UPDATE: 08/26/2015 - Read post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62527782&postcount=23
So I wanted to try out Project Fi. I read that you would be able to port from Google Voice to Project Fi, then back to Google Voice if you didn't like the service. The service is pretty bad where I live, and well the data is just not competitive. The long and short of it, you will have to port you Project Fi number to another carrier, then port it back to Google Voice. This is contrary to what the so called "experts" at Android Central had to say.
Here are a few choice quotes from my endeavor;
Kiyani M 10:06 PM No problem Nate, I can answer that question for you. If you decide to cancel your Project Fi service, while going through the cancellation process you will be prompted to port your Project Fi phone number elsewhere, including Google Voice.
me 10:06 PM Perfect, is there a fee to port back to Google Voice?
Kiyani M 10:07 PM You will be provided with an account number to use with Google Voice to transfer the phone number. There is no fee to port to Google Voice, however, do you have a Google Voice account under a different Gmail account as your Project Fi account?
me 10:08 PM No I am using my primary Google account and it's associated Google Voice number with Project Fi now.
Kiyani M 10:09 PM Okay, so I am sure you are aware that Google Voice account no longer exist since the activation of your Project Fi account. You will need to create a new Gmail account and then create a new Google Voice account on that address.
me 10:10 PM In order to port it back?
Kiyani M 10:10 PM That is correct, once your Project Fi account was activated, it assimilated your old Google Voice account.
me 10:11 PM But if I want my Google Voice number back on my primary Google account, do I need to do all that? or just cancel my Project Fi service and port it to my primary Google account?
Kiyani M 10:13 PM You are able to do that, however, you will need to port the phone number to a "placeholder" Google Voice account and then set Google Voice back up on your primary Gmail account and then port the number there.

Again, further clarification and assurance everything will be just fine to port back to GV.
Todd Jetter 5:35 PM Sure, here's how you do that...
In your Project Fi app or website, in your Account tab, go to Your Plan and select Cancel service. Now...
There, you should see as one of your options, "Transfer your number to Google Voice".
Before you do that, is there any question or concern I can help you with related to your cancelling ?
me 5:36 PM I don't see a cancel service, only Pause Service. There are two issues with the service. The data plan is not competitive enough for my needs. The cellular signal is not nearly as good as with my other provider.
Todd Jetter 5:37 PM Got you, well again sorry it didn't meet your needs. If another provider is better able to do so, we encourage you to go with what works best for you. Now...
me 5:38 PM Before I continue, I was told I can not port the number to the same Google account that Project Fi is on. If that is correct do I need to request a Google Voice number on the other account, or just have logged in to that account and see Google Voice is present.
Todd Jetter 5:38 PM ...the Cancel service button, should be right next to the Pause service button in the lower right of the screen, see it ?
me 5:38 PM Yes I see it, it is not on the Mobile App just the website.
Todd Jetter 5:39 PM Oh, let me get you clarification on your GV number on the other account question. Can you hang tight while I look that up ?
me 5:40 PM Yes, it is extremely important that I do not lose that number.
Todd Jetter 5:41 PM Oh I completely understand how important keeping your number can be ! That is why I'm going to get the correct information. In fact I'm going to consult with a manager, it will take about 3 to 5 minutes. Is that all right ?
me 5:41 PM Yes
Todd Jetter 5:50 PM All right and thank you so much for your patience Nate...
Again, I wanted to make sure your not going to lose your number because I know how important that is. So...
Todd Jetter 5:54 PM Oh sounds great ! Right, it will be progressing as you know, so 'stay-tuned'. But I did get clarification that when you select the "Transfer your number to Google Voice" , it will revert back to the same G-mail, (or give you the option to select another G-mail when relevant ) Also... I consulted my specialty Tech-support-team who advised, if anything did go wrong with that process ( it can happen, right ?) then your number would not be lost. As they have process where they could recover the number from the system.

And the Grand Finale you are S-O-L
Ashley D 8:02 PM When you went online to cancel the service did you see the option to port out your number?
me 8:03 PM Yes
It didn't give an option to port to Google Voice like I was told it would
Ashley D 8:04 PM
Did you receive the account information to port the number out of Project Fi?
me 8:05 PM Yes, but find no way to import or bring that to Google Voice.
Ashley D 8:05 PM Give me just a moment Nate
me 8:05 PM Ok
Ashley D 8:11 PM Thank you for your patience. I am still looking into this.
When you went to cancel your account and port the number to Google Voice, you were only given the option to port to "another provider', correct?
me 8:12 PM Correct
And it gave me an account number and password.
Ashley D 8:17 PM Thank you for your patience.
At this time, when you cancel your account and the option to transfer to Google Voice is not visible, it means the number is no longer eligible to be ported to Google Voice. I definitely do apologize for the confusion. If you would like to continue to use the number you would have to port it into another carrier.
me 8:17 PM I was told twice it was possible
Ashley D 8:17 PM I definitely do apologize about that Nate.
Ashley D 8:19 PM I definitely understand the frustration, Nate. Google uses a third-party company called Bandwidth to manage and hold the phone numbers used for Google Voice. If a phone number is not able to be transferred to Google Voice, that means that the phone number does not meet the eligibility requirements that Bandwidth has placed. Additionally, Bandwidth's eligibility requirements have changed over time, so some numbers that have been ported in from Google Voice may no longer be eligible for porting back out to Google Voice.

Well it would have made sense for you to ask sprint/tmobile users in your area how their coverage is prior to porting. I went from Tmo to Fi so I knew my coverage would be great, and just made better by the added Sprint coverage. So I ported my GV number over and have no regrets. A little research goes a long way.
When you sign up for Project Fi, it's clear that you cannot get your GV number back.

It was a trial not necessarily going to keep the service because of data. The service maps shows pretty good Tmob service, however building penetration isn't very good. This thread isn't about the Project Fi service, it's about GV and Project Fi telephone numbers.
Thanks for this info. I got to the sign up portion about porting my GV number and then stopped because I just want to be able to try Project Fi without giving up my GV number or Unlimited Data on VZW. I use my GV number for EVERYTHING (don't use my VZW account for calls or texts at all) so this porting portion makes me nervous.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Mountainous areas like Wyoming are tough on cellphone coverage. It looks like VZ has the best coverage but it's still spotty.
Rats!!!
Well poop....
there goes my google voice number i've had since beta.
I actually used my GV number on Fi for about 3 weeks and switched back to T-Mobile. When I cancelled the Fi service using the app it asked if I wanted my number ported back to GV. I selected that option, and by the next day my GV was back online with my regular T-Mobile number and service. I was able to use the Fi number while the porting process went on in the background all that day. The process was effortless for me. I have heard of others having nightmares though.

And the Fi invite is tied to our Gmail accounts, correct? So it's not like we can setup a new a Gmail account with a new GV number to try out the service and avoid these hassles.

I ask this same thing to a rep because I found out all of this GV hassle after the fact I ordered my sim and she said she you couldn't do that. I have another GV number that I don't care about so she said she would expedite me an invite to that number and email.....still waiting. I have my fi card I just got today and its killing me not to activate! Can't lose my GV number that I signed up with because I ported it from Verizon several years ago and its my work number. I switch carriers all the time and just wanted to see how fi did in my area. Think I might call instead of online chat and give it one more shot with this new sim I have on a different GV account.
---------- Post added at 07:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:20 PM ----------
Ok. I called Project fi and they are supposedly going to switch my sim to a different email account with a google voice. He said they do this on Mondays so he didn't think mine will be done until next Monday. I informed him that it was Monday but he said that its 4 pm there....so I guess they are out getting hammered already. So it looks like another week before I can activate this sim. Losing interest fast. I would have never done this if it wasn't for the fact I talked to fi reps twice and they assured my I could go back to GV with no problems and then I hear and find all the horror stories and then talk to them a third time and they confirm what I had heard. Don't think you will be getting my 50 bucks Google...even though I wanted so badly to give it to you to test the service out.
Maybe Google should change this then?

They claimed you were not porting your GV number and you could go back to GV from fi whenever you liked. Take your redneck trolls elsewhere...and BTW. You can't ring your GV number anywhere once you port to fi unless you are on wifi or cellular data and use hangouts to make a wifi or cellular data call...SMH.
I've never heard of such a thing, why would anyone do this? Assinine. Just port your existing phone number to Fi, Fi is just another phone service smh

But I got around this by transferring my GV number ahead of signing up for Fi to a different Gmail account and then picking a new number during the order.

I also transferred my GV # to an alternate gmail account. I'm going to transfer my existing mobile # to Fi, but I didn't want to take any chances with my GV #. Where's my invite? I've been on 3-4 weeks for over 4 weeks.

I have my mobile number and my Google voice number tied to my nexus one phone. There is a setting to allow me to call using either number. When calling with my Google voice number will it use my tmobile minutes? If so, is there a way to get around this? I read up on Gizmo5 but currently registration is closed.
configured via the google voice app.
Yes, either way will cost your minutes, unless you find a way to use VOIP
I think one way people were using it was to assign their GV number as one of their Fave 5's, but unless you were able to grandfather a MyFaves plan over, you'll have to wait for Google to launch their VOIP part of Google Voice. You 'can' use Google Voice to help save you money though...

Was google voice app pre-installed on the N1 Or do I need to down load it...
it's pre installed, but you need an invite to access it.
Logging in with the phone seems to give you an invite. I had requested but not received one -- it worked great on my phone though!
Sweet, yup this phone gives you a google voice number
Does the built-in version of Google Voice support either of these features?
1) Enable/disable/add/remove phone numbers that GV forwards your calls to.
2) Make an outbound call via the internet that is routed to your landline phone. For example, you have wifi but not cell service and you want to make a free long-distance call. You request that GV call your landline phone first and then connect you to the other person.

I also wanted to confirm that is correct, even without a previous invite, the app will automatically grant you an invite.

Call phones from Gmail

Gmail voice and video chat makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family using your computer’s microphone and speakers. But until now, this required both people to be at their computers, signed into Gmail at the same time. Given that most of us don’t spend all day in front of our computers, we thought, “wouldn’t it be nice if you could call people directly on their phones?”
Starting today, you can call any phone right from Gmail.
Calls to the U.S. and Canada will be free for at least the rest of the year and calls to other countries will be billed at our very low rates. We worked hard to make these rates really cheap (see comparison table) with calls to the U.K., France, Germany, China, Japan—and many more countries—for as little as $0.02 per minute.
Dialing a phone number works just like a normal phone. Just click “Call phone” at the top of your chat list and dial a number or enter a contact’s name.

We’ve been testing this feature internally and have found it to be useful in a lot of situations, ranging from making a quick call to a restaurant to placing a call when you’re in an area with bad reception.
If you have a Google Voice phone number, calls made from Gmail will display this number as the outbound caller ID. And if you decide to, you can receive calls made to this number right inside Gmail (see instructions).
We’re rolling out this feature to U.S. based Gmail users over the next few days, so you’ll be ready to get started once “Call Phones” shows up in your chat list (you will need to install the voice and video plug-in if you haven’t already). If you’re using Google Apps for your school or business, then you won’t see it quite yet. We’re working on making this available more broadly - so stay tuned!

Amazing!
Now, the question is: how to make these VOIP calls from the Nexus One over Wi-fi?!
Goodbye Skype, RIP
I'm sure it's only a matter of time before the google voice app works over wifi and 3g.
Voip on android phone is now within our grasp MUHAHAHAHA!!!
Add SIP and Canadian local numbers/signups and this will be great. I'd use the 3cx soft phone app and be happy.

I guess I'm kinda confused, I've been in the Google Voice beta for some time now, well since I got my Nexus one back in March.
Google Voice isn't in beta anymore and anyone can sign up for free... Doesn't this already provide us with VOIP using the Google Voice Application on the Market?

No, though you are correct that it already works on wifi and 3g, i believe he was talking about a VOIP application from Google that can work on both of those. Currently GV is NOT a voip service,ll it is is a fancy forwarder (a very useful forwarder) it still takes minutes to call people. We are hoping that they will eventually convert it into a voip client like the gmail client just did explained in the article.
GV VOIP on the Android headset would change the whole telephone industry. I'd imagine big companies have been worrying about this for a while. Data rates would have to be seriously reconsidered. Unlimited data in the US, if a GV VOIP integration was made, would explode. This is why Verizon has locked down the Skype app to their voice network.
The last I read before this release was that Google was trying to nail down the mic/speaker driver interactions with the browser itself. They had almost abandoned the project. That's where those fancy Chrome/Mozilla plugins come in. With CM's mod, I tried visiting gmail with desktop as the user agent, but without those plugins it's useless.

sure, well part of it, if you are out in the middle of no where and only hada wifi (no carrier signal) you could still send/ recieve google voice txts, but you would not recieve any calls since the calls are still routed through your carrier since GV is not a voip service, just a VERY fancy (and useful) call forwarder.
Looks like there's some confusion as to what Google Voice is versus what Gmail Calling is.
Google Voice is absolutely nothing but a call forwarding service. The instant that the call connects (ie you the other person's phone ringing), you are 100% using your cell phone carrier's signal and 0 data. Zero. None. Zilch. No VOIP whatsoever. Google Voice simply connects you to the other person, that's it. You're still using your cell phone's minutes.
The only data is the initial 3 seconds between the instant you hit Call and the instant the other person's phone starts ringing. It uses data to connect the call through Google Voice's servers. So sure, that 3 seconds before the call connects can use 3G or Wifi.
Gmail Calling on the other hand, is 100% VOIP. You call through your PC, using your DSL connection, Cable, Satellite, Starbucks Wifi, 56K modem, etc. 100% data. It uses 0 cell phone minutes, because obviously your PC has no idea what cell phone carrier you have, or if you even have a phone at all.
Google Voice and Gmail Calling = two completely different products.
Now, my question is:
How do we get Gmail Calling (VOIP) on the Nexus One?

Good explanation, I cant imagine why it is taking google so long to get VOIP going, Gizmo5 had it all up and working it should only be minor changes. This leads me to believe there is something more going on like the carriers would revolt against google if every android phone only needed a data plan. Honestly the entire carrier industry would be turned on its head if google goes VOIP.

That may be part of it, but I cant imagine the FCC EVER allowing that deal to go through. Have you even read it?! Its totally BS. The FCC has to have some line drawn in the sand that says "this point an no farther". There needs to be a shift in the way the internet is treated.
Screenshot says it all...
I've been counting the days until this was to be.. Now I know...
HELLS YEAH! Thanks for the info!
I just logged into my Google Voice Account, (I had a previous Google Voice # separate from my Sprint #) and now there is a Sprint logo next to my cellphone number that is linked to my Google Voice Account.
If I click edit, under my sprint cellphone number it brings up a new menu
You can now see there is checkbox where I can select if i want my text messages to come through google voice.
Old Functionality
That 'send text message' is old functionality and only gives GV permission to send various texts to that specific cell phone.
Once the integration is available to everyone (jealous of those in Beta, BTW) you will just click the 'Change/Port' link next to your current GV number.
Hope this helps!
I can't wait for this to happen. I want GV integration soooo bad.
@azyouthinkeyeiz you rule!
Be careful! As of today, if you call Sprint tech support, they'll walk you through the "sprint integration" by getting you to PORT your number. They assured me it wouldn't port - but everything on googles site was saying "are you really sure you want to cancel your cell contract..." I bailed. Glad I did, as many others fell for this and lost their lines.
When you have the option in your account it will look different than what we see now...

When I try to do it, it tells me there will be a $20 charge payble via google check out.
If you get the $20 charge warning, that is the path to PORTING your number... DO NOT PROCEED.
Apparently some accounts are, in fact, active with the integration tools (beta accounts). They have an extra set of options that the rest of us don't.
Mojo, can you describe the options you had (or post some screen shots)?
They sent me the beta invitation about a month ago. As soon as I logged in, a screen popped up asking me if I wanted to use my existing gv number or use my sprint number. From what I've read on the net, it should be open to all sprint customers on the 26th.
Before the beta, I got that same $20 mesage to port my number over. Just wait!!!! Everyone should get the option soon.

I got an invite a couple weeks back and tried it out. I didn't like it at all. SMS kinda works but mms attachments don't. That's with the stock messaging program too. Until google fixes call routing, lag during conversations and adds the ability to send AND receive attachments in both stock and gv apply, I will keep everything separate. IMO it's not all what it's cracked up to be.

Google Voice is a call routing scheme. Basically, you'll be able to port your Sprint phone number as your Google Voice number. GV will then be able to take any call made to your Sprint number and route it where ever you wish - you can have it ring both your home phone and your mobile, your mobile and your work phone, your wife's phone too, etc. You can even set it up so that if certain people call you it will route differently. Also, all voice mail is stored on the GV servers and automatically transcribed (although typically not well). In theory it's very cool - kind of like a personal, virtual PBX. Sounds like there are a few technical hickups though.
Speak of the devil...
Hello,
You have been invited to start enjoying the benefits of the Sprint integration before anyone else! We are interested in your feedback as we roll this out to the entire user base and have listed a link to a form where you can send feedback and/or questions.
There are two ways to enable the integrated service:
1. Option 1: Keep your Sprint number (all the benefits of porting without the need to). In this case, your Sprint number becomes your Google Voice number so that when people call your Sprint mobile number, it rings all the phones you want.
How to enable this: click on the "change/port" link next to your GV # in the settings page, choose the option to use your existing number, enter your Sprint number and select the Sprint option.
2. Option 2: Replace your Sprint number with your Google Voice number (all the benefits of the app without the need for one). In this case, all calls made from your Sprint phone will display your Google Voice # natively (same for SMS).
How to enable this: click on the "enable Google Voice on your Sprint phone" link next to your Sprint forwarding phone. If the link does not show, click on edit and use the link to verify whether your phone is eligible.
In both cases, Google Voice replaces Sprint voicemail (pressing one on your phone links you to your Google Voicemail) and international calls made from the Sprint phone will be connected by Google Voice. Integrating your account with Sprint means you will still get the benefits of Any Mobile Any Time if that is included in your service plan.
Important Notes:
The integrated service only works with a valid Sprint mobile number.
For this early release, Sprint support channels will not be available for support, including Sprint Retail Stores, Sprint Customer Care, Sprint Telesales, Sprint Direct Sales Reps, etc.
If you need support, or have feedback, please fill out this form
If you use the Google Voice app on Android, you will need to log out and log back in to make sure the app stops using call interception.

this seems pretty cool, i'm excited to see how it works. Does anyone know if calling a friend's google voice number counts as a mobile call or landline using anytime minutes? will this new option change that?
So I got a new link in my google voice this morning:
Check eligibility for Sprint integration:
Well I was excited for a second. I clicked the link and then it said:
Unfortunately, Google Voice cannot be enabled on this Sprint phone. Please contact Sprint for more details as to why this cannot be enabled.
AWWW.
So I called Sprint. Man I wish I hadn't called Sprint. The lady said that something was wonkey with my account and that the workaround was for them to port my number to Google, issue me a new Sprint number and to set up GVoice on integration that way.
Well they ported my number to "Google" but at no time asked me which account to attach it to. It is just gone as far as I'm concerned.
I've lost my number and Sprint can't find it. They say they have tride to port it back and it failed. They said they have to wait two hours to try again.
Holy WTFPONY Batman. What do I do now???
Any of you Sprint Fellers wanna chime in?
**UPDATE**
I got my number ported back in and my phone reprogrammed. The folks at Sprint don't seem to have any idea that they have an integration deal with Google. Sprint...shame on you...great idea, great feature, POOR rollout!
I'm going to have to go with the wait and see method for the time being. Thank GOD I got my numbe back.
mine is saying the same thing when i do the check eligibility.
think ill just wait instead of messing with it. i dont wanna lose the # ive had since 98
I just ported my number not problem now i can leave my phone in the car for meetings and just use my work phone with Google voice ?

so.. all it is doing is moving your sprint number to your google voice, or making your google voice number your sprint... and then you get the google voice visual voicemail.. well.. isnt that the way already?? what are the benefits/cons?
I think the main difference is you're now able to associate your current Sprint number as your actual Google Voice number without having to actually port the number and get a new number with Sprint (and thus canceling your Sprint account in the process).
I have a Google Voice number separate from my Sprint number. I'm assuming when I get this option and choose to move my Sprint number over I'll lose my current Google Voice number.
I guess the question is what happens if I decide to leave Sprint later? Is that number associated with Sprint or with Google at the end of the day? Will I need to do a port in order to keep it associated with me? That's unclear.
i would think it would stay in google voice.. if gv had an empty button.. i would probably do it.. but im not going through 10 a time and deleting history/trash etc..
Well i hope itstays with Google voice, you still get mms on my phone but the rest it works on Google voice app for iPhone, i use it for the last 1 hour not problems. I just can make calls from Google voice iPhone app and idk about android app tho

Same error here. I've had my GV number since launch.
Called Sprint, got escalated about seventy billion times, nobody seems to actually know what the hell "Google Voice Sprint integration" is. They either tell me that it's not their problem, contact Google; or that if the Google Voice app is installed and working, then that's it and it's "integrated" (even though it's not). They eventually told me it's "because my account is corporate" and hung up on me when I told them that is not true.
I have a discount because of my employer, but a coworker has the same thing and got his integrated earlier this week, so the corporate thing shouldn't be an issue.
VERY FRUSTRATED!
edit: To be clear, the benefit to "integration" option #2, (keeping your existing Google number), is that calls made directly over CDMA (either without the GV app, with a non-smartphone on Sprint, or when no data connection is present) display your Google Voice number as its caller ID. This enables: quicker dialing of numbers without the GV Android app intercepting and routing the call through GV; using mobile-to-mobile minutes for outgoing calls; and (presumably) SMS caller-ID spoofing, allowing us to use Handcent or any SMS app instead of the GV app for texts.
I'm getting the same error when trying to integrate. It sucks because I was looking forward to this. I really hope it isn't because I've got a discount through my employer, because my line is definitely not a corporate line
I got this message the first time I tried as well. I had it check my number again, and on the second attempt it worked. I also have a discount from my employer. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

I don't get why people want their Sprint number as their GV number... I use my GV for business, sales, etc... I give it to whoever I don't want to have my real Sprint number. Why would anyone want it any other way?

Even if you do it the other way around (your sprint # becomes GV #) you get all the nice blocking features you would normally get with GV. Seems win win to me.

But if you integrate the number then you only have 1 number... Seems like a loss to me... maybe i'm missing something, I haven't paid much mind to this to be honest
So I had the same error, called up Sprint, and they said that it's because of my municipal discount.
"You have a type g-4 government municipal individual account, and all type g accounts are banned from the integration," were the tech's words exactly. Funny thing is, I don't have a government account, government plan, or anything. Just a 20% discount for being a part-time municipal employee.
Now to wait for the business center to open so I can yell at them... *sigh*

Calls coming into your sprint number do not go through the gv servers first so the only google service available is the voicemail. I had a few numbers saved in gv as blocked but they'd still ring through because the person was dialing my sprint number. Since I integrated, no more unwanted calls
I have yet to get this option in Google Apps GV.
I just got off the phone with Sprint (after being transferred 4 times because no one had any idea what I was talking about) and confirmed that I cannot access this feature because I have a "Public Sector Government account." Come on Sprint...I'm an individual with my own account, don't punish me because of where I work!
I wonder if you have to deactivate GV on your phone first and then try and activate with the sprint button. I am on a corporate plan as well but I haven't tried this yet for fear of losing the whole feature all together.

Then learn about it before posting ignorantly.
maybe i dont get it but i just dont see the advantage to this. i already use google voice for voice mail and i dont really care if my txts forward there because gvoice isnt capable of mms anyway. and i have free calling over wifi. other than the blocking unwanted calls, whats the advantage? im with the dirtyshroomz on this one.
Does anyone know how to get visual viocemail working on the Essential Phone with Verizon? I can't to find any option for it.

You can't. Use Google Voice instead.
I asked the same question earlier. Pretty pathetic that I can't get the VVM app I'm paying for to work. Surely there must be some way? Google voice isn't necessarily straightforward
How about any voicemail notification? I am getting no voicemail notifications, visual vm or otherwise with the PH-1 on Verizon.

Ditto that! I just get some bizarre, incoherent text message.

This is not an Essential issue.
This issue exists when you use *ANY* phone that is not carrier issued.
The Nexus 5X and 6P did not have VVM.
This is one of the side effects of an unlocked phone.

???
Is that with just Verizon?
I am on cricket and have no problem with visual voicemail on my unlocked Zenfone3 and my Essential.
The Pixel got VVM from verizon through the native VVM option in the stock dialer for android 7.1, I Wonder why the PH-1 does not get that option.

I would imagine it's because Verizon sells the Pixel.

Meh, not really a big deal, I just setup Google Voice for voicemail anyway. Works pretty much the same.

That is exactly why.
VVM must be initiated from the carrier side.
Some carriers have a generic app and interface.
Verizon does not.

How do you setup using your carrier phone number and then having it transfered to your Google voice number and voicemail.

Once you've set up Google Voice simply dial *71 plus your Google Voice number and that's it. In the Google Voice settings make sure to select, do not use Google Voice to make calls.

I don't want to use the Google voice phone number, I want to be able to use the number that I have been using for over 20 years now, which is my carrier number. I have a Google voice number, but the settings menu in Google voice make no sense

That's why I said to select do not use Google Voice to make calls. You'll still use your number for everything and GV will handle your voicemail.

Where exactly is that option. Can I change it in Google voice settings. I hate Verizon, but love their service. There is an option to port my carrier mobile number to Google voice but that is $20, is that what you did.
