Hello XDA,
I need some instruction on how to root and install cwm recovery on my nexus player. I’m currently trying to achieve this with a live boot of bbqlinux for sdk support. I managed to unlock the bootloader. I tried to gain root by installing SuperSu from the app store, but no dice. If anyone can give me insight on what commands/directories/steps needed to accomplish this, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, I have all the files I need on the internal storage of the device.
Thanks
UPDATE - Bootloader is unlocked. When I try to boot the root.img, i get a softbrick and sent back to the bootloader. USB Debugging and unknown sources on.
UPDATE - I was unable to gain root privilege with the stock rom. Soo, I flashed cm12.1 N. Took two flashing, but it lives.

guys...I am not really a noob, I have experience with many devices, and now I bought a nexus.
yesterday I started my journey with a g-experience device trying to do some stuff with the nexus 7....
I unlocked the bootloader with the nexus toolkit...pretty easy!..but I'm stuck at this point...
I tried to root the device, but the toolkit says that there is no permission for that, then it installs busybox and the operation finishes....
so, the other way is to root from recovery...installed both cwm and twrp but the device boots on the stock recovery, and I can't rename the recovery files because I don't have permissions for that, I can't mount system on r/w...
then I tried to flash via adb comands, but nothing...I can't boot from a temporary recovery, I can't do nothing...
can someone help me please? :good:
EDIT: I solved flahing the old bootloader and rooting with nexus root toolkit.
close this please
Hello,
I am looking for a smooth method to lock and unlock the bootloader on my Nexus Player. Although being it is not a phone I guess I could just leave it unlocked... I am also looking for the best current method to root the Nexus Player on 6.0. I have been searching but I keep coming across guides for lollipop.
Thank you in advance!
Unlock/root guides are similar. They are the same except for the files used.
For Android M - i use fugu-mra58k. Use Chainfire's beta-supersu-v2.51 and it requires custom boot img, can be found on his tread http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps...ellow-t3219344. There is supersu2.52 but im not sure if it will have issues. My NP was already unlocked so I just flashed factory, moved supersu2.51 zip, boot into bootloader and flash twrp and CF's custom boot.img. At this point DO NOT restart NP, just boot it into twrp and flash supersu (you'll need otg+mouse attached). reboot and you should be good to go.
I'm using zuk z1,android 5.1.1,a normal device as it is from manufacturer.I want to root my device. As I am newbie I got a doubt, does unlocking bootloader means rooting device? After I unlocked my bootloader with help of my computer, can I directly install TWRP manager app from play store and flash TWRP recovery with that app?l don't want to flash it by PC as I don't know much about it. Can I flash supersu with smartphone itself.
No. Until you don't install KingoRoot Or SuperSU. Your phone is not permanently rooted. Rooting is the Android equivalent of jailbreaking, a means of unlocking the operating system so you can install unapproved apps, deleted unwanted bloatware, update the OS, replace the firmware, overclock (or underclock) the processor, customize anything and so on.

Well, I believe that using the manager won't make any difference with flashing it using a PC. And once you have flashed the recovery, reboot into it and in my case, when I was trying to reboot to system from TWRP it popped a message and told me that your phone is not rooted- Do you want to root and install SuperSU? And that's how I rooted mine. However after booting into the system you might want to update the SuperSU and the binary to the latest version!
Try it! Hope it'll solve the issue. Feel free to ask any doubts! Because that's what we do here at XDA!
I brought a OnePlus 6t and immediately unlocked the bootloader. In hindsight, I wish I hadn't as I'm not really sure I need root.
But now I have, I need to root to use various apps now that I have unlocked the bootloader.
When I first rooted it, I didn't install twrp but can't remember what I did and cant find any guides.
Can anyone let me know what process I need to root without installing twrp please?

Boot in fastboot mode, then temporarily boot into TWRP (fastboot boot TWRPimage.img) and flash magisk zip and reboot system.
P.s. "boot" command does not permanently flash the image.

Here is the complete guide
If you need root without twrp you can patch the boot image for root access
I'm a newbie to this, so I'll be very very grateful if I get step by step instructions. I need to do all of this without a PC (don't have access to one), so please help me out!
So after getting my new mobile (4gb if that matters) today, I was thinking of using Kingo root to root, then use Flashify to flash TWRP, new ROM, Magisk, and Viper. Please guide me!
First you need to unlock bootloader with help of PC then flash twrp and take backup of old rom and flash new rom. You cannot root without unlocked bootloader.
