plans first, then when it forced me to buy a phone, it only showed 3 phones. After looking closer at the specs today, the reason it went that way is because the modem in this phone will not handle 4g. UMTS tops. They don't see it being to good for data! The signal indicator in the status bar is kinda neat because it is "4g" moniker but it is only capable of 3g. WTF ATT. Keep in mind the name of the plan is Smart phone plan for 4g devices. Kinda misleading, eh?
So, I haven't put the sim card in my Nexus yet, but hopefully I ain't hosed there. If it doesn't work I'll go to the b&m store and get a new sim. Going to wait till the first billing cycle (14th of the month) before i switch back to the Nexus. Love the fact that it is a rugged water resistant phone, but can't be my daily driver for too long. I'll update after i switch back to my nexus.
couldn't stand the wait. put the sim in my Nexus and it shows hsdpa:8 - good to go there
Did you have to wait until your phone arrived and you activated for the new plan to show up on your account? Did the new unlimited plan automatically replace your old plan?

Our phone company partners with a couple cellular carriers and I find that in each carrier portal unlimited is not truly unlimited, it's just set to something like 999999 MB or it's capped at 2 or 10GB and refreshes when you hit that cap without charge because they will begin to throttle you after what they consider excessive use.
My company actually has some feature phones that they've provisioned with unlimited data due to technical issues. I hope no one discovers the USB modem capability

How to keep unlimited data when buying phone?

I'm currently on a family line with 2 phones having a 2GB data plan and 2 other phones having unlimited data. I currently have unlimited data on my line with an upgrade and I'm planning on purchasing this phone at a subsidized price.
My plan was to transfer my upgrade to a 2 GB line. Activating it on that line and then simply swapping it over to my line and inserting the SIM card into it. Now it appears that I cannot simply insert the SIM as it takes a nano SIM card and not the micro SIM that my galaxy s4 currently uses. How would I be able to switch over the line and keep my unlimited data?
Can I just grab another nano SIM from Verizon or is that not possible? I'm getting a little worried I'll lose my unlimited data if I swap lines. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I think we're the same person. I'm in an identical situation and I'd like to know the answer to this as well. I have upgraded other lines to keep my unlimited in the past but I haven't had to have a new sim to do it until now.

They give Sim cards away at Verizon for no charge. Just ask.

Just tell Verizon your buying a phone from a friend. Like perhaps a iPhone or a moot x. They all use a nano SIM
Verizon gives out some cards for free.
Here is the latest update to keeping unlimited I have seen. Transferring upgrade may no longer work. See Method 5.

I've upgraded on a non smartphone line before since the other 2 have unlimited data, but it looks like you cannot remove the data anymore so your stuck paying the data fees for 2yrs.... Sucks
I believe they make SIM cutters. Might want to look into those.
Or just ask Verizon to send you a new SIM card.

I did it two years ago and I was able to remove it. Went into Verizon today to ask since I saw your comment, and they still said it's okay, but you have to wait maybe 12 or so hours to reactivate it on your line. I guess I'll ask somewhere else to confirm it tomorrow.
Please let me know. Can't wait to get this phone. Thank you

Talked to two different reps today. One store wouldn't give me any information since it's against policy I guess. The other rep at my usual store (this makes 4 people from this store saying it, one person has done it for me) confirmed it again. He said that transferring upgrades is okay but it may come back on the employee. Not really sure about that part, but it may be why they're hesitant to do it or admit it. But activating the phone and transferring it to your line is okay. Again I was told you may have 12 hours of down time to avoid suspicion or something like that. Again, not sure about that since 2 years ago they activated it on my line within 5 minutes and had me out. You can remove data lines from basic phones too by calling Verizon and having the CSR remove it from the system, which I did last time.
As far as SIM cards go, this should not be an issue. I forgot to ask the reps today, but yesterday I was told that it doesn't matter. They'll activate the phone on your non unlimited line, toss the SIM, and put in a new one for your line. I'm not sure which line gets the 12 hours of downtime here though, since I was in a bit of a hurry and forgot that too. I'm a little worried about that since I don't want my mother to go phoneless for a day since she has work and all. But as far as upgrades go, you'll be set and keeping your unlimited data with it. I'll be buying my phone next Thursday on the 30th, so if you want, I can let you know how it goes. I just hope I don't run into a rep that won't help me with this, since I guess technically they're not allowed to. If anybody has any conflicting information, please let me know. I'll try to clear it up with my store since they don't seem to have an issue with this method and are surprisingly honest about it.
After keeping my HTC Thunderbolt since its release (warranty claim recently upgraded me to a Droid DNA!), I finally have succumbed to relinquishing my unlimited data plan. I fully understand why you would want to keep it and admit that it felt like tearing my heart out when I switched to the more everything plan but I will say a few things:
1. Earlier last month I read that Verizon wanted to start throttling unlimited plans after 5gb of use. Recently I saw that they decided not to, so yay for you! I do however think that they are going to make it harder and harder to keep your plan as time passes. As it is, you are probably paying significantly more per month to keep the plan.
2. If you downgrade to a more everything plan there is a "month to month" promo that gives you the same Edge plan perk of $15/smartphone per month line access fee (as opposed to the $40 one). Again this is a promo for out of contract people and I know it is active because it was just applied to my account. (Note, you must select at least the 10gb plan and of course be out of contract)
3. By switching out of the unlimited data plan I now have unlimited minutes per month, 10GB of monthly data (family's average was 5gb-7gb anyway), and am paying ~$65 less per month on my bill now.
I'm not trying to convince anyone to switch, but $65 less a month is a lot of money saved when I wasn't even using 10gb per month.
I hope this helps someone like me who kept unlimited out of principal but didn't actually utilize it.

I assume this did not include getting a new phone. If you want to keep that offer when upgrading, I assume you will have to use Verizon edge, right?

At the moment we still have all our old phones, yes. I was told that the promo would last until we decide to upgrade. At that point, if we use "Edge", the line access fee is still $15/smartphone per month plus the monthly cost of the phone (this is a permanent price feature for all edge plans 10gb and over AFIK). I asked what happens after the phone is payed off and was told that the line access fee jumps to $40/smartphone per month unless we "re-Edge" another phone or jump onto the "month to month" promotion again which may or may not be available. Note: I have been told many things about what happens after an edge plan phone is paid off. I am not 100% sure if the line access fee changes or not. I know that while paying off phones on the edge plan, plans 10gb or over have a $15/smartphone per month line access fee and all other non-edge plan devices have a $40/smartphone per month line access fee. Tablets are $10 per month on or off of edge which is cool.
Also, because I would have to pay full price for a phone on my old unlimited plan anyways, I did not incorporate the additional cost(s) of the phone(s) into my monthly savings mentioned above. I figure that with unlimited data or edge you have to pay the full price of the phone anyway so technically if we got new phones at full price and swapped them out, we would still have the promo active. Then again, not everybody (me included) can fork out $600+ per line on their account all at once. Lastly, so many great new phones are coming out every quarter that I kind of like edge because after 60% of the phone is paid off I can jump to a new one and continue payments as normal. It allows me to stay current with technology instead of holding on to a crappy thunderbolt just because it had unlimited data

For some of us, like me, I am trying to stay on my unlimited data plan because it is cheaper (or pretty much the same price) for me than anything else Verizon currently offers. I have a plan with Unlimited Data, 450 minutes, 400 texts and I pay about $65 a month total. The only comparable plan would be the new single line plan which is Unlimited Talk/Text and 2Gb data for $60. Thing is, I don't need any more talk or text because I never use what I currently have. I do use a lot of data. If I were to switch to a More Everything plan I would be paying heaps more every month for less data than I get now.
Verizon just simply doesn't have plans anymore that cater to people like me who want limited minutes/texts and lots of data.

Yeah, I would stay on your current plan too It is harder to manage with a family plan and everyone wanting new phones though... Good luck!
Can someone confirm if this would work....
I have a 5 line family plan. 3 smartphones and 2 dumbphones. 2 of the smartphones are UDP and one is 2GB. I have an upgrade available on a dumbphone line. I would like to move that upgrade from the dumbphone line to the 2GB tier smartphone line and get a new smartphone. Once the new smartphone is activated on the 2GB line, could I then swap the sim from the new phone and give my existing phone to the 2GB line and then put my UDP sim in the new phone without changing my UDP? I was hoping this could work as the upgrade is not from my UDP line which would cause me to lose my unlimited as I have read on the net. So would this scenario allow me to preserve my UDP? Thanks for any help!

Yes, i did a variation of this two years ago, it works. And according to the reps i spoke to, it still does. Although there is no need to transfer the upgrade. Activate the phone on your dumbphone line, then reactivate the dumbphone on that line. It will drop the data plan from the line and then you can activate the new phone onto your udp line. This is called an alternate upgrade. The reps i spoke to know what it is, and they probably will help you with it.

Unfortunately this is no longer true. If you update one of the dumb lines and get a smart phone, the dump line will be locked in to a tiered data plan for 2 years. The carriers closed this loophole a few months ago.

Great idea, but I'd double and triple check the new contract when you sign them though. Since the carries are doing it to the UDPs, they may apply the same restriction to all lines. IE., since the update comes from the dumb line, they may force you to sign up for a tiered data plan for 2 years on the dumb line.
... Just make sure you read the contact closely when you update
